Would you say Europeans are less racist than Americans are?

Ten years ago the obvious answer would be "Yes, of course" but the recent migrant crisis has shown they have lots of bigots over there too (and no, I don't consider everyone who objects to the influx of Africans to Europe to be a bigot, but many of them happen to be shameless racists). So are they really less racist or were they just unable to practice it so far, since there aren't that many colored people living over there.

Americans are the least racist people you've ever met. They are however, fiercely protective of their culture and way of life. If you want to go there, you be welcomed for sharing your food, your art, and your fashion regardless of your skin color, but you need to learn to speak English, work hard to save and live, don't expect handouts if your life goes to hell beyond physical disability or old age, and keep your mouth shut about guns if you don't like them.

You are British or you're not. French or not-French, Swedish or not-Swedish.

It wasn't always so, but the rise of the nation-state in the 1800s lead to ethnic cleansing of sorts in the 1900s as people of different ethnicities were moved to be in the same nation as others of that ethnicity. So that say, Hungarians who found themselves in Romania were sent to Hungary, Germans in Poland, etc.

And those that are reflect the same basic “US” v “THEM” ethnic bias.

Look at Russia, Yugoslavia (just as disastrous as blacks when it comes to their mentalities) and Switzerland and Spain (proud linguistic/regionalistic) mindsets.

Americans were duped into singing some Kumbaya melting pot crap that has always been shallow.

Russians, Balkan Countries, Czechs, Slovaks, Austrians, Spanish, Greeks, Italians, Polish, Scandinavians, British, Swiss, French, and Germans.

I would say that the Germans are currently the most open-minded, as long as their economy holds.

I'm glad to hear that R33.

by Anonymousreply 34August 19, 2018 10:19 PM

As an American Black, I once believed that Europeans were less racist than Americans. This was due to their friendliness towards to me while living there (I was in Spain in the late 80s and early 90s). I later realized that they distinguished between me and the African immigrants, whom many of them dislike and discriminate against.

I was favored because I was American, and therefore "civilized" in culture. I was also considered "not black-looking" to them, because of my comparatively lighter complexion (I'm the color of actor Shemar Moore). So basically, they can be just as racist as White Americans, but the perceptions and criteria they base it on are different.

I'll give another comparison: South Asians are much more liked in the United States than in the United Kingdom, because Americans perceive them more positively than do the British.

by Anonymousreply 35August 19, 2018 10:40 PM

Racism is the defining paradigm for American society, though obviously not the only. But being a multiracial society it does not have the blind racism of less heterogenous countries like Japan or Russia.

by Anonymousreply 39August 19, 2018 10:58 PM

Japan is horribly racist against EVERYONE.

Anyone not Japanese is just.... not.

After that, they rank people based on race.

Americans are #1, then British, then other Europeans, other Asians, South Americans, and Africans at the bottom.

They're a despicable country with despicable people.

by Anonymousreply 40August 19, 2018 11:00 PM

R40 I agree it tends to be a blinkered view that attributes all racism by any one as a result of European Colonialism and White people in the deep south of the US.

by Anonymousreply 41August 19, 2018 11:05 PM

If we think about it, human beings emerged from "apehood" in tribal groups that were dispersed across sub-Saharan Africa. Even at that point, the individual tribes had individual characteristics. (There is more genetic diversity among humans in Africa than anywhere else in the world, according to biologists). Protective of food sources and women, who were often abducted to furnish mates for opposing tribes, it became "normal" for humans to identify themselves by tribe and regard all others as enemies. Caution towards strangers was the rule. Even though we no longer live in tribes, and in fact are well-mixed across the globe, we carry those fears of "the other", which is basically hard-wired into our DNA. Now those fears have become centered around skin color, whereas in the past there were other markers that people paid attention to. That doesn't excuse our racist behavior. It merely tells us that from earliest childhood we have to be trained to be open to people who look or act different, in order to overcome what used to be protective for our tribal ancestors, and what is now going to be our doom unless we learn another way to exist. Unfortunately, there are myriad groups around the world who seek to heighten these fears and prejudices rather than trying to lessen them.

Trump administration dismantles LGBT-friendly policies

The nation's health department is taking steps to dismantle LGBT health initiatives, as political appointees have halted or rolled back regulations intended to protect LGBT workers and patients, removed LGBT-friendly language from documents and reassigned the senior adviser dedicated to LGBT health.

The sharp reversal from Obama-era policies carries implications for a population that's been historically vulnerable to discrimination in health care settings, say LGBT health advocates. A Health Affairs study last year found that many LGBT individuals have less access to care than heterosexuals; in a Harvard-Robert Wood Johnson-NPR survey one in six LGBT individuals reported experiencing discrimination from doctors or at a clinic.

