Oscar Season 2018 Part 2

Glenn or Gaga?

Neither. Olivia Colman.

by Anonymousreply 2September 19, 2018 10:06 PM

I’m still confident they’ll knock Colman down to Supporting. From what I hear, she’s not unquestionably the lead, and she’s a middle-aged character actress and not a legend or a starlet, the two types that normally win Lead Actress.

If a studio could convince Viola to take the demotion to guarantee the win, I’m sure Colman will play along, too.

by Anonymousreply 3September 20, 2018 1:19 AM

Bitches, I’m going to a special screening of A Star Is Born next Thursdsy. Jealous? I know you are.

by Anonymousreply 4September 20, 2018 1:43 AM

I've already seen it re.

by Anonymousreply 5September 20, 2018 1:57 AM

Oops I meant r5

by Anonymousreply 6September 20, 2018 1:58 AM

A person named Lady Gaga (WTF?) should not win an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 7September 20, 2018 4:10 AM

Why wouldn't she have used her real name if she wanted to be a serious actress? Everyone would still know who she is.

by Anonymousreply 8September 20, 2018 5:44 AM

R8 Great question.

by Anonymousreply 9September 20, 2018 6:04 AM

It'd be great if Cher had a presenting role at this year's Oscars. MM2 has her acting career back in the spotlight.

by Anonymousreply 10September 20, 2018 6:38 AM

Gaga

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 11September 20, 2018 6:40 AM

R9, Cher's real name is Cherilyn. Not exactly the difference between Lady Gaga and Stefani Germanotta?

by Anonymousreply 12September 20, 2018 6:52 AM

Will there be any tributes for Meryl to receive / award or will she stay at home?

by Anonymousreply 13September 20, 2018 7:20 AM

Every second Gaga is on the screen it's Oscar worthy. Glenn's performance is measured and somewhat static. Glenn is too old and not liked enough in the industry to merit a pity Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 14September 20, 2018 8:43 AM

R13 I'll be there. I expect the Academy to nominate me for Mary Poppins and I expect to win. It will be G that will be staying home.

by Anonymousreply 15September 20, 2018 9:07 AM

I don't think anyone's bothering to put Streep forward.

by Anonymousreply 16September 20, 2018 9:14 AM

[quote]Glenn is too old and not liked enough in the industry to merit a pity Oscar.

Ouch. Too pitiful for a pity Oscar. That's gotta hurt.

by Anonymousreply 17September 20, 2018 9:15 AM

#OscarsSoGlennphobic

by Anonymousreply 18September 20, 2018 9:17 AM

Deborah Kerr, Glenn and Thelma Ritter all nominated 6 times and only Kerr lead all times and also won honorary .

by Anonymousreply 19September 20, 2018 10:00 AM

Lady Gaga winning the Oscar will help the industry. Glenn.....not so much.

by Anonymousreply 20September 20, 2018 10:24 AM

The Oscars telecast barely helps the network ratings. They don't mean shit for the industry.

by Anonymousreply 21September 20, 2018 3:39 PM

I liked Glenn's outfit from the last time she was nominated.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 22September 20, 2018 4:09 PM

She smiles the way kids with braces do at r22.

by Anonymousreply 23September 20, 2018 4:11 PM

When does Glenn's Sunset Blvd. come out? There could always be another chance to reward her if it goes to Lady Gaga this year.

by Anonymousreply 24September 20, 2018 4:19 PM

The Twelfth of Never, R24.

by Anonymousreply 25September 20, 2018 6:08 PM

R22 she doesn't have the bosoms for that dress

by Anonymousreply 26September 20, 2018 7:23 PM

If she needs help deciding on what to wear I'll play Blanche and Rose to her Dorothy.

by Anonymousreply 27September 21, 2018 12:46 PM

Sorry forgot to sign M at R27!

by Anonymousreply 28September 21, 2018 12:48 PM

Bradley Cooper is the current frontrunner. He could also be up for a total of FIVE Oscars that night (acting, directing, producing, original song, adapted screenplay).

by Anonymousreply 29September 21, 2018 2:02 PM

Lady Gaga could never beat two screen legends Glenn Close or Julia Roberts. No way Glenn won't get a first or Julia get a second before the Academy would give one to Gaga.

by Anonymousreply 30September 22, 2018 4:34 AM

Is Julia Roberts 'a screen legend?'

by Anonymousreply 31September 22, 2018 5:57 AM

I wonder if Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer will be getting noms for all eternity since they happened to be the to go-tos right around the time #OSW happened. Spencer definitely doesn't have the career to explain them. She couldn't even get that 'Murder, She Wrote' reboot off the ground.

by Anonymousreply 32September 22, 2018 6:02 AM

....

by Anonymousreply 33September 22, 2018 6:04 AM

Julia Roberts being a screen legend would, by extension, mean Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are screen legends.

That might be a touch generous.

by Anonymousreply 34September 22, 2018 6:14 AM

Um Roberts is widely considered more legendary than Kidman and Bullock. They have their careers because Julia paved a path for them and didn't have to marry a closeted midget. Sandra has always gladly taken every scrap that Julia turned down. Yes she's a screen legend. Because no woman in 50 years has ever dominated Hollywood for a period of time like her. Come up with another.

by Anonymousreply 35September 22, 2018 6:23 AM

No, I'd say by this point they're all roughly equal...

by Anonymousreply 36September 22, 2018 6:25 AM

Bullock who I like and Kidman have never opened multiple films on their name alone alone like Roberts. For a decade. Julia had her name above the title for a decade. That is different.

by Anonymousreply 37September 22, 2018 6:29 AM

Wait, forgive my ignorance, but what is Olivia Colman in that is Oscar-worthy this year? Did I miss something?

by Anonymousreply 38September 22, 2018 6:32 AM

No dog in this fight but Julia Roberts is called a movie legend in a lot of publications.

by Anonymousreply 39September 22, 2018 6:33 AM

[quoteNo dog in this fight but Julia Roberts is called a movie legend in a lot of publications.

Justifiably?

I'd reserve that term for someone like Bette Davis or Joan Crawford myself...

And if the definition is 'name above the title in the '90s' then you have to add Meg Ryan and Demi Moore to that list.

by Anonymousreply 40September 22, 2018 6:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 41September 22, 2018 6:40 AM

Meryl is the only actress working today who could be called a screen legend.

by Anonymousreply 42September 22, 2018 6:44 AM

R41 show us proof of ONE poster with their name alone Above a title.

by Anonymousreply 43September 22, 2018 6:44 AM

Meryl is of course. Which is why when they worked together one headline said the world's best actress and the world's favorite actress

by Anonymousreply 44September 22, 2018 6:51 AM

Bradley Cooper IS NOT going to get five Oscar nominations, R29. The first problem being that he is ridiculous in this role. It's the first time I've seen a male actor seem like he's doing an impersonation of a man for a role.

R42, Streep is so over-rated that it's embarrassing. She may have been better in the silent film days where all that overacting and dramatic emoting would have come in handy. Just watch her laughs alone in any movie she's made to see how bad it is.

by Anonymousreply 45September 22, 2018 6:53 AM

What was that for, R44? A:OC? That was in 2013 by which point calling Julia Roberts, whose career had peaked like fifteen years ago, 'the world's favourite actress' would've been a stretch.

Her PR must be working overtime.

by Anonymousreply 46September 22, 2018 6:54 AM

[quote]Streep is so over-rated that it's embarrassing. She may have been better in the silent film days where all that overacting and dramatic emoting would have come in handy. Just watch her laughs alone in any movie she's made to see how bad it is.

I wasn't commenting on her performances, just her stature. She's a screen legend, probably one of the few people who can be called such still working today.

by Anonymousreply 47September 22, 2018 6:55 AM

R46 what modern actress has been more beloved that you remember?

by Anonymousreply 48September 22, 2018 6:56 AM

[quote]Will there be any tributes for Meryl to receive / award or will she stay at home?

With any luck, she'll be included in the 'In Memorium' segment.

by Anonymousreply 49September 22, 2018 7:00 AM

Can we focus on me? I'm young and hot.

by Anonymousreply 50September 22, 2018 7:00 AM

I don't remember her being particularly 'beloved'. She was a big box office star in the '90s, yes, but no more so than Meg Ryan.

by Anonymousreply 51September 22, 2018 7:01 AM

[quote]With any luck, she'll be included in the 'In Memorium' segment.

More chance of your career being there, dear.

by Anonymousreply 52September 22, 2018 7:03 AM

I hope that if Streep and Close are both at the Oscars that they sit next to each other just so DL goes nuts.

by Anonymousreply 53September 22, 2018 7:06 AM

R51 she was very much beloved. Meg Ryan wasn't in her stratosphere. Check her box office vs Ryan. And check the level of respect from Hollywood. When did Meg Ryan EVER have her name alone above any title??? Much less have the world at her feet.

by Anonymousreply 54September 22, 2018 7:08 AM

Some DLers don't understand that what we like is not necessarily what what the general public likes. Most fraus and general public love Julia Roberts. We don't but there's nothing to do about it. Let's make sure to push for Olivis Colman who is delicious in The Favorite.

by Anonymousreply 55September 22, 2018 7:14 AM

Are you her publicist, R54?

[quote]Some DLers don't understand that what we like is not necessarily what what the general public likes. Most fraus and general public love Julia Roberts.

True.

But it's 2018, not 1998. The idea that AMPAS is waiting to give her a second win is just crazy.

by Anonymousreply 56September 22, 2018 7:17 AM

Natalie Portman's Von Lux is getting a Dec. 7 release.

by Anonymousreply 57September 22, 2018 7:21 AM

R56. I get you. But I don't think they wouldn't. This not the role probably but I think she'll be nominated. I see her second Oscar being a supporting one just as a show of respect.

by Anonymousreply 58September 22, 2018 7:22 AM

She has connections. She could get a nom, though she doesn't deserve it.

by Anonymousreply 59September 22, 2018 7:22 AM

R59 have you seen the movie? Or are you just saying that cause she's a movie star? I don't care either way cause she doesn't seem a threat to win. I think the Academy would love for her to be nominated though.

by Anonymousreply 60September 22, 2018 7:26 AM

Glenn Close.

And fuck you, R45. Meryl's laughs are so great because they're genuine. She slways makes me laugh.

One of my last favorite on screen laughs from her is in Ricki and the Flash (the film was dreadful and her performance was underwhelming, though).

Kevin Kline seems to be improvising a line when he yells out to Mamie Gummer, "Don't kill your son there..." and makes the strangest face to a response which can barely be heard off screen (Mamie ad-libbing back?). Meryl's reaction and subsequent laugh is so fucking genuine and funny.

