The first poster for Joaquin Phoenix's #Joker has arrived.

Co-star Marc Maron described 'Joker' as a "very interesting approach to this world." See what else he had to say about the film

I hate Joaquin Phoenix wish they had cast someone else.

by Anonymousreply 2April 3, 2019 2:21 AM

I do too.

by Anonymousreply 3April 3, 2019 2:22 AM

r2 Then why make this thread about this movie nobody gives a shit about?

by Anonymousreply 4April 3, 2019 2:23 AM

If the trailer is so awesome why isn't it on the internet already?

by Anonymousreply 5April 3, 2019 2:23 AM

Rooney is rumored to be a lezzie.

by Anonymousreply 6April 3, 2019 2:24 AM

What happened to Jared Leto's Joker?

by Anonymousreply 7April 3, 2019 2:24 AM

How many fucking Batman movies does the world need?

by Anonymousreply 10April 3, 2019 2:31 AM

R10 Right? Give us something different.

by Anonymousreply 11April 3, 2019 2:34 AM

Joaquin Phoenix playing a mentally damaged man going insane?

Cue M's groundbreaking gif.

R15 Joey, save it for Funny Or Die.

by Anonymousreply 20April 3, 2019 4:44 AM

by Anonymousreply 27April 3, 2019 2:34 PM

While Reqiuem is a good film, I had no desire to see it again. If they’re comparing The Joker to that, it doesn’t bode well.

by Anonymousreply 28April 3, 2019 2:39 PM

Weird reaction here. I was kind of hating it at first, but by the end, it left me really scared and anxious.

Who knows what the movie will be like, but it’s a well-built trailer, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 29April 3, 2019 2:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 33April 3, 2019 3:48 PM

This is DL, so I have absolutely no idea if R33 is saying he'd happily let Phoenix suck his dick, or if it's one of our alt-right interlopers using an old homophobic slur.

by Anonymousreply 34April 3, 2019 3:49 PM

Will Phoenix kill himself too? He seems totally the type

by Anonymousreply 35April 3, 2019 3:55 PM

Of course he can. Anyone can. The question is, does he WANT to suck a dick? If you don't have the answer to that, please refrain from posting any more mundane nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 36April 3, 2019 3:55 PM

Interesting

by Anonymousreply 37April 3, 2019 4:00 PM

I think it looks great. Hope the final product is as well.

by Anonymousreply 38April 3, 2019 5:13 PM

Joaquin looks different. Older, I guess. Odd that they would choose him for an origin story. I like him and have always liked him, since ELECTION.

by Anonymousreply 39April 3, 2019 6:01 PM

Do you mean To Die For? I don't think he was in Election.

by Anonymousreply 40April 3, 2019 6:36 PM

Of course. Two of my favorites from that era and I got them mixed up.

by Anonymousreply 41April 3, 2019 6:39 PM

This does seem oddly reminiscent of Taxi Driver, but frankly I don't need to see another depressing film right now, especially one more comic book movie starring the creepy Joaquin Phoenix. Pass.

by Anonymousreply 42April 3, 2019 6:59 PM

Whoa..he is gaunt . Definitely creepy.

by Anonymousreply 43April 4, 2019 1:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 51April 4, 2019 3:16 PM

bona fide dud. . betcha $10000000.

by Anonymousreply 52April 4, 2019 3:17 PM

I'm with you, R50, so done with the Joker. As if there aren't any other interesting villains in the Batman universe. This just highlights again the difference between Marvel and DC. Marvel has a coherent vision of what it wants to do with its characters in the movies, and DC is a mess.

by Anonymousreply 53April 4, 2019 3:18 PM

[Quote] Marvel has a coherent vision of what it wants to do with its characters in the movies, and DC is a mess.

The question is, will DC ever get it's shit together?

by Anonymousreply 54April 4, 2019 3:39 PM

I think the current plan is to just do standalone movies. Batman's gone, Superman's probably not coming back, Flash will never happen. So there's no chance of a Justice League crossover for years. So for now they'll just try and push a bunch of separate movies and see if they're a success.

by Anonymousreply 55April 4, 2019 3:45 PM

I have to say that, based on the trailer, I'm not even remotely interested in seeing this movie. I actually did think it was a pretty bad trailer. Or maybe it's a good trailer of a pretty bad film.

by Anonymousreply 56April 4, 2019 4:03 PM

[Quote] Flash will never happen.

Poor Ezra

by Anonymousreply 57April 4, 2019 4:26 PM

Batman's not gone. Matt Reeves is directing the next one, though Affleck's out and they'll be focusing on a younger Bruce.

by Anonymousreply 58April 4, 2019 7:46 PM

[QUOTE]Not a Joaquin fan but I’ll give it a shot. No doubt Heath Ledger would’ve been mesmerizing to see in this.

This movie would make a billion dollars in the first weekend if Heath were alive to star in it. It would be pandemonium as people climbed over each other to get in the theater. They wouldn’t have enough screens to meet demand.

