BREAKING: Beto O’Rourke Confirms He’s Running For President

It’s official. Beto O’Rourke says he’s running for president.

The former Texas congressman confirmed to El Paso NBC affiliate KTSM that he’s tossing his hat in the ring for 2020.

“I’m really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents,” O’Rourke said in a text to the NBC affiliate. “It’s a big part of why I’m running. This city is the best example of this country at its best.”

The confirmation comes hours after the publication of a lengthy Vanity Fair cover profile in which O’Rourke did little to hide his desire to run for the White House.

“You can probably tell that I want to run,” O’Rourke told Vanity Fair. “I do. I think I’d be good at it.”

O’Rourke becomes the latest entrant in an already packed Democratic field, highlighted by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Many observers believe former Vice President Joe Biden will soon make his candidacy official.

Good. I hope he takes votes from that Putin-fucker Bernie.

Still Team Kamala here though.

by Anonymousreply 4March 14, 2019 12:33 AM

I think he will split the vote with Bernie among young people. Kamala will probably squeak by as the nominee.

by Anonymousreply 5March 14, 2019 12:39 AM

Kamala is the new Hillary.

BETO-BUTTAGIEG 2020

[quote]Kamala is the new Hillary.

At least Kamala only has a couple of scandals... not 30-years worth.

by Anonymousreply 9March 14, 2019 12:43 AM

I was torn between Klobouchar, Biden, and Pete. But Beto seems to have the "it" factor that I think will play well in places he'll need it. And he raised a lot of money from across the country for a Senate race, I can only imagine the money he'll raise as a presidential candidate. Now if he doesn't do well in debates or his stances on issues then I reserve the right to change my mind.

by Anonymousreply 10March 14, 2019 12:45 AM

Beto/Kamala 2020

by Anonymousreply 11March 14, 2019 12:46 AM

Serious question: did he raise all that money because people were so enamored of him or because people hated Cruz so much? All will be revealed now, I suppose. This "I was born for it" quip in Vanity Fair sure isn't the ideal start for him.

by Anonymousreply 12March 14, 2019 12:49 AM

[quote](Somewhere a DLer is preparing a Beto-Buttagieg story for NIFTY...)

"Are you serious?" Kamala sprang from her chair, dropping her fork with a clatter. "Right in front of my salad?"

by Anonymousreply 13March 14, 2019 12:49 AM

Marry me R13!!

You 100% win the internet tonight.

Fucking brilliant.

I am not worthy.

by Anonymousreply 14March 14, 2019 12:52 AM

Oh relax r12, he meant he was born to campaign for the presidency, not born to be the president. Try reading it in the context of the article.

by Anonymousreply 15March 14, 2019 12:53 AM

Thanks, R14. Happy to give you a chuckle.

by Anonymousreply 16March 14, 2019 12:55 AM

Is he going to ditch the "Abolish ICE/ Open Borders" bullshit?

by Anonymousreply 17March 14, 2019 12:55 AM

He did not do well in debate against Ted Cruz. He got nervous.

[quote] He did not do well in debate against Ted Cruz. He got nervous that Cruz was going to summon the Dark Lord

by Anonymousreply 19March 14, 2019 1:17 AM

Vanity Fair just happens to come out the day Beta announces. What a lucky coincidence.

by Anonymousreply 20March 14, 2019 1:20 AM

He won't get it. He's too inexperienced and he has white privilege!

by Anonymousreply 22March 14, 2019 1:24 AM

He loves to go barefoot, which is hot. 🔥

by Anonymousreply 23March 14, 2019 1:25 AM

His prolonged "Will I run?" marketing scheme, with the phony agonizing and the camera recording every second of his "journey", culminates, appropriately, in a "Vanity Fair" spread and the answer that surprised no one.

by Anonymousreply 24March 14, 2019 1:25 AM

Beto is an enchantress and a seductress. The other candidates don't stand a chance.

by Anonymousreply 25March 14, 2019 1:26 AM

R24, he is way behind Sanders, let alone Biden, in having people wait till they figure out their "journey". In any case, how important is that really.

by Anonymousreply 26March 14, 2019 1:27 AM

I don't know r17, why don't you ask him if you ever get the chance?

Yeesh.

by Anonymousreply 27March 14, 2019 1:30 AM

R13 you made my day!

by Anonymousreply 28March 14, 2019 1:35 AM

R17 Beto was never for open borders or abolish ICE. He has a detailed plan on totally rehauling the broken-down immigration system.

by Anonymousreply 29March 14, 2019 1:37 AM

When he was running for Senate, his border security plan was “everything is great along the border”.

by Anonymousreply 30March 14, 2019 1:39 AM

R30 - Trumpkin - His plan was identical to the plan of Will Hurd: border security needs to be reinforced by increasing manpower at the points of entry and increasing technological surveillance of the border.

by Anonymousreply 31March 14, 2019 1:43 AM

If he is the DEM nominee, I will vote for him.

I live in a red state with little say in who the DEM nominee will be. Additionally my presidential votes of late do not count per se since my state throws all electoral votes to the winner, with no pro rata splitting.

That said, I'll vote for him if he leads the ticket.

by Anonymousreply 32March 14, 2019 1:43 AM

I'd pick Beto of Kamala. The more I see of her the less I like her. Well I kind of actually have grown to hate her. The same with Amy.

by Anonymousreply 33March 14, 2019 1:43 AM

Too little too late. He waited too long. Beto is old news now.

by Anonymousreply 34March 14, 2019 1:55 AM

LOL! you wish r34.

by Anonymousreply 35March 14, 2019 1:56 AM

Isn't he the one with the really good digital social media team? That gives him a head start. He's got the charisma and he was able to create that clip that went viral - the one about kneeling for the anthem. An easy way to get a read on his chances is to watch the GOP. Whoever they go after the hardest is the one they're scared of.

by Anonymousreply 36March 14, 2019 2:23 AM

I hope he has lots of cute merchandise in the campaign store.

by Anonymousreply 37March 14, 2019 2:25 AM

r36, before he even announced some conservative shadow group already put out an anti-Beto ad.

