Plants will close in Ohio and Michigan so it should help dems in 2020 at least

by Anonymousreply 2November 26, 2018 3:11 PM

"General Motors said Monday that it planned to idle three car plants and two transmission plants in a bid to trim costs as the North American auto sector slows.

The plants include a factory in Lordstown, Ohio, that makes the Chevrolet Cruze compact; the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, where the Chevrolet Volt, Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac CT6 are produced; and its plant in Oshawa, Ontario, which makes the Chevrolet Impala. The two transmission plants are in Baltimore and in Warren, Mich.

All five plants will halt production next year. “We are taking this action now while the company and the economy are strong to keep ahead of changing market conditions,” Mary T. Barra, G.M.’s chief executive, said in a conference call.

Some of the plants could resume production, depending on the outcome of contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union next year."

Trump starts a global trade war so GM looks for concessions from their UAW employees. So fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 4November 26, 2018 3:36 PM

GM has great cars in theory, but the execution always falls short because they allow the bean counters to sabotage their products by insisting on cheaply made interiors, poorly put together. People are aware of this. Trump is an asshole piece of shit who doesn’t deserve to live, but GM executives are partly to blame also.

by Anonymousreply 5November 26, 2018 3:40 PM

GM suck because they fall apart at 100k miles without fail R5. I've never had a Japanese car last less than 200k. And the maintenance is much cheaper

by Anonymousreply 6November 26, 2018 3:43 PM

Good. Fuck those Deplorables. They are so stupid and racist that they'll vote for him in 2020.

by Anonymousreply 7November 26, 2018 3:49 PM

When you can drive any kind of car you want, why would you buy a GM car? You know it will break down within months of driving it off the lot. You know they will argue about whether or not the breakdown is under warranty. You know you'll pay to get your car back because you have to drive to work — to pay for the car — and can't wait another three weeks for your attorney to write the letter and get a response from GM corporate. You know you'll have nothing but trouble with that POS until, at 100,000 miles, it just falls apart and the mechanic (not the GM dealership because you've given up on that joke of a profit center) says to you it's not worth the cost of the parts to repair it. You know, in the end, you'll be sorry you didn't just go to the Toyota dealership and buy a Camry like your sister, who is still driving what looks like a brand-new car and has had no repair bills, no lost work time sitting at the dealership, and nothing bad to say about the car she's driven you around in for years when your car wouldn't start.

by Anonymousreply 8November 26, 2018 3:50 PM

Yes I see no advantage to American cars whatsoever. They are worse in every category

by Anonymousreply 9November 26, 2018 3:53 PM

GM had to agree to a bailout with South Korea costing them nearly $7B in May, and a couple weeks later, Trump fucked them over with promises of tariffs on Asian metal and auto parts. This was going to happen sooner or later, thanks to Trump and his dippy love of tariffs.

When America learns how to build cars, perhaps I will consider buying one.

by Anonymousreply 11November 26, 2018 4:29 PM

Of course they waited til after the mid-term elections to do this.

Corporations are always in bed with the Russiapublicans.

[quote] insisting on cheaply made interiors, poorly put together.

Your first language is what?

by Anonymousreply 13November 26, 2018 5:06 PM

I would generally agree that gm quality is not up to toyota or honda. However I leased for 2 years recently a chevy malibu (while in a cash crunch period) and paid nothing up front and $235 a month for 2 years. I put 20k miles on the car and had zero problems and zero comp;aints other than the car was boring,

My mom recently traded in a 2010 honda accord ex v6 that she bought new,,,, It had about 100k miles on it. She had no trouble until it hit about 80k miles and then the check engine light kept coming on and it would run roughly. It turns out the car was using a qt of oil every 1000 miles. When she topped off the oil the check light would go off and it wouldnt run roughly...............I googled the problem and apparently honda had a faulty v6 engine it had been using for about 5 model years. They didnt want to take responsiblity to the 100 s of complaints and there was a class action suit against..... them but you had to fight tooth and nail for them to do anything about it and the honda dealership pretended they never heard of the problem. We ended up cutting our losses and trading it in for a new toyota camry and so far with 30k miles, no problem.

My point is any brand can have problems but I would agree for your mid price vehcles I still fell its best to go japanese.

R9 R11

If you knew anything about the current market you'd know GM and Ford are building cars that out perform their Asian counterparts. You have a mindset stuck in the 90's. Detroit doesn't work that way anymore because they cannot afford to.

by Anonymousreply 15June 23, 2019 4:24 PM

American manufacturing corporations do not want to take the hit of expensive labour nor do their shareholders. I don't see a solution. Do you? If only service workers were unionised and well paid.

by Anonymousreply 16June 23, 2019 4:31 PM

US automakers are only recently playing catch up but it’s too little too late. You don’t see Japanese automakers releasing a vehicle then discontinuing it a few years later because no one is buying it.

by Anonymousreply 17June 23, 2019 4:35 PM

Don't worry Tiffany, daddy lost his job and we will have to move to grandma's shitty little house, far away from your friends... but rejoice, for we still own the libs !

by Anonymousreply 18June 23, 2019 4:38 PM

]quote]When you can drive any kind of car you want, why would you buy a GM car? You know it will break down within months of driving it off the lot.