Probably the best thing about the film.

She's admitted always being nervous when filming and finding it hard to keep herself from laughing during non emotional scenes.

by Anonymousreply 61September 22, 2018 7:30 AM

"Don't kill yourself in there..."

by Anonymousreply 62September 22, 2018 7:31 AM

Here's an interesting marker: Bullock starred in OCEAN'S 8 this year; Roberts starred in OCEAN'S 11 in 2001. If Roberts had done OCEAN'S 8 this year she would've been billed •after• Bullock. But, most likely, above Blanchett.

As for her winning another Oscar: Could she? I'd say yes. They did give Hilary Swank and Jessica Lange second ones -- albeit both of those did have a faint whiff of desperation and lack of alternative. So maybe she could find herself in Supporting in a year when there was nothing else around like those two. But I hardly think there's a great desire to make her a two-time winner. And, yes, I could see them giving one to Gaga before giving Roberts a second one. Not that she'd deserve it, but would Roberts either?

by Anonymousreply 63September 22, 2018 7:46 AM

How many actresses alive today would you bestow the title of Screen Legend to?

Streep's a certainty, but who else?

by Anonymousreply 64September 22, 2018 7:48 AM

R63 Fuck you.

R63 on no planet would Julia Roberts EVER accept a second billing to Sandra Bullock And trust that I'm sure she was approached. And probably offered top billing. She will get a second Oscar at some point.

by Anonymousreply 69September 22, 2018 8:00 AM

Roberts is a film actress. She will most definitely have two before she dies and before Lady Gaga is ever offered one.

by Anonymousreply 70September 22, 2018 8:04 AM

My money is on Glen.

by Anonymousreply 71September 22, 2018 8:05 AM

Sandra Bullock seems like a nice person. I doubt she would ever demand top billing over Julia Roberts. If only to avoid drama.

by Anonymousreply 72September 22, 2018 8:12 AM

What’ll be first: M’s fourth and fifth or Julia’s second?

by Anonymousreply 73September 22, 2018 8:12 AM

[quote]Wait, forgive my ignorance, but what is Olivia Colman in that is Oscar-worthy this year? Did I miss something?

Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favorite with Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. Lots of raves out of Venice.

by Anonymousreply 74September 22, 2018 8:14 AM

Julia will get a second before. All the great ones get their second

by Anonymousreply 75September 22, 2018 8:15 AM

R68 As a whole, I was underwhelmed by her in A:OC (that hallucinatory dance was terrible), but she had some great stand alone scenes.

I particularly love her during the dinner scene ("Blow it out your ass!" and another wonderfully genuine laugh during "Where's the MEAT! Where's the meat, where's the meat! :infectious laughter:").

Meryl, like Lange (Hush) is always fun to watch even when they're terrible, lol.

The mark of a true legend.

by Anonymousreply 76September 22, 2018 8:15 AM

Also, the boot scene. So good.

by Anonymousreply 77September 22, 2018 8:16 AM

I liked the boot scene too. But I liked Julianne and Julia's reactions to it more. They seemed to be understanding. Like getting something they didn't understand before.

by Anonymousreply 78September 22, 2018 8:20 AM

R78 Agreed!

Julia was amazing when she snaps. I've never seen her channel such palpable fury like that before or since.

Meryl's delivery during that scene was also exquisite.

To paraphrase:

"These are my best fuhkin' friends. You try takin' these pills away from me and I'll eatcha ALIVE."

Belisimo.. :kisses fingers:

by Anonymousreply 79September 22, 2018 8:25 AM

Eat your fucking fish, Glenn!

by Anonymousreply 82September 22, 2018 8:34 AM

My main memory is how M stayed in character even when we weren’t shooting together. At least she did look old enough to play my mother.

G and J(ulia) — Girls, girls — you’re BOTH desperate hasbeens.

by Anonymousreply 84September 22, 2018 8:36 AM

R83 lol. Lange would've been AMAZING as Violet in A:OC. She basically played her in AHS season 1.

Also, when asked who his first choice for Violet was, Tracey Letts said Lange was.

R8 R9 Lady Gaga wanted to use her real name for this movie, but was pressured by the studio to release under her stage name for advertising purposes. Queen Latifah has fought this before with the studios. Dana Owens is not a box office draw, but Queen Latifah is. It took Dwayne Johnson hundreds and hundreds of millions of movie goers money before studios would let him drop The Rock

Loved you in Pretty Woman, J! Did you ever imagine one day Sandra Bullock would steal your career?

by Anonymousreply 117September 22, 2018 4:28 PM

Julia will really need to pull out all the stops to get a second Oscar. That first win had A LOT to do with awarding her bankability and star status at the time more than it had to do with rewarding her performance.

It was the same with Sandra's win, but the competitive performances weren't as high quality as they were in 2000.

A second win for either would mean building up a steady stream of truly respectable work over the next decade or two.

by Anonymousreply 118September 22, 2018 4:28 PM

If Blue Jasmine hadn't come out in 2013, Sandra probably would have taken her second Oscar. It was a much better performance than the one she won for.

by Anonymousreply 119September 22, 2018 4:31 PM

True, R119.

Beyond that the only way I could ever see either of them winning again would be one of those retrospective WTF wins in a very bad year.

by Anonymousreply 120September 22, 2018 4:32 PM

[quote] If Blue Jasmine hadn't come out in 2013, Sandra probably would have taken her second Oscar. It was a much better performance than the one she won for.

Would they make Sandra Bullock a two-time winner so soon after her first win? And for something like GRAVITY after THE BLIND SIDE? I don't think so. It's hard to say who that year would've gone to without Blanchett. Maybe Streep...

by Anonymousreply 121September 22, 2018 4:35 PM

Without Blanchett I would've gone Lead for A:OC and stormed the category. They're waiting with bated breath to give me my second win.

by Anonymousreply 122September 22, 2018 4:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 124September 22, 2018 4:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 125September 22, 2018 5:04 PM

Come up with another.

Happily. Streisand, 10 appearances in the annual Top Ten Box Office Stars list (during years where she was almost always the ONLY female on those lists) and a 30+ year film career which could have gone longer but she's too much of a pain in the ass perfectionist to work more than she does. Bullock is well on her way to catching up w/ Roberts and will likely land in the list this year.

Kidman came on the scene around the same time as Roberts. They both had their first breakout roles in 1989, Kidman w/ Dead Calm and Roberts w/ Steel Magnolias. Both had been working prior to that but to little acclaim.

Also- When was the last time Roberts had a hit, let alone two hits with her name over the title that did $200m+ at the box office in the past 10 years? As a matter of fact, when was the last time Roberts had a film hit $100m in which she starred? (She did not star in the Oceans films, she was "the girl.") It was Erin Brockovich in 2000. Wonder grossed $100m, but it was frau central and any actress could have played the mother.

And I actually like Julia Roberts and thought she was amazing in Brockovich and deserved her Oscar (weak year or not). But facts are facts.

by Anonymousreply 128September 22, 2018 6:54 PM

[quote] As a whole, I was underwhelmed by her in A:OC (that hallucinatory dance was terrible), but she had some great stand alone scenes.

I disagree. I was bored silly by the movie and didn't think anyone was very good in it, but the one scene that woke me up was Meryl putting on the record and dancing while totally blotto. It was the one real moment of the film. My dad was a drunk and I'd seen him do exactly what Streep did in that scene. She had the movements, the stupor, the complete lack of self consciousness, all down perfectly. It actually chilled me. I felt like I was watching my dad inhabit someone else's body for a moment.

by Anonymousreply 129September 22, 2018 6:58 PM

No one can play drunk like Mother Streep.

I’m not sure the hype of A Star Is Born is going to transfer overseas. I went and saw A Simple Favour yesterday evening (Sat.) in London - a very date night crowd of young couples. The A Star Is Born trailer played to indifference and once it ended there was a distinct wave of giggling. (Probably at its pomposity.) Not people talking like “oh, want to see that” but more like “yeah right.” Probably has something to do with the country music background which isn’t very popular here.

I always think the part in the trailer when he drags her up on stage and she resists seems very phoney. I hope it plays better in the film.

by Anonymousreply 134September 23, 2018 1:12 PM

A lot of winning Oscar bait doesn't translate overseas. Prime example being any film about slavery or Jim Crow. No one in Europe cares. And China? No. But always an easy topic for getting some Oscar notice.

by Anonymousreply 135September 23, 2018 1:52 PM

If Cher could win there's no reason why Gaga couldn't... necessarily.

I still think they'll ultimately give it to Glenn, though that might change. One thing's for sure: Gaga's going to run a shameless campaign, something I can't see Glenn doing.

by Anonymousreply 136September 23, 2018 4:07 PM

[quote]If Cher could win there's no reason why Gaga couldn't

Cher had built up a small body of respectable work before she won her Oscar. All LG has is a stupid name and a silly performance on one season of AHS.

by Anonymousreply 137September 23, 2018 8:37 PM

^Your opinion. She won plaudits and a Golden Globe for that “silly performance.”

A Golden Globe r139. Exactly the point.

by Anonymousreply 139September 23, 2018 11:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 142September 24, 2018 12:15 AM

If anyone thinks people went to see Gravity or The Bline Side for Sandra Bullock is full of shit. Football and special effects were the stars of those movies. Before Trump hijacked America's favorite sport. Sandra had barely had a hit for a decade before Disney sold her Lifetime movie. She's horrid in it by the way. A knock off performance of Erin Brockovich without the cursing. Whist is why the person Disney really wanted for the part turned it down.

by Anonymousreply 143September 24, 2018 4:14 AM

Sandra and Julia will never work together because I don't believe Julia would ever allow herself to be seen as equal or less than Bullock. Sandy is not bitchy and would probably be open to the idea.

by Anonymousreply 146September 24, 2018 4:30 AM

No, I don't think it's real. The lighting's off. Also, there are a lot of photoshopped pictures of the two of them together, which makes me think that the desire for them to work together is definitely there.

Sandra and Julia have worked with many of the same people before, from directors to actors, but have never been in a film together. Never even a public photo op. Why? Ego? Budgetary issues? It would surely be a blockbuster if they ever did.

by Anonymousreply 165September 24, 2018 6:29 PM

Thank you R155. I was just gonna say that The Proposal was a blockbuster before The Blind Side even came out.

by Anonymousreply 166September 24, 2018 6:30 PM

The Proposal and The Blind Side were scripted with Julia Roberts in mind. She was the original and the only choice for those. But she rejected them despite valiant efforts to convince her by the makers. Sandra Bullock grabbed them. Julia made Sandra Bullock what she is today.

by Anonymousreply 167September 24, 2018 7:01 PM

I’d say Sandra made herself who she is today by seizing those opportunities/Julia’s castoffs. Besides, Julia is an known asshole with a bad rep while Sandra is pretty damned beloved by anyone that’s worked with her.

by Anonymousreply 168September 24, 2018 7:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 180September 25, 2018 12:18 AM

by Anonymousreply 206September 25, 2018 11:18 AM

Sandra would have been fabulous in Postcards from the Edge if they’d waited some more to do it. I never believed Meryl Streep as a California girl.

