Time For This Thread Again: How long have you been visiting DataLounge? And how did you find it?

I started coming here in August 2003 after a Google search for: dyke on SVU

by Anonymousreply 138November 19, 2019 2:50 AM

I can't remember the year but I was still using a dial up modem. Maybe after the high tech stock market crash. I was googling Jodie Foster.

by Anonymousreply 1September 30, 2018 11:41 PM

Michael Musto mentioned DL in one of his VV columns back in 2006 and included a link. I clicked on it and have been here ever since.

by Anonymousreply 2September 30, 2018 11:52 PM

Googled The Normal Heart In 2014. Found a wonderful mixture of gay wit and wisdom and snark and nudity and got addicted.

by Anonymousreply 3October 1, 2018 12:00 AM

Finished reading "You'll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again," back in the late 90s. (I was home with the Flu; it was a good read.) One of the stories in this book contained the author's recollection of a Malibu Key Party, whose hostess was a Lily White Songstress from the 80s.

Back in 2005 I was cruising around Google, typed in the book's name and the songstress's boyfriend's name, and Voila!

Been here ever since.

by Anonymousreply 4October 1, 2018 12:01 AM

Started here in 1999 but as an eldergay I don't remember how I found it.

by Anonymousreply 5October 1, 2018 12:04 AM

David E. We were on Salon.com's Table Talk. I rumor got around that Table Talk was going to become a pay site.

by Anonymousreply 6October 1, 2018 12:08 AM

I did a Yahoo search for "gay gossip", that was in the fall of 2000, been here ever since.

by Anonymousreply 7October 1, 2018 12:09 AM

Wanted to know who was gay on the soaps

by Anonymousreply 8October 1, 2018 12:12 AM

Not long. A co-worker

by Anonymousreply 9October 1, 2018 12:13 AM

I found the site about a year before the format was changed. I was following a search on a professional athlete that eventually brought me to this site.

by Anonymousreply 10October 1, 2018 12:16 AM

Summer of 2001. I don't know how I found it, but I had been coming here for a while before "WTC is an Insatiable Bottom."

by Anonymousreply 11October 1, 2018 12:16 AM

i discovered DL as a college freshman in 1995, forgot about it, then rediscovered it in 2013 when the aaron rodgers scandal hit the news.

by Anonymousreply 12October 1, 2018 12:18 AM

by Anonymousreply 13October 1, 2018 12:20 AM

Sometime in the mid-2000s I found out about the Prancing Ponies and tried to discover their trail here. Came back periodically.

by Anonymousreply 14October 1, 2018 12:21 AM

I think it was 2003 -2005 for me... when was the red dragon cheese thread going on?

by Anonymousreply 15October 1, 2018 12:26 AM

I googled a something, and a link to Datalounge appeared. This was around 2014 or so. I was hooked since then.

by Anonymousreply 16October 1, 2018 12:30 AM

Prancing ponies and Tom cruise scandals. I’d say 2005

by Anonymousreply 17October 1, 2018 12:30 AM

Around 2007. Some online story piqued my interest and I started searching for more info on the topic. Voilà.

by Anonymousreply 18October 1, 2018 12:34 AM

Late 90's. Some website mentioned Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 19October 1, 2018 12:48 AM

A year ago. And the amount of time I’ve wasted here is obscene. I would have wasted my 40s if I found it any earlier. Forget how I found it.

by Anonymousreply 20October 1, 2018 12:53 AM

I think it was around 5 years ago. I was searching for golden girls forums

by Anonymousreply 21October 1, 2018 12:58 AM

No one told me about it. I believe I googled gay forums or something similar and DL appeared in the beginning part of the list. That was several years ago.

by Anonymousreply 22October 1, 2018 12:59 AM

1996. Soap gossip.

by Anonymousreply 23October 1, 2018 1:03 AM

2001. I found it through Alt. Gossip.celebrities- usenet.

by Anonymousreply 24October 1, 2018 1:06 AM

A website that linked to thread about Peter North (big gay porn star who crossed over into straight porn and became an even big star there). This was in the early 2000s. I didn't get addicted to the site right away though. But soon got addicted to the huge variety of threads here. Back then, there was some real gossip insiders posting here too.

