Fibro Gagz can win Best Song.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 14, 2018 8:18 AM |
G all the way. She'll complete her Triple Crown, too.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 14, 2018 8:27 AM |
It should go the truly deserving performance not the most pitiable.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 14, 2018 8:46 AM |
Glenn needs to stick to the small screen. It is kinder to her features.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 14, 2018 8:49 AM |
Close is winning this and Old man will be crowning her.
Also, Madonna, enough, R3.
I don't use a period.

Glenn expects the world to come to her. It's one reason for her professional unpopularity.

More Academy members are guaranteed to see A Star Is Born than The Wife. That alone will help Gaga. If she hopes to win, Glenn better bet on their sympathy.

Glenn is so winning this. Prefix:
Picture: A Star is Born Director: B. Cooper Actress: G. Close Actor: B. Cooper
Best Song: Lady Gaga
Everybody wins. Appropriately.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 14, 2018 10:12 AM |
Glenn...you need to check yourself into a Swiss clinic for a very long stay NOW if you want to win the sympathy vote! (You can get a little work done while so ensconced, so it won't be a total time waste.)
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 14, 2018 10:12 AM |
Gaga has won all the great reviews and A Star Is Born is going win many awards and rule at the box office for months. LG is multi talented and Glenn Close is a loser, pure and simple. She just does not have Gaga's charisma.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 14, 2018 10:15 AM |
Gaga will lose much like she's losing this poll. The gays know the T.
Also, Gaga Mialga better stay in line or she won't win Best Song, either.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 14, 2018 10:23 AM |
Let's see....
Glenn has 3 Tonys, 3 Emmys and 6 Oscar nominations...
Gagz has a meat dress.
Hmm... I wonder who the Academy will crown.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 14, 2018 10:32 AM |
Not to mention, Stefani isn't acting. She's playing herself. Adequately. For all the praise she's gotten, the critics have been careful and clever not to write the word 'Oscar' anywhere near her name in reviews.
Nearly all of them have done so for Glenn in The Wife.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 14, 2018 10:35 AM |
There is one Oscar winning scene where Lady G stares into a mirror and cries, mascara running. She is an emotional mess. It's not something Glen Close can come close to. Glen has always been an ice queen - or wacky masquerading as a man or a transsexual. Close is the one who goes for stunts, Gaga is raw and young and hungry and in March 2019 she will claim her Oscar and entry as Queen of Hollywood.

R31 She will claim her Oscar...

R33. Tell that to Chalamet.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 14, 2018 11:01 AM |
R35 Why? Neither Chalamet nor Oldman were nominated for Best Actress. When it comes to Best Actor, the Academy tends to swing the opposite way. They rarely enjoy awarding young men.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 14, 2018 11:03 AM |
The last act of The Wife is basically Glenn having a 20-30 minute, tear stained emotional breakdown.
Let's not even get into how topical and relevant the story is in the current political and social climates.
Gaga's reward will be her nomination, IF she gets nominated. The Academy might decide to not nominate her for Best Actress since it's a crowded year and she's being thrown a bone - I mean, Oscar for Best Song.
Also, let's hope the story about 5-time rapist/producer of A Star is Born isn't circulating all season. Not a good look.
He's already expected to make millions off of this project he was "very hands on" with.

Gaga's not winning for her first movie role playing a singer. Just because she can cry on cue doesn't make her an actress. One of the songs from Black Panther will best song. She will walk away empty handed.

R44, even if he's been inexplicably nominated in the past for acting, he won't get a directorial nomination on his first time out and his "acting" looks pretty rote even in the trailer.