They are scared of him.

And they should be.

by Anonymousreply 38March 14, 2019 2:29 AM

Sanders is the only potential nominee who would keep me home on general election night. Any of the other dem goobers have my vote despite their various foibles/merits/shortcomings. I’m agnostic on race and gender and only slightly skeptical of the 75+ crowd, otherwise I’d vote for any of the dems, including Biden. I think a Bernie presidency would be as bad as what we’ve been putting up with the last couple years.

by Anonymousreply 39March 14, 2019 2:35 AM

I won't vote for Bernie, not that that matters because he wouldn't best w trump anyway. Once they start hammering him on the socialism thing he'd be done despite what he or others might say.

by Anonymousreply 40March 14, 2019 2:39 AM

R40 the MSM has still not vetted Bernie. He has never revealed his tax returns. They all just give him a pass. Unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 41March 14, 2019 2:41 AM

R13: "Are you serious?" Amy sprang from her chair, dropping her comb with a splat. "Right in front of my salad? Now clean that the fuck up!"

That was gold R13, but I think you missed an even better opportunity....

Curious to see how this goes for him. He captured the country's imagination when he ran for the Senate, can he do the same on a bigger stage.

by Anonymousreply 44March 14, 2019 2:48 AM

R41, vetting comes during the primaries. It's too early.

by Anonymousreply 45March 14, 2019 2:48 AM

It's a no for me.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 46March 14, 2019 2:52 AM

Somehow I doubt you planned on supporting him in the first place r46.

by Anonymousreply 47March 14, 2019 2:54 AM

It says a lot about Beto that he is entering the race as a serious top-tier candidate when his highest office is a little known congressional rep of El Paso.

His campaign rests on him and his own charisma and ability to raise money from people online.

by Anonymousreply 48March 14, 2019 3:04 AM

His giant neck freaks me out. It’s too big for his head and the bulging veins don’t help. Plus he seems like kind of a flake.

by Anonymousreply 49March 14, 2019 3:07 AM

I get that folks I feel that it's a homophobic nation, but I think eventually Mayor Pete is going to do better than Beto.

by Anonymousreply 53March 14, 2019 3:16 AM

R47 I have nothing against him. That article was an eye opener. He also isn't progressive enough for me.

by Anonymousreply 54March 14, 2019 3:16 AM

LOL r53, that reminds me of something that I was told when I was a child; something that I've always found to be very good advice:

"Consider the source."

by Anonymousreply 55March 14, 2019 3:19 AM

Agree R50. Beto is the Gary Hart of 2020.

by Anonymousreply 56March 14, 2019 3:20 AM

Beto is just more of the same. This country needs and wants change. Beto isn't it.

by Anonymousreply 57March 14, 2019 3:24 AM

I have never given to a political campaign or worked on one. I will make my first donation tomorrow to Beto and work on his campaign here in must win Michigan. He is sexy as hell

by Anonymousreply 58March 14, 2019 3:25 AM

Lol, you must be a berniebro r57, or a russian troll pretending to be a bernie bro to sow division. Sadly it can be impossible to tell the difference.

by Anonymousreply 59March 14, 2019 3:27 AM

The real truth is we will happily go vote for whoever wins the Democratic primary whether it is our preferred candidate(s) or not.

That's the base truth, the only thing that matters is getting Trump out of office.

by Anonymousreply 60March 14, 2019 3:31 AM

Beto will siphon BernieBro votes away from Sanders, causing them to tie.

Then Biden will die.

Which will leave Kamala in the lead.

by Anonymousreply 61March 14, 2019 3:33 AM

R59. I do support Sanders. I know he is fighting for us. He has my vote in the primaries. However I will vote for the democratic nominee whoever that may be. Our goal is to defeat trump. He must be defeated. And anyone who says they won't vote for Bernie if he's the nominee is part of the problem.

by Anonymousreply 62March 14, 2019 3:37 AM

Beto is not more of the same. He is fresh air. People love him and he’ll appeal to a wide audience.

by Anonymousreply 63March 14, 2019 3:40 AM

R61 summed it up.

by Anonymousreply 64March 14, 2019 3:42 AM

Yet, he can't even beat the despised Ted Cruz.

by Anonymousreply 65March 14, 2019 3:44 AM

“I’m just born to be in it.”

That really reeks of straight, white, male privilege.

I don’t think Dem primary voters are looking for that.

by Anonymousreply 66March 14, 2019 3:44 AM

how do I donate to our new jfk ?

by Anonymousreply 67March 14, 2019 3:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 72March 14, 2019 3:56 AM

I'm awaiting Obama's choice/endorsement for the Demo nominee.

by Anonymousreply 73March 14, 2019 4:03 AM

Harris is never going to win. Blame Jussie Smollett.

by Anonymousreply 74March 14, 2019 4:08 AM

DNC is getting desperate because Harris is polling poorly and Biden will tank when people get to know him...again. Not interested in voting for a man child who rides a skateboard and votes against the environment with the republicans to help the fossil fuel industry and already violated the fossil fuel pledge after taking it. He also married a billionaire and we are sick of being governed by the 1%,

by Anonymousreply 75March 14, 2019 4:10 AM

I'm with R72. I can't stand the "but he's not progressive" thing. Who cares. We have a whole new contingent of loud progressives in the House and they'll apply pressure on him if he's president. If they get their way on some issues, so be it, but in the meantime I want someone who'll win.

