Physical manifestations of crazy (&how do the eyes give it away?)

I was wondering what it is about the eyes -- the tension of the face? The eyebrows? We all know the look, but what is it exactly?

What else tells you someone is a little off?

Martha Stewart has dem crazy eyes. Other manifestations are paranoid thinking and outlandish conspiracy theories we see here

by Anonymousreply 2August 17, 2018 6:06 AM

While ranting, having unchecked spittle flying out of their mouth - gross and unpleasant.

While ranting, with sweaty, reddened cheeks from blood pressure rocketing from anger - unattractive

Giggling at inappropriate times and/or finding things hilarious that others are horrified by - huge sign to avoid the person, as much as possible

Crazy Eyes - as mentioned by OP

by Anonymousreply 3August 17, 2018 6:21 AM

I don't know if this is the sort of thing you're referring to OP, but I remember a while back a DLer warned about people, especially men, who wear a ton of rings. That immediately struck a chord with me because I actually did know a druggie BPD psycho who was always wearing a shitload of ugly, cheap rings.

People who have FUCKING weird hair and LOVE it and think It's normal. I'm not kidding. I'm looking at you Trump, or that evangelical chick on TV with purple hair, or even Tammy Faye Baker with her Tarantula eyeashes. There's a few other's that will come to mind. It's like some kind of psychotic/dissociative symptom- you actually think this looks good and that others do too?? Whoo Boy.

[quote]According to Chinese medical face reading, when the white part of the eye, known as the sclera, is visible beneath the iris, it represents physical imbalance in the body and is claimed to be present in alcoholics, drug addicts and people who over-consume sugar or grain. Conversely, when the upper sclera is visible it is said to be an indication of mental imbalance in people such as psychotics, murderers, and anyone rageful. It was held that stress and fatigue may also be a cause. In either condition, it is believed that these people attract accidents and violence.

R4 Interesting. A BPD former female colleague wore a lot of rings also that clicked and cranked while she talked with her hands. Yipes.

Agree, R4 is interesting, also, the post about hairstyles.

I wore a lot of cheap rings when I was hooked on mini-thins in my early 20s.

I think anything to excess. A psychologist friend actually told me about the ring thing too. I always give the side eye to a woman (or man) with super long hair. That always seems weird to me. Or tons and tons of tats, or bumper stickers!

Basically anyone making too much a statement in some way screams look at me.

Super bugged out, crazy eyes can just be a thyroid condition too though. Hyperthyroidism I believe.

by Anonymousreply 17August 17, 2018 6:25 PM

I remember that poster too, R4. There is a woman who works in my office and I know when she's coming because I can hear her jewelry jangling, apparently she is a nasty piece of work.

OK yeah Sanpaku, what else?

I like the ones about the rings, hair, excessiveness, etc. Those are fairly novel.

Here's an obvious one, people who insist on dragging their dog with them to the store in guise of an emotional support animal. It's plain to see the dog would rather be home, but their attention whore owner would rather have people fawning over his/her pet than give any fucks about what the dog wants. Dead giveaway it is a horrible person.

Also from Chinese Medicine, the tongue gives away a lot about a person. A "heart crack" is when a middle crack in the tongue goes all the way to the tip, and a pointed tip, are both signs of being mentally unbalanced. A red tip or lack of coat indicates propensity to rage or fly off the handle.

A thick-coated or greasy-coated tongue can also indicate something is off mentally, though can be more short-term issues. Think Miley Cyrus when she was acting out, and now when she sticks her tongue out it looks more normal and she is not as out there as she was.

This right here. R16 has it all summed up pretty much. Pretty must anything taken to excess is a sign of a damaged psyche. Anorexics, 600-pounders, those steroid-addled bodybuilder freaks, people with 30 pets, people who have bad hygiene and grooming, people who take their hygiene and grooming to an obsessive level, people who are intensely sexually repressed, people who are oversexed, people who follow insanely strict diets, etc. etc.

by Anonymousreply 38August 18, 2018 5:33 AM

I offered a nutritionist a cookie at a social event: one sugar cookie. SHe refused and gave a very long explanation why starting that it was not a colour in nature (it was pink) and ending with she has caused her tongue to learn to enjoy bitter flavours and doesn't want to develop a taste for sugar. It was a single cookie. Is that crazy? She was acting like I offered her a cyanide capsule.

