I've been around gyms for quite some time and would like to address the misconception that the alpha male bodybuilder is the archetype dude that every average Joe should aspire to and be in awe of. While there are a few, like myself, who embrace physical fitness as a complement to their identity, not the definition of it, there are others, who are the epitome of insecurity, an over-inflated self-concept in lieu of low self-esteem; those grappling with mental health issues, anger issues, drug and alcohol issues, attention-seeking behaviors, and worst of all, who resort to artificial substances to achieve a cosmetic and aesthetic effect which masquerades as quality health. Any thoughts?
BODYBUILDERS: Alpha Males who got it going on, who have the world by the balls? Or train wrecks with a 12 pack?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 3, 2019 11:54 PM |
Bodybuilders are not a monolith. But the desire to be attractive is shared by all of them.

HATERS: Alpha Males who got it going on, who have the whole world figured out? Or JEALOUS BITCHES with a beer gut?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 20, 2019 4:10 PM |
I’ve always found that body type to be a complete turn off. I like fit. I like thin-ish. Bulky muscles are not for me. It’s just too much. My husband is thin and fit and I’m so attracted to him.

Anyone on the DL who says they have a great physique is a weirdo lying troll.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 20, 2019 4:32 PM |
Muscular fitness is one of many ideals. For others being a super rich investment banker at Wall Street is the ideal. Or others worship race car drivers or some other sport.
I know that sounds a bit juvenile but what ideal you strive for also reveals your greatest insecurity or weakness, because you think you need to improve in order to feel better about yourself and be finally worthy of other people's approval and praise.
A lot of that comes from growing up and observing what your peers worship and shower with approval.

R2 Deep breath. This has nothing to do with haters. This is an analysis and an open discussion based on facts and observations. Put your tutu back on.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 20, 2019 5:25 PM |
R4 Why can't someone on DL have a good physique at the very least? Don't you??
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 21, 2019 12:44 AM |
R4 is jelly cuz he's fat. Or maybe he's fat cuz he eats too much jelly!!! Oink much?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 21, 2019 12:47 AM |
Definitely a curious breed. And one I don’t find sexy. But R5 has it right. Overcompensation is a sign of insecurity.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 21, 2019 4:12 AM |
Probably people vilify bodybuilders because the ones with horrible attitudes stand out the most...
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 21, 2019 4:18 AM |
Are heterosexual men honestly unaware of how homoerotic bodybuilding is?
As a homosexual guy I can still see how sexualised female bodybuilding/fitness competitions are.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 23, 2019 4:21 PM |
Most of the hardcore lifters I've known are pretty much dullsville in the personality department. Very few of them have sparkling personalities, a sense of humor, or other talents worth a gander. Just sayin.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 21, 2019 1:32 AM |
Our young brethren who worship at the feet of these creatures should understand that 12 packs and ripped muscle doesn't translate into "good in bed." Most of these guys that I've known are NOT tops. They're bottoms, and inefficient ones at that, waiting to be plowed. I can't tell you how many of these alpha bros in my lifetime hustled out their highest drag in the bedroom. If I wasn't so repulsed, I would have laughed out loud hysterically.
The lesson here is don't worship. And don't think the package represents the gift. The sexiest guys you'll ever met are the 5s and 6s who'll you'll swipe right past. Average but tremendously sexual, sensual, and skilled. I'm glad I lived in the time of cruising, when we'd give such guys a chance and were so very glad we did.

R18 Not even. Mostly pig in a blanket meat and extreme selfishness. Unless you're a total doormat, no self-esteem, Kupie doll bitch. Why not find yourself a real man who really knows how to push those buttons? Muscle heads are shit in bed and porn stars are ACTORS.

I LOVE bodybuilders with big thick ropy veins. It's like they have 10x the normal testosterone level and are literally walking sex.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 28, 2019 6:28 PM |
you cant deny it takes a lot of dedication to have an alpha male bodybuilder body.........so at least no matter what else is going on in their head, they had the discipline to do that.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 28, 2019 6:29 PM |
^^^ Or the inability to do much else. I'm not saying every hour spent in the gym is an hour not spent in the library, but...
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 28, 2019 6:31 PM |
R22 Yes, Louise. And to distribute that level of testosterone to those ropey veins and muscles, where is the testosterone being taken FROM? They aren't "walking sex" unless you're a quadriplegic. They're walking vanity, ego, and insecurity. Qualities you're better off without.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 28, 2019 6:33 PM |
The only thing worse than the bodybuilder males are the bodybuilder cunts! They'll cut your heart sooner than say hello to you.