by Anonymousreply 25October 1, 2018 1:07 AM

GAYBC, a defunct internet station of the late 90's, briefly mentioned DL on the air. I didn't like it much, but came back September 11th. 2001 and have read the site almost daily since. It grows on you.

by Anonymousreply 26October 1, 2018 1:15 AM

I can't remember but its been quite a long time. Probably late 90's. I got my AOL email in 1994. That was my first and only email.

by Anonymousreply 27October 1, 2018 1:18 AM

Googled "I hate Zoe Chace's voice" who at that time was a reporter on the podcast Planet Money. Found a whole thread of Zoe Chace haters as well as other voices on NPR--it was all really hilarious (that cooking show lady who's gone now was described with a voice of "breathy fatness" that just blew me away at how apt it was). This was in about 2012. There used to be a lot more funny threads like that. Not sure where all the funny people went or at least funny threads--are they off being funny somewhere else I don't know about?

by Anonymousreply 28October 1, 2018 1:23 AM

I've written this several times over the years whenever there's a thread like this. I searched for "Joey Lawrence butt" in the late 90s and found a thread about that here. I stayed here for a bit but then sort of forgot about DL. I then did the same in the early 2000s, and have stayed since. Funny now that there's a thread about "Joey Lawrence bankrupt".

by Anonymousreply 29October 1, 2018 1:30 AM

r28, that was a super funny thread. No one can be funny anymore because there are all these dummies here now who don't recognize humor and kill the mood.

by Anonymousreply 30October 1, 2018 1:48 AM

This has become my go to site for newsy gossip. I especially love the live tweeting of events. The other day when DL froze up just as the Kavanaugh hearing was about to start, I panicked!

by Anonymousreply 31October 1, 2018 1:52 AM

Via gossip site crazy days and crazy nights dot net, four years ago

by Anonymousreply 32October 1, 2018 2:25 AM

Was up late on a sleepless night, roaming the internet and google turned up a DL thread about Melissa Sue Anderson and Little House on the Prairie that was just absurd—so funny. That was Summer 2011 or 2012 and I’m back daily ever since.

by Anonymousreply 33October 1, 2018 9:09 AM

We had to send telegrams to post.

by Anonymousreply 34October 1, 2018 9:13 AM

2013. I think I googled "_______ gay" or "_______ shirtless."

by Anonymousreply 35October 1, 2018 9:57 AM

Early summer of 2001, I googled for vintage Hollywood gossip and classic Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 36October 1, 2018 10:24 AM

1997

I think I was searching for something that was covered in one of the non-gossip forums at the time. Can't remember what exactly though, may have been health-related.

by Anonymousreply 37October 1, 2018 10:34 AM

2002 - a link on either alt.showbiz.gossip or alt.gossip.celebrities

by Anonymousreply 38October 1, 2018 10:40 AM

Googled "underappreciated, hidden gems films". DL was the second link. The sofa's comfy, the nibbles aren't too stale, the beer's more or less cold. My kinda dump.

by Anonymousreply 39October 1, 2018 11:10 AM

About a year ago I googled the name of Armond Rizzo. I was directed to this site and started to read the snarky posts about this famous bottom. Some of the comments were so outrageous that I knew this was the place I needed to be for a few laughs. I also enjoy the Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper ones - the snarkier the better.

by Anonymousreply 40October 1, 2018 2:51 PM

15 years know but don’t ask me how I came here. I don’t know it anymore . Was it Google or reddit or something else ?

by Anonymousreply 41October 1, 2018 8:10 PM

I don't remember the exact year, it was around 2012. I Googled "Nancy McKeon gay."

by Anonymousreply 42October 1, 2018 8:13 PM

1999

by Anonymousreply 43October 1, 2018 8:14 PM

During Katrina. A co-worker was following the Butter Bean Katrina thread.

I found a place that discussed film ,TV and theater without 15 year olds present. What a gift. The bitchiness and snark and gossip!!!! Heaven.