This is one that I really stand by.

Anyone who has not one friend in their life, PARTICULARLY if he or she lives in the same general area they've always lived in, or have lived for years. Old friends who longer are in their lives don't count. How can you live in the same place you grew up in, or have lived for years and not have even one friend in your life? Steer clear of a person like that, something is very wrong.

by Anonymousreply 50August 18, 2018 12:04 PM

People who have no one who seems to have anything good to say about them. Don't feel sorry for them, just avoid. Believe me, they brought it on themselves.

by Anonymousreply 51August 18, 2018 12:07 PM

That's the gay stare some gay men have in their eyes.

by Anonymousreply 52August 18, 2018 12:15 PM

No, the gay man stare is different from the crazy stare. Similar, but not the same.

by Anonymousreply 53August 18, 2018 12:21 PM

The gay stare (pupils dialated, deer caught in the headlights) that some gay men have is often accompanied by gay lips. The actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a perfect example of someone with extreme gay stare and extremely gay lips.

by Anonymousreply 54August 18, 2018 12:30 PM

People who were badly abused as children, and or people who come from families that are so dysfunctional that none of them can stand each other, are usually cray, and to be avoided if you want to keep crazy drama out of your life.

Great topic, OP. Has any research been done in this area? Think about witnesses who claim criminal's eyes changed right before committing a violent act.

Runners often have crazy eyes. I've always felt they use running (consciously or unconsciously) to control their mental health.

I watched the eyes of a loved one transform as he sunk into a deep depression and eventually killed himself.

Any psychologists or psychiatrists available to comment?

by Anonymousreply 57August 18, 2018 12:55 PM

R41, you're an asshole. I don't need to see it to know it, either.

Mystical Chinese medicine? Bitch, our doctors were prescribing fucking cigarettes and still bleeding people well into the 20th century. Their animal shit is not cool, and they're changing that, but just where do you think the chemicals in your medicine comes from? Or your cheese for that matter? Don't answer, I know you're ignorant and a jerk because you want to characterize an ancient and effective medical system that our gov't pays for people to use because it's been thoroughly investigated by science. The AMA may not like that acupuncturist, but plenty of Americans do.

You can also stop with your bullshit judgements and your policing of this thread, too. OP asked for physical signs or manifestations and both TCM and Ayurveda have ways of recognizing this in ourselves so we can bring ourselves into balance. Tongue diagnosis, for instance, is very accurate and used by our medical system as well, you idiot. Say AHHHHHHHHHH.

R55 Hi Megan Markle, didn't know you posted on DL

by Anonymousreply 59August 18, 2018 1:10 PM

AND you, R55...where do I begin? Is there a physical manifestation of being severely physically abused? Do tell us how you separate out these people from your life? Many many people in this country suffer from this, so tell me how it's working out for you....did you find a person who grew up in a emotionally balanced and financially secure household? If you did, I congratulate you, but somehow, with your post, I doubt that.

Yes, these people carry a lot of baggage, but to marginalize them in this way shows how damaged you are.

by Anonymousreply 60August 18, 2018 1:11 PM

People who have " fallings out" with multiple people, over being treated badly. Dead giveaway for PBD.

by Anonymousreply 61August 18, 2018 1:13 PM

R59, I'm no 'Sugar' and could care less about the BRF, but anyone who's been paying attention to the famewhoring Markle farmily would be able to discern, however slightly, that Meghan is the one being emotionally abused and has been in that position long before her engagement and marriage. She's not the perp' here.

by Anonymousreply 62August 18, 2018 1:13 PM

R61, is there a physical manifestation of that? A dead giveaway if you're talking or looking at them? For instance, someone who complains about other people, continuously, in a shrill voice would lead me to suspect they have something wrong with them. You'd have to know their history if you're going on your criteria, and who would want to?

by Anonymousreply 63August 18, 2018 1:15 PM

R62 I was just kidding. It was a reference to the insane Markle family, not a dig at Megan.

by Anonymousreply 81August 18, 2018 7:50 PM

Not really a physical manifestation but a bad personality trait: People who have no one in their life, i'm talking no partner, no family, no friends, don't get along with coworkers (if they even have a job) but of course they have elaborate stories as to why their spouse/family/friends left them and nothing is EVER their fault!

