Danny Kaye looks very comfortable in this scene.

NL’s Christmas Vacation is a favorite. The old ladies in my family (well into their 80’s) roar with laughter.

R20, what is Cosy Dens? I'm assuming British because of your cosy spelling.

The Polar Express - with Tom Hanks in 2004

It is geared for kids, but all ages can be entertained.

by Anonymousreply 23October 12, 2018 3:34 PM

The George C. Scott version of "A Christmas Carol" is my go-to movie. Stretching the definition of "movie" a bit, I'd also add the animated version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

by Anonymousreply 24October 12, 2018 4:05 PM

R22 Actually it's a Czech film (I was introduced to it when I was on student exchange in Olomouc a few years ago). On the evening of December 25th the entire country is glued to their TV screens when these two films are shown: "Three Wishes for Cinderella" at 8 PM (this one isn't really a Christmas film per se, but there are plenty of snowy landscapes to admire in it), immediately followed by "Cosy Dens". It has become their Christmas tradition (just like Swedish people have a weird habit of watching Donald Duck cartoons every year on Christmas Eve).

Cosy Dens is a fucking bittersweet masterpiece but I guess you have to know a few basic things about Czech history and their customs in order to fully appreciate it.

by Anonymousreply 25October 12, 2018 4:13 PM

The Polar Express is fucking awful, with those creepy dead eyes all the characters have and the North Pole which looks more like North Korea.

I think Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol was a bit better, because that story is supposed to be creepy so the motion capture technique suited it better.