Europeans are no more "racist" than Africans trying to maintain that Africa is for the Africans, which would mean Black majority rule in sub-Saharan Africa and one might see the value in something like that. If Europeans are trying to protect their countries against being overrun by "whatever" or "whomever" then one may not see it as "racist" as much as it is SURVIVAL. America is a different story, it's really apples to oranges. One could argue that in theory that neither the European descended whites nor the African descended blacks really belong there, but, there they are. It may be that racism, among some people, is not necessarily a "dirty word", so those who would try to attack using that word as well as "bigot" may be banging their heads against a stone wall, not that one is in sympathy with such, but it appears that perhaps "the beast which was once dead and is alive again" (biblical) could be nazism (small n) or fascism moreso in a newer, subtler form. Those who shout "peace, peace" will find no peace (?)..............

Does anyone seriously think racism was invented in the U.S.? Like jazz or McDonalds?

Racism is just one of the ugly parts of human nature. We're supposed to overcome it, not give into it. We're at a low point in that struggle given who leaders of Russia and the U.S. are.

And I'm sorry r50, but r51 is right. Your point, if you had one, wasn't made clear. Don't blame r51 for that.

by Anonymousreply 53August 19, 2018 11:52 PM

R49, all of that means nothing in the face of this. The times they are a changin'. If the old folks pass some laws that need to be removed again in a few years, that's whatever. For the most part those people are tacking on anti-gay stuff they have absolutely no intent of acting upon to keep the evangelical vote until they can capture the minority vote to replace it. And if they get a few through? If this administration has taught you nothing, it should be that the law is malleable.

---

The latest national survey by Pew Research Center, conducted June 8-18 among 2,504 adults finds striking increases in support for same-sex marriage among some demographic and partisan groups that, until recently, had broadly opposed it, including:

Baby Boomers. For the first time, a majority of Baby Boomers favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally.

African Americans. Blacks have long been less supportive of same-sex marriage when compared with whites, but the share of African Americans who favor same-sex marriage has risen 12 percentage points since 2015, from 39% to 51%.

Republicans. For the first time, a majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents do not oppose allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally.

Younger white evangelicals. Overall, white evangelical Protestants continue to stand out for their opposition to same-sex-marriage: 35% of white evangelical Protestants favor same-sex marriage, compared with a 59% majority who are opposed. But younger white evangelicals have grown more supportive: 47% of white evangelical Millennials and Gen Xers – age cohorts born after 1964 – favor same-sex marriage, up from 29% in March 2016.

OK r51 and r53, I'll try again--Black people in sub-Saharan Africa have demanded, and gotten, black majority rule in their countries. Europeans (historically accepted as "white people") seemingly object to being overrun with muslims, Indians, Blacks, those in general who are regarded as not necessarily European. For some, whoever they are, to call them "racist" will fall on deaf ears as it is not necessarily a "racist" argument. Compare and contrast the African slogan "Africa for the Africans" as opposed to Europeans as much as saying "Europe for the Europeans". Leave aside any reference to the Bible I made for the sake of simplicity. There, is that simple and to the point enough for you? Oh, and the American experience does not necessarily compare historically to the European one.

by Anonymousreply 55August 20, 2018 12:21 AM

1/2 of the country does not support gay marriage. The Republicans (who claim that they do) don’t support it or respect gays enough to demand that the party stop campaigning against gays. That kind of support is not really support at all. It’s still bigotry, but covert closeted bigotry. Americans don’t like to admit that they are bigots.

Laws can be changed. What cannot be changed is the record number of far right anti gay federal court appointments that Trump is making. Those will hinder and obstruct the gay rights movement for decades to come.

Young people are more progressive but young people don’t consistently vote.

by Anonymousreply 56August 20, 2018 12:44 AM

"Bigot" or "racist" being screamed by some against others does not necessarily register anymore. It seems this tack may have died the '70s but some just don't know it yet, hence the popularity of Trump among some (although he gets by with a little help from his Russian "friends"). Those who want justice won't get it necessarily by screaming it seems--it's sort of like the old saying, maybe: "you catch more flies with honey instead of vinegar".

by Anonymousreply 57August 20, 2018 12:59 AM

R35, that's a great point about South Asians. Bangladeshis and Pakistanis there have higher rates of poverty than black people do here! Additionally, the word "Paki" there is used as a slur towards all brown people but here, Paki is used as a term of endearment among Pakistani people.

by Anonymousreply 58August 20, 2018 1:01 AM

That's..wrong actually. From the article you clearly didn't read: "By a margin of nearly two-to-one (62% to 32%), more Americans now say they favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry than say they are opposed."