But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Joaquin is probably the next best thing.

by Anonymousreply 59April 4, 2019 11:48 PM

Actually Daniel Day Lewis is the next best thing, but Joaquin is right behind him.

by Anonymousreply 60April 4, 2019 11:51 PM

Maybe these critics should be reminded that they're watching a trailer for a superhero movie.

by Anonymousreply 61April 5, 2019 12:06 AM

Technically, a supervillain movie.

by Anonymousreply 62April 5, 2019 12:12 AM

I don't remember The Joker having a harelip. 🐇👄

by Anonymousreply 63April 5, 2019 12:25 AM

Joaphin Phoenix is so overrated and his fantards are the worst after Tammy Hardy fantards.

by Anonymousreply 64April 5, 2019 2:30 AM

I think Phoenix’s harelip in real life is not as bad as it was in the trailer. I think they darkened it up quite a bit to make it seem like it was part of Joker’s character.

I know a lot of purists hated Jared Leto as the Joker but I thought he brought something new and interesting and he also made a good pairing with Margot Robbie. He made a more modern and sexy Joker.

I know a lot of people think it’s really important to have the Joker played by a stodgy-looking, stocky middle aged man, like in the Batman TV show days. But why? It’s supposed to be light entertainment, not a biography. This isn’t the 1960s any more, people like to look at pretty people. Adam West would have a six pack if they were filming the old Batman series today.

by Anonymousreply 65April 5, 2019 2:40 AM

[quote]Is he going to make a cameo in Birds Of Prey??

He can’t. That movie has Margot Kidder as Harley Quinn and she’s with Jared Leto’s Joker.

r66, I think Margot Kidder is a little too old and, well, dead to play Jared Leto's Joker.

by Anonymousreply 70April 6, 2019 4:12 PM

Even in her present state, she would be a better Joker.

by Anonymousreply 71April 6, 2019 4:19 PM

>Batman would have had a sixpack<<

Adam West had too many sixpacks, that's why his gut was hanging over his belt in Season Two. He was back in shape for Season 3. He was even shirtless in one episode.

by Anonymousreply 75April 8, 2019 10:06 PM

Wow, I’m shocked that THE BUZZ about a movie trailer at a cinema con is like, positive and bombastic. Because that never happens. You never see filmmakers and studios paying for positive buzz at a cinema con and spreading word of its fabulousness online.

It reminds me of the time my mother earnestly told me, “Stephen King is writing a new book that he says is so scary it’s actually scaring him as he writes It!”

“Holy shit, mom, really?” I asked. “I can’t believe a guy who writes horror novels is telling his audience that his next book is really scary.”

by Anonymousreply 76April 8, 2019 10:12 PM

Heath Ledger's "performance" as the Joker consisted of an Al Franken impression.

by Anonymousreply 78April 8, 2019 10:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 80April 8, 2019 10:28 PM

Enough of these superhero or super villain movies.

by Anonymousreply 81April 8, 2019 10:39 PM

This strikes me as more of a “How John Wayne Gacy got started,” kind of movie than a superhero movie. Too much realism isn’t good for this genre.

by Anonymousreply 82April 8, 2019 10:43 PM

It's not a super hero movie.

by Anonymousreply 83April 8, 2019 10:59 PM

by Anonymousreply 85April 8, 2019 11:32 PM

I don't do comic book movies, but this looks really interesting. I do like JP; he's a good actor and makes decent film choices

by Anonymousreply 86April 9, 2019 1:10 AM

R83, I meant to express that most “superhero movies” are cartoonish movies about larger than life characters. This seems more like a true crime novel or something, smaller in a way. I think that might be okay for the Joker if eventually it ended up that he was a hysterical, larger than life character.

Phoenix is a really introverted, inside the character’s tormented head type of guy. Not, “Ha ha! I’m crazy and I don’t care because this is so fun for me!”

There have been many interpretations of the Joker. To assume he must be depicted in one particular way is myopic.

by Anonymousreply 90April 9, 2019 3:03 AM

Every actor has brought something different to the role. But they all have a common theme. The guy’s name is Joker. Some angst is okay, but tormented, not-having-any-fun guy isn’t true to the role.

by Anonymousreply 91April 9, 2019 3:47 AM

[quote]There have been many interpretations of the Joker. To assume he must be depicted in one particular way is myopic.

Um.......Its a fucking comic book character. Real world-ness and actor-y reinventions are egotistical, unnecessary and unwelcome.

by Anonymousreply 92April 9, 2019 4:23 AM

[quote]The guy’s name is Joker. Some angst is okay, but tormented, not-having-any-fun guy isn’t true to the role.

This film is depicting the development of the Joker. I'm sure by the end of the film we'll see exactly what you're expecting. Also, if you bother to watch the trailer you'll see glimpses of that manic side in a few scenes. You can see Robert De Niro hosts a late night talk show of sorts as well as Joaquin's Joker preparing to go on stage. One of the final scenes of the trailer is him dancing.

by Anonymousreply 93April 9, 2019 4:25 AM

[quote]Um.......Its a fucking comic book character. Real world-ness and actor-y reinventions are egotistical, unnecessary and unwelcome.