by Anonymousreply 76March 14, 2019 4:13 AM

I think Klobuchar can win.

by Anonymousreply 77March 14, 2019 4:17 AM

Not in a million years, R77.

by Anonymousreply 78March 14, 2019 4:22 AM

All you Beto stans are forgetting that 1. Beto is kinda dumb and 2. He's a rich fuck. Democrats are not in the mood for a dumb white rich fuck for president. Smart white rich fuck, maybe, but Beto isn't, and that will out over the next... I'm giving him 10 months MAX.

by Anonymousreply 79March 14, 2019 4:46 AM

I don't mind that he's rich. If he's dumb, that's a problem. I really don't want another Carter and right now that's the feeling I'm getting from him.

by Anonymousreply 80March 14, 2019 4:51 AM

He's not dumb. For fuck's sake. I followed his campaign in Texas. He held 350+ Town Halls and after speaking extemporaneously for an hour each time (no notes, no teleprompter), he'd take an hour's worth of questions from the audience. From anybody - on any topic. He always answered at length, eloquently and when he didn't know something, he admitted he didn't - took the person's name and followed up with them.

The video clip which went viral about NFL players kneeling was asked him by a Cruz staffer at a Town Hall in a GOP county north of Houston. His answer was totally off-the-cuff, brilliant, moving giving historical perspective.

The Dems don't have a single other candidate in his league as a speaker.

by Anonymousreply 89March 14, 2019 11:18 AM

[Quote]DNC is getting desperate because Harris is polling poorly

Thats bullshit, Harris is polling quite well. She is third behind the nationally known candidates of Sanders and Biden.

by Anonymousreply 90March 14, 2019 12:14 PM

Harris courts and supports bigots. Exactly what the Dems need.

by Anonymousreply 91March 14, 2019 12:34 PM

r90, we'll see what happens now that Beto is in the race.

by Anonymousreply 92March 14, 2019 12:54 PM

r85 Is that real? So we're definitely in the era of politicians live streaming their root canals now, huh? I thought AOC making pancakes on Insta was just her peculiarity.

by Anonymousreply 93March 14, 2019 12:56 PM

Beto is currently greeting potential voters in a coffee house in Keokuk, Iowa.

I love him.

by Anonymousreply 102March 14, 2019 1:28 PM

BTW, for those who think Beto is just a bunch of fluff with little substance, you should be listening to this Q&A he's currently holding in Iowa. He's giving answers to actual policy questions the people in the coffee shop are asking him.

Now whether you like his answers or not is another story.

by Anonymousreply 103March 14, 2019 1:28 PM

Yes his son is actually named Ulysses.

by Anonymousreply 104March 14, 2019 1:30 PM

We’ll see how sharp he is at the debates. If he’s truly an airhead, it will show.

by Anonymousreply 105March 14, 2019 1:31 PM

Sincere question: if he can’t win a state election against an unlikable candidate like Ted Cruz, why do we think he could win the presidency? I would think more people would vote for trump in Texas than Cruz. Beto will probably lose his home state

by Anonymousreply 106March 14, 2019 1:33 PM

He is making very specific policy proposals and is in total grasp of statistics and legislation on things like the environment and education, in response to questions at this Iowa coffeeshop all the newschannels are broadcasting from rn.

by Anonymousreply 107March 14, 2019 1:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 109March 14, 2019 1:36 PM

Newsflash, whoever wins the Dem primary doesn't expect to win Texas r106.

If you are honestly "sincere" in your question you must realize it's pretty silly.

by Anonymousreply 110March 14, 2019 1:36 PM

Damn, he a good speaker. inspiring!

by Anonymousreply 111March 14, 2019 1:38 PM

So far, he's impressive. Did not expect to be impressed either

by Anonymousreply 112March 14, 2019 1:49 PM

Beto may or may not win Texas, but he has the best chance of all the candidates currently running (including Castro), and he could end up making the GOP really have to fight to keep it. Which would be great.

by Anonymousreply 113March 14, 2019 1:50 PM

R79. Not sure he's dumb. He took money from the fossil fuel industry. We need to get off of fossil fuels. How do I as a voter trust him in going the way of renewable energy?

by Anonymousreply 114March 14, 2019 1:52 PM

r106, Trump is less popular than Cruz in Texas, so there's that too.

But it will very hard for him to win Texas; not impossible, but very challenging.

by Anonymousreply 115March 14, 2019 1:53 PM

I'd be shocked if they weren't.

by Anonymousreply 121March 14, 2019 2:06 PM

Bernie supporters are not out to get him. He took fossil fuel money and people should know that. I'm not worried. All this will come out during the debates. I believe people know that as a country we must get off fossil fuels. This won't help him.

by Anonymousreply 122March 14, 2019 2:09 PM

Listen to yourself, R113. He has a failed Senate bid behind him. No idea how much money he can raise in a Presidential campaign. People need to give him time to land. All this projection is just a setup for failure. While the Beto and Bernie freaks duke it out, someone else will emerge the victor. I find all this hero worship really off-putting.

by Anonymousreply 123March 14, 2019 2:09 PM

It’s to be Uncle Joe and Kamala, r123. Kamala will kill it in debates but Joe will win the heartland, independents and even steal some Trump white men.

Yes, the two candidates for Senate in Texas got the most money from people in work in the fossil fuel industry in the 2018 election.

Does this surprise you? Think carefully about that. Of course him and Cruz got a lot of donations from people who work in the fossil fuel industry. Its Texas.

