I see nothing wrong with what he wrote. He believed a friend. It doesn’t make someone a bad person or an idiot to believe something their friend tells them. He expressed his support without slandering anyone. He didn’t mention Trump or MAGA hats. He simply said something general about hate.

Why should anyone feel stupid for initially supporting him? I think it would have been much worse and callous if people initially said he was just faking it, only to find out the incident were indeed true. People came to his defense and to support him, and investigation was done, and it was determined to be a false claim. It's not as if all incidents of hate crimes are faked.

Why is everyone on Dl so worked up over Ava Duvernay's reaction to this incident? She didn't defend Smollett very vigorously at all. She tweeted several days ago that his story had inconsistencies, but she just wasn't willing to automatically believe everything the CPD said, either. Seems reasonable enough.
