The WWII drama could bring the director back to Cannes for the first time since winning the Palme d'Or with "The Tree of Life."

Terrence Malick won Best Director for "Days of Heaven" and the Palme d'Or for "The Tree Of Life." Now he's back at Cannes with A Hidden Life.

Both Bruno Ganz and the late Michael Nyqvist will be making their final screen appearances in this film.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 19, 2019 10:44 PM |
R3, Bruno Ganz is not “the late”?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 19, 2019 10:50 PM |
Tree of Life was the most pretentious piece of shit I’ve ever watched. I couldn’t wait for it to end; the only reason I didn’t walk out was I kept hoping it would get better.

I loved Tree of Life.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 19, 2019 11:15 PM |
Totally disagree with R5. I think Tree of Life is one of the 10 or so best films of the century so far. Was absolutely mesmerized by it.

August Diehl is a great actor good to see him working with Malick.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 19, 2019 11:19 PM |
In my opinion, there's a considerable artistic difference between early Terrence Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven, and, my favorite, The Thin Red Line) then the films he made after The Thin Red Line. Don't get me wrong. Terrence has a true gift. His films has some of the most beautiful cinematography that ever lived but the specific difference between the early stuff and post-Red Line is that the early stuff had great narratives to go with the beautiful shots. Starting with Tree of Life, it just seems to be mostly beautiful shots with very little narrative substance. Plus, the editing seemed off. That film he did with Ben Affleck, To the Wonder, was like one of those Eternity for Men cologne commercials stretched for 2 hours. I haven't seen Knight of Cups yet but anyway, I hope this new film is a return to early form.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 20, 2019 1:00 AM |
I loved Tree of Life, but did not like To The Wonder. At the time I wondered if it was because of Ben Affleck. Characters in these later Malick movies need an active interior life to be of Ny interest to the viewer. Some actors, like Jessica Chastain, are interesting to watch regardless of what they’re doing. Affleck is not one of those actors and the movie suffered for it.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 20, 2019 1:53 AM |
R11 I agree except the part about Tree of Life.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 21, 2019 3:48 AM |
Tree of Life was a beautiful film. It was incredibly moving and while the cinematography was an important part of the film the narrative was lovely. Perhaps the story was too subtle for some but for me it completely resonated with me.
This new film looks like a great story. Can't wait.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 21, 2019 4:01 AM |
Looking forward to this. The last Malick film I totally loved was The Thin Red Line. Hope this new work is as good as that.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 21, 2019 4:11 AM |
Isn't Thin Red Line the film where Adrian Brody was cast as the lead, was shot as the lead but then Brody learns his part is totally cut out when he goes on the press junket and finds out he's not in the film? They should have told him what happened before he set out to do promotion.
I always figured that the reason Brody got a massive standing ovation when he won Best Actor for The Pianist was because everyone in the room remembered what happened to him.

What did Malick do for 20 years between Days of Heaven and Thin Red Line? How did he make $$?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 21, 2019 4:23 AM |
r17, I've always wondered the same thing. Days and Thin Red Line (my favorite) were two great films.

So tired of WW2 dramas.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 23, 2019 11:30 PM |
Looks Maudlin. I was very patient and quite poetic and arty as a younger cinefile and loved Days of Heaven. I agree with R11 but I wonder if my tastes have changed, rather than Malick. I would actually prefer to lounge through something like Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller again than Days of Heaven. Life is short.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 24, 2019 12:26 AM |
R16 I had not heard that story about Brodys role in The Thin Red Line. Do you have any idea why they scaled his role back?

from twitter: Happy to report Terrence Malick did it. A HIDDEN LIFE finds middle ground between his poetic style, his philosophical notions on the nature of men, AND a tightly plotted historical drama. It’s both worldly, and totally out of this world. And already very close to my heart #Cannes

All snoozefest and very gorgeous, extended watch commercials.

Thin Red Line was just a beautiful movie visually with lots of characters you didn't care about at all.
Yes and Tree Of Life was the most pretentious joke ever. Malicks movies are as deep as a shampoo commercial. The guy films tons of footage then with a very vague script the editors just slap some scenes together and easily impressible morons claim to see some deep meaning behind it.

That was published in '69 and Days of Heaven is a '78 film. You can see how that doesn't check out.
Also, what's funny or unbelievable about translating Heidegger?

'Political decisions'? We're not talking about mere decisions but his ideology, which was used to support a genocide... it's certainly relevant to his philosophical body of work.

Sean Penn was pissed when he saw "Tree of Life" since his part had been reduced to nothing ala Brody in "..Line" Malick just makes it up as he goes along and then goes somewhere else in the editing room.

From Apri 2017. Malick's been busy. He lectures. He writes. He mentors other writers and filmmakers. He makes beautiful movies that take years to complete.

The film's composer James Newton Howard says scoring the film was a highly collaborative process. One of the early ideas Terrence Malick brought to Howard, was to incorporate sounds he had captured during production such as church bells from the villages, cow and sheep bells, the saw mill, sounds from the prison, and scythes in the fields. As a result, Howard took many of those sounds and processed them into musical elements that are woven throughout the score.

Speaking at Washington D.C.'s Air and Space Museum in April 2017, Terrence Malick teased "A Hidden Life" would mark a return to a more narrative-driven storytelling structure after the looseness of "Song to Song" and "Knight of Cups."

[bold]The film takes its title from the last sentence of Middlemarch by George Eliott: "... for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs."[/bold]