It's not like it is even corporate PAC money, just from people in that field.

by Anonymousreply 129March 14, 2019 2:21 PM

OK, no. It is money from fossil fuel corporate PACs, that's how it works. And he's a Democrat running in a party that wants climate change dealt with. He should never have taken those donations, especially since they were all this decade, it wasn't 20 years ago. There's a lot of policy problems with this guy which is why I won't be supporting him in the primary.

by Anonymousreply 132March 14, 2019 2:29 PM

I like beto and inslee. Biden is too old and has #metoo baggage and treated anita hill like shit. Bernie is a straight up grifter. I will vote for whoever the dem is that wins the primary. With one caveat #neverbernie

by Anonymousreply 133March 14, 2019 2:30 PM

R129. So as a voter how and why should I trust him to move our country to using renewable energy if he took money from people working in fossil fuels? Maybe Texans think it's ok. The rest of the country may not.

by Anonymousreply 134March 14, 2019 2:34 PM

[Quote]OK, no. It is money from fossil fuel corporate PACs, that's how it works

Maybe be informed on what you are talking about.

[Quote]This number isn’t as bad for O’Rourke as it might seem at first blush; it doesn’t include corporate PAC money, for example, since O’Rourke didn’t accept any donations of that type, and it does include smaller donations from non-executive, non-front group Texans who just happen to work in that industry.

[quote]He is no Obama.

There is never going to be another Obama. He was a young, handsome black man with Reagan-ish policies and charisma out the wazoo, and enough savvy to hide the more conservative actions of his administration; he might as well be a unicorn.

Pretty much ever since FDR, a Democratic president has had to be charismatic and popular and entertaining. Carter is the only Dem I can think of since FDR who doesn't really fit the bill, and he was only elected because people were so fed up they were desperate to get away from the GOP.

It's possible Beto will be that kind of charismatic candidate. It's early and I'm very much wait-and-see about it. Maybe it'll be Kamala or Amy, who knows. But don't count anyone out yet, it's too early.

by Anonymousreply 140March 14, 2019 2:56 PM

Good for him. He's my favorite. Least favorite is Sanders. He's a sexist creep.

by Anonymousreply 141March 14, 2019 3:00 PM

Obama needs to be on the ticket, of course.

by Anonymousreply 142March 14, 2019 3:04 PM

Obama can't be on the ticket, he's already ran and won twice.

by Anonymousreply 143March 14, 2019 3:10 PM

I am watching a clip from his announcement.

He is still an awkward teenager on a skateboard playing at charisma and gravitas and not really pulling it off.

He will fail.

by Anonymousreply 146March 14, 2019 3:17 PM

r124 And then they run together, with Uncle joe making a one-term pledge, and sweep the country.

BTW Beto IS dumb, being a good public speaker does not directly relate to intelligence, and Beto has memorized all of the stock wishy-washy phrases that progressives eat up but don't actually SAY anything. He's one step above AOC. But as many here have posted, you don't have to take our word for it, the debates will make this glaringly obvious.

Compare Beto to, say, my personal favorite candidate who I hope DOESN'T run for president but if she did I'd be behind her 100%, Stacy Abrams, She is one SMART woman and Beto would get eaten ALIVE by Stacy in a debate context, spit out and eaten again. I LOVE her!

by Anonymousreply 147March 14, 2019 3:24 PM

He's lovely. Curious how much he'll raise over the weekend. I'll buy a shirt.

by Anonymousreply 148March 14, 2019 3:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 151March 14, 2019 3:39 PM

I’m not much younger than Beto and grew up among many of his exact type — skateboarding punk rock fans in Che Guevara t-shirts worn with no awareness of the irony of it, let alone the fact that Che was a total piece of shit murderous psychopath of the lowest order.

Pray he fails. You do not want those clowns running anything at all, let alone a country.

by Anonymousreply 152March 14, 2019 3:41 PM

Odd for someone whose original slam was "short fingered vulgarian" to focus on hands so much.

But none of the Dems threaten Trump the way Beto does.

by Anonymousreply 153March 14, 2019 3:44 PM

Beto threatens Trump??????!!!!

by Anonymousreply 154March 14, 2019 3:48 PM

What are all the Dems other than Biden unpopular R130?

Because they don't pass the "would I want to have a beer with this person?" test.

They may be smart and good in their particular spaces, but there's nothing about them that people warm up to, nothing that makes them feel like "hey, this person motivates me to be better. I want them as a leader."

So many DLers never understood that was the difference between Hill and Bill. She was smarter and more competent, but he was the guy people wanted to put out for, the guy who made them feel good about themselves.

Only Beto and Biden have that this year.

by Anonymousreply 155March 14, 2019 3:49 PM

Bernie/Beto?

by Anonymousreply 156March 14, 2019 3:50 PM

Bernie supports the NRA and hasn’t released his income taxes......Beto has a moral compass and that is what I need to vote for...I think many of the potential Dems would be great but think Biden could handle Trump in a debate.

I know many DLers would like the US to be more like Europe, with philosopher-princes and all that, but that's not who we are.

by Anonymousreply 160March 14, 2019 3:55 PM

Beto hasn't taken PAC money since 2013, BernieBros. He founded the No PAC Caucus with Ro Khanna. Bernie took PAC $ till 2016 - including $366K from defense contractors AND $$ from oil and gas.

There are 325K people in Texas who work for oil and gas companies and some of them donated to Beto.

BernieBros have been attacking Beto since Bernie had his powwow (apologies to Liz Warren) on November 29, 2018 and decided Beto was the biggest threat to Bernie.

Conflating Abrams and Gillum is silly r179.

