Hi I'm a Samsung foldable phone. I cost $2,000.

Jealous?

Stinky linky, Opie.

I want it but also know it would be a disaster in my hands. Besides, how sturdy can a smartphone that keeps getting opened and closed really be?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 1February 22, 2019 12:10 AM

They said it can withstand opening and closing repeatedly 100 times a day for 5 years.

by Anonymousreply 2February 22, 2019 12:19 AM

Well, I'd like a clarification on what the term "withstands" entails, exactly. Does it mean that it technically doesn't fall off its hinges in 5 years, but can creak and wobble all the same? Again, I want this, but I'll probably wait for the 2nd or the 3rd generation to come out.

[quote]The phone, which can operate three apps simultaneously

I don't mean to be a bitch, but this phone appears to have more RAM than my computer. So why are we on three apps only? Seems likes a weirdly low number in 2019.

by Anonymousreply 3February 22, 2019 12:26 AM

Will the Cos-play simpletons line up outside the Apple store a week in advance and then bitch and moan on social media when told Samsung is the manufacturer?

by Anonymousreply 4February 22, 2019 1:11 AM

I would not be a purchaser (ever) of anything like this, but I am fascinating to know who their market is for a $2k phone.

by Anonymousreply 5February 22, 2019 1:14 AM

I’m wondering if it’s going to come out that all these phones cause cancer.

by Anonymousreply 6February 22, 2019 1:18 AM

samsung has been ahead of the curve w these innovationd

by Anonymousreply 7February 22, 2019 1:27 AM

It’s too thick when it’s folded. Looks like three iPhones glued together. The point should be to have it as thin as a normal handset when closed. This shit looks like a prototype.

by Anonymousreply 8February 22, 2019 1:30 AM

Hasn't Samsung heard about Apple's "success" selling 1k phones?

by Anonymousreply 9February 22, 2019 1:30 AM

Fuck yes, I want one. I’m on my phone a lot, including now.

But 2K? It’s gonna have to come down.

by Anonymousreply 11February 22, 2019 1:51 AM

R7 Samsung often gets out of the gate first but always loses the race. Apple will perfect the technology like it always does and make all the profits.

by Anonymousreply 12February 22, 2019 4:25 AM

I'll wait for Surface phone with built in Android Emulation and full PC connectivity.

We've been using smartphones for a while now. Have cancer rates gone up overall? I'm too lazy to google.

by Anonymousreply 14February 22, 2019 4:30 AM

R5 - geeks from rich backgrounds. To them that's play money.

by Anonymousreply 15February 22, 2019 4:32 AM

Status symbol. None of this is about necessity. Even the most basic smartphone can make calls, use internet/text/take pictures/video, etc. This is merely about one-upping someone else.

by Anonymousreply 16February 22, 2019 4:36 AM

Can I just get a phone with a longer battery life?

by Anonymousreply 17February 22, 2019 4:44 AM

[quote] geeks from rich backgrounds. To them that's play money.

But are there that many that this will recoup production and R&D costs.

The newest Apple had dismal sales because people were complaining that it was too expensive ($1k). I would love to know how many of these they think they can sell.

by Anonymousreply 18February 22, 2019 5:32 AM

Foldable? How 2003.

by Anonymousreply 19February 22, 2019 6:07 AM

I'm drooling. Definitely getting it.

by Anonymousreply 20February 22, 2019 6:09 AM

It’s laughably thick. Has an ugly bezel And it doesn’t fold flat. More like a triangle because of that wide hinge. Only for suckers like R20.

Jeez I use a Samsung foldable phone that cost 15 bucks at Walgreens.

by Anonymousreply 24February 22, 2019 7:35 AM

I was expecting them to announce that it was $999. When they said "It will start at $1,980" I audibly gasped! And notice no one in the audience clapped?

There are a few documentaries on this subject and if they are to be believed then yes, cell phones cause brain tumors in heavy users. The tumors develop on the side of the head the user holds his/her phone. And with 5G, it doesn't matter if you even use a cell phone or not--we're all getting radiated whether we consented or not.

by Anonymousreply 26February 22, 2019 8:05 AM

RIP case manufacturers!

by Anonymousreply 27February 22, 2019 8:16 AM

It’s the 1st generation of course it’s going to be expensive. Someone has to be first and it happened to be Samsung. The industry will improve the next generations over time, but it’s great to see something new in the mobile market. If I could afford it I would buy it...

by Anonymousreply 28February 22, 2019 8:36 AM

R18 I doubt it but I think this is more about signalling than making a profit. Even at $2000 they're probably selling it for a loss.

by Anonymousreply 29February 22, 2019 8:41 AM

I don't really understand when you'd need such a gadget outside a business or workplace meeting or at your own or a friend's place? I can imagine people getting annoyed with others who show it off in public playing music and video clips very loudly.