Really, R207, are you suggesting that Halle Berry,Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Winslet (in the godawful The Reader), Sandra Bullock and Natalie Portman (I'll give you Helen Mirren and even Marion Cotillard) were a better group of winners than Kathy Bates, Jodie Foster, Emma Thompson, Holly Hunter, Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon, Frances McDormand, Helen Hunt (yes, even her) and Hilary Swank (ok, you can have Gwyneth Paltrow).

by Anonymousreply 208September 25, 2018 12:22 PM

Hmm. A mixed bag. But, it was more the changes in the industry I was referring to. It was transitional then and led to quite a few weak years, though not totally untalented actresses.

by Anonymousreply 209September 25, 2018 12:30 PM

I'd say the shift started with Paltrow, when the best actress Oscar turned into the ultimate accessory an It girl must have. I was cemented with the Kidman's win - by then it was a full blown PR bonanza with nothing to do with acting.

by Anonymousreply 210September 25, 2018 12:55 PM

J was barely famous when they were filming POSTCARDS, R195. I doubt they would risk that much on her. I think she probably would have been more than capable, but at the time she would have been seen as a risk.

by Anonymousreply 225September 25, 2018 5:36 PM

[QUOTE] I was cemented with the Kidman's win - by then it was a full blown PR bonanza with nothing to do with acting.

Why on Earth do people say this? Kidman's win in this category is one of my favorites and was in no way a done deal up until Denzel opened the envelope. She was neck-and-neck with Renee who, I believe, won the SAG. This was not an "It girl accessory." And one of the rare instances in this category where a borderline supporting role won for lead.

by Anonymousreply 226September 25, 2018 5:45 PM

Also, hasn't "J" always referred to Jessica Lange on this board? What idiot is trying to make Julia Roberts happen again?

by Anonymousreply 227September 25, 2018 5:47 PM

Patricia Nepal for Hud in 63 was a supporting role that won lead

by Anonymousreply 228September 25, 2018 5:48 PM

Roberts was already an Oscar nominee by that point and had done Steel Magnolias and Mystic Pizza. So not a total unknown.

Pretty Woman was her big catapult and that was the same year.

by Anonymousreply 229September 25, 2018 5:49 PM

M and G are established letters. They’re the only ones.

by Anonymousreply 230September 25, 2018 5:50 PM

If they were willing to take a risk on J for Pretty Woman — a romcom aimed at Middle America at that time but about prostitute — they could’ve had her be billed after recent co-star Shirley MacLaine.

Even on first release images she’s displayed prominently and given name billing.

by Anonymousreply 231September 25, 2018 5:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 232September 25, 2018 5:59 PM

Maybe R14 meant she doesn’t have any champions among TPTB not that she has a bad reputation.

She seems nice and down to earth.

by Anonymousreply 233September 25, 2018 6:17 PM

Gaga will not be a serious contender, even if she makes the nominee cut.

The serious contenders will be Glenn , Viola Davis, and Melissa McCarthy.

by Anonymousreply 234September 25, 2018 6:19 PM

Also, a lot will depend on whether Olivia Colman is nominated for Best Actress or Supporting for "The Favourite." Supposedly this is the other performance by a woman everyone's talking about.

by Anonymousreply 235September 25, 2018 6:21 PM

I think she'll have enough momentum to go Lead. Leaving the other two to go Supporting. I don't think she'll win though. Close has six previous nominations behind her, Colman doesn't.

by Anonymousreply 236September 25, 2018 6:30 PM

Colman's nomination will be her win. And how is Gaga not a serious contender? She's probably the contender with the most buzz so far.

by Anonymousreply 237September 25, 2018 6:35 PM

Maybe because when push comes to shove they won't give it to Gaga over a full-time actress like Close, Davis, Colman, Kidman, or Roberts.

by Anonymousreply 238September 25, 2018 6:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 258September 26, 2018 3:11 PM

Not much, R259. Given it's been how long ago since her last hit? 2010?

by Anonymousreply 259September 26, 2018 3:13 PM

I don't know, I don't seek out her music intentionally. The last one I heard was Perfect Illusion, she just screamed the whole thing. The song from the movie preview sounds more of the same.

by Anonymousreply 260September 26, 2018 3:16 PM

I don't think she's a great talent either. She has her outfits, antics, and, worst of all, 'my gays'. Cringe.

by Anonymousreply 261September 26, 2018 3:19 PM

She won't win, but she will dominate the season in publicity. So all these Oscar threads will inevitably be Gaga threads to some extent.

by Anonymousreply 262September 26, 2018 3:20 PM

Olivia Colman for the win this year thanks.

by Anonymousreply 263September 26, 2018 4:09 PM

You know Olivia's outacting all these bitches, but unfortunately she won't win.

by Anonymousreply 264September 26, 2018 4:39 PM

R265, did you think Mark Rylance would win for Bridge of Spies? Very few did and he still won. Same could hold true for Colman.

by Anonymousreply 265September 26, 2018 5:15 PM

No, I didn't see Rylance's win coming at all. I'd love for something similar to happen with Colman!

A Star is Born is sitting at 95%.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 266September 26, 2018 5:25 PM

Really A Star is Born could go anyway with the Academy. There is not doubt it will be huge at the box-office but that doesn't ensure a slew of Oscar nominations. The Academy may very well swamp it with double digit nominations, it could also just throw it a few sticks. Time will tell.

by Anonymousreply 267September 26, 2018 5:33 PM

So much is going to depend on category placement for Colman. Rylance won supporting; he had zero chance in lead. And while it’s easier for a more unknown or older actress to win in lead, Colman seems a shoo-in in supporting.

by Anonymousreply 268September 26, 2018 6:00 PM

As long as it’s not blatant category fraud (like Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl) I’d be all for Colman winning in Supporting. I’ve loved her since one of her first roles, a TV series called Peep Show. And her performance as a working class mom with a gay teenager in the BBC’s Beautiful People is fabulous.

by Anonymousreply 269September 26, 2018 6:20 PM

Gaga’s songs do not all sound alike and she is clearly talented. You people are obviously green with envy and/or don’t have a fucking clue about what you speak.

by Anonymousreply 270September 26, 2018 6:21 PM

We are going to have to deal with this Gaga obsessed fanatic all awards season.

by Anonymousreply 271September 26, 2018 7:32 PM

[quote] Gaga’s songs do not all sound alike.

Sure they do. They all sound like garbage.

by Anonymousreply 272September 26, 2018 7:42 PM

I guess the question about Gaga and winning awards is can she write as good a song as 'Evergreen'?

From her output so far the answer would seemingly be a big fat NO

Looks like Melissa McCowthy is currently rounding out the fifth slot.

by Anonymousreply 274September 27, 2018 7:14 AM

Kidman or Roberts could still get in. Wildcard, but possible.

by Anonymousreply 275September 27, 2018 10:06 AM

Or Saoirse Ronan. Maybe. Nobody beyond that though.

Are you kidding? M should've gotten her SAG card revoked for Ricki and the Flash.

by Anonymousreply 277September 27, 2018 10:31 AM

M actually should've won for THE POST. I suspected Russian involvement in her loss. She, and the film, are firm anti-Trump rebukes. There's definitely some overlap I see even here on DL, between not liking Streep enough and Russiaphilia. But, of course, "RAPED WHILE DYING" as if most fish don't use sex for their own gain.

by Anonymousreply 278September 27, 2018 10:38 AM

She's actually owed another Oscar by this point.

by Anonymousreply 279September 27, 2018 10:40 AM

[quote]M actually should've won for THE POST

The Post was fucking dreadful. It was right that it bombed, Oscar nomination wise, last year. Streep was so-so. The rest of it was awful.

F&F R279's misogynistic ass.

by Anonymousreply 294September 28, 2018 4:37 AM

Now that I’ve seen A Star Is Born, I’m sure Gaga will be a contender but could just as easily be left out of the mix. Her acting isn’t exactly revolutionary and all of her singing sounds the same. She’s not Cher in Moonstruck or even Bette Midler in The Rose.

What Garland and Streisand have in spades in their portrayals - yes, Streisand - is that you never doubt for a moment that their monumental talent completely eclipses that of their husband’s. In this version, Ally seems a little more on the cusp of stardom and what she achieves is little more than asserting a dated pop persona that doesn’t suggest much longevity. Hell, even Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard convinced as a global superstar despite her wooden acting. In this, Gaga seems to be distancing herself from her own pop career - which is presented as an irrelevant diversion - and “acting” the part that came naturally to her predecessors (except maybe Midler). She is most effective in her Southern rock persona and it’s a shame this is jettisoned so early.

However, nobidy in the audience feels the same about her as Cooper does, and his generous performance elevates hers substantially. He carries this film with his best screen performance to date. What initially starts out as a Sean Penn imitation steadily grows into a compelling and complex portrayal of a very sad man - all the drama comes from him and it is quite stunning. He reinvents this role as much as Daniel Craig re-invented Bond, and though Mason remains my favourite Norman Maine, Cooper is a respectable and very close 2nd. In fact, he just might be the best. He’s certainly the best thing about this film.

by Anonymousreply 295September 28, 2018 5:58 AM

^^And I’ll take Babs singing The Woman In The Moon over any musical performance Gaga gives in this version. She never has a Man That Got Away moment so the film is in the awkward position of having to convince us she is, indeed, a star of some magnitude.

by Anonymousreply 296September 28, 2018 6:02 AM

R296 I though Cooper was imitating Sam Elliot. He does look really great in the previews.