Stacey Abrams is similar to Beto, she came close to winning in a state that it is hard for Dems to win.

Gillum lost a race he should have won. He is not in the same category as Beto and Abrams. And Abrams was picked to.give to SOTU address, Dems do acknowledge that she is an impressive figure.

by Anonymousreply 180March 14, 2019 6:15 PM

Though if the question was about the level of public/twitter interest.

I'd point out Abrams was running for governor, a local position. Beto was running for senator, a federal position, so it does follow there would be more national attention.

by Anonymousreply 181March 14, 2019 6:17 PM

Well all is said and done, I feel like the top of the ticket will be a white male, and a female or black person will be the running mate.

Democratic voters are too skittish after 2016 to nominate a minority for the top spot. That includes black, latino and women voters, too. This idea that women voters will only want a female nominee is preposterous.

r189 that's too bad about Bernie, sorry but Bernie is the favorite and will win. Don't forget 40% are independent and lean left. The reason the DNC trotted out Beto is because they are desperate. by Anonymousreply 208March 14, 2019 10:09 PM

Remember when Beto told 60 Minutes he was not going to run for president ? Phoney.

JON WERTHEIM: We've heard a lotta people speculate that you and Sen. Cruz may face each other again, not in a Senate rematch but running for a higher office. What are your thoughts on-- on running for president?

BETO O'ROURKE: I don't wanna do it. I will not do it. Amy and I are raisin' an 11-year-old, a 10-year-old and a 7-year-old. And we spent the better part of the last two years not with each other, missing birthdays and anniversaries and time together. And we-- we-- our-- our family could not survive more of that. We, we need to be together.

JON WERTHEIM: Is that reversible? You're saying you'll, you'll never run for president?

BETO O'ROURKE: I'm saying that if elected to the Senate, I'll serve every day of that six-year term, that I'm not lookin' at 2020. And, and, in fact, am completely ruling that out, not going to do that.

JON WERTHEIM: No matter what? Win or lose you're not gonna run--

BETO O'ROURKE: Win or lose--

JON WERTHEIM: --in 2020?

BETO" O'ROURKE: Win or lose, I'm not-- I'm not running in, in 2020. I gotta tell you, it's incredibly flattering that anyone would ask me the question or that that's even up for discussion. But, but since people have asked, the answer's no.

JON WERTHEIM: You didn't sidestep that.

BETO O'ROURKE: No.

by Anonymousreply 224March 15, 2019 1:38 AM

There's something about him that just makes me think he probably can't win.

That folksy, aw-shucks Jimmy Stewart, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington schtick is already tiresome, and he's just been at it one day. That kind of idealism worked in the movies back in 1939, but that's because it was a MOVIE. A movie that was overloaded with idealism and conveniently left out all of the realism of working across the aisle to work together and compromise. Stewart's gosh-darn "Mr. Smith" character NEVER would've accomplished what he did in the film in real life.

Having said that, I do like the way he went to Iowa to LISTEN to the voters and ask questions of them, instead of relying on all the 'never-gonna-happen' Green New Deal crap, and assorted catch-phrases. Now if he'd just reel it in a bit, toss out the 100 lattes he seems to consume/day, he could turn into a contender.

He founded the No PAC Caucus with Ro Khanna and is championed by End Citizens United. Bernie took PAC $ till 2016 and of course Cory Booker and Kamala Harris suddenly announced they're anti-PAC after taking millions from Wall Street, Big Pharma and Steven Mnuchin.

Good one from Pelosi.

by Anonymousreply 240March 15, 2019 4:59 AM

On MSNBC they said it was Beto who livestreamed the 2016 sit-in protest for gun control. He did it for 18 straight hours.

by Anonymousreply 241March 15, 2019 5:28 AM

I like reefer.

by Anonymousreply 242March 15, 2019 6:25 AM

He just did some 3 minute video with his wife and he talked the whole time while she said nothing.

He did that in 2018 a couple of times as well. Like he wants all the attention and his wife is just the trophy.

I am really not sure about him anymore. Yes he is great at campaigning, but how will he do when he's actually president and Putin, China start playing with him. Is he tough and shrewd enough to be the top dog in this game? I am afraid he's just another Justin Trudeau who is good as virtue signalling and selling himself on social media but other than that he is a moron.

by Anonymousreply 243March 15, 2019 10:43 AM

R238 you have to admit he lends himself to satire. People who are more image than substance often do.

by Anonymousreply 244March 15, 2019 11:07 AM

I don't care if skit was made about Beto but god Fallon sucks.

by Anonymousreply 245March 15, 2019 11:34 AM

R243. He won't be president. Once the debates start people will finally get an idea of who he is. He says things but doesn't give any specifics. As a voter that is what I'm looking for. I don't care how good looking he is. This country is in big trouble.

by Anonymousreply 246March 15, 2019 1:59 PM

[quote] He says things but doesn't give any specifics. As a voter that is what I'm looking for.

That may be what you're looking for, but it's not what most voters are looking for. Voters don't want specifics. They want lofty language. They want simple soundbites. And they want someone with charisma and the "it" factor. They don't give a shit whether the candidate has a 10-point plan to deal with North Korea. Have you not been paying attention to any presidential elections over the last 40 years?

by Anonymousreply 247March 15, 2019 2:42 PM

Are you sure R247? I believe a lot more than you think want specifics of how we are going to fix the problems our country is facing.

by Anonymousreply 248March 15, 2019 4:22 PM

R246 he gave plenty of specifics during the Texas Senate race. That was the first day.