I had been on Table Talk as well.

by Anonymousreply 44October 1, 2018 8:25 PM

r33, was it the original ShitBra Mime Rape thread or a sequel?

by Anonymousreply 45October 3, 2018 3:02 PM

2006, someone on another board mentioned a DL soap rumor, and so I googled the DL. Even then people complained it wasn't as good as it used to be, but we have it good (when frauen and Russians aren't invading).

by Anonymousreply 46October 3, 2018 3:05 PM

Originally found it via some gossip site which mentioned it was the "new" alt.gossip.celebrity / alt.showbiz.gossip. Didn't stick around, but in about 2004 found it again because a Miyoshi Umeki fan page linked to a DL thread about her. Said something like "if you ignore the mental patients the rest of the thread is useful."

by Anonymousreply 47October 3, 2018 3:05 PM

When the Prancing Ponies showed up I left for a while. I was embarrassed because i knew some of them were surely people I knew from LiveJournal and other fandom websites. They still mention DL on Fail Fandom Anon sometimes and I cringe.

by Anonymousreply 48October 3, 2018 3:07 PM

I found it in 2016 after googling “why does Hillary seem like such a cunt?”

This site was the first hit.

by Anonymousreply 49October 3, 2018 3:08 PM

I think so, r15 -- I don't remember if it was a new thread in 2004 or 2005, but I do know it was still active around that time.

by Anonymousreply 50October 3, 2018 3:09 PM

LATE 1990S , LOOKING FOR GOSSIP ON BETTE DAVIS OR SOME OTHER DIVA.

by Anonymousreply 51October 3, 2018 3:15 PM

1998, and I don't remember the exact link. I think it was in reference to the same-sex marriage court case and amendment that was working its way through Hawaii at the time. Came for the politics; stayed for the gossip and bitching.

by Anonymousreply 52October 3, 2018 3:22 PM

1/96. Can't remember how I found the DL.

by Anonymousreply 54October 3, 2018 3:30 PM

I Googled my name on my 35th birthday and found many references about me. I’ve been here about a month now and love it.

by Anonymousreply 55October 3, 2018 3:32 PM

Do you think David E ever figured out why straight me are so stupid?

by Anonymousreply 56October 3, 2018 3:33 PM

A random Twitter link led me here early this year or in late 2017. I don’t recall the subject of the thread — something political, most likely. I also don’t recall whether it turned up in my Twitter feed randomly or was in the results of a specific search.

Loved what I found then, and I check in just about every day now. I still wonder how it escaped my attention for so long. As I read through threads I can practically hear the cackling, bitchy, and knowing voices of many of my friends, past & present.

by Anonymousreply 57October 3, 2018 3:42 PM

Nice to know there are still so many old timers here.

by Anonymousreply 58October 3, 2018 3:48 PM

I found you lovelies in 2012 but only recall I was web surfing..likely googled something. I’m a frauline but bi and enjoy the forum mostly...😀

by Anonymousreply 59October 3, 2018 3:51 PM

1998. Can’t remember how I got here for the life of me.

But it was the time of Iowa’sLoddie, Chris from Ford, David Ehrenstein, Josh, PerWee Poundstine, Blue Agave, White Belt Man, Touched By An Uncle, Magdalene and so many others.

by Anonymousreply 60October 3, 2018 4:01 PM

Around 2009. I have a lot of unpopular opinions and the things I was Googling kept coming up with results from DL - so I decided to stay here since there were so many like-minded bitches posting here. I can't remember exactly what it was though.

by Anonymousreply 61October 3, 2018 4:33 PM

Aretha Franklin's funeral! I couldn't sit through 7 hours without knowing who the hell I was looking at I would land here once a year maybe,...., but never really got it ...... ...no more!! ]

by Anonymousreply 62October 3, 2018 4:39 PM

Might have been Gawker but it was a fleeting reference to the bad boys over the gossip site Datalounge. I was not here for the 9/11 thread but was here before the publication and marketing campaign for I am Not Myself These Days. The site was heavily authenticated then and they ruled the roost and you dared not contradict them. Actually Josh was one of the better ones. LeeAnne DeVette I stood in awe and terror of. That poster could blister skin. The rest were blowhards. Kicker, who never gave up, Mrs. Slocombe, who never shut up. The rest, it would probably pain them to know, I’ve forgotten. It was a good and rip roaring site then. The jackasses were part of the charm in a way. I dropped off during the Obama and Clinton campaigns. DL gets unhinged even for DL during certain elections.

