Nonsense.
These Aretha threads have been too gay for Christmas.
Gold: 60s
Rest is mostly tacky trash.

I never liked her much. But if you're doing this list, how could you leave out "Until You Come Back To Me"?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 20, 2018 1:31 AM |
So, I'll ask again: did Aretha really believe in the jesus biz, afterlife and all the church BS? She seemed too intelligent for this.

MMPH! Well R5, there are a great many who would find your question offensive. Who are you to judge what someone chooses to believe? But, to answer your question; Aretha Franklin was very religious. She's a preacher's daughter and it might be helpful for you to read up on her father, the Rev CL Franklin, and the legacy that he left behind.
But, she was a believer of her own will. You can hear the differences and power in her voice when she sang a standard gospel song versus any other type of music. In fact, of all of her albums, her best selling album was her "Amazing Grace" album.
The linked clip is a nice reflection on her life. She visits her church and childhood home.

Aretha's biggest hits:
1. I Knew You Were Waiting For Me - duet with George Michael, No. 1 for 2 weeks 1987
2. Respect - No. 1 for two weeks in 1967
3, Until You Come Back to Me - No. 3 in 1974
4. Freeway of Love - No. 3, in 1985
5, Chain of Fools - No. 2 in 1968

Natural Woman is the perfect match of songwriter and singer. Though she had a really strong catalog, this one stands out.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 21, 2018 10:01 PM |
Her Atlantic material from the ‘60s was her high-water mark, but the ‘70s and ‘80s work was hardly trash. Until You Come Back to Me, Angel, I’m in Love, and Something He Can He Can Feel from the ‘70s; and United Together, Come to Me, and Another Night from the ‘80s are all stellar.

[quote]Oh dear, no will or trust? This is insane!
In my opinion, if this is true she's trying to send a message. I mean... okay, maybe she did not have the best of relationships with her sons. Maybe she was of the attitude that "This was my money and my accomplishments and they should make their own." On and on... but to leave no provisions for her grandchildren? To establish no type of foundation to train younger people to keep her legacy going? This makes no sense to me.

If you really listen to the song, it is peak Aretha.....she should have visited the bluesy style more often.....

From the Daily News
The gossip site claims court documents reveal Franklin died inestate, which means she never penned a will divvying up her hard-earned cash.
Franklin died at her home in Detroit, and by Michigan law, her estate will be equally split between her four children: Clarence, 63, Edward, 61, Ted, 54, and Kecalf, 48.
The gossip outlet notes that the “Respect” singer had a son, Clarence, who has special needs and will require financial support for the rest of his life.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 22, 2018 12:11 AM |
How could Aretha do this? All kinds of relatives and con jobs can come out of the closet to lay claim to a piece of her estate.
This is going to be a nightmare for the family. Plus there are taxes and other fees attached when a trust is not in place. Very bad estate planning here. Terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 22, 2018 12:32 AM |
R25, this is exactly what happened to Prince's estate. I suppose I could understand what Prince did -- he was still middle-aged, he thought he would live forever, etc. But Aretha knew she was dying, she had time to prepare. It's a dreadful thing to do to your family.

I don't know the intestate succession rules in Michigan, but if they are like most of the states in the U.S., her estate will go to her issue: Her children. I'm assuming she didn't have any legal spouse at the time of death.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 22, 2018 1:58 AM |
We need to pay tribute to two artists that Aretha said had a great influence on her: Clara Ward and Dinah Washington. There are two great videos of Clara Ward. In this one, the Clara Ward singers sing to the whitest whitebread audience ever.
In the second video, the Clara Ward singers have the greatest wigs ever.

The REMAINDER of her estate will go to her children. The estate has to go through probate and all of her creditors must be paid as well as legal fees and administrative costs before her heirs get a cent.

"Think" isn't on OP's poll.
The poll is a false contest; useless and irrelevant.

I really like this. It's yet another a remake of a song by a female singer that she released not long after the original. And made it better.
The line "I'll stage a ballet on a tabletop" is gold.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 22, 2018 5:19 AM |
^ Also: "We'll blow a genie from a cigarette." Gold.

Until You Come Back To Me is my favorite. But Natural Woman and Respect are probably her greatest and best known hits.

R44, but the estate will have to pay a huge amount of federal and state taxes. (Prince's estate was dramatically reduced for this reason). Those taxes could have been substantially reduced by competent estate planning.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 23, 2018 1:18 AM |
She died without a will. I find that overwhelmingly stupid. What is it with these rich pop and rock stars (Franklin, Prince, Kurt Cobain) who have huge estates not making wills? Do they think they'll live forever? Don't they care what will happen to their money and property? I just don't get how they can be so irresponsible considering how much money and property is at stake.

Aretha Franklin’s long history of legendary feuds and shady moments
ARETHA Franklin had a fierce reputation for public feuds and shady remarks about many of music’s biggest names: Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Mariah Carey among her targets.

-Prince
-Ray Charles
-Jimmi Hendrix
-Whitney Houston
-Elvis
-Paul McCartney
-David Bowie
3 of them I can't name. The one in the hat might be a BAD Michael Jackson. And the other Black character MIGHT be Bo Diddley. And the other one on the other side of Prince MIGHT be Kurt Cobain...

Legitimate question. Not trying to stir up any thing:
I'm looking at the photos of the long line of mourners waiting to show their respect walking by the coffin. I don't see one white person. I'm a white Euro gay. Would I be welcome in this line or is it understood that this would not be appropriate?