He pisses off the Republicans but also the BernieBros. Dammit, King Bernie was supposed to be crowned this time out. IT WAS HIS TURN, GODDAMMIT! And he pisses off the man-hating feminists of course. Both Harris and Warren sent out emails yesterday trying to fundraise off Beto. Just like John Cornyn did.

by Anonymousreply 249March 15, 2019 4:23 PM

Why would he piss off the Bernie supporters? He won't lose supporters to beto. Beto will take voters from other candidates. Beto is more conservative while Bernie is more progressive.

by Anonymousreply 250March 15, 2019 4:42 PM

Beto has two campaign managers, Mr. Smoke and Mr. Mirrors.

by Anonymousreply 251March 15, 2019 4:52 PM

R195= Kellyanne, disguised as SJW

by Anonymousreply 252March 15, 2019 10:41 PM

[quote] Why would he piss off the Bernie supporters?

I'm guessing Beto may attract young voters, more so than someone like Biden (if her runs) or Harris or Warren.

by Anonymousreply 253March 15, 2019 10:44 PM

[quote]Why would he piss off the Bernie supporters?

Because he (Beto) got a passionate following out of a non national campaign. Bernie Bros feel threatened.

by Anonymousreply 254March 15, 2019 10:48 PM

Beto got a massive number of millennials off their asses and to the polls in Texas.

by Anonymousreply 255March 15, 2019 11:57 PM

GIT HIS YOUNG HOT SMART ASS INTO THT WHITE HOUSE YEA!!!!

by Anonymousreply 256March 16, 2019 12:11 AM

R255, Obviously, not enough of them.

by Anonymousreply 257March 16, 2019 12:12 AM

more than Bernie would

by Anonymousreply 258March 16, 2019 12:16 AM

Beto is more of a threat to a Biden, Harris, and Booker. Bernie will keep his supporters which include a high number of independents. The biggest voting block.

by Anonymousreply 259March 16, 2019 12:22 AM

His rollout has been kind of a disaster. Maybe he should have another one.

by Anonymousreply 260March 16, 2019 1:19 AM

I think his rollout has been fine, R260. What is disastrous about it?

by Anonymousreply 261March 16, 2019 1:21 AM

R261, The fact that it happened.

by Anonymousreply 262March 16, 2019 1:25 AM

The Texas Tribune's DC correspondent was on MSNBC tonight. Texas Tribune - if you don't know - is a neutral, independent website for politics.

She said Texas Republicans are freaking out. If Beto's the candidate they're afraid not only would he carry Texas, but down ticket races could be a disaster.

by Anonymousreply 263March 16, 2019 3:02 AM

I have never given to a political campaign but I gave to Beto. I hope Annie Liebowitz is his official campaign photographer

by Anonymousreply 264March 16, 2019 3:47 AM

Fox News must be freaked about about Beto. They gave a ton of airtime tonight to Beto to trash him

by Anonymousreply 265March 16, 2019 3:49 AM

Me too, R264.

by Anonymousreply 266March 16, 2019 3:51 AM

How much did he raise his first 24 hours? He won't disclose for some reason. Maybe it's lower than he expected.

by Anonymousreply 267March 16, 2019 4:08 AM

I have no problem with Beto"s message of coming together. Hate has bubbled up to the surface and seems so acceptable. I have a mosque about a half mile from my neighborhood and there is a small school attached. I see the small children walking into it as I drive to my office and fear something happening there

by Anonymousreply 268March 16, 2019 4:10 AM

It's difficult to call him an empty suit since I'm not sure he owns one.

by Anonymousreply 273March 16, 2019 7:26 AM

Beto was part of some secret Hackers club back in the late 80's/early 90's. This was before the World Wide Web (what we are ALL currently using) was even a thing.

I'm pretty sure he's intelligent.

I’ll support whomever. But Beto is no longer my favorite. He talks a good game, I love that he brings aspirations to the table, over all he’s ok, but he is not a true Progressive. Either way, if he wins the primaries, his vote is mine, I’ll get behind him for sure.

by Anonymousreply 276March 16, 2019 3:01 PM

[quote] but he is not a true Progressive

And you think that is a bad thing?

by Anonymousreply 277March 16, 2019 3:15 PM

Interestingly, Beto is the candidate who is getting ripped to bits by the GOP and by the left. Nobody's looking into Kamala, Pete, Julian, Liz, etc. Why not? You think the GOP won't?

Both Wendy Davis and the Texas Tribune have gone on record saying the GOP is worried sick if Beto is the nominee because he'll carry Texas. None of the others are such a threat to the GOP. Imagine the GOP having to invest massive resources in Texas - the most costly because of physical size market in the country.

Here's an article by a Ted Cruz advisor who was charged with oppo research against Beto during the Senate campaign. He describes Beto's strengths and why he would be the most formidable opponent for Trump.

R277 I do. This country needs change. Capitalism doesn't work. The rich make out fine. Universal health care. The rich pay their fair share. Anyone who wants higher education should be able to have it without crushing debt. Minimum wage needs to be a living wage. This country is like a third world country especially when it comes to healthcare.

by Anonymousreply 279March 16, 2019 3:37 PM

R279 the problem with healthcare here is lobbyists. When you have politicians like Cory Booker taking millions from Big Pharma, there is no way there will ever be reasonably priced healthcare here.

by Anonymousreply 280March 16, 2019 3:44 PM

Beto thinks that healthcare is a good question, and we should have a national discussion about it.

by Anonymousreply 281March 16, 2019 3:51 PM

[quote]I’d love the have the hottest leader in the free world. We could do far worse.

He’s not hotter than Justin Trudeau. But he might be stupider.

by Anonymousreply 282March 16, 2019 3:52 PM

[quote]Beto thinks that healthcare is a good question, and we should have a national discussion about it.

