Terrence Malick is back to save cinema

The WWII drama could bring the director back to Cannes for the first time since winning the Palme d'Or with "The Tree of Life."

Terrence Malick won Best Director for "Days of Heaven" and the Palme d'Or for "The Tree Of Life." Now he's back at Cannes with A Hidden Life.

by Anonymousreply 2April 19, 2019 10:40 PM

Both Bruno Ganz and the late Michael Nyqvist will be making their final screen appearances in this film.

by Anonymousreply 3April 19, 2019 10:44 PM

R3, Bruno Ganz is not “the late”?

by Anonymousreply 4April 19, 2019 10:50 PM

Tree of Life was the most pretentious piece of shit I’ve ever watched. I couldn’t wait for it to end; the only reason I didn’t walk out was I kept hoping it would get better.

by Anonymousreply 5April 19, 2019 11:06 PM

I loved Tree of Life.

by Anonymousreply 6April 19, 2019 11:15 PM

Totally disagree with R5. I think Tree of Life is one of the 10 or so best films of the century so far. Was absolutely mesmerized by it.

by Anonymousreply 7April 19, 2019 11:15 PM

R4 Died 16 February 2019 (aged 77)

by Anonymousreply 8April 19, 2019 11:18 PM

R7 I agree such an amazing movie.

by Anonymousreply 9April 19, 2019 11:18 PM

August Diehl is a great actor good to see him working with Malick.

by Anonymousreply 10April 19, 2019 11:19 PM

In my opinion, there's a considerable artistic difference between early Terrence Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven, and, my favorite, The Thin Red Line) then the films he made after The Thin Red Line. Don't get me wrong. Terrence has a true gift. His films has some of the most beautiful cinematography that ever lived but the specific difference between the early stuff and post-Red Line is that the early stuff had great narratives to go with the beautiful shots. Starting with Tree of Life, it just seems to be mostly beautiful shots with very little narrative substance. Plus, the editing seemed off. That film he did with Ben Affleck, To the Wonder, was like one of those Eternity for Men cologne commercials stretched for 2 hours. I haven't seen Knight of Cups yet but anyway, I hope this new film is a return to early form.

by Anonymousreply 11April 20, 2019 1:00 AM

I loved Tree of Life, but did not like To The Wonder. At the time I wondered if it was because of Ben Affleck. Characters in these later Malick movies need an active interior life to be of Ny interest to the viewer. Some actors, like Jessica Chastain, are interesting to watch regardless of what they’re doing. Affleck is not one of those actors and the movie suffered for it.

by Anonymousreply 12April 20, 2019 1:53 AM

R11 I agree except the part about Tree of Life.

by Anonymousreply 13April 21, 2019 3:48 AM

Tree of Life was a beautiful film. It was incredibly moving and while the cinematography was an important part of the film the narrative was lovely. Perhaps the story was too subtle for some but for me it completely resonated with me.

This new film looks like a great story. Can't wait.

by Anonymousreply 14April 21, 2019 4:01 AM

Looking forward to this. The last Malick film I totally loved was The Thin Red Line. Hope this new work is as good as that.

by Anonymousreply 15April 21, 2019 4:11 AM

Isn't Thin Red Line the film where Adrian Brody was cast as the lead, was shot as the lead but then Brody learns his part is totally cut out when he goes on the press junket and finds out he's not in the film? They should have told him what happened before he set out to do promotion.