Nothing is going to be reversed. We may get some garbage "freedom of religion" laws that restrict free expression for a bit, but my guess is that the more conservative judges fear dealing with Sharia more than the gays and will restrain themselves upon impact analysis. As long as states keep adding homosexuality to workplace protected state classes, equality's been reached, we're done and just need patience and presence until those young folks who don't vote consistently become older folk who do.

As I age, I've come to realize that the souls of Europe and the souls of Africa are not compatible. I think that European racialism is different than the US , because Europe is much older than the US, and therefore there are boundaries that have existed for centuries...towns, villages etc. so vast movements of populations of color into these areas are bound to cause alarm Of course, the major blind spot for Europeans is their movement into and exploitation of other countries and peoples. I'm really afraid to contribute anything to this thread. There are fundamental differences between Europe and America.

I can't speak for Europeans. I'm an American, who comes from a working class background, not the upper class background that many DLers claim. I just checked Wikipedia, and my city is 44.8% black. I've never lived a life that didn't include black people. Certainly, I didn't see any black people at Sunday mass, but always at school. I've always had black neighbors (and still do). I know my neighbors, and they know me, and yes, I know them by their first names. And many of them are black. And (I know DL doesn't care for this), my ex-BF is black; he's the best guy I've ever known. He owns a social services company (performing Home Health Care) and he texted me this morning to tell me he was at the hospital while one of his clients was hospitalized for pneumonia. He's going to be taking me in for an endoscopy on Tuesday. I realize there's a lot of racism here in the US. But, I don't really see much of that in real life. Most of us actually like each other just fine, and get along with each other. We've grown up together, after all. On the rare occasions when I've traveled to the other side of the state, where I never encounter another black person, I actually feel nervous and uncomfortable, and regain my composure when I drive back to my hometown.

I'm sorry but I'm not R15. I actually embrace people from all over and have no problem with foreigners. I do hold lots of prejudice toward religious people of all sects, though. I think it's healthy to hate religion.

I'm neither European nor American so I see myself as neutral in this rivalry.

I've always thought that Europeans were much more racist. I also read of non-white European athletes who were surprised to find that they weren't racially abused when they played in US stadiums because this is really commonplace in Europe.

My opinion based on countries I've lived. America (very proud of its racism, won't hide it), Brazil (racist but will never admit it), Holland (racist but will try to convince you otherwise, then will talk behind your back), Germany (do I need to?), Mexico (we're not racist cause we're all brown, yet whites get all the privilege. I've only travelled to Russia, but everyone I know who had lived there tells me it is the most racist european country.

r88 Is there a link or something you can cite to sort of give some proof to your assertion that it is more commonplace in European stadiums? As I understand Europeans can be pretty rowdy at their soccer matches, especially the British. Americans are usually well behaved by comparison as I've been given to understand.

R89 isn't it racism when lighter-skinned more-Spanish-blooded rather than Native American, "get all the privilege"? My experience in Mexico was that racism is rampant, against people with Native American blood.

Some would say it's all a matter of money r91.

by Anonymousreply 92August 20, 2018 7:56 AM

R91 I meant that Mexico was racist, but played the mixed card.

by Anonymousreply 93August 20, 2018 8:55 AM

Western Europeans are less racist.

By far.

Case closed.

It's interesting that some people posting here keep writing about sub-Saharan Africa as though it's one country in terrible shape. Clearly most of those people have never been near Africa. They are just spouting opinions, based on nothing. Each country is different, depending on what its government has done, what the primary exports are, etc. The fact that China is investing extremely heavily in come countries in Africa is a sign that they don't share that assessment. Mauritius and Cape Verde are doing moderately well. Ghana is stable and has a good growth rate. Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda are all showing steady improvement. Linking a picture of Nairobi below to show that it's quite a beautiful city. Nigeria is a huge economy, by African standards. If growth rates don't change, it will also be one of the most populous nations on the earth within about 50 years. (Over half a billion). All of sub-Sarahan Africa needs to lower its birth rates. If the economies can start offering a level of security and opportunity, AND access to birth control for women, because men won't do anything about it, it should start to drop substantially. But of course there are many other nations and economies that are in crappy shape because of poor governance, lack of natural resources, wars, dictatorships, and the like.

And frequently, when called on their racism, Dataloungers suddenly change the conversation to grammar, typing, pretty much anything else they can pretend elevates their racism into the realm of "smarter than you."

Because racists are never hierarchical. WHY THE VERY IDEA!

They're so perfect that way. So much better than the rest of us.