by Anonymousreply 63October 3, 2018 4:51 PM

I Googled Trivago Guy sometime around 2013 or 2014 and this was the only website talking about him.

by Anonymousreply 64October 3, 2018 4:51 PM

WHET Umpy?

by Anonymousreply 66October 3, 2018 4:54 PM

I, for one, enjoyed Josh but many found him annoying and overbearing. I also liked the “retarded jsoh/“ offshoot of Josh.

by Anonymousreply 67October 3, 2018 4:55 PM

[quote] WHET Umpy?

After he lost the “U” he descended into madness and ended up dead in his own home. His cadaver was only discovered months later, his roommate long having departed. His cat ate his remains and survives to this day.

by Anonymousreply 68October 3, 2018 4:57 PM

I've been here since late November 2015. I found the DL after looking up gossip about the Michael Pitt/JGL affair and have been a regular visitor ever since. The first big thread I remember reading here was Smoking hot pastor's wife killed after "failed robbery".

by Anonymousreply 69October 3, 2018 5:41 PM

2011. I read the Findadeath articles on Amedure and Cunanen and when I searched for more it brought me here. It was the old format. I stuck around to find out if Bea and Rue really hated Betty, then I forgot about DL. Two years ago I quit Facebook, then when George Michael died I was in such a state to find out WTF happened. I thought OMG I bet those bitches on DL know EVERYTHING. While that turned out to be farther from the truth than I expected due to insane Lovely invasion, I stuck around for news & gossip and in a way DL replaced my facebooking.

by Anonymousreply 70October 3, 2018 5:47 PM

I came here in 2006 after googling a certain gay actor.

by Anonymousreply 71October 3, 2018 7:19 PM

Summer 2001. This was after Michelangelo Signorile reported on Andrew Sullivan's infamous "milky loads" personal ad soliciting bareback sex. Somehow DL was implicated, I forget how exactly, but it's what first brought it to my attention and I checked it out.

I was 28 then and now am 45. Kind of unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 72October 3, 2018 7:28 PM

1995 and it was mentioned on a now defunct website.

by Anonymousreply 73October 3, 2018 7:53 PM

I Googled something about 10 years ago and ended up down this rabbit hole...where people were talking about Bonnie Franklin and Janet Jackson and Melissa Sue Anderson. It was so strange.

by Anonymousreply 74October 3, 2018 7:58 PM

I stumbled upon it by accident in 2002. I stumbled upon David Ehrenstein at the same time and stayed for his Friday night meltdowns.

by Anonymousreply 75October 3, 2018 8:00 PM

About a year.

There was a thread about me on it, ripping me to shreds (found via Google).

Despite the insults, I thought everyone on here was really funny, and stuck around.

by Anonymousreply 76October 3, 2018 8:03 PM

I stumbled on DL's Legacy site about eight years ago. I could have been looking for info on whether Bette Davis shoving Arthur Farnsworth resulted, technically, in an act of manslaughter. Or was it a Saturday Night Fever appreciation thread. Maybe gossip on Aaron Cockgobbler Schock. Or a takedown of that bitchy Lee Radziwell. I can't recall. I love you people. Some of the funniest, sharpest cunts I have ever had the pleasure of wasting time with.

by Anonymousreply 77October 3, 2018 8:11 PM

Since 9/11/2001

by Anonymousreply 78October 3, 2018 8:18 PM

Lurked since 2007, but a vulgar post about my anatomy compelled me to set the record straight.

by Anonymousreply 79October 3, 2018 8:20 PM

Sometime around the turn of the century, via one of the aforementioned usenet gossip newsgroups.

by Anonymousreply 80October 3, 2018 8:29 PM

I found this place around 2002. Can't remember how, probably searching for "celebrity gossip" or some such. Have been here ever since. God knows how many hours of my life I've spent in this place.

