I bought an object d'art
Found it on Craigslist, an old sculpture. Paid $100 which is what the seller was asking.
I sold it this morning to an art dealer for $2000.
I should feel guilty and normally I do feel guilty about anything and everything, but I really need the money after a family situation drained all my savings.
I'm sure the seller could have used the money too. I normally tell people when they have something under priced and pay more leaving room for me to make money too, but lately I've been very mercenary and low balling people to get things as cheaply as possible.
Speak words of comfort to me Datalounge.

You have an eye, put it to good use! You did well.

The only solution is to...
burn down the place where you bought it so it can never be traced!

What you did isn't criminal, it's standard business. However, why are you telling us that you feel ethically ambiguous? Just live with that. If you can't live with your own choices, give the guy you bought it from some money. I would think it odd but it would be somewhat a sign of character if you live your ethics.

'Tis the season - you could contact the seller and send another $100 - will ease your guilt and double the seller's take.

How did you figure out it was worth 2k, op?

R6 I remembered seeing something similar years ago on the British Antiques Roadshow and looked online and saw that it was worth more than $100.

So . . . What exactly was the “objet d’art”? Was it like that mysterious “thing” that some DLer was having shipped from the UK and was stalking his mail carrier over?

Please give more details! Could the seller have easily found the real value online or was the real value not so easy to discover?

OP - the dealer will flip it and this time for 20K?

R12 she clearly had internet access so she could have looked online for the value. She was the process of moving and was selling off a bunch of stuff, the sculpture being one.
It took me all of 20 minutes to find that it was worth more than $100.

Or, maybe OP was just lucky enough to resell a $100 item to some shmuck who was willing to pay 20 times what the “thing” is really worth.

[quote] Say three Hail Marys and two Our Fathers.
It's a trap-- they want one of those Hail Marys for themselves. You only need to say ONE Hail Mary. And give Father a hand job.

Maybe the seller could see you were experiencing tough times, and let you have it cheap as an act of kindness.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 5, 2018 9:41 PM

OP, let it go. I'm sure there have been times where you were over charged for something. It evens out. You sound like a good person.

What r14? Then good on you. I’m tired of people who are too lazy to do the simplest research on a subject. They are a drain on society, and your profit is karma that balances the scale.

Well, the guilt has passed as I used the money to pay off some debt I had, but now I have some sadness. I know the chances of me finding something like this again are slim.
I wish I was financially well off and had been able to keep the sculpture rather than selling it to pay off a line of credit.
I no longer owe money, but I also have no savings and no art. I'm feeling pretty down.

"you could contact the seller and send another $100 - will ease your guilt and double the seller's take"
Or she might turn around and try to sue you for the full amount. Believe me, when I worked for law firm, we got FAR screwier stuff than that.
Accept, without guilt, that you hit a home run on this one - you weren't trying to, or even thinking about, defrauding the seller.
Caveat venditor

I hadn't even thought of that. Depressing thought.

R14, I think that's part of the risk, as a seller, when you're moving house and want to offload stuff before the big move.

The OP bought an "object j'art" for $100, sells it for $2000, and admits to " low balling people to get things as cheaply as possible", then asks for "words of comfort." I smell a very rancid, very pathetic troll.

R37 I'm sure the dealer will sell it for more to some unsuspecting collector, but I sold it for what it was worth.

I had the opposite problem of the OP.
I found a beautiful vintage Omega watch and paid $40 for it and sold it for $600. The money went towards my rent.
I know the chances of ever finding a watch like that again for $40 is impossible and I hated to sell it , but I felt it as luck that I found the watch right when I really needed money.
I wish I wasn't always broke and could have the watch.

Don't worry, OP. Your internal guilt will attract the karma that makes you part with the profits in a way you feel you deserve (robbery, accident, lend it to someone and never get it back, etc.)