I always figured that the reason Brody got a massive standing ovation when he won Best Actor for The Pianist was because everyone in the room remembered what happened to him.

by Anonymousreply 16April 21, 2019 4:18 AM

What did Malick do for 20 years between Days of Heaven and Thin Red Line? How did he make $$?

by Anonymousreply 17April 21, 2019 4:23 AM

r17, I've always wondered the same thing. Days and Thin Red Line (my favorite) were two great films.

by Anonymousreply 18April 23, 2019 11:22 PM

So tired of WW2 dramas.

by Anonymousreply 19April 23, 2019 11:30 PM

Looks Maudlin. I was very patient and quite poetic and arty as a younger cinefile and loved Days of Heaven. I agree with R11 but I wonder if my tastes have changed, rather than Malick. I would actually prefer to lounge through something like Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller again than Days of Heaven. Life is short.

by Anonymousreply 20April 24, 2019 12:26 AM

R16 I had not heard that story about Brodys role in The Thin Red Line. Do you have any idea why they scaled his role back?

by Anonymousreply 21April 24, 2019 12:45 AM

R19 This one looks interesting.

by Anonymousreply 22April 24, 2019 2:36 PM

I’m in the camp that the worst work by a real talent is better than OK work by a hack.

by Anonymousreply 23April 24, 2019 2:44 PM

August Diehl is hot

by Anonymousreply 24April 27, 2019 1:37 PM

from twitter: Happy to report Terrence Malick did it. A HIDDEN LIFE finds middle ground between his poetic style, his philosophical notions on the nature of men, AND a tightly plotted historical drama. It’s both worldly, and totally out of this world. And already very close to my heart #Cannes

by Anonymousreply 25May 19, 2019 4:52 PM

He certainly has been cranking them out lately, but more misses than hits.

by Anonymousreply 26May 19, 2019 5:08 PM

Malicks best film on the new century was The New World.
since winning the Palme d’Or with “The Tree of Life.” Since then, Malick has premiered his movies at Venice (“To the Wonder,” “Voyage of Time”), Berlin (“Knight of Cups”), and SXSW (“Song to Song”)

All snoozefest and very gorgeous, extended watch commercials.

by Anonymousreply 28May 19, 2019 5:13 PM

When I was young I fell for all that sort of stuff. Maybe I'm old and bitter but I find most of it pretty pretentious and self indulgent.

by Anonymousreply 29May 19, 2019 5:18 PM

His best film since "The Tree of Life"

by Anonymousreply 30May 20, 2019 12:30 AM

Finally we have some stills from Terrence Malick's new film A HIDDEN LIFE, and they look – unsurprisingly – absolutely stunning.

by Anonymousreply 32May 20, 2019 12:32 AM

Those stills look totally average.

by Anonymousreply 33May 20, 2019 12:57 AM

I would have preferred actors that are more local, but I guess the international audience wouldn't really hear a difference regarding accents anyway.

by Anonymousreply 36May 23, 2019 11:31 AM

Tree of Life was a JOKE.

by Anonymousreply 37May 23, 2019 11:35 AM

Adore Tree of Life, pretentiousness and all.

r32 Nice shots but Christ, that Twitter account...

by Anonymousreply 38May 23, 2019 11:51 AM

Thin Red Line was just a beautiful movie visually with lots of characters you didn't care about at all.

Yes and Tree Of Life was the most pretentious joke ever. Malicks movies are as deep as a shampoo commercial. The guy films tons of footage then with a very vague script the editors just slap some scenes together and easily impressible morons claim to see some deep meaning behind it.

by Anonymousreply 39May 23, 2019 11:59 AM
What did Malick do for 20 years between Days of Heaven and Thin Red Line? How did he make $$?

He translated Hitler's favorite philosopher into English. No joke!

by Anonymousreply 40May 23, 2019 12:02 PM

If you don’t like Malick why are you on this thread? You’re adding nothing new or insightful to the discussion.

by Anonymousreply 41May 23, 2019 12:47 PM

That was published in '69 and Days of Heaven is a '78 film. You can see how that doesn't check out.

Also, what's funny or unbelievable about translating Heidegger?

by Anonymousreply 42May 23, 2019 12:47 PM

Let' hope it's less Tree Of Life and more Days Of Heaven.

by Anonymousreply 43May 23, 2019 12:56 PM

Heidegger was a Nazi. Malick even visited him in Germany.

Sorry to burst your bubble R41, but Malick is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 44May 23, 2019 12:57 PM

Thanks r44. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 45May 23, 2019 12:59 PM
Heidegger was a Nazi.

