In my day, you were named after one of the saints whose feastday it was when you were born. So sure, you could be named Clair after St. Clair. But you could have real asshole parents who would name you Bonifacia after Pope Boniface.

And we weren't even Easter and Sunday Catholics.

We were wedding and funeral Catholics.

And you know who had to be the bride of every wedding and the corpse at every funeral.

The kid who's always acting out.

Always acting out because two assholes named her Bonifacia.

Latin countries did that before WWI, r77.

My grandfather was called Eduvigis, my grandmother lucked out with Anastasia.

But yes, there were people called Isidoro(a), Hermenegildo(a), Eusebio(a), Euripides, Gervasio(a), even Jesusa, if you were a girl born on Christmas Day.

I remember those names appearing frequently in my 7th grade Ortography books, which hadn’t been edited in decades because grammar hadn’t changed much by 1972.

by Anonymousreply 80January 24, 2019 11:03 AM

Ah, Letch Feeley.

We hardly knew ye, Letch.

And that was for the best.

by Anonymousreply 81January 24, 2019 11:04 AM

"Latin countries did that before WWI, [R77]."

Pretty sure Bonifacia was born WAY after WWI.

by Anonymousreply 82January 24, 2019 11:06 AM

Well, r82, some families upheld the custom for a longer time but I assure you it was no longer a religious requirement. The Great War and Industrial Revolution changed a lot of things by mixing up and transporting cultures
