Who are Hollywoods and TVs overactors?

Jiim Carrey overacts in many roles. Shatner no doubt. I have never liked Anna Paquin but based on that clip in True Blood. Yikes.

Carrey owns this thread. This outtake alone was funnier than the entire movie.

"Overact" is a term used by people who don't know anything about acting.

by Anonymousreply 6October 23, 2018 5:21 PM

I know I’m going to get shit for this, but Judith Light owns this thread. There isn’t a piece of scenery on every set she’s been on that she hasn’t (over) eaten.

Anna Paquin is really over the top. I'm not surprised her roles in the U.S. dried up after True Blood. She's mostly worked on Canadian and UK productions since then. Though she does have a role in the next Scorsese film, so maybe that will be a comeback.

by Anonymousreply 11October 23, 2018 6:00 PM

Roddy McDowall - his performance inThe Legend of Hell House is exquisite.

Trueblood was kind of campy all over so her acting there fit.

Bette Midler owns this fucking thread. That monologue....

Jesse Eisenberg, could he be less likeable? Jennifer Lawrence (how she got roles past Winter's Bone is thanks to Harvey) Bradley Cooper Ed Helms Justin Timberlake Kate Winslet in recent years (how dare she try to do Mildred Pierce!)

by Anonymousreply 15October 23, 2018 9:04 PM

I not only will not give R7 shit, I will agree with him wholeheartedly.

by Anonymousreply 16October 24, 2018 2:49 AM

R15, I’m not sure you understand overacting.

by Anonymousreply 17October 24, 2018 2:51 AM

Are the Brits, in Britain and in the USA, known for overacting? I wonder who are the worst ones in the world.

by Anonymousreply 18October 24, 2018 9:41 AM

Lea Michele

Tori Spelling

I'm also going to nominate Tom Hiddleston. I've only seen him in Wallander and he was fine in that, but he overacts in every interview or media appearance I've seen linked here on DL.

Alan A l d a, Jim Carrey, the cast of Modern Family, the cast of This Is Us, Desi Arnaz from the past, So many. Most actors match up well to their characters so there isn't much acting. I will say Justin did a good job on Revenge. But that show was better written than This Is Us.

by Anonymousreply 21October 24, 2018 12:42 PM

The entire cast of MASH

by Anonymousreply 22October 24, 2018 12:48 PM

Cancer Salad on A Million Little Things.

by Anonymousreply 23October 24, 2018 12:51 PM

Not only is he a horrible actor, but Bobby Cannavale owns this thread. He's always the kiss of death on any show they hire him to and I'm convinced he's either killed off or fired because he's so bad and hammy.

^ I still want to suck his nuts every time I see him.

by Anonymousreply 25October 24, 2018 1:17 PM

A lot of older, once great actors have turned into ridiculous overacting hams - Pacino and Walken in particular.

I'm surprised that Vincent D'Onofrio hasn't been mentioned yet. My mother commented, after watching him on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent", "That's acting with a capital A."

by Anonymousreply 29October 24, 2018 2:08 PM

Growing up in the early 80s my sisters would watch General Hospital religiously. I always remember my mother leaving the room when Tony Geary (Luke) scenes came on because he was so hammy. But truthfully, that's probably standard for soap operas.

by Anonymousreply 30October 24, 2018 2:18 PM

Sterling K. Brown on This is Us.

by Anonymousreply 31October 24, 2018 2:29 PM

Robin Williams was the precursor to Jim Carrey in terms of not being able to turn it down a notch, though Williams could manage it occasionally.

by Anonymousreply 32October 24, 2018 2:48 PM

Bobby Cannavale, every time he took a snort of blow on Vinyl, was the best example of over-acting ever.

by Anonymousreply 33October 24, 2018 3:21 PM

[quote]Jesse Eisenberg, could he be less likeable?

I like him more than most actors.

by Anonymousreply 34October 24, 2018 3:29 PM

When I think scenery chewing I think of Diane Baker. She could cut 90% and still be over the top.

by Anonymousreply 35October 24, 2018 3:30 PM

[quote]Justin did a good job on Revenge. But that show was better written than This Is Us.

Revenge was one of the worst-written shows in the history of television. Your opinions on anything else will be given the weight they deserve.

by Anonymousreply 36October 24, 2018 3:31 PM

Lee Grant owns this thread.

by Anonymousreply 37October 24, 2018 3:46 PM

Walken was never a good actor. The only reason he got that early supporting Oscar was because he happens to have crazy eyes.

by Anonymousreply 38October 24, 2018 7:41 PM

John Travolta OWNS this thread.

by Anonymousreply 39October 24, 2018 7:44 PM

R36 For tv soaps, Revenge was great FAR superior to the overly P C This is Puss. It was damn good soap with lots of hunks.

Shatner may own this thread.

by Anonymousreply 40October 24, 2018 7:47 PM

Lol. So true.

by Anonymousreply 41November 15, 2018 11:01 PM

Funny reading the other thread about 'Great Actors' because most Brits think that Anthony Hopkins has spent most of his Hollywood career monstrously overacting.

by Anonymousreply 42November 15, 2018 11:12 PM

And almost the whole cast of Downton Abbey.

by Anonymousreply 43November 15, 2018 11:15 PM

Jim Carrey overacts for comic effect though, far different than Shatner who expected to be taken seriously.

by Anonymousreply 44November 16, 2018 12:18 AM

William Shatner, who never met a piece of scenery he didn’t devour. Although James “I’m coming apart! I’m losing my mind!” Brolin in “Amityville Horror” is pretty great.

by Anonymousreply 45November 16, 2018 12:52 AM

De Niro may have been great once, but he's uncontrollably hammy now.

by Anonymousreply 46November 16, 2018 11:42 AM

Interestingly, Brolin now has a lovely comic touch in that execrable TV show that manages to make even Dianne Wiest look silly.