Best Screenplay

glenn
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 14, 2018 10:54 PM |
Neither. It’ll be Viola Davis for Widows or Olivia Colman for The Favourite (if she isn’t kicked down to supporting status).
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 14, 2018 10:58 PM |
Unfortunately, AMPAS wouldn't award Davis an Oscar in Lead if she deserved it. Nevermind them awarding it to her for such a fluff role.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 14, 2018 11:02 PM |
Glenn, obviously. She's a legend, and after receiving her seventh nomination, she will finally win.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 14, 2018 11:03 PM |
You're all so kind.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 14, 2018 11:04 PM |
I am hoping Glenn wins. The Wife has to be a slow-cooker.
I have doubts about The Academy making Gaga a two-time AMPAS-award winner, especially when Cooper stands a good chance of also winning at least two Oscars on Oscar night. He seems to have Actor in the bag. Producer Oscar is looking good. And director Oscar is in play. But, ASIB is going to be huge, it has WB (they're one of the best), and this can be that rare instance where Hollywood just goes all out for a film.
The landscape is changing. I wouldn't doubt Gaga. And, for my own sanity, I just as well prepare for her winning.
Her most ardent stans are obnoxious and aren't going to make this an easy pill to swallow.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 14, 2018 11:14 PM |
I should also add that I'm assuming ASIB goes C/M at the Globes. If it inexplicably goes Drama, then, forget it, race over, WB not playing around. Gaga winning.
Gaga also has a shot at SAG, especially since the SAG/AFTRA merger. And GG + SAG is an extremely strong combo. But, it's not impenetrable, as Zellweger lost for Chicago, and Julie Christie lost in 2007.
But, I also have a hard time seeing Glenn lose if nominated. I don't think they'll bother with The Wife if Glenn isn't taking this in the end. But, her narrative seems too irresistible. And, this year doesn't seem as competitive as last year. Last year, there were four BP nominees in the Best Actress race (and a PGA-nominated near-miss). Highly unusual. In year's like this, there isn't room for a nomination for a little film that few go to see. But, this year is different. ASIB is obviously going to be huge. And Fox Searchlight has Can You Ever Forgive Me? and The Favourite. And there is Roma. They could all possibly be BP nominees. I suppose Widows and Hereditary are possibilities as well. I guess we'll see.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 14, 2018 11:34 PM |
Gaga Is not winning an Oscar for Best Actress when she's already the frontrunner for Best Song. Some of you bitches act new at this. She MIGHT have had a chance if Best Actress would be her only nod.
The Academy is going to give everyone what they want: Bradley Cooper will win everything for his accomplishments. They will crown the veteran legend who's gone to bat 6 times already for this and they will keep Gaga fans happy and award her Best Song for both her musical and acting efforts.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 14, 2018 11:52 PM |
[R59] Gaga has a legit shot at SAG. That makes her a threat. We don't 100% know how this will end.
But, I agree with you.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 14, 2018 11:56 PM |
r60 I don't think she has a legit shot at SAG at all. Even there, she'll win with everyone else - the SAG Ensemble.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 14, 2018 11:59 PM |
[R61] That's actually a good point. If Cooper and the cast wins, that diminishes Gaga's chances her Oscar chances greatly (even though you were talking about SAG).
SAG has gone four times for film cast and two individuals: American Beauty, Chicago, The Help, and Three Billboards. Yet, each of those films went on to go 2/3 out of each of those categories with Oscar. The lead actress lost three times, and then Three Billboards lost Picture.

Just got back from a screening of "The Wife". It was a 9pm showing and the theater was 3/4 full.
A more apt title for the film would've been "Persuasion". Each character could be accused of a certain amount of persuasion. Glenn Close was exquisite. It was like watching a piece of fine china shatter in slow motion. I'm still haunted by her performance and really can't bring myself to write a review just yet. Also, I liked the film a lot more than I thought I would.
The third act was an amazing homerun for Close. I suspect her performance will continue to haunt me throughout the week. She deserves the Oscar.

I think the thing that bothers me most about Glenn Close is all this insistence that she should get the award because "shes' due." I guess this is because she's been nominated so many times not because of a bunch of amazing performances. (But I really don't care how people are justifying this.)
Her PR team (and I'm assuming Close as well) is very insistent that she get the award. Very. I'm so turned of to all the pushy PR people I sincerely hope she tanks. I haven't seen her movie and I'm sure she is good but really - who cares.

R107 Lange does more in the first 15 minutes of "Blue Sky" (that breakdown, though) than your fave has in her entire career.

There is something wrong with you if you hate Glenn Close.
Scared she'll achieve the Triple Crown before your faves?
by Anonymous | reply 114 | September 15, 2018 5:43 AM |
by Anonymous | reply 115 | September 15, 2018 5:45 AM |
But why does that bother you, R109? For this specific instance or does any "career" award bother you? For myself, I nearly always feel that the awards should be on merit alone, but that's not the world in which we live. If you're going to award someone for a career, then you'd be hard pressed to find anyone currently more deserving than Close, who absolutely should have won on merit for Dangerous Liaisons and was definitely more deserving than the actresses who won in her categories in 1982 and 1987.
It's people like Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio and Julianne Moore (and the burgeoning push for Amy Adams) winning for career which irritates the shit out of me. Adams was a complete unknown 12 years ago. That's not a career. Julianne Moore has given a few good performances, and should have won for Boogie Nights, but not everyone can have an Oscar and it would not have been a travesty had Moore gone to her grave without an Oscar. Travesties like that are Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift, Gena Rowlands, Kathleen Turner, Jennifer Jason Leigh, etc.
Close has given consistently wonderful performances in film for 35 years (well, except for Albert Nobbs, in which she deserved a Razzie). Those kinds of "career achievement" awards are few and far between. The last I can think of who deserved the one he got was Paul Newman for The Color of Money and maybe Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart (which was unwatchable, but Bridges gave a lot of award worthy performances in his career).
While I have a feeling Close's performance in The Wife (as well as the movie itself) are totally overrated and not that impressive, it would be really tough to deny her the award this year.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | September 15, 2018 5:46 AM |

Yes, dear, that's the problem. She chews her way through the scenery so quickly, she's already camp by the time the latecomers are seated. Horrible movie, horrible performance.

I was looking at what Glenn Close has done, I had only really remembered her from Fatal Attraction. Which she was amazing in. I was quite surprised to see she has done mostly TV work for nearly two decades since. I don't really count the 101 Dalmation movies. I thought she had a long movie career I hadn't really seen but that is not really the case.

