We are not a Democracy.

Our leaders actively inhibit voting. They make it difficult to register and difficult to cast a ballot. They throw people off the rolls over dumb technicalities or just strangely “lose” people’s registrations, with no warning or explanation. We allow election officials to run for office, creating the situation currently in Georgia, where a gubernatorial candidate is able to control who votes and is predictably disenfranchising thousands as it suits him.

These are ALL the actions of REPUBLICANS. I haven’t even listed all of the worst offenses. Why aren’t we talking about this? Why are so many just accepting it? WHY AREN’T WE REVOLTING AGAINST THIS???

by Anonymousreply 36October 23, 2018 8:33 PM

Vote Democratic Nov 7th. VOTE! If 65% of eligible voters vote- there will be a landslide for Democrats and these antidemocratic measures designed to keep (Democrats) from voting who want to vote will be dealt with. If you do not vote (adults < 35 years old vote at a 20% rate) nothing will change. Democracy works best when the people participate!

by Anonymousreply 1October 22, 2018 3:18 PM

Uh, Democrats have Superdelegates, which weakens your vote for POTUS.

by Anonymousreply 2October 22, 2018 3:26 PM

Democracy is over everywhere. Wait till the great dying off and WW3 to see what the next system will be.

by Anonymousreply 3October 22, 2018 3:58 PM

The election is November 6th, Charlie. Jesus.

by Anonymousreply 4October 22, 2018 4:01 PM

R3 with one of the dumbest replies in DL history.

by Anonymousreply 5October 22, 2018 4:02 PM

No, OP, we're a constitutional federal republic with a strong democratic tradition.

by Anonymousreply 6October 22, 2018 4:05 PM

Democrats do have fucked up leadership, R2, but “has Superdelagates” kinda pales in comparison to “controls voter rolls in state where currently running for governor, actively throwing hundreds of thousands off the roles and closing polling places en masse, rigging entire election in favor.”

Care to respond, doofus?

by Anonymousreply 7October 22, 2018 4:05 PM

R6 actually thinks he’s intelligent.

by Anonymousreply 8October 22, 2018 4:07 PM

Wait till november6 R5. It might be very soon.

by Anonymousreply 9October 22, 2018 4:11 PM

Would you rather have a ruthless dictatorship that kills its own journalist and free thinkers just because they have their own opinions?

I’ll take democracy any day, thanks.

by Anonymousreply 10October 22, 2018 4:19 PM

Your former Republic has been a corporate oligarchy for decades.

by Anonymousreply 11October 22, 2018 4:20 PM

The idea of vibrant popular democracy in America was the exception, not the rule, in our history. The Founding Fathers made sure the unwashed masses couldn’t choose the President, the Senate, or federal judges. And of course they restricted voting to a certain group of people. The elites don’t like democracy because our interests aren’t their interests. So you can either trick people into voting against their interests, or stop people from voting at all. The GOP has figured out how to do both.

by Anonymousreply 12October 22, 2018 4:43 PM

Agree R11. Just wait until progressives try to change the system to favor actual working people-- the strings will get pulled to stop it cold.

by Anonymousreply 13October 22, 2018 5:14 PM

Typo R4, is that ok with you?

by Anonymousreply 14October 22, 2018 5:16 PM

Not to pile on Charlie, but I learned that the US is a representational republic as opposed to a democracy in 7th grade. Did you take Civics?

by Anonymousreply 15October 22, 2018 5:21 PM

R15, representational republic is a form or a framework for a democracy- as opposed to a Parliamentary system for example. We have to get rid of the electoral college, control gerrymandering, and of course get rid of pols who pervert the system by attempting to block voting. And of course the GOP is mostly engaged in that last bit of nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 16October 22, 2018 5:32 PM

