Their relationship only started around the Live Aid concert (when the film ends), so it's not a big part of the film, but his realization of being gay is portrayed, albeit a bit melodramatically. His gay manager is portrayed as a villain and seducer.

Malek fails to capture the joy and charisma of Mercury. Gwilym Lee is dead-on as Brian May. The concert scenes are fun, as is the gradual inspiration and creation of the song 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and its radio-play controversy.

He was able to get treatment and avoided contracting AIDS but died in 2010 of lung cancer.
