Little Known Facts, That Are True

Dorothy Kilgallen punched tiny holes in her sleep mask.

by Anonymousreply 15December 15, 2018 3:46 AM

Why the comma?

by Anonymousreply 1December 13, 2018 10:12 AM

All facts are true OP. That is why they are facts.

by Anonymousreply 2December 13, 2018 12:51 PM

R2 Unless they’re alternative facts.

by Anonymousreply 3December 13, 2018 12:57 PM

OP, can you try again in English this time?

by Anonymousreply 4December 13, 2018 1:17 PM

For you, OP.

Actually the OP is correct, his use of a comma sets off part of a clause, which is correct.

To the other posters, the use of a comma intends to make a sentence clear, which this does by defining the OP wants only confirmed facts, not things that people think are true.

The sad part is you have 4 people that think the comma only has one use, and to make it worse, they can't think of anything to add that is clever or even relevant to a thread.

4. Do not use commas to set off essential elements of the sentence, such as clauses beginning with that (relative clauses). That clauses after nouns are always essential. That clauses following a verb expressing mental action are always essential.

That clauses after nouns:

The book that I borrowed from you is excellent.

The apples that fell out of the basket are bruised.

That clauses following a verb expressing mental action:

She believes that she will be able to earn an A.

He is dreaming that he can fly.

I contend that it was wrong to mislead her.

They wished that warm weather would finally arrive.

Examples of other essential elements (no commas):

Students who cheat only harm themselves.

The baby wearing a yellow jumpsuit is my niece.

The candidate who had the least money lost the election.

R6 is, actually, totally wrong about commas.

by Anonymousreply 8December 13, 2018 5:21 PM

Why would Dorothy Kilgallen do that?

by Anonymousreply 9December 13, 2018 5:44 PM

Who the fuck is Dorothy Kilgallen and why the fuck should I care about her sleep mask?

by Anonymousreply 10December 13, 2018 5:49 PM
