Tracy Chapman sues Nicki Minaj over unauthorised sample

Love Tracy.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 23, 2018 10:13 PM |
Minaj didn't even try to disguise it.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 23, 2018 10:18 PM |
I hope it bankrupts her and forces her to buy a slow car.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 23, 2018 10:30 PM |
Good for Chapman.
Minaj is a trash can.
And a bully.

On a related note, I always think of stuff like this whenever someone at some award show accuses some white rapper of cultural appropriation. No one ever gets called to task for the out and out stealing that rappers do and then call it sampling. Look at that Rhianna rap song where they sampled the entire Santana song, Maria Maria. Or sometimes it's not even rap like when Aloe Blacc sampled Elton John's "Your Song" on his song th e Man. Now in both cases they probably ended up getting paid but they don't ask permission before doing this stuff.

Get her, Trayce!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 23, 2018 10:52 PM |
I remember Sting was quoted as saying something like, they just steal your shit. It's crazy. I can't stand Sting, but he had a point. I also remember he completely surrendered to the whole thing when he sang onstage with P. Diddy. It was so bad and embarrassing.

Don’t the record companies check to see if they rights to the songs before releasing the albums???
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 23, 2018 11:45 PM |
Gurl, you dont mess with our lesbian brethren.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 24, 2018 1:06 AM |
Talkin' 'bout a resolution
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 24, 2018 1:13 AM |
Minaj said she never heard it before. That’s gotta hurt.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 24, 2018 1:50 AM |
[quote]Minaj said she never heard it before.
She never heard it before, but she uses the exact same lyrics with the same melodic cadence. Ok...
I don't blame Tracy for not giving authorization. Minaj's version completely bastardizes Tracy's gorgeous original.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 24, 2018 2:03 AM |
Nicki's version sounds like a well loved cassette of Tracy Chapman being eaten in a tape deck of a Subaru Forester.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 24, 2018 2:21 AM |
The original is a perfect song. Nicki butchered it.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 24, 2018 2:24 AM |
Team Tracy ! I LOVE that girl, and her talent is so way beyond anything Minaj could ever hope to aspire to. Wich makes it even sadder that trash like Minaj have all the damn money.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 24, 2018 2:29 AM |
Minaj is a fucking trash pile.
Tracy Chapman is a gifted talent. Her debut album is one of the greatest debut albums of all time. It's a classic.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 24, 2018 2:31 AM |
Get those coins Tracy!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 24, 2018 2:09 PM |
Who would win in a physical altercation?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 24, 2018 2:12 PM |
Never underestimate an old lesbian, R19. Tracy would just have to pop Nicki's ass cheek or lips.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 24, 2018 2:14 PM |
An Millenials mad at Chapman for invoking her copywriters rights on their stealing qween. Clue=nothing starts or ends with you or those you "stan" for,beats,looks,melodies,dances..etc are stolen from those who came before you.You need to respect that,if you can't. ...you will pay up.Simple as that
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 24, 2018 2:19 PM |
The kid would wither into a puddle in Chapman’s presence.
Old school has integrity, wisdom & power.
New school is selfish & shallow. They are destroying themselves.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 24, 2018 2:20 PM |
They don’t ask for permission to sample because the courts have ruled that they do not have to. They just have to pay. So why would they ask permission? To be polite?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 24, 2018 2:22 PM |
R19 Tracy would mop the floor with Nicki. Dyke bars are war zones!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 24, 2018 9:42 PM |
[quote]So why would they ask permission? To be polite?
Yes. And to give credit where it's due. Anything else is being a creep.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 24, 2018 9:52 PM |
The original is such a beautiful song. Tracy can convey so much meloncholy longing in her voice.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 24, 2018 10:09 PM |
Team Tracy!
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 24, 2018 10:16 PM |
Tracey looks like she's gonna rock down to Electric Avenue to collect her award check...
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 24, 2018 10:17 PM |
Britney=shitney
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 24, 2018 11:04 PM |
This thread made me break out Tracy's first album, I haven't listened to it in a while. God it was so good, and it hasn't aged a day.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 24, 2018 11:06 PM |
Remember when I was playin, playin with myself at speeds so fast felt like I was drunk.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 24, 2018 11:10 PM |
Yes, you do need permission from the owner of the copyright. Ask George Harrison (I know, he's dead).
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 24, 2018 11:16 PM |
The thing is they did ask Tracy permission. Tracy, naturally having taste and principles told them NO. So they went ahead and used her song anyway. Hell hath no fury like a womyn scored.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 24, 2018 11:21 PM |
Tracy should drive over that talentless Minaj bitch with her Subaru Forrester.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 24, 2018 11:23 PM |
This is such a blatant hero/villain story. For years now, Nicki has been an out of control monster. Tracy is a dignified and towering talent. So much karma coming Nicki’s way.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 24, 2018 11:32 PM |
It's nice to think that there was once a time when truly talented artists like Tracy Chapman were big stars and their music was played on pop radio and other mainstream venues. God, it's depressing to look at the current scene with all the talentless morons.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 24, 2018 11:49 PM |
Nicky is not even worth being Tracy’s shoeshiner. Hope Tracy wipes her clean.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 24, 2018 11:51 PM |
Tracy needs to drive a fast car over this bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 25, 2018 12:38 AM |
I love Nicki and there are like 5 sad lesibians who need to shut the fuck up. Coosie popping 80's bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 25, 2018 1:11 AM |
No one gives a fuck what you think, r40.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 25, 2018 2:14 AM |
I'm not into humorless lesbians OR no-talent liars, so I can be extremely objective about this. Tracy is right, Nicki is wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 25, 2018 2:18 AM |
That was pretty bad though, cant believe she was proud of that
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 25, 2018 2:23 AM |
This is all that needs to be said here. R40, listen up:

Thank you, R37.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 25, 2018 2:43 AM |
Maybe if Nikki'd sung the right words, at the right time, she wouldn't be fined.