R117 She plays a bi-polar nymphomaniac. What did you expect, tea and biscuits? lol.
Her win for "Blue Sky" is still one of my favorites EVER. Everything pointed to her not winning until she won LA, renowned for being picky and for awarding left field choices. Then the Globes followed and she was undeniable. She beat an "overdue" veteran (Sarandon), the ingenue of the moment, a brit and Nell. It was glorious!

The ONLY reason she won the Oscar was there was no one else in the category to give it to. You know it, I know it, we all know it. That category was from hunger that year. Besides Lange, Sarandon, Ryder and Foster were all ridiculous performances to honor. Hell, they were even seriously considering Streep for The River Wild and MacLaine for Guarding Tess.

[quote] I was quite surprised to see she has done mostly TV work for nearly two decades since. I don't really count the 101 Dalmation movies. I thought she had a long movie career I hadn't really seen but that is not really the case.
In the 20 years since 101 Dalmatians, Glenn Close has made 24 theatrical films not counting animated movies, cameos or the sequel to Dalmatians. Plus 15 theatrical films prior to that.

R122 Er, Jagged Edge, The World According to Garp, The Natural. She was stunning in Heights and in that movie she starred with Meryl in.
Also, I can watch "In the Gloaming" on a loop. Such an underrated little gem (directed by Chris Reeves).

They wanted to give it to Lange. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. The fact that she won LA was so perfect. They can be soo snooty sometimes. THAT's how much they oved The Lange.

Of course all the PR trolls are the lowest people in the office. Actually they are probably temps. They're told to respond to every negative post and and "just say something" and that's pretty much what they are doing. They just bathering away.
But on balance the Tom Cruise PR trolls were worse. The group that showed up for his last movie were really untalented. I think they must have been paid in sandwiches ...

I would say that Close has hit the top of her salary potential and an Oscar would not help raise it. Everyone knows who Glenn Close is, she's been a star for 35 years. Attaching her would make no difference to the prestige of a project whether or not she had an Oscar. For someone like Octavia Spencer or Chris Cooper- yes. Glenn, no.
Also, the person yammering on about Glenn and her 2nd husband... She met him AFTER being hired for Garp and they married two years later. But nice try.

The Wife has already stalled at the box office. It expanded to more than 500 screens this weekend and took in a paltry $2200 per screen. They'll probably do one more expansion next week where it will have an even more anemic PSA and then it will start dropping screens, maybe adding other markets, but unless Close gets a nomination and the film is re-released, this thing is on its last gasps.

I think it's entirely possible Glenn won't even be nominated. And if she is, she won't win. The Academy is very aware that they have a problem being considered vital to current American culture, especially with younger people. If "A Star is Born" opens to the kind of raves it's gotten so far, it will be a hard one to beat. Meanwhile, as has been pointed out, Glenn's little effort is sinking, even with decent reviews. No one cares about "The Wife." It's a non-starter when it comes to Oscar.
"The Favourite" so far has excellent reviews, but Colman has no hope in Best Actress. If they can put her in supporting, she'll probably win.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | September 17, 2018 9:29 AM |
I honestly don't understand people who suspect either Glenn or Gaga won't be nominated. They're the two frontrunners. Easy nominations.

by Anonymous | reply 200 | September 17, 2018 9:38 AM |
Yes, but being the frontrunner as early as September can backfire sometimes, r199. And nothing can set off a "backfire" situation like bombing at the box office, which "The Wife" seems to be doing.
by Anonymous | reply 201 | September 17, 2018 9:40 AM |
Backfiring can definitely cost these actresses the win, but I don't think it'll affect their chances at a mere nomination. There's way too much positive buzz surrounding these performances, and they're exactly the types of performances the Academy salivates over, and oftentimes awards. I don't think a nomination is so outlandish for these two actresses.
I'll give you Colman. She doesn't have the security that Close or Gaga has. I still think she'll get nominated in one of those Carey Mulligan/Imelda Staunton spots.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | September 17, 2018 9:51 AM |

Gaga's PR team will go full throttle after ASIB is released. She is going to be on everything like Good Morning America to Jimmy Fallon. Glenn will not get those invites. Sad but true. Gaga is the present and future and Glenn is an old lady who looks older than she is. A few bleeding hearts may pine for Glenn....but they could die before they can cast a ballot for her.
Poor Glenn.

The oscars don't mean jack shit anymore, fucking mcbongo has an oscar of all people, lady haha getting an oscar for a sure to be overhyped awful performance would be sad, the academy wants to appear hip yet gaga hasn't been cool since 2011.

I have seen both performance on the big screen. I am afraid that "The Wife" will not play very well on the small screen (no matter how large it might be). It might feel like a TV movie of the week, a good one. I think LG's performance will feel bigger even on the small screen.
I force myself to see movies on the big screen because I know that there are movies that I would never finish on the small screen. I am pretty sure that I might not have finished "The Wife." And I agree that Close's third act is perfection. But LG will win Best Song, and I do not think she will get Best Actress..or will she.

I anticipate a viscous attack on Gaga from Glenn Close's fanbase. Gaga hold your head high and remember your performance for months was seen as the front runner.