They've hyped Gaga so much, I have a feeling her buzz will die down by year's end and will be eclipsed by Cooper and Glenn Close, who is so winning that Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 297September 28, 2018 6:25 AM

Well, the film sits at this interesting cultural intersection of Southern rock and gay influenced pop culture. The ideal audience would be straight men who love Drag Race - whether that’s going to translate into Bodyguard like box office for Warners remains to be seen. You don’t have to be a Gaga fan to like this movie...but it probably helps. I don’t think it has the steam to win 5 Oscars on the night but it likely has enough steam to net Cooper Best Actor. As a directorial debut, it’ll be much admired and Cooper shows real promise as a director - I already want to see the next thing he directs.

by Anonymousreply 298September 28, 2018 7:06 AM

But yeah, I don’t think Gaga is going to deny any other deserving actress the Oscar on the night. Mostly because it’s more his story, she almost seems supporting. It’s a showcase for him. Plus, aside from one set piece (well, two if you count the Piaf thing), the music is pretty incidental. The ending - the very final scene - is somewhat awkwardly done as Cooper resists letting go of his hold on the film, never fully conceding the finale to Gaga.

by Anonymousreply 299September 28, 2018 7:10 AM

[quote]The ideal audience would be straight men who love Drag Race

So... non-existent?

by Anonymousreply 300September 28, 2018 7:18 AM

Olivia Colman for the win.

by Anonymousreply 301September 28, 2018 7:47 AM

Madonna, no.

I don't sign my initial with a period at the end. No need to.

As much as I rib Glenn "the poor man's Streep" Close, I'm actually rooting for the the old windbag.

by Anonymousreply 302September 28, 2018 8:02 AM

Actually, now that I realise Cooper’s next directorial project is the Bernstein bio pic, maybe I’m not so interested but I’ll keep an open mind.

by Anonymousreply 303September 28, 2018 8:42 AM

[quote]Oh. “Misogyny.” Is that what it’s called when someone points out foreign regimes

No. It's what it's called when someone - you, in this case - uses the word "fish" to mean a woman.

By the way, almost this entire thread is you. Hope you're having fun talking to yourself.

by Anonymousreply 304September 28, 2018 8:58 AM

'Misogyny' was invented by white women so they could pretend to be oppressed.

by Anonymousreply 307September 28, 2018 11:09 AM

Do we need to add Redford into the Best Actor race, now that he's getting great reviews for Old Man and A Gun?

by Anonymousreply 308September 28, 2018 11:41 PM

He got great reviews for All is Lost too. Didn’t happen.

by Anonymousreply 309September 28, 2018 11:50 PM

The “All is Lost” snub makes me nervous, but it could always work in his favor. I think the only reason Robert Duvall got in for “The Judge” is that he seemed on the verge of an Oscar nomination for “Get Low” the year before, so that might help Redford. It seems rude to snub an old man twice for a final Oscar nod.

Plus, do we have a veteran in Best Actor? He could fill that niche,

by Anonymousreply 310September 29, 2018 1:05 AM

R296 makes some great points. I actually didn't think of the "star" dynamics in the new ASIB because it always seems like Cooper is the serious, respected artist while Gaga's character is a bit of a sellout. Her brand of pop (in the film) is soulless while her music with Cooper is soulful and electric. We hear and see Ally winning awards but r296 is right that she never gets that big song or moment although the last song tries, but Cooper has an edit which reaffirms the best music is the songs with both Cooper and Gaga.

Cooper is a revelation.

by Anonymousreply 317September 29, 2018 4:20 AM

Elisabeth Moss is an intensely homely actress who does quality projects. Many critics and viewers confuse that with actual talent.

by Anonymousreply 318September 29, 2018 4:41 AM

[quote]Elisabeth Moss is an intensely homely actress who does quality projects. Many critics and viewers confuse that with actual talent.

My thoughts too.

Like Kate Winslet there's only so much I can take of watching her scowling, soured-milk, British face.

by Anonymousreply 319September 29, 2018 5:28 AM

To my mind, Cooper stops just short of bearing his own soul, so I wouldn’t call his performance a revelation - a revelatory performance suggests infinite possibilities, and his acting ability is still a finite spectrum. But he is very committed and very easy with it - it’s a performance that doesn’t ask for attention and instead draws you in. Also, he’s as convincing as she is as a musician - perhaps more, as so much of her musical persona is about artifice - and it gives his performance real authority. While other Norman Maines were presented as terrors, Cooper’s is isolated, sad, lonely, lost and pathetic on his own.

By contrast, perhaps Gaga’s best scenes are with Andrew Dice Clay - as father and daughter, they share an easy, authentic rapport that feels lived in and believable. I could also watch an entire movie of Gaga’s Ally smarting off to restaurant managers she works with - it’s the early, scrappy side of her Ally that is so appealing. But Ally doesn’t become “Lady Gaga” with all of her attention getting pretensions and “fame game” playbook - instead she becomes Meagan Trainor, which leaves Gaga kind of hamstrung, because Gaga herself has always known better than to present herself as that.

by Anonymousreply 320September 29, 2018 8:14 AM

Elisabeth Moss certainly gets fucked a lot in all her movies - maybe not as much as Issa Rae on Insecure (But Fuck Me Anyway) - and she’s always having babies. She must have the “Kate Winslet Clause” in all of her contracts whereby her character’s epiphany always cums during cunnilingus.

someone posted that not every oscar winning movie plays automatically well overseas, especially if it deals with very specific issues. It's so true. I live in Italy and The Blind side (oscar for Bullock, huge american BO) was not released in cinemas here. I was shocked, i think it was the first time ever something like that happened.

by Anonymousreply 348September 30, 2018 11:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 349October 1, 2018 1:23 AM

The Blind Side is a very American film really. It deals with a black eventual football scholar and his white savior. Outside of America there's no where near as much white guilt nor affluent black people.

The film and Bullock's performance are rightly quite criticized, even at the time there was a sense that the Lifetime level of both weren't Oscar worthy.

I think Bullock's performance is best watched imaging DL had created the perfect frau.

by Anonymousreply 363October 2, 2018 11:18 AM

Man, this thread went downhill quickly.

by Anonymousreply 364October 3, 2018 12:49 AM

I’ve seen “A Star is Born.” Gaga is really good, and I think she’ll deserve her eventual nomination, but don’t quite see her winning. It’s not an undeniable performance, and since she can easily win Song for “Shallow,” she won’t go home empty-handed. Glenn still feels like the obvious winner. And she did spend the summer campaigning, so she has a head-start.

The real question is how many Oscars Bradley Cooper wins. I think he might actually go home with four, only losing Screenplay (musicals just aren’t considered writer’s movies), and even if you love the movie, the idea of him getting as many Oscars in a night as Katharine Hepburn did over a half century seems insane.

by Anonymousreply 365October 3, 2018 1:28 AM

To be honest, I didnt really like the Shallow song, but I guess it's the frontrunner so far for best song.

Also, if Lady Gaga wins BA, it will officially make her the first openly out LGBT actor to win in an Oscar acting category, am I correct? She has said she bisexual, no?

by Anonymousreply 369October 3, 2018 3:47 PM

Who is Bale playing? Chevy Chase?

by Anonymousreply 370October 3, 2018 3:48 PM

I see a lot of people predicting Malek, but I have to wonder if the Singer connection will hurt him. It's odd that half the actors that ever worked with Woody Allen had to issue statements in the past year distancing themselves from him, with some donating their salaries to charities, yet everyone's thinking Rami will be fine?

by Anonymousreply 371October 3, 2018 8:19 PM

Malek's performance looks terrible judging from the trailers alone.

by Anonymousreply 372October 3, 2018 8:25 PM

Bohemian Rhapsody seems like a dud.

by Anonymousreply 373October 3, 2018 8:37 PM

That Vice trailer looks great btw. We finally have a race in Best Actor.

by Anonymousreply 374October 3, 2018 8:55 PM

So Bale vs Gosling will probably be the narrative for Best Actor.

by Anonymousreply 375October 3, 2018 9:49 PM

Bradley Cooper's getting a lot of buzz as well. A lot of people have already seen First Man and while they say both Gosling and Claire Foy are up for nominations, I haven't heard Oscar-winning buzz for either. Bale has literally every gimmick going for him. He's essentially doing what Oldman did last year.

by Anonymousreply 376October 3, 2018 9:55 PM

The Freddie Mercury movie is DOA, not a single nomination.

by Anonymousreply 377October 3, 2018 10:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 379October 3, 2018 10:21 PM

Gonna be Gaga.

A friend of mine in London was one of the stand-ins on Bohemian Rhapsody. He thinks Rami Malek’s performance will be great. He (and Malek and everybody on the crew) hated that asshole Bryan Singer quite intensely.

by Anonymousreply 380October 3, 2018 10:23 PM

r380: the huge Singer mess means that the Mercury movie is a pariah. No one would give them an oscar. Sucks for Malek, who might be quite good in the role, but that's the law of the land now. It would be like give a Woody Allen film an oscar.

by Anonymousreply 381October 3, 2018 10:30 PM

[quote]So Bale vs Gosling will probably be the narrative for Best Actor.

No, Bale vs Cooper. The Gosling performance is said to be very internal and stoic. Not enough bells and whistles for the voters.

by Anonymousreply 382October 3, 2018 10:32 PM

Gold Derby's YouTube channel has started with the Oscar prognostication. At one point they said that the A Star is Born producers may push the film in Drama instead of Comedy/Musical at the Golden Globes. May not be the best move as Cooper and Gaga seem guaranteed Globes if it's in the Comedy/Musical category.

by Anonymousreply 383October 3, 2018 10:37 PM

No. They got rid of Singer. He's officially no longer involved. And although he is a name that is always on everyone's lips re some kind of sexual scandal, that wasn't why he was dropped. It was his erratic behavior and not showing up (drug use?). He doesn't taint it at all, and they have a great trailer. No one's even going to think about Singer if it's good.

by Anonymousreply 386October 3, 2018 11:56 PM

Uhhh, R387, he gets sole directorial credit, though. They brought on Dexter Fletcher to replace him, but only something like 15% of his work will actually be seen on screen.

by Anonymousreply 387October 4, 2018 12:09 AM

Still doesn't matter. There is no Singer "mess" at this point like there was with Spacey at this time last year. Just the scandal of his being dropped from the movie.

If it's good - and no one knows yet, save for the terrific trailer - and Malek pulls it off, then it can be an Oscar player. The problem with that Getty thing - which still managed to score a high profile nomination for Plummer - was that the movie got mixed reviews at best, and that the whole thing was on one timeline - about three months from the Spacey scandal breaking to the revamped movie getting reviewed.

by Anonymousreply 388October 4, 2018 12:16 AM

Singer is also exec producer on it. The first question on any list is going to be about is involvement. The publicists can do their best to work around it... and good luck to them.

But you keep spinning BR PR r389. I had feeling this movie was going to bring out a lot of rabid Freddie fans who will defend this shot show to the death.

by Anonymousreply 389October 4, 2018 12:26 AM

Malek may very well get a Best Actor nom, from what I've seen in the trailers. If the rest of the movie holds up story-wise and it does decent bo, he's in. The nom will be his award though, no chance of winning.