by Anonymousreply 81October 3, 2018 8:38 PM

1998 or 1999, I don't remember exactly. I looked up something on Chris Meloni and Lee Tergesen from "OZ" and ended up here... Have been on DL ever since.

by Anonymousreply 82October 3, 2018 8:51 PM

I’m the cliche. Home from work, sick as a dog in 2010 and decided to watch a Golden Girls marathon. I’d never watched an episode at that point. As I watched it I realised there were A LOT of inconsistencies, so I googled Golden girls, inconsistencies. And voila DL jumped right up. I was abused almost immediately by some DLer who thought my question was stupid, but it was funny, made me laugh and I’ve been here, on and off, ever since.

by Anonymousreply 84October 3, 2018 8:55 PM

Are you someone famous, r79?

by Anonymousreply 85October 3, 2018 9:26 PM

The DL rite of passage. My very first post here was greeted with the retort : 'Try hard much, bitch?' It was quite the vicious slap in the face,

by Anonymousreply 87October 3, 2018 9:39 PM

Yeah, on a first visit it feels like a slap in the face... eventually it becomes humorous or you learn to tune it out. This place has its own language/vibe and becomes fun once you get used to it.

by Anonymousreply 88October 3, 2018 9:52 PM

First came here around 2003 because of the LOTT/Prancing Pony shit.. Didn't become a regular til a few years later.

by Anonymousreply 89October 3, 2018 9:55 PM

Googled "Bill Hemmer gay" - now I can't even imagine why I'd care if he was!

by Anonymousreply 90October 3, 2018 10:01 PM

Another 2014 member here. Did a search for gay celeb gossip and found my forever home.

by Anonymousreply 91October 3, 2018 10:07 PM

1998- Was mentioned in the defunct SOMA.org website. Checked it out, chuckled, and have been checking it out every so often ever since.

Yes, not all of us have dementia.

by Anonymousreply 95October 3, 2018 10:53 PM

Around 2002. A lesbian friend who came for the Kathy Griffin gossip told me about it.

by Anonymousreply 96October 3, 2018 11:02 PM

Since 2000. I used one of those old-fashioned search engines-- something with the word "dog" in it, I think?-- searched "celebrity gossip" and wound up here. The first thing I saw was a fabulous classic film thread, so I knew I'd be back, but I had no idea how important it would become in my life.

by Anonymousreply 97October 3, 2018 11:13 PM

There was, R54. On geocities if I recall.

by Anonymousreply 100October 3, 2018 11:18 PM

Google searches for the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy brought me here. 2003, I think

by Anonymousreply 101October 3, 2018 11:19 PM

I remember getting yelled at for still using Netscape Navigator as my browser.

by Anonymousreply 102October 3, 2018 11:21 PM

It was a great browser R102 and I was loathe to give it up myself.

by Anonymousreply 103October 3, 2018 11:22 PM

Hollywood closet cases, EARLY 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 104October 3, 2018 11:25 PM

I've been here around six or seven years. I had greatly enjoyed the celebrity snark on a site called The A List. (I'm still chuckling at their description of Merv Griffin as "gayer than an Ungaro spring frock.") Then the A List disappeared. I was Googling around hoping to find a gay gossip site that that would be just as witty and just as much fun to read. A link to DataLounge popped up, and I've been a fan ever since.

by Anonymousreply 105October 3, 2018 11:28 PM

One of the first threads I read was something like "I Just Effed The Dog Walker", and the poster continued to regale us in his adventure of ogling the neighborhood dog walker, his "preparation", and then going outside to make his fantasy lover become a reality. The responses on that thread were a bunch of Mary!s telling him how irresponsible and gross the storyteller was. I was surprised that it seemed there were so many prudes here.

by Anonymousreply 112October 4, 2018 3:01 PM

She certainly never did. Not sure she ever even looked for it.

Why should r111 be held responsible?

I was a fan of Ana Marie Cox back when she started her website Wonkette, and she mentioned Datalounge in (I think) 2005. I checked it out and have been here ever since.

by Anonymousreply 115October 4, 2018 3:13 PM

I remember reaching it off and on through the years but not knowing what to make of it.

