[quote]Born to Be Alive by Patrick Hernandez

I hate that song more than almost anything. “Born to Be Alive”? The title alone is completely inane.

by Anonymousreply 14February 22, 2019 1:56 AM

This song should be at the top of any disco list:

No Madonna, Patti Labelle, Aretha, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan or Kylie Minogue on the list and only one Diana Ross and one Donna Summer song.... smdh

by Anonymousreply 79February 22, 2019 7:13 AM

R57, it’s in OP’s original list, so don’t get your panties in a bunch. And anyway, it wasn’t half as gay as Diana’s true gay anthem.

There was not a single drunk queen who wouldn’t holler to this song’s bridge in the middle of the dance floor.

I just want to say that sorry for getting all pissed off at the DL and yelling at him the way he did. I only wanted to make a happy posting about homosex things, and I end up getting attacked. I thought that the flaming had stopped, and that all the trolls had gone away, but then they just keep coming coming back.

I just wish this could be a fun group with people posting about happy, fun stuff like music and tv, but I guess that will never be. It seems there others who would rather be mean and attack people than be civil, and my wish for a fun and happy place to talk about things I love will never exist.

These trolls don't even care about how much they hurt people and ruin their lives. I'll just be putting them in my ignore list, but I bet they're change their names to bounce right out of my killfile. But I'll just ignore list them all over again. But I'd better shut up I guess, since people will probably attack me and blame me for this anyway, instead of blaming it on the trolls who only try to hurt me. But I do hope all this ends and that we can soon have fun and be happy. OK, I'll shut up now.

[quote]No BeeGees? How is that right? They started the whole thing.

First of all, no they didn’t. By a long shot.

Secondly, The Bee Gees lucked out by being asked to write most of the soundtrack for what ended up being a wildly popular film cum cultural phenomenon. But it was very clear that they knew nothing about disco’s Latin/black/gay roots. All of that is fine and they even ended up adding to if not redefining the genre, making tons of money in the process, but their shit is too slow and bassless for gay tastes.

Night Fever et al were scarcely played at Studio 54 and almost never at gay clubs. The one exception: You Should Be Dancing - precisely because it had many more beats per minute and a heavier bass line.

I'm a convert of filing sharing (yeah I know I used to bitch about it in the past), and I was wondering where you get music from? I am PaulWebbFan00, because I'm a fan of the former Talk Talk bassist, Paul Webb.

I've found some great downloads so far. And please don't flame me, because I used to say that downloading from was bad, because after using it, and finding songs I never hear anymore I've decided downloading and torrenting can be good. A girl can change her mind, can't she

I don't think that's true at all. Disco is an offshoot of soul music. The Bee Gees have strong ties to that tradition, and not just because black artists covered their material.

MANY of you don't understand what disco is, so many of these songs in the second half of this thread are NOT disco!

I'm certain Debbie Harry would be dismayed that anyone thinks "Heart of Glass" or ANY of her records are thought of as disco!

by Anonymousreply 177February 25, 2019 2:52 AM

You should do a little research. Blondie purposefully went disco, just as they purposefully incorporated rap into their repertoire.

by Anonymousreply 178February 25, 2019 2:58 AM

R177, Heart of Glass was originally called The Disco Song. It was meant to be an homage to European disco, which Harry liked, even though other New Wavers thought it was “uncool.”

R182, Some music experts consider Doctor’s Orders, along with Gloria Gaynor’s cover of Never Can Say Goodbye, the first songs that fulfilled all the necessary components to be considered disco music. Both were released in December 1974, years before the Bee Gees’ You Should be Dancing.

by Anonymousreply 184February 25, 2019 3:32 PM

1973-1974 were the years the key components of disco came into focus. Doctor's Orders and Never Can Say Goodbye are definitely disco, as are MFSB's Love is the Message and George McCrae's Rock Your Baby, which came out earlier in 1974.

But back to gay disco classics. This, Free Man, is out-and-proud R&B/disco in 1975. Did anyone ever hear it in a club? I know it only from compilations. It was co-written and produced by Bunny Siegler, a important R&B figure. Sorry about the ad; you can bypass it in a few seconds.

I played the Tom Moulton Free Man remix in 1975 - The Back Door Madison WI.

by Anonymousreply 186February 25, 2019 5:04 PM

Rock Your Baby doesn’t have the syncopated high hat, does it? That’s a must for disco.

by Anonymousreply 187February 25, 2019 7:30 PM

R187, I think it does, actually. It also has that smooth, repetitive bass line that's perfect for dancing. And anything that says "just say you want to do it" is probably disco.

I've always loved how joyous disco was.