We’ve been having this “national discussion” since 1992, when Bill Clinton made it into a campaign issue.

We’ve had enough discussions, time for action.

by Anonymousreply 283March 16, 2019 3:54 PM

I don't see why people think he's so hot. He has big teeth and he looks like he has bad breath. Sinus breath. Ugh. Probably spits when he talks and chews with his mouth open. He's definitely a mouth breather.

by Anonymousreply 284March 16, 2019 3:56 PM

At this point I don't worry about policies of the Dem candidates because they're alike and the variations are negotiable. We should remember that Congress's makeup is as important for the enacted policies as is the president.

GOP propaganda is an indicator which candidate they're afraid of.

by Anonymousreply 285March 16, 2019 4:02 PM

West Texas Camelot in 2020!

by Anonymousreply 286March 16, 2019 4:04 PM

Important takeaways from the article in R278:

- Beto got out the vote in ways none in the GOP expected.

- He lost by a very slim margin in a very red state. This makes him a front runner in states like the Midwest.

- He always looks great and looks like a man of the people. This is real star quality which matters, especially in Dem candidates.

- People who meet him love him and he loves talking to people. He has an instinctive feel for campaigning.

- Talking to people, he frames things simply and in a moral dimension, without a Warren or Sanders shrillness.

- In TX he wanted to win over voters in places that others would have written off.

- He isn't an angry candidate. He's fueled by ambition and has relentless energy. And he can make fun of himself.

This GOP consultant basically boils it down to - Beto had advantages that critics / the media thought were problems but the voters did not.

by Anonymousreply 287March 16, 2019 4:16 PM

The problem with Beto is that he got so hooked on the admiration and cheers, that he thinks this is what it takes to be president.

He's a local politician and so far, what I heard him say about issues outside of the US and foreign policy his answers weren't convincing. His ideas about how to deal with Putin are downright dangerous.

He was actually one of the voices who supported Bernie Sanders, who thought the DNC rigged the primaries. He was one of the last superdelegates to vote for Hillary and he also wanted to remove Nancy Pelosi and thought the house should start impeaching Trump.

That's how naive the guy is.

by Anonymousreply 288March 16, 2019 4:37 PM

Republicans and Russians fear him, biggly

by Anonymousreply 289March 16, 2019 4:40 PM

Apparently his fundraising flopped so badly they refuse to release the numbers.

Beto has no real enthusiasm behind him besides the media, Harris is treading water and the others stand no chance. Looks like DL's last shot as denying Sanders the nomination will be through Biden. Good luck with that one.

by Anonymousreply 290March 16, 2019 4:45 PM

The thing with Sanders is he can win. He has a huge following. Many are independents. Nobody can win without independents. I like his ideas. Are some of them big? Yes. But we need to start somewhere. Look how many are coming around for single payer? He even got other politicians on board. I truly believe he is what this country needs right now.

by Anonymousreply 291March 16, 2019 4:53 PM

Is that his Hillary standard “we need more research” answer on healthcare? Because he’s had a lot of time to think about it and it is not going to instill confidence in voters who are worried about their own healtchare coverage if he doesn’t have an actual plan to safe-guard and expand coverage. He’s going to have to get specific on the policy questions. And make sense. He won’t win in a debate with Pete because he talks in sound bites while Pete is a Bill Clinton level policy wonk who can talk to the average American in terms that they will understand yet doesn’t sound like he’s talking down to them. That’s a gift. A straight shooter with upper level management written all over him. The last part is a joke. Office Space!

by Anonymousreply 292March 16, 2019 4:55 PM

R290 Biden won't even win. I believe most people are sick and tired of corporate democrats. I agree beto first day of fundraising was a flop. We do know he made enough to fill his van up lol

by Anonymousreply 293March 16, 2019 4:55 PM

Beto has his flaws, and it's possible that he'll flame out, but show me another candidate in the bunch who can connect with voters in the critical Midwest and Rust Belt states and inspire them. Amy Klobuchar, perhaps, but she's very bland and I don't see her ever gaining enough momentum. Biden, perhaps, and possibly Bernie. I just don't see voters in the heartland warming up to DL fave Kamala Harris. If voters in those states didn't particularly want Hillary in 2016, why would they want a black woman from California in 2020?

For better or worse, Iowa and New Hampshire will have a huge influence on who the eventual nominee is. Iowa probably favors Klobuchar (from neighboring Minnesota), Biden, Beto, and Bernie. New Hampshire probably favors Bernie and Warren (from neighboring states). It may be hard (not impossible, but hard) for someone like Harris to finish no better than 3rd or 4th in both Iowa and New Hampshire and still gain the momentum needed to win the nomination.

by Anonymousreply 294March 16, 2019 5:25 PM

So this Beto could not even eviscerate Ted Cruz, while a mild-mannere senator from Colorado could do it in less than 10 minutes. Robert has no spine or grit.

by Anonymousreply 295March 16, 2019 5:32 PM

He certainly has no gravitas.

by Anonymousreply 296March 16, 2019 5:33 PM

To the person thinking Beto will protect the "mosque near me", he's taken more AIPAC money than anyone his age/experience in history. Who do you think is the number one stoker of Islamophobia? It's not the "white supremacists". And if we're honest, the white supremacist culture as it is today in Australia is exclusively backed by rightwing Zionist types, all of their alt-right websites and figures have their roots and origins with ultra Zionists and that narrative; "muzzies are bad, by definition". This attitude did not start bc of immigration. Since 9/11 the idiots of "the west" have been bombarded with this same message.

