271,268 feet is 51.4 miles or 82.7 km. By some definitions “space” is 50 miles or 80 km. Others use 100 km including the FAI which is the official international record keeping body. So whether the pilots are astronauts or not depends on which definition is used.

This is great, but it really does underscore just how crazy Spaceship One was when it won the X-Prize a whopping 14 years ago. It has taken this long for the concept to get back into space in a commercial form.