Zeb Atlas is attractive but he needs to work con his glutes more. Too flat and underdeveloped for his body.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 28, 2019 7:02 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 6, 2019 5:25 PM |
I think bodybuilding is sort of an art form- sculpting yourself. I am an illustrator with an interest in understanding human anatomy and weight lifting has given me a better understanding of how muscles and the body works than I would have from just observing others with strong physiques. I also enjoy the activity it adds to my otherwise non active lifestyle (don't have skills in any other sports). I certainly don't think down on anyone that doesn't want to do weight lifting but obviously some sort of exercise is good for everyone.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 6, 2019 5:33 PM |
R35 Hun, the people being talked about here aren't doing it for the exercise...
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 6, 2019 8:55 PM |

Arnold Schwarzenegger used to participate in orgies with other bodybuilders in the 70's
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 7, 2019 1:09 AM |
Arnold Schwarzenegger used to appear in (solo) gay porn, jerking himself off on a pool float. And thought his lawyers bought up all the copies.
That's about as antihomophobic as it gets, no?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 7, 2019 3:16 AM |
Is Arnold hung? I would have cut off ten years of my life to bottom for him when he was in his 20s. All those muscles!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 7, 2019 3:55 AM |
Arnold has never been sexually intimate with men except for walking naked aroung rich gay men as far as I know.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 7, 2019 6:02 AM |
Yeah R35. That's my point. I think of bodybuilders as artists sculpting their bodies.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 7, 2019 2:18 PM |
In the video I saw (years ago) he appeared to be hung like a canary. Maybe it was cold out that day - he was in a swimming pool but it wasn't in bright sun as I recall.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 7, 2019 2:30 PM |
If muscles weren't sexy and didn't give any sexual gratification no one would do it. We needed strong men when we were nomads surrounded by dangers in the wild. Your attraction to these large men is more than simply lust for self-satisfaction; it is actually your instincts helping the human race survive.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 7, 2019 11:25 PM |
R37, I recently had dinner with my late mother's 88-year old friend. She was asking about my hobbies and asked if I - someone who's religiously worked out for more than 35 years, albeit with light weights - worked out! When I told her my history, she asked to feel my biceps. She was surprised and very impressed.

by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 19, 2019 3:33 AM |
I am attracted to bodybuilders. Sorry, but that's my gig. I work out also, and have met and become friends with some, and others just being guys that I shoot the shit with between sets. I really don't care about the alpha-ness of these guys, as part of being an alpha allegedly is to have the total package; that being self confidence, being completely comfortable with gay men as a straight man, and of course the huge muscular body. Not many have all these. Probably only two out of the many I have met and know have this wrapped up. Usually, it's the self confidence that is lacking and being a bit insecure, then followed by the unease of being "straight" and having issues with gay guys.
It's a weird wrap of masculinity in a huge over-sized body that seems to help the insecure guys through. The sexually conflicted big boys I think see their own body, oddly as it may sound, as protection and assurance that he will not be seen as gay, also having a body like that is a turn on to oneself. As far as the non-sexual aspect of bodybuilding and some people saying it's completely non-sexual at a contest, and is all about just forms; well a penis is a form, and you can see it right in their little tiny posers. So that "It's not sexual" thing they say is about as idiotic as it gets.
The one guy that has it all in one package is a massive guy that I love. He knows I love him. He is secure as a straight guy, has a great girlfriend and two sons. He is handsome beyond belief, an ex-football player and can crush anyone with his hands. He also hangs with me and spots hot guys for me when we are driving. He is a rarity. The guys at the gyms, the bigger they are, the more issues they have. That's been my experience.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 19, 2019 7:18 AM |
Muscles are secondary sex traits. The penis is not the only sexual thing on stage. Muscles for humans are what beautiful colorful feathers on a malee bird are for birds; an exhibition of sexual maturity. "Look at me, I'm hot, baby".
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 19, 2019 10:02 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 19, 2019 11:30 AM |
Sexual orientation doesn't care about how a man achieves his muscular body; it just innately spots the features that enhance a man's sex appeal R56
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 19, 2019 11:45 AM |
R12: No; because the actual heterosexual ones legitimately do not connect sexual feelings related to men to the activity. They’ll fantasize about being able to pick a girl up and dominate her but will be completely surprised if you tell them it turns guys on.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 19, 2019 11:48 AM |
R58 If that were the case they'd have to be biobots, clones, or just plain retarded. Which, of course, is a possibility.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 19, 2019 12:12 PM |
R59: No - it is the concept of sexuality. A gay man may completely miss the idea that there are things he does that turns women on (hence the stereotype of the gay guy’s best girl friend being secretly in love with him) but he does them partially because they make him happy and also because guys he likes are attracted to it. It is often the case that you don’t know about other people’s sexuality until you are educated on it because people generally do not focus too much on other people’s internal thought processes that much.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 19, 2019 12:19 PM |

Most body builders by the time they reach 40 slowly turn into turkeys.
Far better to maintain a natural slim fit physique.
e.g. Here's Rami Malek who is almost 40.
Most people eat like pigs these days, so keeping fat off after 30 should be the key focus.