The fuck? Did you sleep through Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger's take on the character? Additionally, the comics have already depicted way more fucked up and grounded versions of the Joker than any of the films have.

by Anonymousreply 94April 9, 2019 4:28 AM

how did loser phoenix get this role? director a good friend? bought it? is fuking the producer?

mystery of mysterys...

by Anonymousreply 95April 9, 2019 10:13 AM

I loved it. The movie is more of a character study than superhero movie.

by Anonymousreply 96April 14, 2019 5:02 PM

Where did you see it? Is it out now?

by Anonymousreply 97April 14, 2019 5:07 PM

I just re-read the article OP posted. It comes out in October and during the article, the director says he’s not finished “shaping it.” So I’m guessing it’s still in editing.

Here’s a quote from the director:

Appearing at CinemaCon, director Todd Phillips described the film as an “origin story about a beloved character with no definitive origin” and said the genre of the film is “tragedy.”

That doesn’t sound like the story of a happy camper to me.

As far as the video goes, it looks like Phoenix is a deeply depressed, mentally disturbed man, fake laughing. As to whether that’s because Phoenix is deeply depressed, or the Joker is, is open to interpretation.

by Anonymousreply 98April 14, 2019 5:14 PM

R22, You only watch them? You don't do anything else to the trailers?

by Anonymousreply 99April 14, 2019 5:15 PM

The word “Joker” sort of implies that there’s some joking going on.

by Anonymousreply 105April 14, 2019 6:16 PM

Heath Ledger is the one who led us to humanizing The Joker.

by Anonymousreply 106April 14, 2019 6:30 PM

Most superhero movies are based on comic books. There are several iterations of the Joker. Each one a bit different. I loved Heath's portrayal in 08 but the dude is dead, time to move on. Now I think Joaquin's version is the best. Leto's version sucks a million tiny dicks.

by Anonymousreply 107April 14, 2019 6:33 PM

If they want to have a super villain called “Angst-Man,” fine. Don’t completely destroy an existing character because directors want to make Shakespeare out of comic books.

[quote]Has the Joker always been portrayed as an agonized, angsty guy that becomes evil? Sounds like Norman Bates, or arguably, Charles Manson. Not a Joker.

He has many origins stories. But the angsty take was from The Killing Joke which portrayed Joker as a failed comedian whose pregnant wife dies, and he goes crazy after that loss and after being disfigured by falling into a vat of chemicals.

The Joker is almost always just an anarchist and ruthless killer when it comes to Batman's sidekicks (blowing up Jason Todd, shooting Barbara Gordon).

There. I said it and fuck you to the morons who will clutch at their chests as they hyperventilate because someone chooses to go against sheep mentality.

And because they would only honor the actress who played the put-upon str8 wife in the gay cowboy movie they didn't give him anything for, R142.

You can stop acting as if your opinion is revolutionary or incendiary. It's the most parroted opinion of Heath Ledger's Oscar win. It's as basic an opinion as you can have.

That being said, who do you think would have won had he lived? The other nominees were:

Josh Brolin - Milk

Robert Downey Jr. - Tropic Thunder

Michael Shannon - Revolutionary Road

Philip Seymour Hoffman - Doubt

Philip Seymour Hoffman

Not a Heath Ledger hater I'm actually a fan and loved his performance his performance as Joker was the only good thing in The Dark Knight.

R142 Not God but still better actor than Joaquin Phoenix.

by Anonymousreply 145May 13, 2019 6:35 AM

Philip Seymour Hoffman would have been his only competition out of those nominees. I still think Heath would have won had he lived. Unfortunately both of these actors are dead :[.

by Anonymousreply 146May 13, 2019 7:03 AM

Phillip Seymour Hoffman should have won. He was a much better actor than Heath.

Josh Brolin and RDJ were nominated? I see why Heath won. I mean, other than for dying.

R6 well they've said a lot of things about me over the years, but never THAT before!

by Anonymousreply 148May 13, 2019 7:07 AM

Graeme Thomas King looks like Eddie Redmayne.

Sorry wrong thread!

[quote] Of course he can. Anyone can. The question is, does he WANT to suck a dick? If you don't have the answer to that, please refrain from posting any more mundane nonsense.

Grover Cleveland couldn't.

Joaquin Phoenix is a closet case.

"He won the fucking Oscar because he died."

No, he didn't. His performance was amazing. And that's not my opinion; his performance was highly praised by critics. He was totally deserving of an Oscar. I have no idea why you have such a bug up your ass.

I don't like the director... and there's clearly a lot of knowingly derivative Scorsese shit going on in the film, but I'm a ride or die for Joaquin after his Master performance, so... I expect full commitment from him.

The Oscar talk is somewhat baffling to me... Joaquin's awards calibre, but I can't imagine a Todd Phillips movie being the proper path, but anything can happen.

Me too, R156. I was knocked out by his performance in THE MASTER; (I loved Philip Seymour Hoffman too, so the two of them together were amazing). I have always hoped that he would get the breakthrough role he deserves, and it looks like this might be it. Apparently it got an eight minute standing ovation at Venice.

Time for Batman Beyond with Michael Keaton now which everyone wants including the critics. Hopefully DC gets a frigging clue.

Seems like porn for MAGA and serial killers.