It's Bale vs. Cooper at this point. Gosling and either John D Washington or Redford (perhaps) will round out the top five. It's too bad imo that First Reformed came out earlier this year instead of end of year and did no business, because it was Ethan Hawke's best work and it would be nice to see him recognized.

by Anonymousreply 390October 4, 2018 1:26 AM

Stop talking about the men. Eyes on me!!!

by Anonymousreply 391October 4, 2018 1:28 AM

Blackkklansman is being wildly overestimated. I think Hawke is the fifth space; he’s a veteran with a career spanning four decades. He’s certainly got a better shot than Denzel’s kid who barely got any mentions (much less raves) in the reviews for his own movie.

by Anonymousreply 392October 4, 2018 1:51 AM

Don't forget Viggo Mortensen in Greek Book. The Academy loves him.

by Anonymousreply 393October 4, 2018 1:54 AM

You're right r394. Viggo instead of Washington or Redford (or Malek, If Bohemian Rhapsody bombs or the movie sucks).

What the Supporting race at this point for the men?

Sam Elliot Rockwell and/or Carrell for Vice Marashala Ali for Green Book (or is he co-lead?) Brian Tyree Henry for If Beale Street.... Timothee Chalamet for Beautiful Boy Adam Driver for Blakkklanman Richard E Grant for the Melissa McCarthy forgery movie Michael B Jordan for Black Panther (long shot imo)

by Anonymousreply 394October 4, 2018 2:04 AM

Let's try that again:

Sam Elliot Rockwell and/or Carrell for Vice Marashala Ali for Green Book (or is he co-lead?) Brian Tyree Henry for If Beale Street.... Timothee Chalamet for Beautiful Boy Adam Driver for Blakkklanman Richard E Grant for the Melissa McCarthy forgery movie Michael B Jordan for Black Panther (long shot imo)

by Anonymousreply 395October 4, 2018 2:05 AM

I give up

by Anonymousreply 396October 4, 2018 2:05 AM

You gotta double place if you want to create those line breaks.

Your list of possible nominees looks good. Daniel Kaluuya's getting buzz for Widows as well.

by Anonymousreply 397October 4, 2018 2:09 AM

Double space*

by Anonymousreply 398October 4, 2018 2:10 AM

If “Green Book” is the crowd-pleaser everyone expects, Viggo should get in. It would be strange for him to get two Best Actor nominations for movies up for nothing else, only to be snubbed for a Best Picture contender.

I could see the nominees being five of the following six: Bale, Cooper, Gosling, Hawke, Mortensen and Redford. I’m still not sold on Malek. The quality of the film probably isn’t there.

by Anonymousreply 399October 4, 2018 2:10 AM

All white lead actor nominees, r400. That's not gonna fly.

by Anonymousreply 400October 4, 2018 2:31 AM

Are you just trying to stir shit r401?

The "OscarsSoWhite" controversy was from there being zero nonwhite acting nominees (2 years in a row). Just last year best actress and best supporting actor happened to be all white and there was no drama

by Anonymousreply 401October 4, 2018 2:37 AM

No. I'm not, r402. This year, Malek and Washington are getting buzz for their respected buzzworthy films, particularly Blackkklansman. If they're not included (one or both), it will drive Twitter crazy and create more backlash against the Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 402October 4, 2018 2:43 AM

Oh dear. "Twitter goes crazy" every day, its half the point of twitter. By nature of any contest where only a few can be recognized some people will get upset. That's normal.

by Anonymousreply 403October 4, 2018 2:46 AM

Relax r401. Viola Davis, Regina King, Mahershala Ali are all considered top fives in their categories, along with multiple noms for Black Panther, Blackkklansmen, Widows, etc.

by Anonymousreply 404October 4, 2018 2:50 AM

Sorry, meant for r402

by Anonymousreply 405October 4, 2018 2:51 AM

Ugh. R401 not 2. Fuck this no editing posts shit

by Anonymousreply 406October 4, 2018 2:52 AM

Willem Dafoe's also getting buzz for At Eternity's Gate. He won the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival and was just nominated last year for a small film, so he could get in again.

by Anonymousreply 407October 4, 2018 2:58 AM

Regina King is getting great buzz for If Beale Street Could Talk. I think she may be the frontrunner at this point.

If a couple of the acting categories are all white will it matter?

by Anonymousreply 408October 4, 2018 3:00 AM

[quote]If a couple of the acting categories are all white will it matter?

Not at all. The only time it mattered, like R402 said, is when no people of color were nominated. It's strange to think that #OscarsSoWhite wouldn't have happened at all had Idris Elba been nominated for Beasts of No Nation.

by Anonymousreply 409October 4, 2018 3:03 AM

Juliano was and still is, to a generation, their Jane fonda..Faye Dunawa. Most importantly she appealed to women and men.... She was bigger than the male stars for years. That's rarely ever happened. And u really can use the word 'beloved' about her. A lot of its tk do with one movie, Pretty Woman...like SOM is to Julie Andrews.

by Anonymousreply 410October 4, 2018 3:13 AM

[quote]All white lead actor nominees. That's not gonna fly.

I find these kind of comments strange. It's not as if AMPAS has a nominating committee of a few people who sit in a room and decide who gets nominated, while taking steps to carefully balance the ethnic mix of the nominees. Nomination ballots are submitted by its thousands of members, with each one voting in accordance with his/her own preferences, which are subject to his/her own biases, prejudices, and personal agendas.

by Anonymousreply 411October 4, 2018 4:12 AM

I was listening to an Oscar podcast earlier today and one of the prognosticators who loved The Favourite suggested that they push Emma Stone in lead as she allegedly has the most screen time, and Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman in supporting. He also said that Colman could easily win in supporting. I'd be alright with that if our beloved O could take home an Oscar!

by Anonymousreply 412October 4, 2018 9:37 PM

Colman is obviously not the lead, and she's a lock in for supporting.

by Anonymousreply 413October 4, 2018 9:43 PM

[Quote]also said that Colman could easily win in supporting.

We'll see about that

by Anonymousreply 414October 4, 2018 9:45 PM

Brilliant suggestions, all! There are other actors in the film besides me after all, so I shall submit myself as Supporting for THE WIFE! Wonderful advice.

by Anonymousreply 415October 4, 2018 10:01 PM

R415, she would seem to have the Golden Globe over King, at least. Them bein’ foreign and all.

by Anonymousreply 416October 4, 2018 10:15 PM

From what I’ve heard, King has a small part but one big scene in her movie. I don’t think that beats a quasi-lead like Colman. It’s not impossible (Beatrice Straight, Judi Dench), but the trend is definitely toward giving Oscars to actors who could reasonably be considered leads.

by Anonymousreply 417October 5, 2018 2:28 AM

People love to give Regina King awards (she just last month won another Emmy in a somewhat unexpected turn of events), so I really wouldn't count her out.

by Anonymousreply 418October 5, 2018 2:36 PM

My work is beloved!

by Anonymousreply 419October 5, 2018 5:36 PM

I just saw ASIB and all I can say is WOW. Performances, music, direction, script...this thing is bound for Oscar glory.

by Anonymousreply 420October 6, 2018 12:30 AM

I think Cooper has a strong chance at Lead Actor this year. There's competition sure - but if he carries ASIB the way everyone is saying he does, I think he's the front runner. He's has a great shot at screenplay and Best Picture as well (I think Director may be reaching, since it's his 1st effort). He's been nommed for acting before and passed over; this is supposed to be his 'role of a lifetime'.

King is American and I think in this instance that gives her an edge over Colman. Box office will matter here too; Lathinmos films do well on the art house circuit but aren't considered mainstream at least not in the US. This particular one may break through a bit. If Beale Street Could Talk should do fine domestically, esp as its Jenkins's follow up.

by Anonymousreply 421October 6, 2018 1:34 AM

The trouble with director, R422, is that his stiffest competition is probably Alfonso Cuaron, and he won for his last film and would be contending for a foreign-language Netflix film without any stars. That’s a recipe for Oscar disaster.

Beyond that, who is there? Damien Chazelle? Peter Farrelly? Adam McKay? They’re never going to go for a Yorgos Lanthimos, so I think of Cooper doesn’t get Afflecked out of Director, it’s probably his.

by Anonymousreply 422October 6, 2018 1:52 AM

R423, don’t count out Barry Jenkins.

by Anonymousreply 423October 6, 2018 1:54 AM

...or Adam McKay, either r423. Vice looks very strong from the trailers, advance word its fantastic. McKay did a great job with The Big Short, telling a very complex tale (subprime mortgages, CDOs etc) in an understandable and highly entertaining manner, audiences loved it. If he does the same with Cheney's story and the movie makes bank he could go all the way.

If you're correct and Coopers manages to get Director he'll get Screenplay, but then is unlikely to get Actor (that trifecta is very rare); expect Bale or Mortensen then. But no matter the rest, if ASIB does the large bo it's expected to do it will be very hard to beat for Picture.

by Anonymousreply 424October 6, 2018 2:07 AM

The only reason I'll watch the 2019 Oscar broadcast is to chase your observations, live on the DL!

The 2017 Oscar fiasco was classic DL - The threads were aflame!

by Anonymousreply 425October 6, 2018 2:12 AM

Alfonso Cuaron, Bradley Cooper, Adam McKay, Barry Jenkins, Damien Chazelle... I can see director being those 5. Spike Lee and Yorgos Lanthimos may have outside shots. It'd be cool to see Jenkins and Chazelle nominated in the same category again.

I remember the 2017 Oscar thread. That was a riot. I was the first user to notice the hubbub in the background after La La Land "won".

by Anonymousreply 426October 6, 2018 2:15 AM

R427, what do you mean you were the first user to notice the hubbub? We were all watching the same telecast.

by Anonymousreply 427October 6, 2018 2:17 AM

I think he means he was the first to post about it on the DL thread that night r428. I was on that thread - was working and didn't have access to a tv - and it was my only means of knowing what was going down at the Dolby. It was a classic DL riot - go look it up in the archives.

by Anonymousreply 428October 6, 2018 2:19 AM

What R429 said. I was the comment that said, "What's going on in the background???" and then shit hit the fan. Good times.

by Anonymousreply 429October 6, 2018 2:22 AM

The Jenkins movie is going to be a tough sell. Score, screenplay, and supporting actress are it’s strongest categories, but I think it’s going to underperform elsewhere.

