Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. And get out the oversized drink shakers, Mrs Robinson
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 1, 2018 12:05 AM |
Dinner party? How about Claudine Longet? Or some ye-ye girls like France Gall, Arlette Zola, Marie Philippe?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 1, 2018 12:07 AM |
R5 and 11 are pop music, not dinner party/lounge music.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 1, 2018 12:11 AM |
This the godfather of mid-60s lounge records. Brasil 66 is also an excellent choice.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 1, 2018 12:13 AM |

Torrent or borrow from the library some Ultra-Lounge compilation CDs. They're great for 1960s dinner parties.

Dusty Springfield - pick midtempo songs like I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face or Don't Let Me Lose This Dream
Jackie and Roy

Peggy Lee from late 60s would have a fun, kicky vibe

Buy this before you have another '60s dinner party. Just keep it on "repeat, all."

When I moved to New York in the early 1970s, Dietrich in Rio, with conductor/accompanist Burt Bachrach was still popular.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | September 1, 2018 7:57 AM |
One of my fave songs of all time, the late great Antonio Carlos Jobim & Elis Regina - Águas De Março (Waters Of March).
Elis died quite young of a drug overdose. I think she was only 16 or 17 when she recorded this with Jobim!
by Anonymous | reply 81 | September 1, 2018 8:12 AM |
Tom and Elis performing the song.
I had the honor of seeing Tom Jobim perform at one of Sting's Rainforest Benefit, it was a few years before he passed away. What a great show of mostly Brazilian music. Hearing this live was amazing, an actual religious experience!

In 1968, The Musical Heritage Society, a minor classical label, released a French recording of the forgotten Canon of Pachebel. It was background music for every dinner party and, stoned on pot, we all asked "What is that?"
by Anonymous | reply 95 | September 1, 2018 9:10 AM |
Never knew there were words - must have been added later.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | September 1, 2018 9:10 AM |
I had an album with Pachelbel's Canon and Albinoni's Adagio, r95, both conducted by Karajan. That was "dinner music."
by Anonymous | reply 98 | September 1, 2018 9:12 AM |
Thanks, r98.
This is the version released by The Musical Heritage Society in 1968. It is no longer considered "authentic" or "correct" but it is the version that put the then forgotten music on the map and you heard it everywhere. Good pot helped.

What are you trying to accomplish with this "dinner music" OP? Is it some type of atmosphere or just background. I would imagine if it is just background you wouldn't want singing.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | September 1, 2018 2:01 PM |
Most of us have suggested music without words, r114.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | September 1, 2018 2:03 PM |
OP, R19 had it, mic drop right there.
No pop music while serving.
But something French during Manhattans before dinner, maybe.

Might be a tossup R115.

The tunes are still indelibly engraved in my mind and SCREAM 1960s.

Hey R76 - Sorry for the repeat; let’s just say great minds think alike! Seriously, I’m surprised I didn’t become bilingual in “cocktail French” at the age of 5 from having to listen to that album about 50 million times . . .

Another vote for the Ultra Lounge series. They're all on Spotify and there are playlists that include all of them. Just hit shuffle.
Also, this YouTube channel has a bunch of Italian jazz-pop tunes from the sixties.

Chris Montez bossa nova pop from the 60s also on A&M - The More I see You & Time after Time

STFU, r161. Anyone who wants to have a 1960s dinner party is who cares. You can't play music that hasn't been made yet, whereas you can play '60s music at a '70s party.
Not anal. Not bitchy. Just right. (I'll grant you annoying.)

I also mentioned Jobim, then was blasted because his most famous song was out in the 1970s. I guess being 'futuristic' wouldn't work at some lame 1960s themed party.