Anyway Beto will take $$ from whoever. Possibly he is the president the US deserves right now.

by Anonymousreply 297March 16, 2019 5:36 PM

Islamophobia in Europe solely comes from non Jewish white right wing extremists R297.

Reservation about Muslims comes from hundreds of cases of terror attacks, homophobic attacks, attacks on Jews and the horrible treatment of women happening in Muslim communities.

by Anonymousreply 298March 16, 2019 9:52 PM

r289, and certain Democratic candidates, make no mistake about that.

by Anonymousreply 299March 16, 2019 10:12 PM

There was no such thing as "islamophobia", outside of Israel, before 9/11.

by Anonymousreply 300March 16, 2019 10:50 PM

Beto gave a detailed extended response on healthcare today. He supports the Medicare for America plan in the House not Bernie's.

He was in several Iowa towns today - big turnout everywhere. He ran in a race today. He is exhausting all the reporters following him around. Apparently during the race (he had a very good time) he never stopped talking to people running alongside him. Shades of his Runs with Beto in Texas. At one point he and Amy Klobuchar had dueling Town Halls in one town. Amy's was held in the DNC office, Beto's was outside with hundreds of people showing up.

by Anonymousreply 301March 17, 2019 12:24 AM

Not THE Wendy Davis. LOL what is Datalounge's obsession with losers? It's depressing. I remember when losers used to just go away.

by Anonymousreply 302March 17, 2019 12:25 AM

Something not a lot of people have realized, Beto has no job right now. Most of the people running do. He is going to be able to campaign relentlessly.

by Anonymousreply 303March 17, 2019 12:25 AM

[quote] So this Beto could not even eviscerate Ted Cruz, while a mild-mannere senator from Colorado could do it in less than 10 minutes. Robert has no spine or grit.

𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢: 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒏

Beto O’Rourke is many things. But he is definitely not a fighter. And that’s why it would be a huge mistake for the Democrats to nominate him to take on President Trump in 2020 for the White House. Simply put, Beto cannot beat Donald Trump. Someone else, maybe. But not Trump.

It’s not Beto’s fault he’s not a fighter. After all, he’s led a very charmed, privileged life as a white male. He’s faced very little adversity. He didn’t come from nothing. He didn’t have to fight and scrape his way to the top because of his gender or race or economic circumstances. He has no experience doing battle in high-stakes business or leading tough negotiations. He hasn’t ever fought for working people in contentious situations.

Poor Beto. It’s one thing to run in Texas against the hated Cruz and have the whole country support while raising staggering amounts of cash, but that gave him false confidence that he could replicate it on the national stage. Certainly wasn’t prepared for attacks from the left, the very same people that cheered him on in Texas.

by Anonymousreply 308March 18, 2019 4:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 313March 18, 2019 5:23 AM

Bernie Sanders now has one thing in common with the millionaires and billionaires and other 1 percenters he so frequently attacked on the campaign trail: he now owns his very own summer home.

Vermont magazine Seven Days reported Tuesday that the 74-year-old senator and his wife, Jane Sanders, have purchased a four-bedroom house on the shore of Lake Champlain for roughly $600,000. Jane told Seven Days that they had recently sold a house in Maine that had belonged to her family since the 1900s, and used the proceeds to purchase the new property, which is located in North Hero (population 803, as of the 2010 census). With this purchase, Sanders now owns at least three houses, the others being in Burlington, VT, and Capitol Hill in D.C.

by Anonymousreply 314March 18, 2019 5:27 AM

Beto is a dud. Utterly mediocre dude that decided to run against Ted Cruz. Across the nation Dems sent millions to the campaign - not specifically for “Beto” but for the opportunity to hopefully remove that fucker Cruz. The media latched on to the $$ and totally got the story wrong. They made the dude into a star that he wasnt, he isnt, he ain’t never gonna be.

Zero qualifications - ideas as merit - no means or history of useful alliances to craft in depth policies. Like Bernie he is digging in now though. Utterly insincere the both of them.

Highly educated, qualified, experienced, well studied wonks Harris, Klobuchar and Warren are going to eat those chumps alive. I will live for those debates.

As an aside, I want to say, who the hell is doing Klobuchar's campaign? CNN scheduled her town hall for 10 PM at night she has these gatherings in the DNC offices? I'm seriously wondering WTF is going on with her because they need to step up their games. I get e-mails and twitter & facebook stuff from Kamala and others, but very little from Amy.

by Anonymousreply 328March 19, 2019 3:31 AM

r325, Did you see Ari Melber's The Beat tonight? The first segment was a totally Beto bashfest; Ari and three women all sitting around the table laughing their asses off about one or another of Beto's gaffes or problems in the last few days.

Couldn't believe I was watching this. Even Ari didn't make much of an attempt to stop the bashing of one of the front running Democratic candidates.

Sometimes being one of the perceived front runners isn't all its cracked up to be. The fawning media can turn on you like a cat and claw your eyes out.

by Anonymousreply 329March 19, 2019 3:42 AM

Saw that. Melber's such a tool. They were bitching about white male privilege. So Ari needs to quit and leave his spot to some woman of color.

by Anonymousreply 330March 19, 2019 3:46 AM

Yes r350, and that one woman and her "Beto has to clean this all up and try to do better" or whatever nonsense she was spouting; really pissed me off. If I hear one more time that Beto is some kind of sexist because he COMPLIMENTED his wife by saying she did most of the raising of their kids without him, I think I'm going to scream; and then he goes and apologizes, for what? For giving his wife a compliment? Everybody is so fucking up tight these days about offending anybody about anything that nobody can ever say anything nice or complimentary about even their spouse anymore!

Rant over. But I expected more from Ari. My mistake.
