Joker First Trailer Stuns CinemaCon, Critics Compare Footage to ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘Requiem for a Dream’

The first poster for Joaquin Phoenix's #Joker has arrived.
Co-star Marc Maron described 'Joker' as a "very interesting approach to this world." See what else he had to say about the film

by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 4, 2019 3:39 PM |
I think the current plan is to just do standalone movies. Batman's gone, Superman's probably not coming back, Flash will never happen. So there's no chance of a Justice League crossover for years. So for now they'll just try and push a bunch of separate movies and see if they're a success.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 4, 2019 3:45 PM |
I have to say that, based on the trailer, I'm not even remotely interested in seeing this movie. I actually did think it was a pretty bad trailer. Or maybe it's a good trailer of a pretty bad film.

This movie would make a billion dollars in the first weekend if Heath were alive to star in it. It would be pandemonium as people climbed over each other to get in the theater. They wouldn’t have enough screens to meet demand.
But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Joaquin is probably the next best thing.

by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 5, 2019 2:30 AM |
I think Phoenix’s harelip in real life is not as bad as it was in the trailer. I think they darkened it up quite a bit to make it seem like it was part of Joker’s character.
I know a lot of purists hated Jared Leto as the Joker but I thought he brought something new and interesting and he also made a good pairing with Margot Robbie. He made a more modern and sexy Joker.
I know a lot of people think it’s really important to have the Joker played by a stodgy-looking, stocky middle aged man, like in the Batman TV show days. But why? It’s supposed to be light entertainment, not a biography. This isn’t the 1960s any more, people like to look at pretty people. Adam West would have a six pack if they were filming the old Batman series today.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 5, 2019 2:40 AM |

Adam West had too many sixpacks, that's why his gut was hanging over his belt in Season Two. He was back in shape for Season 3. He was even shirtless in one episode.

It reminds me of the time my mother earnestly told me, “Stephen King is writing a new book that he says is so scary it’s actually scaring him as he writes It!”
“Holy shit, mom, really?” I asked. “I can’t believe a guy who writes horror novels is telling his audience that his next book is really scary.”

R83, I meant to express that most “superhero movies” are cartoonish movies about larger than life characters. This seems more like a true crime novel or something, smaller in a way. I think that might be okay for the Joker if eventually it ended up that he was a hysterical, larger than life character.
Phoenix is a really introverted, inside the character’s tormented head type of guy. Not, “Ha ha! I’m crazy and I don’t care because this is so fun for me!”

This film is depicting the development of the Joker. I'm sure by the end of the film we'll see exactly what you're expecting. Also, if you bother to watch the trailer you'll see glimpses of that manic side in a few scenes. You can see Robert De Niro hosts a late night talk show of sorts as well as Joaquin's Joker preparing to go on stage. One of the final scenes of the trailer is him dancing.

by Anonymous | reply 97 | April 14, 2019 5:07 PM |
I just re-read the article OP posted. It comes out in October and during the article, the director says he’s not finished “shaping it.” So I’m guessing it’s still in editing.
Here’s a quote from the director:
Appearing at CinemaCon, director Todd Phillips described the film as an “origin story about a beloved character with no definitive origin” and said the genre of the film is “tragedy.”
That doesn’t sound like the story of a happy camper to me.
As far as the video goes, it looks like Phoenix is a deeply depressed, mentally disturbed man, fake laughing. As to whether that’s because Phoenix is deeply depressed, or the Joker is, is open to interpretation.

Most superhero movies are based on comic books. There are several iterations of the Joker. Each one a bit different. I loved Heath's portrayal in 08 but the dude is dead, time to move on. Now I think Joaquin's version is the best. Leto's version sucks a million tiny dicks.

He has many origins stories. But the angsty take was from The Killing Joke which portrayed Joker as a failed comedian whose pregnant wife dies, and he goes crazy after that loss and after being disfigured by falling into a vat of chemicals.
The Joker is almost always just an anarchist and ruthless killer when it comes to Batman's sidekicks (blowing up Jason Todd, shooting Barbara Gordon).

I looked at the cast and they have a child actor, but no adult actor, portraying Bruce Wayne.
Are they going to they're going to change it so that the Joker first meets Bats as a little boy? Or is he gonna end up being the one who kills Bruce's parents? Not a fanboy but I'd hate to see them give the original story a major unnecessary overhaul.

So fucking sick of the "Heath is God" brigade. No he wasn't. He did a decent job but in no way would it have brought him this much praise had he not died. He won the fucking Oscar because he died. There. I said it and fuck you to the morons who will clutch at their chests as they hyperventilate because someone chooses to go against sheep mentality.

And because they would only honor the actress who played the put-upon str8 wife in the gay cowboy movie they didn't give him anything for, R142.

You can stop acting as if your opinion is revolutionary or incendiary. It's the most parroted opinion of Heath Ledger's Oscar win. It's as basic an opinion as you can have.
That being said, who do you think would have won had he lived? The other nominees were:
Josh Brolin - Milk
Robert Downey Jr. - Tropic Thunder
Michael Shannon - Revolutionary Road
Philip Seymour Hoffman - Doubt

Philip Seymour Hoffman
Not a Heath Ledger hater I'm actually a fan and loved his performance his performance as Joker was the only good thing in The Dark Knight.
R142 Not God but still better actor than Joaquin Phoenix.

Philip Seymour Hoffman would have been his only competition out of those nominees. I still think Heath would have won had he lived. Unfortunately both of these actors are dead :[.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman should have won. He was a much better actor than Heath.
Josh Brolin and RDJ were nominated? I see why Heath won. I mean, other than for dying.

[quote] Of course he can. Anyone can. The question is, does he WANT to suck a dick? If you don't have the answer to that, please refrain from posting any more mundane nonsense.
Grover Cleveland couldn't.

Joaquin Phoenix is a closet case.

"He won the fucking Oscar because he died."
No, he didn't. His performance was amazing. And that's not my opinion; his performance was highly praised by critics. He was totally deserving of an Oscar. I have no idea why you have such a bug up your ass.

meh

I don't like the director... and there's clearly a lot of knowingly derivative Scorsese shit going on in the film, but I'm a ride or die for Joaquin after his Master performance, so... I expect full commitment from him.
The Oscar talk is somewhat baffling to me... Joaquin's awards calibre, but I can't imagine a Todd Phillips movie being the proper path, but anything can happen.

Me too, R156. I was knocked out by his performance in THE MASTER; (I loved Philip Seymour Hoffman too, so the two of them together were amazing). I have always hoped that he would get the breakthrough role he deserves, and it looks like this might be it. Apparently it got an eight minute standing ovation at Venice.

Time for Batman Beyond with Michael Keaton now which everyone wants including the critics. Hopefully DC gets a frigging clue.
