She didn't pick up the trash because picking up the trash was the maid's job, and the maid hadn't been in for several decades.

Seriously though why do some people do not care they live in filth? I have a family member like this. She’s got nothing to do all day but doesn’t notice her whole house needs to be cleaned thoroughly! It’s so bad I won’t go to her house.

Her silly mother refused to sell their house (Grey Gardens) in the Hamptons even though she didn't have the money to keep it up. If she had sold it before it started to deteriorate and bought something much more modest, they probably would have been all right. Instead they lived in squalor in Grey Gardens with no heat and no running water. They didn't pay their property taxes so the municipality definitely wasn't going to pick up their garbage.

If you can swing it pay someone to do it for you R10. I split the cost of a housekeeper with a roommate so it’s not so bad.