by Anonymousreply 30February 22, 2019 8:42 AM

Once you’re really invested in Apple products, it’s next to impossible to get away from them. My Iphone is connected to everything I have. I can’t imagine a phone great enough to make me want to start over again with a new system.

by Anonymousreply 31February 22, 2019 8:59 AM

Apple doesnt "perfect the technology". It just effectively manipulates its gullable user base. Which, btw, is trending more ghetto as of late.

by Anonymousreply 32February 22, 2019 9:02 AM

R26 I had a brain tumor and I had visions. I believe the visions cause the tumor and not the reverse. I can feel the visions coalsce and become flesh. Uncontrollable flesh. But when they removed the tumor, it was called "Videodrome".

Yes, you will be able to find them in the clearance bin at your local 99 cent store by summer.

by Anonymousreply 35February 22, 2019 12:06 PM

Samsung always with the gimmicks....think of how many they have to sell to be profitable and to continue producing.

by Anonymousreply 36February 22, 2019 12:26 PM

I can just imagine all the eviction notices going onto people's doors because they rush out to buy this and forget to pay a little thing called rent. That's OK. Anybody who keeps their phone in their hand all day anyway is subhuman to me and they don't deserve to live in polite society.

by Anonymousreply 37February 22, 2019 12:39 PM

Older people like huge screens and they can afford this. That's the market.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 38February 22, 2019 12:44 PM

The cost is kind of justified due to the internals. The foldable screen is not the newest thing - other Chinese vendors have had it first. It has 12 Gb of ram, 1TB of storage, liquid cooled and the latest processor and video processor and a huge battery. The price will drop once more phones hit that level of hardware.

by Anonymousreply 39February 22, 2019 12:49 PM

It actually has 512GB of storage.

by Anonymousreply 40February 22, 2019 1:26 PM

4.6" is ridic small, almost requiring you to unfold it. Unfolded it's 7.3" which I keep seeing them refer to as "astonishing" but I currently have a phablet that measure's 6.5" which set me back $150. 7.3" isn't that much bigger than 6.5".

by Anonymousreply 41February 22, 2019 1:34 PM

Apple has created a cult around its brand with loyal costumers standing in line the day some new gadget gets released. I don't think any other tech company managed to do that on the same level as Apple. I think the Samsung brand got really hurt by the news about their cheap labor practices and the horrible treatment of their workers.

by Anonymousreply 42February 22, 2019 3:06 PM

Sorry, loyal customers.

by Anonymousreply 43February 22, 2019 3:07 PM

I’ve been using Apple for almost 10 years. Idk how to leave them even though I like the new Samsung phones. The Note 9 is legit much better than iPhone XS Max, but I have my iPhone attached to everything.

by Anonymousreply 44February 22, 2019 3:30 PM

I'd just like a phone that had sound quality as good as the old landline phone I bought for $20 at CVS.

by Anonymousreply 45February 22, 2019 3:35 PM

But the thing is that "old people" can also carry around a $50 Kindle in their tote bags.

In fact, most people I know wander around with a phone and a tablet in their briefcase or bag (or car).

Why would you want those two things in one object that's pretty hefty for a phone conversation.

So aside from the novelty of something that folds, it's really just about the RAM and storage. What old person needs 12gb RAM? That's for designers, video editors, and gamers.

by Anonymousreply 46February 22, 2019 6:07 PM

Apple ensure way better quality control over it's products..they're just better. I have used both.

by Anonymousreply 47February 22, 2019 7:23 PM

R44, I love my Note 9...the best phone I’ve had in a long while.

by Anonymousreply 48February 22, 2019 9:05 PM

Why don't they just invent a tablet that lets you make phone calls?

by Anonymousreply 49February 22, 2019 9:22 PM

Through WiFi calling enabled on my iPad, I can make calls.

by Anonymousreply 50February 22, 2019 9:29 PM

Does this one burst into flames if you piss it off?

by Anonymousreply 51February 22, 2019 9:34 PM

I'm not risking 2 grand on a new Samsung product. I will let it stress test in the public first.

by Anonymousreply 52February 22, 2019 9:37 PM

I'd rather buy a massive OLED TV, thanks.

by Anonymousreply 53February 22, 2019 9:41 PM

Actually, the new Kindles have 4g. you can use Skype to make calls.

$240

by Anonymousreply 54February 22, 2019 9:52 PM

R53, I want the oled tv and the phone...

by Anonymousreply 55February 22, 2019 11:20 PM

Yo, bitch

I'm a Tracphone

by Anonymousreply 56February 22, 2019 11:23 PM

R12 is delusional. Apple stuff is pretty much crap these day... three years behind and hardly perfected.

by Anonymousreply 57February 22, 2019 11:26 PM

iPhones are glitchy now.

by Anonymousreply 58February 22, 2019 11:45 PM

So are Macbooks.

by Anonymousreply 59February 22, 2019 11:57 PM

That's more than my MacBook Air!

by Anonymousreply 60February 23, 2019 12:09 AM

I had a MacBook Pro since 2010. It just recently started getting bad. So I bought a MacBook 2017 model. Not a Pro again... this is basically an Air but smaller? I got the Rose Gold.

