Was Mr Boldwood portrayed as a Pathetic Loser in Far from the Madding Crowd's Novel?!

If you've read Far from the Madding Crowd's Novel by Thomas Hardy, Was Mr Boldwood portrayed as a pathetic delusional Loser the way it's portrayed in movies, I watched the 1967 movie version, Mr Boldwood's pathetic character (played by Peter Finch) irritated me so much that i was glad when he was jailed for life at the end of the movie.
