Color me shocked & dismayed but it seems so. In 1971 he had black actor Hal Williams (Marla Gibbs' husband on 227 and many other roles) fired after the first episode because he refused to allow a black character to order his character around on the show.

I would imagine that almost every person, of every race, born before WWII was racist to a large degree. That includes most DLers parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and maybe a few current DLers.

According to wikipedia the anecdote comes from producer Hal Kanter in the book James Stewart: A Biography. I've never read the book so I don't know how reliable it is or how explicit Stewart was supposed to have been about it being about race. He could have done it about age, since it would have looked crazy for a then 33 year old Hal Williams bossing around 63 year old Stewart, in an academic setting.

At this point it's almost like everyone was default racist back then. I'd be more surprised to find a story about someone not racist.
Ok anyway here's a story about a white little girl who grew up the 40s. She went to a restaurant with her parents and saw a sign that said no colored allowed. She got so made she raised such a stink her family was forced to leave. She grew up to gave schizophrenia. Perhaps brought on by just trying to make sense of the world.

Another thing. I think there are many whites who didn't care either way about black people but saw how bad they were treated and wanted no part of that. Not sticking their neck out for nobody.
Thankfully their are people who voice their grievances. We're also a product of our time period. Had we been born in ancient Greece maybe you would think it ok to have your slaves or stone women. Everyone else would be doing it.

It's sad to say, but he was not a nice or even decent person when it came to being the exemplar of a human being promoted by the So Cal industry. But, Jimmy Stewart sure did hate those Vietnam protesters and others who threatened the "Bel Air" and "Beverly Hills" stock of the richie riches.