Cuaron winning would mean that the last five out of six Best Director awards will have gone to Mexican directors- not only that, but the same two directors four times out of that six. I just can’t see that happening in a year when there are arguably four black directors in contention (Jenkins, Lee, Coogler, McQueen), and a black director has never won. The optics on that would not be good. Not talking about deserts, but just how the campaigning could go.

by Anonymousreply 432October 6, 2018 2:38 AM

R424, I don’t think Jenkins is in the running for Director. There’s been a somewhat muted reaction to Beale Street that makes me feel like critics want to like it more than they actually do. It feels more like a guaranteed second-tier Best Picture nominee that gets a few top nominations (King, Screenplay), but doesn’t get Director. Those happen all the time, and this feels like one of them.

by Anonymousreply 433October 6, 2018 2:43 AM

Then how about we swap Jenkins out with Spike Lee? So it's Cuaron, Cooper, McKay, Chazelle, and Lee?

Also, do we see any out of the blue nominations? Think Paul Thomas Anderson last year, or Michael Haneke and Benh Zeitlin all those years ago instead of Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow?

by Anonymousreply 434October 6, 2018 2:52 AM

Coogler may stand a chance here. Black Panther did massive box office, one of the best superhero offerings plus a cultural touchstone.

by Anonymousreply 435October 6, 2018 2:54 AM

R433, I still can’t believe Steve McQueen lost nearly everything to Alfonso Cuaron. But the love for “Gravity” always baffled me outside the basic techs, and I think “13 Years a Slave” is easily the best of the Best Picture winners for the 2010s. He really should have won Best Director.

I don’t think “Widows” will get McQueen the Director prize he deserves, but from what I’ve heard it’ll be a lot more fun than a lot of the big contenders (and for a director whose movies have been so deadly serious thus far, that is really surprising).

by Anonymousreply 436October 6, 2018 3:01 AM

[quote]It feels more like a guaranteed second-tier Best Picture nominee that gets a few top nominations (King, Screenplay), but doesn’t get Director. Those happen all the time, and this feels like one of them.

Watch Beale Street mirror CMBYN with 4 noms: picture, one acting nod, adapted screenplay, and score (instead of song)

by Anonymousreply 437October 6, 2018 3:05 AM

Gravity was pure cinema, and I'm thankful it received the love it did if only because Cuaron finally won an Oscar (two actually) as well as Emmanuel Lubezki, who should have already been a winner. When they gave him three in a row it was an embarrassment of riches and he deserved each and every one. I wish the Academy had loved Children of Men as much, as that was easily his masterpiece.

by Anonymousreply 438October 6, 2018 3:16 AM

R439, I think the Editing one would have been enough for Cuaron, but agree that “Children of Men” is his masterpiece (I haven’t seen “Roma” yet).

And Lubezski won for one movie I liked but didn’t love (Gravity), one movie I didn’t like but still thought was watchable (Birdman), and one movie I absolutely despise (The Revenant), but I can’t complain about any of his wins. I just wish his skills were in the service of better films.

by Anonymousreply 439October 6, 2018 3:26 AM

Gaga will definitely win if they nominate “Shallow” for Best Original Song, which is highly likely.

by Anonymousreply 440October 6, 2018 3:30 AM

No fucking way will Spike Lee be nominated. Hollywood hates him for good reason. He’s a racist and a thoroughly obnoxious piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 441October 6, 2018 9:14 AM

i don't know who Regina King is. and i think i'm talking for anyone who's not an american.

by Anonymousreply 442October 6, 2018 3:05 PM

Colman - BAFTA

King - Oscar

by Anonymousreply 443October 6, 2018 3:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 444October 6, 2018 4:42 PM

I have seen Beale Street. I loved it and it seems the TIFF audiences did, too since it was the runner up to Green Book for the People's Choice Award. However, festivals are different from the general population and I wonder how well received it will be.

I think they will focus their campaign on King, since she is receiving more buzz than Jenkins.

Personally speaking, I love King but she has given better performances but I think Hollywood loves her, and she is highly respected for her acting and directing.

I hope Brian Tyree Henry is nominated for Supporting Actor. He has the best scene in the film and he's terrific.

by Anonymousreply 451October 7, 2018 2:06 AM

Just saw Roma and loved it. Jesus, Cuaron is a fantastic director. I’d love to see the lead (Yalitzia ???) be up for Best Actress and the one playing the mother up for Best Supporting Actress. And I want the hot piece of ass who plays Fermin inside me quite deeply after I rim him silly.

by Anonymousreply 452October 7, 2018 3:34 AM

Before I actually saw A Star Is Born I was completely on the bandwagon, thinking it would be a strong contender in all the major categories. Now that I’ve seen it I think its only real shots are the two music categories.

by Anonymousreply 453October 7, 2018 12:31 PM

Several months ago Michelle Pfeiffer seemed to be a sure bet for an Oscar nomination for Where Is Kyra?, but now you don't even hear about the movie, despite the film's mostly positive reviews and raves for her performance.

by Anonymousreply 454October 8, 2018 4:31 AM

Every year Michelle is an early favourite and then nothing. The problem is she doesn't pick strong scripts.

by Anonymousreply 455October 8, 2018 7:05 AM

You may not have liked it, r454, but the majority of the reviews are raves, for the film, for Cooper's direction, for his acting, and for Gaga's. It's going to do very well in the nominations, and there's nothing you and your opinion can do about it.

by Anonymousreply 456October 8, 2018 9:41 AM

[quote]I'd be alright with that if our beloved O could take home an Oscar!

"Our beloved O"??? Who the FUCK declared Olivia Coleman a DL icon? NO ONE. She's not "beloved" at all. She's a good actress, she'll probably get nominated if she sticks with supporting, but that's about it. She's not beloved.

by Anonymousreply 457October 8, 2018 9:43 AM

[quote]Several months ago Michelle Pfeiffer seemed to be a sure bet for an Oscar nomination for Where Is Kyra?

Wow. I didn't even hear about that one, and had to look it up. Michelle would have to do some heavy campaigning to get a nomination off a movie no one saw or even remembers.

by Anonymousreply 458October 8, 2018 10:03 AM

Sam Elliott gave an interview where he broke down in tears praising Gaga. He said he never worked with an actress with her ability, including Katherine Ross. The interviewer had to stop and comfort Sam.

by Anonymousreply 459October 8, 2018 10:32 AM

Sam Elliott was WONDERFUL. I only cried once during the film and it was during his scene with Cooper after he’s been punched and he tells Jackson that he had already told him about their dad but Jackson was drunk when he told him. I think Elliott is a lock for a supporting nomination for this.

by Anonymousreply 460October 8, 2018 2:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 478October 10, 2018 10:49 PM

Portman in Vox Lux is similar to Dev Patel in Lion.

I don't think it'll ultimately matter. It's a divisive film and will probably go nowhere. I'm not sure why Neon is insistent on rushing it out during an already overcrowded December. The mixed reviews will mean it gets lost in the shuffle.

by Anonymousreply 482October 11, 2018 4:22 AM

It's probably just a way to get Portman a nomination.

Redford already has a Directing Oscar, so I don't think he can overcome the Bradley Cooper praise this year. But yes, I think Close will be able to stave off the current Lady Caca overhype.

by Anonymousreply 489October 13, 2018 6:21 AM

Can't see*

by Anonymousreply 490October 13, 2018 6:23 AM

R480, people always say “Oh, the Academy will nominate or award this famous person for ratings,” and yet I don’t really see any evidence that it actually happens. They’ll nominate Gaga because they love the movie, not because her Little Monsters will watch the show. And the are so many races where the less-famous person wins, even when the celebrity is widely predicted. Academy voters just don’t care, and the show’s producers, who do, don’t vote.

The Globes totally do that, but they’re a different case, given that their voters are a couple dozen journalists who want an evening hanging out with A-listers.

by Anonymousreply 491October 13, 2018 1:37 PM

I couldn’t make it through the Vice trailer. Looks like a steaming pile of shit. Bale and Rockwell look like they’re trying too hard at the Acting Olympics. Insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 492October 13, 2018 4:47 PM

I'm very curious as to how Vice will do at the box-office. I feel about it the same way I feel about the "Fair and Balanced" movie about Fox News' sexual harassment scandals - who exactly are these movies for? Conservatives will avoid them like the plague and liberals will only like them if they are vicious satire. And releasing Vice wide over Christmas just seems like a big mistake. I don't think many people want to see a movie about Dick Cheney over the holidays.

by Anonymousreply 493October 14, 2018 2:45 AM

[quote]I don't think many people want to see a movie about Dick Cheney over the holidays.

No one thought anyone would see a movie about the 2008 financial and mortgage crisis - and a satirical one at that. But that's exactly what they did when The Big Short came out at Christmas three years ago. Over $110 mil at the box office in the US alone. Same team who did Vice.

It's not so much a biopic of Cheney as it's a biting satirical look at the Rethug machinery from the Nixon-Ford regimes brought back around for Bush II (Cheney, Rumsfield) wreaking their own brand of havoc and corruption, with repercussions to this day. The trailer appears to be mocking most of the principal characters.

You're about $40m over your claim. It made $70m. Still good, but even The Post did better.

by Anonymousreply 495October 14, 2018 4:05 AM

$70 mil in the US, over $130 million worldwide. Not shabby considering the subject matter.

by Anonymousreply 496October 14, 2018 4:11 AM

Neither Glenn nor Gaga.

by Anonymousreply 497October 14, 2018 4:19 AM

I think Paramount was extremely happy with the $70m The Big Short got. And it won the PGA Award and was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 498October 14, 2018 4:29 AM

The Big Short was very good, I thought it would be boring

by Anonymousreply 499October 14, 2018 4:29 AM

“The Big Short” really was an unexpected masterpiece. It took subject matter that was complex, boring and depressing and made it accessible and entertaining.

If “Vice” even comes close to that standard, it should have no trouble getting in.

by Anonymousreply 500October 14, 2018 4:36 PM

I don’t think anybody wants to see a film about Dick Cheney. Period. Comparing the subject matter to the global financial meltdown is like comparing apples and tennis shoes. I also think we’re all a bit beyond satire atm.

Still predicting this will BOMB. (See recent Michael Moore doc that nobody turned out for.)

by Anonymousreply 501October 14, 2018 5:31 PM

R502, I bet you’re one of those who predicted The Greatest Showman and The Post would BOMB, too.

by Anonymousreply 502October 14, 2018 5:38 PM

Well, whatever success The Post received it was still kind of an empty exercise. Not sure why anybody is still talking about it.

The success of The Greatest Showman did not surprise me. I also thought it was always a possibility that Trump would become President.

by Anonymousreply 503October 14, 2018 5:46 PM

[quote] [R502], I bet you’re one of those who predicted The Greatest Showman and The Post would BOMB, too.