And? We should just never again discuss his philosophical body of work because of his political decisions? Dear gods, but you are simple.

by Anonymousreply 46May 23, 2019 1:05 PM

Malick’s movies are unwatchable dreck.

by Anonymousreply 47May 23, 2019 2:35 PM

R41 I'm here to express my exasperation toward his films.

by Anonymousreply 48May 23, 2019 2:42 PM
We should just never again discuss his philosophical body of work because of his political decisions?

'Political decisions'? We're not talking about mere decisions but his ideology, which was used to support a genocide... it's certainly relevant to his philosophical body of work.

by Anonymousreply 49May 23, 2019 2:48 PM

I would much prefer a French New New Wave resurgence. Malick is a pretentious bore.

by Anonymousreply 50May 23, 2019 2:51 PM

Yes, restating your opinion is really making for a fascinating discussion.

by Anonymousreply 51May 24, 2019 5:33 AM

I can't wait to see this.

Sean Penn was pissed when he saw "Tree of Life" since his part had been reduced to nothing ala Brody in "..Line" Malick just makes it up as he goes along and then goes somewhere else in the editing room.

by Anonymousreply 53May 24, 2019 7:30 AM

Aside from Badlands & Days of Heaven I loath most of Terrence Malick's work.

by Anonymousreply 54May 24, 2019 7:43 AM

R53 the lesser Sean Penn is any movie the better.

by Anonymousreply 55May 24, 2019 7:46 AM

R54 Did you like The Tree of Life?

by Anonymousreply 56May 24, 2019 7:46 AM

R56 No, I hated it but having said that I do want to watch it again given its acclaim.

by Anonymousreply 57May 24, 2019 8:50 AM

Reading the title "Tree of Life" over and over reminds me of the synagogue.

by Anonymousreply 58May 24, 2019 9:29 AM

From Apri 2017. Malick's been busy. He lectures. He writes. He mentors other writers and filmmakers. He makes beautiful movies that take years to complete.

Wasn't this film initially called "Radegund"? I think I prefer that title; A Hidden Life just sounds super boring and unoriginal.

by Anonymousreply 60May 24, 2019 2:44 PM

R60 Yes the film was previously titled "Radegund."

by Anonymousreply 63May 24, 2019 3:48 PM

The cast features only European actors mostly from the German-speaking countries Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

by Anonymousreply 64May 24, 2019 3:48 PM

Terrence Malick spent almost three years editing this film.

by Anonymousreply 65May 24, 2019 3:48 PM

The film's composer James Newton Howard says scoring the film was a highly collaborative process. One of the early ideas Terrence Malick brought to Howard, was to incorporate sounds he had captured during production such as church bells from the villages, cow and sheep bells, the saw mill, sounds from the prison, and scythes in the fields. As a result, Howard took many of those sounds and processed them into musical elements that are woven throughout the score.

by Anonymousreply 66May 24, 2019 3:49 PM

Speaking at Washington D.C.'s Air and Space Museum in April 2017, Terrence Malick teased "A Hidden Life" would mark a return to a more narrative-driven storytelling structure after the looseness of "Song to Song" and "Knight of Cups."

by Anonymousreply 67May 24, 2019 3:49 PM

[bold]The film takes its title from the last sentence of Middlemarch by George Eliott: "... for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs."[/bold]

by Anonymousreply 68May 24, 2019 3:50 PM

Valerie Pachner, the actress who plays Fani, grew up in the same province 40 miles away.

by Anonymousreply 69May 24, 2019 3:51 PM

According to August Diehl, who plays Franz Jägerstätter, he treated the letters, which were sort of source material for the the script, between the husband and wife almost like another script alongside Malick's.

by Anonymousreply 70May 24, 2019 3:54 PM

I liked Badlands but Days of heaven is the one I really loved. But I concur his last few films we're a bit disappointing.

It looks utterly depressing.

Also it looks like a story we’ve seen before.

The trailer is enough for me.
