Sending food as a Christmas gift
I have elderly family members and want to get them a gift. They have everything but like snacks and cookies, etc.
I've ordered them Harry and David numerous times but want to get them something new. Does anyone have suggestions for places that sell similar items and do nice gift packages?
(No Hickory Farms please....ewwwwww)

Slightly different price points: Wine Country Gift Baskets Olive & Cocoa

OP - to send cookies - go to a great bakery in your town. Buy delicious cookies. Pack them in tissue then wads of bubble wrap and send. It's the personal touch that communicates. It will be fresher and cheaper.

I've ordered from Olive & Cocoa--very nice stuff, good presentation.

I've gotten Wine Country baskets. Don't.
I tried to gently suggest a gift in my name to charity might be a better bet. As it is, I drop them off at the nursing home down the street...

You can order from them online, although no idea where your price point is. NYC's Zabars and Balducci's have fabulous baskets and gifts, but they'll cost a bit more than some Pepperidge Farms Mint Milanos. Likewise Neiman-Marcus and Bloomingdales have great selections.
No idea what state you or they are in, either, but if weed is legal, a little something "special" along with the snacks and cookies will make certainly add to their holiday cheer!

If they're not very mobile and have difficulty getting out, what about a meal service like Freshly? Some will allow you to schedule as few as 2 meals a week.

Thanks everyone. Willing to spend a bit for something nice.
These are all lovely suggestions and I'm looking at them now.

I'd recommend sending a really nice assortment of chocolates from See's. Williams Sonoma offers a huge variety of high variety of high quality foods including peanut brittle and peppermint bark that comes in a personalized box.

Have something sent from Fortnam & Masons or Harrods in the UK. They will ship.

Swiss Chalet Fine Foods. Love their preserves. Order early in the week and it's there the next day!

Neiman Marcus has wonderful food gifts. And if you go to Costco they have gift baskets already made up and wrapped that you can send.

Sees candy is fabulous!! Good call, R14!!! Nuts.com has great snacks too!! NOT JUST NUTS! You might look at Vermont Country Store, or go to your local wine/cheese shop for a gift basket.. I think there's a website that has old-school candies they might enjoy---but I can't recall the name!

r22, I just got a nice gift box from Cheryl's cookies and besides the name Cheryl grossing me out because of DL, the cookies are not good. They taste full of chemicals, too sweet and too soft. I tried two (sugar and chocolate chip) and put the box in the office kitchen.
The last few times I've received Harry & David, the fruit was rotten.
The best cookies I've had in a very long time come from a little bakery in the Berkshires, Klara's Gourmet. I'm sending some to my mom & dad right now that I am thinking about it!

Where do they live? Local stores can make up a parcel and deliver it. Are you sure they wouldn't want a lovely prepared meal with desserts?

I was also going to suggest nuts.com -- they do customizable gift tins that are really delicious, though last year they weren't all that fancy. Still, we buy from them regularly, and they have some old-fashioned items like these enormous cream drops that I hadn't seen since I was a kid in the 1970s, so if you're looking for something that's retro that they might appreciate, it's worth a shot. I think they're just as good as Vermont Country Store in that regard.

Can anyone else vouch for Honey Baked Ham? I've always worried they would be too cloyingly sweet and ultra processed.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 12, 2018 8:48 PM

The little bit of honey sweet is just on the outside, r41. The rest is just juicy ham. It's a good ratio.

r41, here's a link to Hone Baked Ham nutritional information. Most of their food is dangerously high in sodium, which is unhealthy for anyone.

R44 Well, that is sort of the case with hams in general. The classic and quite expensive Virginia hams are so salty you can only have a couple of slices, but so delicious!

Yeah, hams in general are high in sodium.

I agree on the See's candies. They're authentic, they've been around forever, and they have a certain nostalgic charm that would suit the giftees.

There are "____ of the month" clubs for, literally, everything. Google it and you'll be able to find something that they'll love and then they get a little gift every month all year.
(Just to prove to myself that there was liberally one for everything, I just googled 'condom of the month' and, yep, there it is!)

Nuts "creme" drops:
Sugar, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, cocoa processed with alkali, whey (milk), salt, soy lecithin (an emulsifier), egg whites, invertase, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors. Packaged in the same facility as peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, and milk products.

Three days ago, I received a shipment of a box a Lagomarcino’s Chocolates in Moline, IL from my ex.
Despite me trying to eat ONE truffle a day, nearly the whole box of truffles is gone. Devoured. Fattie.