Actually, EVERYONE thought The Greatest Showman would bomb. If you remember back a year ago this time, the WOM was deadly and the reviews were even worse. No one thought it would be a hit. It's probably the biggest unexpected success the film biz has seen in a while.

by Anonymousreply 504October 14, 2018 7:46 PM

The only thing disputed was the claim of TBS grossing $110m in the US. There's no need to get so defensive. No one said it was a shit movie or even a bomb.

Hi-----DL Fave Timothee here-----Beautiful Boy grossed $221,437 this weekend------- Wow....200,000 Dollars?....that's a lot of money. So I'm pretty sure I am a shoe in for an Oscar!!! In Beautiful Boy I play a feminine doper. Basically it's the same feminine doper I played in Lady Bird---but with more lines. I hope I can count on the Academy for recognizing my talent. I'm like DiCaprio and Streep rolled into one ---- except I wear Women's Jackets and cheap necklaces. And remember---not every Oscar Worthy Actor can carry a 200,000 dollar opening weekend---but I did it!!!

R507 When the movie gets wide opening the numbers will decrease, be sure of that. BB, IF everything goes well, will make 15/20M domestically.

by Anonymousreply 508October 14, 2018 8:24 PM

You obviously weren’t paying attention, R506. I specifically remember some here on DL predicting that The Big Short would be a bomb.

Well, smell YOU, Nostradamus/R504.

The Greatest Showman was a true surprise. And it had legs. Plus, Christmas release. I am surprised they didn't wait until the holidays to release A Star is Born. .

by Anonymousreply 513October 16, 2018 12:50 AM

With Colman officially going lead, and Gaga/Glenn taking spots 1 and 2, people like Davis/Kidman/McCarthy/Collette/Roberts/Ronan are vying for the last two slots.

My predictions:

Close

Gaga

Colman

McCarthy

Kidman

with Davis in 6th as a possible spoiler

by Anonymousreply 514October 18, 2018 12:10 AM

I actually think Collette gets a slot before Kidman.

by Anonymousreply 515October 18, 2018 12:16 AM

Collette would have to have a really strong run with the critics to get a nomination, and even then she’d probably barely make it in. And I think Kidman is at the point where voters adore her enough that she’ll get nominated if she works for it and the film gets good enough reviews, like a Blanchett or Winslet. (She doesn’t get automatic nominations, though. Only Streep can swing those).

Are there any reviews of “Mary, Queen of Scots” yet? I’m about ready to say Ronan is either the eventual winner or she gets ignored altogether. No middle ground for Saoirse.

by Anonymousreply 516October 18, 2018 12:25 AM

No reviews, but since it played zero festivals a lot of the chatter is that it’s DOA. No Saroise.

by Anonymousreply 517October 18, 2018 12:35 AM

You’re almost certainly right, R518, but if it turns out not to be a disaster, Ronan could reshape the Best Actress narrative.

What other recent Oscar-bait films skipped the festival circuit yet still did well with the Oscars? The only ones I can think of are the late-finishing ones like “The Post” and “Phantom Thread,” but even those either massively under-performed or were never in contention for the top categories. Can anyone think of an example that might give Ronan a path to beating Glenn and Gaga?

by Anonymousreply 518October 18, 2018 2:34 AM

I cant recall but I think neither American Hustle and The Big Short played at festivals (I know Big Short didn’t), though both were big studio movies and those usually don’t play the feats.

by Anonymousreply 519October 18, 2018 8:16 PM

I looked it up, and “Fences” didn’t play the festivals, even though (like “Mary, Queen of Scots”) it was a drama designed with Oscars and not major box-office in mind.

And, technically, “The Big Short” did play at the AFI festival, but that one is so late that it doesn’t count for building buzz like TIFF, Toronto and Venice traditionally do.

by Anonymousreply 520October 19, 2018 4:10 AM

Shoot, before anyone tells me I’m worse than Hitler and should die in a grease fire, I know TIFF and Toronto are the same thing! I meant Telluride.

by Anonymousreply 521October 19, 2018 4:16 AM

You call not-necessarily-expected nominations for Director and Supporting Actress underperforming w/r/t Phantom Thread? How does that work exactly? I think it might’ve gotten in for Score too. One of the success stories of Oscar nom morning last year.

by Anonymousreply 522October 19, 2018 1:28 PM

R523, either massively under-performed (like “The Post”) or never were in contention to win the top categories (and “Phantom Thread” wasn’t for Anderson, Day-Lewis or Manville). I do agree that it was the big surprise that morning, and wonder if it could have been a more serious contender had it built up buzz earlier.

by Anonymousreply 523October 19, 2018 11:18 PM

I think Manville was the clear standout from the five nominees last year and would have been a memorable “surprise” winner a la Marcia Gay Harden. Her Oscar clip got the biggest reaction from the audience which sometimes is an indicator of the winner.

Octavia Spencer literally phoned in her Oscar scene!

by Anonymousreply 524October 19, 2018 11:34 PM

Do we have a new ASIB thread?

by Anonymousreply 525October 19, 2018 11:38 PM

McFatty and and Collette over Kidman and Roberts? Don't see it.

by Anonymousreply 526October 20, 2018 4:59 AM

McCarthy is getting absolute raves, but it is a film probably no one will see

by Anonymousreply 527October 20, 2018 5:01 AM

Kidman and Roberts are receiving career best reviews. Two icons vs two light heavy weights doesn't seem like something the Academy would do.

by Anonymousreply 528October 20, 2018 5:02 AM

I think Carey Mulligan is giving a too-brilliant-to-be-ignored performance in Wildlife.

by Anonymousreply 529October 20, 2018 10:36 AM

R530 Bc she’s always like that and I’m a fan.

Re: Saoirse. Nah, this year is not for her. Maybe in the Supporting Actress category Margot could still get in....a big maybe here.

by Anonymousreply 530October 20, 2018 10:46 AM

R528, Richard E. Grant is being spoken of regularly as one of the top five contenders for supporting actor. I do think people are going to see their film and that both will be nominated.

by Anonymousreply 531October 20, 2018 12:32 PM

[quote] I do think people are going to see their film and that both will be nominated.

Because that's how it ALWAYS works.

by Anonymousreply 532October 20, 2018 1:59 PM

Everyone with a brain knows that my son, Jaden, deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the skating movie. If he is not rewarded the Oscar, it's only because Academy voters were too busy ironing their white hoods. (Tweet 1/578)

by Anonymousreply 533October 21, 2018 3:09 AM

Best Actress nominees will include both Glenn and GaGa. Melissa McCarthy playing Lee Israel will also gain a nomination, and so will Viola Davis. Olivia Coleman will round it all out.

by Anonymousreply 534October 21, 2018 3:24 AM

That five makes the most sense, unless voters disregard Colman’s lead campaign and still vote for her in Supporting. Usually it happens the other way, though. This could be one of those years where the clear contenders emerge early and everything turns out exactly as predicted, which often happens in the category.

I think by this time last year McDormand, Ronan, Hawkins, Robbie and Streep were considered the consensus five, and even though Streep had a few misses, that’s exactly how it turned out.

by Anonymousreply 535October 21, 2018 3:37 AM

R536 Yup, I thought Best Actress was set after the festivals last year but people kept doubting Robbie and Streep. Streep made a bit of sense as The Post ended going nowhere with most awards bodies and she missed both the SAG and BAFTA. But she's Meryl Streep.

I think Close - Colman - Davis - Gaga - McCarthy makes the most sense now, but I wouldn't doubt Yalitza from Roma as a passion pick. If there's a late breaking spoiler, it'll be Emily Blunt.

by Anonymousreply 536October 21, 2018 3:41 AM

Where does it leave Amy Adams this year? In supporting? Vice will play well and the previews were very well received.

by Anonymousreply 537October 21, 2018 3:44 AM

No room for Toni Collette then? too controversial - ?

by Anonymousreply 538October 21, 2018 3:45 AM

Is there any advance buzz on “Widows” or are people predicting Viola because she’s Viola?

by Anonymousreply 539October 21, 2018 3:45 AM

Amy Adams is supporting.

by Anonymousreply 540October 21, 2018 3:48 AM

It was well received at TIFF r540 if not in league with McQueen's previous work. Is said to more of a straight ahead commercial heist/action thriller, and not a straight-on drama as one would expect from him. Viola got the lion's share of praise, but the supporting cast was also strong.

I think it will come down to box office on this one. It may get lost in the shuffle this season with the glut of good niche films.

by Anonymousreply 541October 21, 2018 3:48 AM

The perpetually-overlooked Blunt for a sequel to a Disney movie? I don’t think there’s much chance of that happening, even if she’s good.

“Widows” did the festival circuit and got great reviews. It’s supposed to be a real crowd-pleaser, and we know Davis campaigns hard every time. That’s why people assume she’s in.

by Anonymousreply 542October 21, 2018 3:48 AM

Was the poster meaning Blunt for A Quiet Place, rather than Mary Poppins?

by Anonymousreply 543October 21, 2018 3:50 AM

Tried to watch 'The Wife' fell asleep after the opening scene of Pryce fingering her, or fucking her....oh dear. Shall try again tonight

by Anonymousreply 544October 21, 2018 3:51 AM

Glenn is finger banged? Who the fuck wants to see that?

by Anonymousreply 545October 21, 2018 3:54 AM

R539 Toni would need to be the critics pick and get a huge push from A24 to make it in. That studio is having kind of an off year, and their main push might end up being "First Reformed".

R542 Yeah, I think if Widows were to flop at the box-office, Viola will probably have to sit this one out. It's the exact type of contender that NEEDS to be a hit to be in the race.

R543 Blunt, of the current crop of actresses, is considered to be the most due for her first nomination. She got SAG and BAFTA noms for a film that was panned, so there's definitely respect for her in the industry. MPR is going to be a massive end of the year hit, and Disney is gearing up for a huge campaign for it. I'm not saying she's in, but I wouldn't entirely rule her out.

R544 Mary Poppins Returns

by Anonymousreply 546October 21, 2018 3:54 AM

R547, Blunt should be an Oscar nominee by now, but I can’t see her getting a nomination for reprising an Oscar-winning role that was a huge anomaly in Academy history that wouldn’t be repeated today. And Rob Marshall couldn’t get her even close to a nomination for their last musical, even in an amazingly weak year (Jennifer Aniston almost made it in for a critical flop!), and that was a hit, too.

