I bought an object d'art

Found it on Craigslist, an old sculpture. Paid $100 which is what the seller was asking.

I sold it this morning to an art dealer for $2000.

I should feel guilty and normally I do feel guilty about anything and everything, but I really need the money after a family situation drained all my savings.

I'm sure the seller could have used the money too. I normally tell people when they have something under priced and pay more leaving room for me to make money too, but lately I've been very mercenary and low balling people to get things as cheaply as possible.

Speak words of comfort to me Datalounge.

You have an eye, put it to good use! You did well.

by Anonymousreply 1December 5, 2018 9:02 PM

The only solution is to...

burn down the place where you bought it so it can never be traced!

by Anonymousreply 2December 5, 2018 9:04 PM

What you did isn't criminal, it's standard business. However, why are you telling us that you feel ethically ambiguous? Just live with that. If you can't live with your own choices, give the guy you bought it from some money. I would think it odd but it would be somewhat a sign of character if you live your ethics.

Jesus sees you pulling shit so close to his birthday. He sees you.

by Anonymousreply 4December 5, 2018 9:09 PM

'Tis the season - you could contact the seller and send another $100 - will ease your guilt and double the seller's take.

by Anonymousreply 5December 5, 2018 9:13 PM

How did you figure out it was worth 2k, op?

by Anonymousreply 6December 5, 2018 9:14 PM

You steal my special objet, I put gypsy curse on you swishy man from town.

by Anonymousreply 7December 5, 2018 9:15 PM

Say three Hail Marys and two Our Fathers.

by Anonymousreply 8December 5, 2018 9:19 PM

can I have your stuff?

by Anonymousreply 9December 5, 2018 9:20 PM

R6 I remembered seeing something similar years ago on the British Antiques Roadshow and looked online and saw that it was worth more than $100.

by Anonymousreply 10December 5, 2018 9:20 PM

So . . . What exactly was the “objet d’art”? Was it like that mysterious “thing” that some DLer was having shipped from the UK and was stalking his mail carrier over?

by Anonymousreply 11December 5, 2018 9:30 PM

Please give more details! Could the seller have easily found the real value online or was the real value not so easy to discover?

by Anonymousreply 12December 5, 2018 9:33 PM

OP - the dealer will flip it and this time for 20K?

by Anonymousreply 13December 5, 2018 9:35 PM

R12 she clearly had internet access so she could have looked online for the value. She was the process of moving and was selling off a bunch of stuff, the sculpture being one.

It took me all of 20 minutes to find that it was worth more than $100.

by Anonymousreply 14December 5, 2018 9:36 PM

Maybe R13.

by Anonymousreply 15December 5, 2018 9:36 PM

Or, maybe OP was just lucky enough to resell a $100 item to some shmuck who was willing to pay 20 times what the “thing” is really worth.

by Anonymousreply 16December 5, 2018 9:37 PM

I love you R17.

by Anonymousreply 18December 5, 2018 9:39 PM

[quote] Say three Hail Marys and two Our Fathers.

It's a trap-- they want one of those Hail Marys for themselves. You only need to say ONE Hail Mary. And give Father a hand job.

by Anonymousreply 19December 5, 2018 9:40 PM

Maybe the seller could see you were experiencing tough times, and let you have it cheap as an act of kindness.

by Anonymousreply 20December 5, 2018 9:41 PM

OP, let it go. I'm sure there have been times where you were over charged for something. It evens out. You sound like a good person.

by Anonymousreply 21December 5, 2018 9:45 PM

What r14? Then good on you. I’m tired of people who are too lazy to do the simplest research on a subject. They are a drain on society, and your profit is karma that balances the scale.

by Anonymousreply 22December 5, 2018 10:10 PM

Well, the guilt has passed as I used the money to pay off some debt I had, but now I have some sadness. I know the chances of me finding something like this again are slim.

I wish I was financially well off and had been able to keep the sculpture rather than selling it to pay off a line of credit.

I no longer owe money, but I also have no savings and no art. I'm feeling pretty down.

by Anonymousreply 23December 13, 2018 10:04 PM

[quote]Jesus sees you pulling shit so close to his birthday. He sees you.

Don’t be ridiculous.

But Santa sees.

by Anonymousreply 24December 13, 2018 10:07 PM

"you could contact the seller and send another $100 - will ease your guilt and double the seller's take"

Or she might turn around and try to sue you for the full amount. Believe me, when I worked for law firm, we got FAR screwier stuff than that.

Accept, without guilt, that you hit a home run on this one - you weren't trying to, or even thinking about, defrauding the seller.

Caveat venditor

by Anonymousreply 25December 13, 2018 10:25 PM

0/10

by Anonymousreply 26December 13, 2018 10:33 PM

R26 - and? so?

by Anonymousreply 27December 13, 2018 10:39 PM

[quote]Or she might turn around and try to sue you for the full amount. Believe me, when I worked for law firm, we got FAR screwier stuff than that.

I hadn't even thought of that. Depressing thought.

by Anonymousreply 28December 13, 2018 10:42 PM

R14, I think that's part of the risk, as a seller, when you're moving house and want to offload stuff before the big move.

by Anonymousreply 29December 13, 2018 10:46 PM

Oh please. Virtue signaling.

by Anonymousreply 30December 13, 2018 10:50 PM

You're a ruthless shark. Good for you!

by Anonymousreply 31December 13, 2018 11:00 PM

The OP bought an "object j'art" for $100, sells it for $2000, and admits to " low balling people to get things as cheaply as possible", then asks for "words of comfort." I smell a very rancid, very pathetic troll.

by Anonymousreply 32December 13, 2018 11:07 PM

[quote]I smell a very rancid, very pathetic troll.

Take a bath R32.

by Anonymousreply 33December 13, 2018 11:16 PM

R33, you're either an idiot who believes the trolls that lurk around here or you are one. Either way, you're an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 34December 13, 2018 11:42 PM

-0 /10, r27?

by Anonymousreply 35December 13, 2018 11:46 PM

"object d'art"

Oh, cherie!

by Anonymousreply 36December 14, 2018 12:19 AM

How do you know it was worth only $2000, OP? Maybe you got taken, too.

by Anonymousreply 37December 14, 2018 12:27 AM

Feel better now. OP?^^^^^

by Anonymousreply 38December 14, 2018 2:39 AM

R37 I'm sure the dealer will sell it for more to some unsuspecting collector, but I sold it for what it was worth.

by Anonymousreply 39December 14, 2018 4:30 PM

I had the opposite problem of the OP.

I found a beautiful vintage Omega watch and paid $40 for it and sold it for $600. The money went towards my rent.

I know the chances of ever finding a watch like that again for $40 is impossible and I hated to sell it , but I felt it as luck that I found the watch right when I really needed money.

I wish I wasn't always broke and could have the watch.

by Anonymousreply 40December 26, 2018 4:06 PM

Don't worry, OP. Your internal guilt will attract the karma that makes you part with the profits in a way you feel you deserve (robbery, accident, lend it to someone and never get it back, etc.)