That's what I've been wondering, R64, if there's a crease in the phone. Thanks for posting that so now I know I'm not the only one wondering.

by Anonymousreply 65February 28, 2019 3:39 PM

What a stupid thing to spend two grand on.

by Anonymousreply 66February 28, 2019 3:40 PM

I don't personally understand the devotion to Apple products. I know a lot of people love the products because they integrate with each other but I don't have a difficult time integrating my phone, tablets, computer, etc. I also prefer to be able to control how I use my phone rather than having the phone dictate how I operate it. iPhone cameras though always seem much better than other cameras I've come across.

by Anonymousreply 67February 28, 2019 3:41 PM

Boy, R17, have I got the phone for you.

r49, I have an 8 inch phablet. I ported my number to Google voice and make/ receive calls and texts on the phablet through the Google voice app. easy peasy.

by Anonymousreply 69February 28, 2019 6:35 PM

Buy Apple products - I have stock in the company. Thanks....

by Anonymousreply 70February 28, 2019 6:39 PM

I like the phone at R68, but I don't think much of the hand model showing it.

by Anonymousreply 71February 28, 2019 7:46 PM

I liked the Huawei presentation earlier this week...they’re also releasing a foldable phone. The most expensive phone on the market - 2,900€/$2.600.

by Anonymousreply 72February 28, 2019 8:04 PM

That one probably has a crease in the screen, too.

by Anonymousreply 73February 28, 2019 8:43 PM

It just seems like gimmick

by Anonymousreply 74February 28, 2019 10:07 PM

R67, iPhone cameras haven't been the best in a while now.

And lately, the Apple hardware and software have been... less than stellar.

As for foldable phones... someone has to be first. And it was never going to be Apple. The drive for every bigger displays that are pocketable necessitates a 'foldable phone'. There are a couple of attempts now, taking different tactics... we'll see what happens. These are "early adopter" and "enthusiast" phones, not general consumption phones.

In two years, they'll be MUCH cheaper, and probably much more usable, as software and operating systems and applications mature and everyone discovers what can be done with them.

by Anonymousreply 75February 28, 2019 11:16 PM

R73, that phone folds the opposite way... with the screen on the outside. So the "radius" is on the outside, thus no crease. We'll see which one turns out to 'win', or whether there will be both.

by Anonymousreply 76February 28, 2019 11:17 PM

I only use ipod touch or ipods before they discontinued it. It was shit anyways...spend 400 bucks and it's broken in 2 years, gotta buy more.

I will not buy anymore Apple shit products.

I'm in the market for a new smart phone and I think I'm going cheap. These things become obsolete so fast! And if you get a super expensive one, be prepared to be robbed or killed for it.

by Anonymousreply 77March 11, 2019 5:30 AM

I still use a pencil to dial my disc phone...

by Anonymousreply 78March 11, 2019 7:18 AM

[quote]These are "early adopter" and "enthusiast" phones, not general consumption phones.

THIS.

Don't any of my fellow eldergays remember the giant "bricks", aka the first cell phones? They were comparably priced, targeting the same high-end, early adopters.

by Anonymousreply 79March 11, 2019 7:34 AM

[quote] iPhone cameras haven't been the best in a while now. And lately, the Apple hardware and software have been... less than stellar.

Let's be clear here: The Pixel 3 currently has the best camera.

However, the iPhone has the best video and audio recording capabilities.

But while many use the phone for video, your average consumer only cares about the camera.

Once Pixel figures how to get a microphone into their phone that doesn't sound like someone screaming into a tin can they'll take the lead completely.

However, they don't have their own message platform yet and that is still hurting them.

Otherwise, I agree. I have the iPhone XS Max and I'm done with them completely. They have almost completely stopped innovating, and I'm not talking about them introducing features that other phones have had for generations. You'd think the increased competition from other manufacturers would make them try but alas they have not.

by Anonymousreply 80March 11, 2019 7:54 AM

Don't buy Chinese phones folks per the state dept of US.

by Anonymousreply 81March 11, 2019 8:00 AM

Good luck finding a cheap new phone, R77. Unless you have an MVNO, all the major phone makers have jacked up their prices in the past year. I need a replacement for my 4 year old phone, and my carrier has nothing under $350. Most options are over $500.

by Anonymousreply 82March 11, 2019 7:32 PM

R82, what are you looking at?

by Anonymousreply 83March 11, 2019 7:34 PM
