Their best album is POD.

Ms Kim Deal has a lot of talent, mostly thrown away on drugs.

Tanya Donelly said that most of the songs from her first Belly album were supposed to be Breeders songs.

Their cover of Wicked Little Town is brilliant. Also Kim Deal's video/song Are You Mine? which is about her mom not recognizing her. So heartbreakingly beautiful and sad.

Kim Deal said in an interview in Spin that she met Chrissie Hynde when she was drunk in a bar on the Lower East Side in NYC. Chrissie grabbed her boob and kept it there. Kim said maybe she wanted to have a boob-off.

I miss bands like The Breeders and Belly. They had a sweet, unpretentious simplicity but they weren't icky-cute like so many indie bands now.
Always loved this Belly song. Their 2nd album was criminally underrated.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 20, 2018 7:59 AM |
Lot of fun live. The sisters are so warm and chill. Makes you feel like you’re hanging with friends. i tend to think that was Kim’s most important contribution to the Pixies too. New album is good and they’re touring it.

They can blast out an instrumental jam with no vocals worth listening to
by Anonymous | reply 68 | October 21, 2018 6:22 AM |
R49, because Belly is a pop band and Breeders are an actual band. (I am aware that Donelly played on POD and co-wrote a song or two.)

R71 The music may be more accessible and pop sounding, but they're still alternative.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 21, 2018 6:43 AM |
I think it's posted earlier but Belly's first album are Tanya's songs originally intended for the Breeders
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 21, 2018 6:44 AM |
I’ve avoided this thread because this is my favorite band and I know everything about them, and Kim Deal is a genius. What would the cunts of Datalounge say about the Breeders? Fortunately, it’s been mostly positive and accurate. Thank you, DL.
I however have to agree that Belly should not be mentioned in the same breath as the Breeders. It’s stunning to me to think of Tanya Donnelly’s lead guitar contributions to this band and Throwing Muses and try to reconcile all that with the crushing dullness of her own band’s music (as well as her solo stuff). Really normal, peppy, sweet, nothing musically interesting or twisted or particularly heavy. Very different from the Breeders and the Muses. So, Tanya gets a “no”’vote from me. I like her on Pod and Safari, though. Genius guitar lines.
[quote]Saw them recently. At the end of Saints, Kim and Kelley took off their wigs and threw them up into the air.
To the person who asked if this really happened: no, it didn’t. They don’t wear wigs. WTF
Anyone who saw them around Halloween on their current tour— in support of their excellent and very well received new album All Nerve— was treated to their excellent cover of the Halloween (1978) theme song. There are videos of it on YouTube.