I’m not saying she can’t get a nomination, but I’d rank her below Kidman, Roberts, Ronan, Collette, the lead from “Roma” and maybe even Elsie Fisher from “Eighth Grade.”

by Anonymousreply 547October 21, 2018 4:34 AM

[quote]can’t see her getting a nomination for reprising an Oscar-winning role that was a huge anomaly in Academy history that wouldn’t be repeated today.

Oh, please. Julie in the original Poppins was hardly an anomaly. She was widely considered to be a shoo-in for a nomination. If there was an anomaly, it was Debbie Reynolds, giving a boisterous but hardly nuanced performance in a mediocre film version of a crappy musical. Sophia Loren got the “we will always love you, foreign goddess” nomination, but she wasn’t going to win again just three years after her Oscar victory. Last left Bancroft and Kim Stanley. Stanley was a “prestige” actress but everyone knew she was nuts and “Seance” was deadly dull. Plus she did an awful English accent. Bancroft did a marginally better accent in Pumpkin Eater, but the moving wasn’t terrible accessible and she, like Loren, was a recent winner. So Andrews made a lot of sense that year. And since no one has actually seen this year’s Poppins, it could very well be worthy of a nomination for Blunt.

by Anonymousreply 548October 21, 2018 5:31 AM

Does LMM rap in the new Poppins? If he does, then it's a no from me.

by Anonymousreply 549October 21, 2018 5:35 AM

That over weight Little Debbie thing over La Roberts and Kidman.??? Doubt it Already saw a cut of Widows. Viola has no chance. Close, Gaga, Kidman, Roberts are all shoo ins. There's a spit left. But Oilivia Colmam is pulling a Courtney Love

by Anonymousreply 550October 21, 2018 5:56 AM

R529 Kidman is not iconic. But she is a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 551October 21, 2018 8:35 AM

Blunt could very easily get a nom for MPR. There’s precedent there. If her performance is instantly loved - she’s a shoo in.

I think this category, more than most, will be full of upsets when the noms are announced, leaving some big names behind. I would put my money on newer talent over older talent here. The Academy is changing.

by Anonymousreply 552October 21, 2018 9:16 AM

One of the “big names left behind” will be Viola Davis, I think. She isn’t Meryl Streep and I don’t see her getting in for a genre flick, no matter how well made. (To anyone who has seen it, is there one of her requisite snot-cry’s in the film?)

Who is the (barely literate) person who keeps proclaiming that Melissa McCarthy won’t get a nomination because she’s fat?

by Anonymousreply 553October 21, 2018 10:53 AM

R554 Well it ain't Kathy Bates who with three nominations and one win proves being 'big' isn't a hindrance to an Oscar. Hope Melissa gets it to spite the haters.

by Anonymousreply 554October 21, 2018 11:33 AM

Exactly, R555.

by Anonymousreply 555October 21, 2018 4:58 PM

I think Collette gets McCarthy’s slot. A lot of the new, younger Academy members will probably want to reward Collette in a tough genre and not McCarthy whose performance is really just a lot of well delivered wisecracks. Collette will be acknowledged in the Critics Awards, most likely as a runner-up. Collette is beloved amongst critics for good reason.

by Anonymousreply 556October 21, 2018 5:40 PM

I don’t see Collette happening. Blunt maybe, if critics love the film (MPR).

by Anonymousreply 557October 21, 2018 5:42 PM

Can You Ever Forgive me opened this weekend in a limited release (5 screens) and grossed $30K per screen, not exactly a rousing start for a film that was supposed to be highly anticipated. Mid-90s was released on 4 screens and more than doubled that PSA.

by Anonymousreply 558October 21, 2018 6:42 PM

R549, I’m not arguing the merits of her win, only that Andrews winning for a movie like “Mary Poppins” is something that almost never happens. She won for a family movie, which happened only a few times before that (Edmund Gwenn, Anne Revere, Spencer Tracy). No actor has won for a movie marketed to children since Andrews over a half century ago, and the last actor to even be nominated for one was James Cromwell for “Babe,” over twenty years ago.

So, yes, Andrews winning was an anomaly.

by Anonymousreply 559October 21, 2018 7:52 PM

[quote]No room for Toni Collette then? too controversial - ?

Too overrated and too silly.

(The movie and her performance in it, not her in general.)

by Anonymousreply 560October 22, 2018 12:49 AM

No interest for the men, this year ?

by Anonymousreply 561October 22, 2018 1:58 AM

R559 I want to see it, but I can't forsee it having any sort of mass appeal whatsoever. And Melissa has been bombing lately.

by Anonymousreply 562October 22, 2018 2:12 AM

Chalamet might eke out a nomination at best, we’ve never really been Cooper fans here and Bale doesn’t have his “American Psycho” physique, so he’s no longer of interest to DL. Even Gosling has kind of hit the wall.

So the men aren’t really a DL priority this year, R562. Unless Rami Malek surprises and we get to complain about Bryan Singer.

by Anonymousreply 563October 22, 2018 2:55 AM

R554 The same dumbass who keeps saying that Roberts and Kidman are happening in lead because they are big stars. He's posted the same shit over a dozen times in this thread.

R559 Mid 90's had a big PTA because Jonah Hill was doing Q&A's at many screenings over the weekend. Those will always help inflate the theater average. Same thing happened with Beautiful Boy last weekend.

by Anonymousreply 564October 22, 2018 3:10 AM

Blunt-Close-Colman-Davis-Gaga.

by Anonymousreply 565October 22, 2018 3:14 AM

Blunt is not happening. Even Collette has a better chance than her.

by Anonymousreply 566October 22, 2018 4:13 AM

Blunt will have to settling for yet another Golden Globe nomination.

by Anonymousreply 567October 22, 2018 4:15 AM

Any card carrying Gay man would know Julie's Mary Poppins Oscar was her consolation for having been passed over for Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle.

by Anonymousreply 568October 22, 2018 4:34 AM

Bale, Cooper, Malek and who else deserves a nomination? I think it might be Cooper's year finally. I'm sure he will be seething if he doesn't get it.

by Anonymousreply 569October 22, 2018 6:25 AM

It's nice that the Best Actress category appears to be stacked for once while Actor is lacking.

R570 Viggo, Gosling, Eastwood, Redford, Hawke, Dafoe

But yes, Cooper is probably winning in a cake walk.

by Anonymousreply 570October 22, 2018 6:39 AM

No bale for Vice? That movie has Oscar bait written all over it.

by Anonymousreply 571October 22, 2018 8:58 AM

Glenn Close won’t be nominated for jack shit.

by Anonymousreply 572October 22, 2018 9:35 AM

Coleman is probably a no-go, likewise Viola Davis. I think the category will have some surprises, or at least surprises from the vantage point of mid-October. I absolutely think it's possibly Blunt could be nominated for Poppins, but I also don't really think it will happen - but not because it's a family film. Because there is going to be too much competition in the leading actress category.

by Anonymousreply 573October 22, 2018 11:07 AM

[quote]No bale for Vice? That movie has Oscar bait written all over it.

Which is why it may not happen. It feels like a desperate move - casting someone twenty years too young for the part and then using makeup and cgi to make him look like he's the right age. It's a stunt, and stunts don't always go over well for the Academy. Plus Bale has an Oscar already, so he's not hurting for Awards love.

by Anonymousreply 574October 22, 2018 11:09 AM

I’m not ruling Blunt out, especially since ASIB is competing in the drama category at the Globes. The GG for BA in a musical/comedy will be between Blunt and Colman. I can see the Foreign Press going either way. With a GG BA win, Blunt just may sneak in if MPR is a hit with critics.

by Anonymousreply 575October 22, 2018 11:27 AM

Blunt won't get in for the simple reason that the Academy still can't believe they gave Julie Andrews an Oscar for the original.

by Anonymousreply 576October 22, 2018 12:09 PM

R575 And on top of that Bale looks far more like Chevy Chase than Dick Cheney and director Adam McKay is a complete hack.

by Anonymousreply 577October 22, 2018 12:58 PM

R578, McKay has done awfully well for himself in terms of box office success and awards recognition despite your single opinion of him. (rolls eyes)

by Anonymousreply 578October 22, 2018 5:19 PM

Just watched The Wife. I don't see Close winning for a good performance in a so-so film.

Don't get all the hype.

by Anonymousreply 580October 22, 2018 7:23 PM

I’m not keen on Adam McKay either. I lived in a town thick with Catholic priest sexual abuse and was very keen to see it but the movie was an energy drain. OK, Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup managed not to disappear into the scenery, but this movie was the one that made me lose interest in Mark Ruffalo’s schtick. I loathe him now. And Rachel McAdams is a massive yawn. Straight male critics love her because they want to marry her.

by Anonymousreply 583October 22, 2018 8:10 PM

Oh my God our lovely Glenn gets finger fucked "in the first scene of The Wife!

Adam McKay had nothing to do with Spotlight.

by Anonymousreply 586October 22, 2018 8:45 PM

Gosh Glenn's daughter is gorgeous

by Anonymousreply 587October 22, 2018 8:49 PM

R584 The film you are referring to is Spotlight and it was directed by Tom McCarthy. Adam McKay directed The Big Short (aka Economies for Dummies), The Other Guys, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights and the Anchorman films. Mainly broad comedies not known for any insight or subtly. Perfect watchable but they don't really fit into the Academy cannon, though The Big Short did come up with a ew head scratching nominations.

by Anonymousreply 588October 22, 2018 9:55 PM

Blunt could emerge late in the game if MPR is a huge hit (which it undoubtedly will be). She’s replacing Julie Andrews FGS! All I’m saying is when the nominees are announced it wouldn’t surprise me if she’s there.

I think Toni Collette can safely make other plans on Oscar night. Maybe watching the broadcast at Glenn Close’s house.

The irony of The Wife is that the distributors withheld a year because they thought the competition was so stiff last year (now I can’t even remember who won - though Ladybird was nominated) and now this year the competition is even more stiff. Even if Close gets nominated she’s more in Albert Nobbs terroritory than Dangerous Liasons. She might as well work the valet parking stand as well and make some money.

And the problem with The Wife is that nobody is talking about Jonathan Pryce’s performance - because it’s that small of a film. If she’s ignored by the critics’ associations, she’s out of it. The Wife is also a film that SAG members won’t have a lot of time for as they notoriously don’t watch anything until the last moment and have no taste anyway. They’ll watch much starrier films first.

Please God, just ignore Rami Malek this awards season, the ugly little rodent. Does nobody else think he looks like a skinny little boy strutting around trying to be Freddie Mercury? Freddie Mercury was a meaty, hairy man! Rami Malek has gotten a free ride for too long - and I hope it ends soon. Will never forgive him for calling our Sally “Gidget” on Graham Norton last Friday night. Appalling behaviour.