I've heard too many horror stories to not believe you, but the last few GM rental cars I've had were really spiffy little cars. They seemed well built, and they had a lot more character than the average Asian car.

by Anonymousreply 19June 23, 2019 4:46 PM

We get that you hate Trump, but people shouldn’t be rooting against American car companies.

American taxpayers bailed them out.

by Anonymousreply 20June 23, 2019 4:49 PM

R20 and hopefully we won’t bail their sorry asses out again. They are not Govt institutions.

by Anonymousreply 21June 23, 2019 4:52 PM

Steel and aluminum tariffs bite! But but but...Trump claimed: 'Trade wars are good, and easy to win.' LOL

I hope the ultimate casualty from trade wars will be Trump's loss in 2020.

R20, the American car companies root against themselves by creating POS cars that pale in comparison to their Japanese and German counterparts. Plus the cost of American healthcare add nearly $2000 to each American car.

Shouldn’t. These companies be pushing for single payer?

by Anonymousreply 23June 23, 2019 5:18 PM

[Quote] I've heard too many horror stories to not believe you, but the last few GM rental cars I've had were really spiffy little cars.

All cars work great when they’re new. It’s when they reach about 80k miles that American cars start falling apart

by Anonymousreply 24June 23, 2019 5:19 PM

[Quote] We get that you hate Trump, but people shouldn’t be rooting against American car companies.

It’s the free market at work. Create an inferior product, charge high prices. Industry dies.

by Anonymousreply 25June 23, 2019 5:21 PM

GM makes cars that don’t last and have interiors that look like off-brand LEGOs.

by Anonymousreply 26June 23, 2019 5:59 PM

I've often wondered that myself R23. American companies spent millions and millions on health care for employees. At worst they could take that money, pay it in taxes, and be out of the health care administration part of it (large companies often have dozens of HR employees to deal with benefits).

You would think they would be the 1st to be in line to push for single payer.

I work in the line of business (HR/Benefits) and when Obamacare came "on-line" there was a widespread belief among consultants/think tanks that companies would just give employees X dollars of money per month and say, "go find your own insurance on the exchanges".

It just never happened (even at places like Walmart) and I'm not sure why.

by Anonymousreply 27June 23, 2019 6:12 PM

R27 because their employees would find somewhere else to work.

by Anonymousreply 28June 23, 2019 6:15 PM

number of cars in production + used cars available for purchase in 2019 > number of people who need to purchase a vehicle

by Anonymousreply 29June 23, 2019 6:16 PM

Trump’s booming economy is going to crash badly and a Democratic Presidency will have to fix it once again. Why are Americans so stupid?

by Anonymousreply 30June 23, 2019 6:22 PM

Fiat/Chrysler has just introduced the Jeep Gladiator, a pickup truck based off the Jeep Wrangler, in May. Dealers are already charging and getting 20K over sticker price for the vehicle (which lists from 46K to 62K).

Once FC's abysmal record for workmanship, quality and reliability comes through, those idiots who paid 20K over sticker won't be able to give these pieces of crap away. Why are some people so stupid?

by Anonymousreply 31June 23, 2019 7:32 PM

R28, yep! My company administers health & welfare, pension, and 401(k) benefits for various companies. During the formation of the Affordable Care Act, my company fought tooth and nail against single payer. One because it would drastically reduce their business, but also because it would give employees more power.

In 2005 I traded my 1994 Ford Escort in for a 2002 Honda Civic. The mechanic joked he hadn’t seen a Ford that old in awhile. I finally traded in my Honda a couple of years ago for a new 2017 RAV4. When I was researching, there weren’t any American SUVs that came close to the reviews of the RAV4 or the Honda CRV. The Ford Escape had decent reviews, but I wasn’t willing to take a risk just to buy American.

by Anonymousreply 32June 23, 2019 7:47 PM

Trump just lost Michigan, and this will hurt him in Ohio. The ripple effects of these plants closing will be felt by many in the communities.

by Anonymousreply 33June 23, 2019 8:32 PM

[quote] And earlier bets on smaller cars have had to be unwound as consumers have gravitated toward pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles as a result of low gasoline prices.

GM is out of touch with their customers.

by Anonymousreply 34June 23, 2019 10:44 PM

My first car was a 1967 Chevy Impala.

I put 250K+ miles on that thing and sold it 10 years later at a 100% profit.

I loved that car. I could fix it and make it run. It was a beast but man, did it suck up the gas.

by Anonymousreply 35June 24, 2019 2:13 AM

[quote] Plants will close in Ohio and Michigan so it should help dems in 2020 at least

I wonder. I think it was clear that Obama was trying to save the auto industry and Republicans wanted to let them fail. Yet at the next presidential election, Michigan and Ohio voted for Trump. It’s inexplicable to me.

by Anonymousreply 36June 24, 2019 2:33 AM

Maybe it wasn't the auto workers who voted for Trump. In Ohio, it was the bucolics who went overwhelmingly for Trump. Coupled with the rednecks of Cincinnati and southern Ohio, the union voters and the urban population were outvoted.

by Anonymousreply 37June 24, 2019 2:37 AM

I've had a Chevy Cruze for the last 4 years and it has been great. My next car will undoubtedly be another Chevy.

by Anonymousreply 38June 24, 2019 5:03 AM

R38 is a poor

by Anonymousreply 39June 24, 2019 5:08 AM

Whatever happened to all the factories that were promised?

We could have used them to help with the covid response. But so many were closed under this administration.