Then, about 5 years ago I got hooked on some thread and have been here ever since

by Anonymousreply 116October 4, 2018 4:13 PM

After pulling my face out of his butt crack, I noticed my trick had the DataLounge URL tattooed on his right ass cheek. Curious, and while he was still passed out, I wrote the web address on the back of a matchbook cover (the Detroit Eagle, in case that information is relevant.) I didn't have a computer at the time, so later in the day, at another trick's apartment, I used his laptop to look up the site while he was in the shitter staring at himself in the mirror (he'd done a lot of mushrooms that day and was pretty useless in the sack.) This was on 9/11, so it's been 17 years.

by Anonymousreply 117October 4, 2018 4:29 PM

Thinking it was around 1997. On a dial-up modem from work (my own business).

Saw DL linked on an author website/blog - been a regular visitor ever since.

The author was Sparkle Hayter - who wrote some really funny mystery novels - but I think she eventually ended up in screenwriting or something as they never really took off enough to make a decent income - and a girl has to make a living! I wonder if she still comes here....? (If so - hi Sparkle!)

Remember when cool links were so important to a website or blog?

While part of me is appalled at how much time I would have spent here over the years - I’m much more profoundly grateful to have found my people. It was social media for me before all of that - or the term! - existed. DL has not only always been good for a laugh - but has been a great aggregator of news - and comfort! - during so many big events since - 9/11, various crises and significant global events.

And friends always were (and still are) astounded that I was always so ahead of the curve when it came to gossip about celebs or whoever. Someone’s name would come up in a conversation or discusssion and I’d be all ‘oh puh-lease...’ and give the latest DL pronouncemts on the topic - which almost always turned out to be right (even though that was sometimes in the very long run!)

Dataloungers can spot a lack of authenticity better than anyone. I’m sure someone could do a study and get a doctorate out of it...

So yeah - always grateful that this place exists. You guys are the best!

Speaking of authenticity, there have been some obvious liars in this thread. Yeah, I'm looking at you, WebFraus.

Since August of 2003 like OP. A friend told me about it. I think I was here at least once in 2000 though. Someone linked a screenshot of the DL home page from that time several years ago that featured a rainbow-ish silhouette of a woman, possibly a representation of a the site mascot.

A friend. A friend.

Since around 2005 when there was a long thread about the Most Hated People Working Backstage on Broadway and my name was mentioned as being one of the Nicest. How could I resist?

My bf (now hubby) was already here; he came through an old defunct agy gossip site called something like Is He/She Gay?

during Aretha Franklin's funeral...I wanted to know who the hell everybody was..

Sometime around 2004 and the prancing ponies.

Early 1999. I was reading a Kevin Spacey fan forum (I KNOW) and there was a link to here. Been here ever since.

by Anonymousreply 130January 24, 2019 4:06 PM

You still come here for Kevin spacey fandom stuff?

by Anonymousreply 131January 24, 2019 4:08 PM

Lol r131, no I stay for the wit and wisdom. The Kevin Spacey fan forum thing was a very brief period. But I hand it to the DL denizens, they knew the scoop on Spacey 20 years ago.

Around 2004. I found it after somebody wrote on the BroadwayWorld.com message boards how mean and unkind you all were.

And forever are. Don't ever change, DL.

About five years ago and I am a daily user, I mean visitor.

Through a random google search of some sort.

I live in NYC and Iv'e yet to meet a kindered DL spirit. They're always "No, never heard of it."

by Anonymousreply 134January 24, 2019 7:00 PM

I can't quit you!

by Anonymousreply 135November 17, 2019 7:06 PM

In 2001 (I think), while reading forum messages at Badpuppy, I saw a thread about the Andrew Sullivan "milky loads" business. Inside that thread, there was a link to a DL thread on the topic. I clicked that link and have been here ever since.

Night charm here. Same year, same story

by Anonymousreply 137November 18, 2019 12:16 AM

The A-list gossip website was down so I googled "Christina Aguilera hygienically challenged" and came here and never looked back.

I think it was probably 2005