R75 Has Kim had a facelift? She looks really good these days, but it might be weight loss.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 29, 2018 6:21 AM |
[quote]Ms Kim Deal has a lot of talent, mostly thrown away on drugs
Kim definitely did a lot of drugs including heroin and other opiates up until the early 2000s, but I don’t think you can say her talent was “mostly thrown away”. She’s one of a minuscule number of great alternative rock musicians from the Nineties whose output has never waivered in quality, ever. She drove her bandmates NUTS, and it led to serious strife in the Pixies, but that comes as much from her mental illnesses as her past drug use.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 29, 2018 6:23 AM |
R75 Contrast Phil Collins' work with Genesis and his solo works. It's not too hard to fathom Tanya making lighter music on her own and with her own band. Belly is just as good on their own terms.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | November 29, 2018 6:23 AM |
No, R76, neither Deal sister has ever had any “work” done and never would. They are salt of the earth, as genuine as people can be. If you see Kim’s face up close nowadays, she looks like she’s in her late 50s. Plenty of wrinkles now, but still gorgeous. It’s their hillbilly genes. Her face might seem more taut than Kelley’s, but that’s because Kim has been heavier than Kelley since the mid 00s. People with a little extra meat always have younger looking faces.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | November 29, 2018 6:25 AM |
R78, that’s a good analogy.
Donnelly might be a good songwriter, but the stuff she’s done is pretty trifling compared to what Kim has done, in my opinion. So I would never say they’re just as good. But I prefer my music to be nasty, ugly sounding, minimalist, metal and punk influenced... and Donnelly’s just kind of bland jangly pop now. To each his own.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | November 29, 2018 6:27 AM |
R77 I thought Kim was just into booze, cigarettes, and weed? It was Kelley who got busted for heroin, which broke up the band, forcing Kim to turn the "Last Splash" followup into The Amps record(and then The Amps became addicts themselves, leaving Kim high and dry).
by Anonymous | reply 81 | November 29, 2018 6:30 AM |
R79 I saw them up close. Kim could still pass for late 40s/early 50s, she's grown her hair out and lost a lot of weight. Kelley looks her age, but considering all she's been through, looks very good for it.
Plus their voices sound the same, although at first they performed "Saints" a half step down before returning to the original key.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | November 29, 2018 6:33 AM |
Kim’s known for having been a major pot and alcohol addict, but yes she was into heroin, too. Really all drugs. It was just that she didn’t have a public episode like Kelley’s drug bust, so that was mostly kept under wraps. But she was very open in early Breeders and later Amps interviews about how much she loved heroin, how it was the greatest high. She talked about how she knew how to switch between drugs so as to not become addicted to any one in particular... kind of scary, huh? Thank god she never OD’d. Anyway, she went to rehab in 2003, has been clean ever since... and even quit smoking a few years after that.
Many of the Breeders songs are about various drugs, including heroin. The Amps songs are often about Kelley’s drug use (“Pacer,” “She’s A Girl”).
by Anonymous | reply 83 | November 29, 2018 6:35 AM |
R82, Kim has actually been through much worse than Kelley, believe me!
by Anonymous | reply 84 | November 29, 2018 6:36 AM |
I have to say, it’s a shame their music isn’t more the sort of thing the average DLer would be into, because they are extremely hilarious people and should be “DL faves” (or would they be DL icons?). People often say they should do their own podcast. The shorthand they speak to each other, the sarcasm, bone dry humor... they’re a riot. It comes out a lot when they banter onstage, but I always laugh my ass off when I hear an audio interview with them. Total badasses.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | November 29, 2018 6:39 AM |
R75 Hi, I was the one who made this wig comment. It was a joke about aging rock stars, that's all. Kelley styles her hair sometimes that it looks like a wig. I actually suggested to Josephine on Twitter that they film a video for an "All Wave" song, where at the end they go back stage and Kim and Kelley take off their wigs showing grey hair. They look at Josephine and she goes "Oh, the irony".

I would see gorgeous-babe Belly guitarist Tom Gorman (at right, below) at my favorite bar in the East Village a few years ago, almost every weekend.

Then the Belly reunion was announced, and he vanished.

R84 Wouldn't surprise me at all. She talk about quitting drinking and then smoking on Maron's podcast. She then said that had a back problem and got temporarily hooked on painkillers. She's been clean for over a decade, since "Mountain Battles" came out.

Fun fact (from the Breeders fanatic above), Kelley’s very popular scarves that she sells on her website (started out around $60, now $85 each, they always sell out almost immediately) each have a name. Kim names almost all of them. It’s fun to look through the scarves and consider the names of each one, and make the connection in your mind, “ohhhh, I get it!” Kim’s sense of humor comes through loud and clear in them, as well as her way with words. The Breeders/Amps have always had great song titles.
Some of the recent scarves are at this link, but I don’t know if there’s an archive for older scarves.

And while we’re on the subject of Kelley’s projects, her duo with Mike Montgomery (who engineered most of the latest Breeders LP), called R. Ring, is actually really great. Much better than anything she did in the past, as far as I can remember. (I was never a fan of the Kelley Deal 6000.)
Check out their album ‘Ignite The Rest’.

I saw Kelley play at the Roxy in Hollywood when she toured with Kelley Deal 6000. She was very complimentary about the opening band, Stanford Prison Experiment, and asked midway through the show for the members to come up on stage for a song. After realizing they had left, she seemed genuinely surprised they weren't there, and made jokes about it for the rest of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | December 2, 2018 4:51 AM |
R103 Completely bad form, you're supposed to stay for the main act.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | December 2, 2018 4:58 AM |
That's a major mistake too since they obviously weren't expecting Kelley to call for them onstage. I doubt she would ask them to open again since she'd be wondering if they would split as soon as they finished.