Yeah yeah all true. But too late

by Anonymousreply 17October 22, 2018 5:48 PM

We are a nation state founded by rich white men who wanted to protect their money and property ( land, women, slaves). They started a war with a king on the back of poorer men with the promise of no serfdom and freedom the king wouldn't allow. They bankrupted the French, won the war, and then wrote a paper of government that was so flawed from the start ( slaves are 1/3 people, women couldn't vote, an electoral college so the mass vote could be kept in check) that we still debate and change it now. Then they proceeded to destroy Native Americans, enslave black people- in various ways, marginalize women and called it progress. The fact that we haven't become a fascist nation still is unbelievable because Americans from the start have been obtuse, easily lead away from their true propose, voted against their own needs and wants, and destroyed their morals for fame and money at every chance. Democracy is a joke we tell ourselves to keep from revolting. But sooner or later we will have to decide whether to accept our state or die trying to build a more perfect union. Meanwhile no matter what we will still see our brother as our enemy. We are built that way.

by Anonymousreply 18October 22, 2018 7:50 PM

Constitutional republic is our type of government, it is not mutually exclusive to the concept of “democracy.” The U.S. does, indeed, consider itself a democracy, and has certainly tried to force other nations to be “democracies” as well. Pretending otherwise with some smug “we’re a republic, aaaactually” is asinine as fuck.

But it’s all a fucking fallacy, and you can shove your hoary old civic lessons up your neoliberal asses, if there’s any room left in there, what with your heads so firmly embedded in the same place.

by Anonymousreply 19October 23, 2018 7:27 PM

[quote]Typo [R4], is that ok with you?

Is it okay that you’re so fucking addled you can’t even keep the date of the election straight? No, actually, it’s not. Go take a nap, Charlie.

by Anonymousreply 20October 23, 2018 7:29 PM

We were never a democracy, drop out, OP. We're a republic. Jesus.

by Anonymousreply 21October 23, 2018 7:31 PM

A republic is a representative democracy. And we changed the constitution so that we elect senators directly, R21,

by Anonymousreply 22October 23, 2018 7:32 PM

[quote] WHY AREN’T WE REVOLTING AGAINST THIS???

What are you doing, OP? Provide details, please. If you want a revolution, are you organizing it?

by Anonymousreply 23October 23, 2018 7:34 PM

Ummm...we're a police state and have been since we lost habeas corpus after 9-11.

by Anonymousreply 24October 23, 2018 7:34 PM

R21, rushing right in to prove her stupidity by not reading the thread.

by Anonymousreply 25October 23, 2018 7:35 PM

R23 I organize every waking, spare minute. You have no idea.

by Anonymousreply 26October 23, 2018 7:35 PM

No r22, the US is a federal republic.

by Anonymousreply 27October 23, 2018 7:35 PM

Oligarchy, OP. Remember the 2014 study by the Princeton professor?

Of course I have no idea, OP, because you don't provide any of the details.

by Anonymousreply 29October 23, 2018 7:37 PM

OP = Bernie Sanders

by Anonymousreply 30October 23, 2018 7:41 PM

Are you organizing, R29? Please, tell us every detail. So we can troll and mock you mercilessly.

Seriously, what exactly is ypur point? Do you have one?

by Anonymousreply 31October 23, 2018 7:47 PM

R30 = Jill Stein

by Anonymousreply 32October 23, 2018 7:48 PM

Republicans are going to start saying we're a "mixed polity" - part democracy, part ... something else. They're going to legitimize it that way. Or they'll just revert to saying we're a republic (thus the popular vote doesn't decide who's in office - not just the electoral college for the president, but gerrymandering and the rural vote advantage (e.g., 2 senators from CA and WY each)).

by Anonymousreply 33October 23, 2018 7:49 PM

R27 jfc. I understand you got your political science flash card set. Now, go to the library and read an actual book. And yup R28 is right. And for laughs North Carolina isn't a democracy.

by Anonymousreply 34October 23, 2018 7:50 PM

Ack! Ack!

by Anonymousreply 35October 23, 2018 8:28 PM

It's a really flawed representative democracy, with a special emphasis on gerrymandering, gaming the Electoral College, and voter suppression. That's all in your court, GOP.