R108 Wig guy here, what did you think of my music video idea? Think they'd do it?
by Anonymous | reply 111 | December 3, 2018 6:38 AM |
No, R111, I don’t.
R109, Kim is either single or she’s dating her best friend Kyle, who is also their merch guy, and was their social media operator (he still is for the Kim Deal Music Facebook account). He’s been hanging out with Kim for at least 10 years and has helped her with her basement studio setup and various photo/video things associated with her solo and Breeders releases.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | December 3, 2018 9:34 PM |
What mental illnesses does Kim have? She just seems quirky.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | December 3, 2018 9:41 PM |
The emotional imbalance kind, R113. Charles Thompson’s bitchy wife wrote a Facebook note in 2013 when the Pixies officially announced Kim had quit the band, saying “It’s about time!” and stated it was a relief for the rest of the band to finally be unshackled. Really, what happened was Kim is obsessed with quality control and was very very picky about what the Pixies would or wouldn’t do—she was the reason they didn’t put out new music for so long even after reforming. I don’t think Kim liked the new songs or the way Charles Thompson was willing to let their producer Gil Norton lead them around by the nose, and I imagine they were set to record digitally, too, which Kim was and still is opposed to. But anyway, his wife said that Kim is “challenged”, referring to mental illness, and said she exacerbated it with drinking and drugging over the years, making her really hard to work with.
Which itself lines up with an interview Breeders gave in 1990, where Kim discussed the meanings of some Pod songs. “Doe”—often thought by fans to be a song about a blow job (it’s not)—is about a lithium overdose Kim had when she was a teenager. I think she said she was diagnosed as manic depressive, and just for fun, she and a guy she was hanging out with took a heavy dose of lithium, because apparently you can trip on it? Or she heard you could? That’s what was “so salty”.
There was also an Australian radio interview after the album Mountain Battles, where the interviewer asked Kim and Kelley what the title meant, wondering if it referred to... Kelley interjected: “her assortment of mental illnesses?” Then Kelley guffawed, Kim stayed silent, and Kelley started to apologize to Kim. So I think it’s something Kim basically has under control but doesn’t like to talk about (there are a lot of subjects she doesn’t like to talk about, because she sees them as getting in the way of the music—it’s the same reason she never indulged anyone who wanted to frame her as a Woman In Rock).
Sorry for the longwinded response.

I like the Deal sisters and most of what they've done.
I'm glad they seem to have stuck to a level of fame they feel comfortable with.....
One of the artists I follow is friends with them and has done some of their graphic work, I think. There's a whole Cincinnati scene that interacts with them.

Kim would slam Kelley during interviews when she was touring with the Amps. She made a lot of druggy references, saying that Kelley had to stay in Ohio because her dealer was there. I was surprised to find out later that Kim was doing a lot of coke and other drugs into the 2000s.

I know, R125, I didn’t want to post his full name because Kim said onstage on their current tour that he hates it when she identifies him by his full name to the audience. So now she calls him “Kyle, from the basements of Dayton, Ohio”.

If anyone’s curious, you can see Kyle sitting on the floor for this NPR Tiny Deal Concert; he’s the “human cymbal” that Jim “plays” during the song MetaGoth. He’s cute!
It’s also a really great 3-song set. One of the best live renditions of fan favorite Off You. I think Mike Montgomery (recording engineer and Kelley’s bandmate) plays lead guitar on that song here. (I haven’t watched it since it was posted last April so I can’t remember)

Will they make a new album soon? Or will they take another long break? With all the energy they have right now, they could really crush it.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | December 4, 2018 6:16 AM |
In the shade, in the shade.

Who are the wig wearers in the alt rock scene?
by Anonymous | reply 138 | December 4, 2018 11:47 PM |
There are none, R138. Alt rock keeps it real. I mean, come on.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | December 5, 2018 1:18 AM |
R138 and R139 Tori Amos would like a word with you.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | December 5, 2018 1:21 AM |
Tori Amos is not “rock” by any stretch of the imagination. I would also not say that she’s ever kept it real at any point in her career.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | December 5, 2018 1:33 AM |
R141 She was a mainstay on Alternative radio in the 90s, maybe not rock, but certainly Alternative.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | December 5, 2018 1:38 AM |
Definitely Alternative, because she’s weird as fuck and not remotely mainstream, but not alt-rock. Now please let’s not mention her again.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | December 5, 2018 2:02 AM |
Tori may have a weave but a full wig? Nah.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | December 5, 2018 3:11 AM |
R144 Maybe a weave now, but she was certainly wearing full wigs in recent years.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | December 5, 2018 3:17 AM |
R146 Face lift, brow lift, nose job, and veneers/dentures. When "The Beekeeper" came out, she showed off her new brow lift.

I wish more people knew his work. He's great.

And he definitely knows how to frame a photograph, R148. His Flickr account and his “photo a day” journal on his website are great. He makes Ohio look gorgeous.

I'd love to go out with either sister, but definitely Kim. I'm 31, but so what? They have such youthful vibes.

“I just had a physical reaction to something that I thought bad music. I was walking around in the shopping mall today, and this Madonna song came on and I was just like ‘good God have mercy!’ She’s got some songs in her which are so fucking bad. And I swear to god, if I could actually compose and could write music and stuff, I could probably pick out like a phrygian scale or something. It’s weird man. It makes me sad to hear that.”

by Anonymous | reply 154 | December 8, 2018 3:53 AM |
They just wrapped up their Australia/New Zealand tour.

I've been listening to an old band that I liked a lot in the mid 80's, Big Black, whose founder, Steve Albini, had apparently worked with Kim Deal on several Breeders albums. Big Black is still awesome after 30 years. Check out their song "Kerosene" on Youtube.

by Anonymous | reply 165 | December 27, 2018 3:11 AM |
R163, you sound really out of the loop! Yes, we know Albini is a legend. He also has a newer band Shellac that is currently active, and yes he is very close friends with Kim Deal and has worked with her fairly consistently since 1988. There are only a few recordings of hers that he hasn’t engineered at least partially.
He also famously recorded Nirvana’s In Utero and PJ Harvey’s Rid Of Me. He has the best “room sound” and drum sound in the world of rock music engineering. He didn’t have anything to do with the Breeders’ Last Splash though.

by Anonymous | reply 171 | January 18, 2019 3:56 AM |
Yeah, more gossip please! Have been obsessed with this band again since they rebooted the old line-up. Is it really possible that they're only 25 percent gay? If so I'm never trusting my gaydar again.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | January 18, 2019 10:37 PM |
R172 Yep, only Jo Wiggs is gay.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | January 18, 2019 10:39 PM |
If every member of the band was gay, they would have gotten more blowback because of their name.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | January 19, 2019 5:43 PM |
So, what do Kim and Kelley think about wigs?
by Anonymous | reply 175 | January 19, 2019 9:01 PM |
I reckon they don’t think about them at all, R175. No offense, but are you autistic?
by Anonymous | reply 176 | January 20, 2019 5:52 AM |
R176 Not at all, I just thought because they are so quirky and witty, they'd have an opinion on them.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | January 20, 2019 5:54 AM |
R178 You're very protective of the sisters. Are you related to them?

Do you have a wig fetish, R179? That's a lot of non-contextual wig talk.

See R85, yes I love women in wigs, but it wasn't non contextual.

Kim’s an atheist, too, of course. That’s what the song “Divine Hammer” is about.

by Anonymous | reply 202 | June 10, 2019 8:49 PM |
R193, no they never edited that word out. I’ve never heard that word edited out of that song no matter who was playing it.
Which is odd, because Tom Petty’s songs Mary Jane’s Last Dance and You Don’t Know How It Feels both have references to pot that got muted or scrambled when played on MTV.

The hunky drummer could still be a hot daddy (alluding to their appearance on the NPR gig from last year or so) if he lost just a bit of weight.
And I LOVE the Breeders. Saints was one of my favorite songs when I was in high school.

Tanya Donelly covers the Pixies "Here Comes Your Man"
by Anonymous | reply 247 | May 7, 2020 1:08 AM |
R9 Tanya Donnelly didn't play on Last Splash. She played on Pod and her guitar playing is one of the reasons why that album is so much better than the albums that followed. Last Splash is good, but too poppy...at least the three singles are. They get pretty tiring pretty quick. Especially Cannonball
by Anonymous | reply 248 | January 4, 2021 12:22 AM |
When it comes to The Breeders, I only know "Cannonball", "Safari" and "Divine Hammer", all of which I like, particularly "Safari". I should really look into them more.
Someone did a really good mashup of "Cannonball" with "Ray of Light", which I enjoy listening to a lot.

by Anonymous | reply 250 | January 4, 2021 12:34 AM |
Kim claims cannonball was about the Marquis De Sade but I think it was about Frank Black and the pixies breaking up.
Kim: I've just never connected music with books. Wait, that's not entirely true. "Cannonball" was inspired by the writings of the Marquis de Sade.
Q: What? "I'll be the bong in your reggae song" was inspired by de Sade?
Kim: Well, not that line specifically. But the message of the song as a whole was making fun of de Sade and his libertarian views that if he was better off than someone, then they were just fodder for him. Playthings. It was saying,"Come on, life's not a contest."
Q: So you're pretty much anti-de Sade.
Kim: Well, I don't know. Later on I found out he used to suck the snot out of people's noses, and I thought that pretty much ruled.