I've seen this too many times and know enough now that it's a red flag. If someone is completely alone, there's a damn good reason for it. RUN AWAY.

I agree R50., when people don't seem able to maintain friendships past a couple of years or family relationships that's a huge red flag. Ditto if they almost immediately start badmouthing their friends to you when you'very just met, you know you'll be next.

Also, every person I've ever met who came on super strong and became an almost instant friend, ended up being either a narcissistic control freak or a paranoid loon.

Going back to the eyes there are few things. Eyes darting around, perhaps frenetically or just unable to fix on one point. Especially when coupled with a tense stance. It means they feel unsafe, and in perfectly normal, safe situations it looks out of place. Feeling unsafe is also associated with avoiding eye contact, in Western culture. Again in particular when their body is tense.

Eyes that have dulled, is associated to depression. The life draining from their eyes. In opposition they will have limited movement.

Sometimes dilated pupils are a sign of elevated stress-hormone levels. Normal, non-disordered people in long-term abusive relationships have high stress-hormone levels, specifically elevated adrenaline and cortisol levels, which can cause the pupils to be dilated. So, sometimes dilated pupils are because the person is the abuser, the crazy one OR it is because they are being abused.

As far as the weight comments here, I agree. But wanted to add, I've noticed it is extremes; extremely underweight or extremely overweight.

So someone who is 10 or so pounds underweight, or someone 20 or 30 pounds overweight, probably isn't crazy unless they also have most of the top seven signs of a psychological disorder. The key is *extremes.* But that doesn't mean people who are a normal weight, or not too far from it, are normal. It depends if they also have most (or all) of the top seven signs of a disorder.

I've also noticed their facial muscles tend to look tight or tighter than usual for no apparent reason. Their smiles are forced or fake as is their laughter. They may also smile and/or laugh at the most inappropriate time. Quite often, (although not always) their body language does not match their words, sort of like a disconnect between the two. That blank, haunting, longer than is customary stare down some of them give off is also a dead-giveaway as are facial/neck tats, multiple piercings, and obsessed with pit bulls.

Some of them are pleasant and charming and appearance-wise look perfectly normal and they know how to work you by saying what you want to hear. So it's not always easy to determine crazy by appearances alone, or appearances and initial impression, without really knowing the person, but it can be done. But since one-third of the population is crazy it's a skill everyone should learn and continuously develop.

by Anonymousreply 114August 20, 2018 6:55 AM

Men who talk with an artificially low voice, almost like a wispier in a library. Iv know several guys that do this, and the are all true narcissists hiding some deep secret. They like to act like they got their shit together but in reality their life is out of control, they usually don't have very man long term friends, and nothing bad they do is ever their fault. R119=insecure "extrovert" bully. You're such a follower you've never lost at "Simon Says"

I wouldn't count obesity as a signifier, unless you want to categorize most modern Americans as crazy. Most of the time, a fat person is just a fat person.

I've learned to recognize bipolar/psychotic types of crazy in peoples' eyes and facial expressions. It's a kind of tension/panic/non-rational lizard brain microexpression that lingers longer than it would in well-medicated/healthy person's face.

For non-physical manifestations, I agree, the lack of long-term close friends and especially, multiple fallings out, and not speaking to former friends and family members is a red flag for personality disorders like BPD and NPD.

For sociopath narcissists, I notice they'll be described by widely disparate acquaintances with over-the-top complimentary words that sound like a planted script of superlatives. The sociopathic narcissist plants that script, mirroring and putting on an act, all things to all people, and the most wonderful creature ever.

Not everybody who is liked is a monster R121. You seem to have the green-eyed kind.

Name changes by people who don't have weird or offensive original names. They always turn out to be crazy people who are running away from themselves.

People with really sloppy, cluttered, dirty cars and the same for their houses. I don't mean their homes are a little dusty here and there and not very neat and tidy because they aren't good housekeepers. I mean sloppy, dirty, thick layers of dust, dirty floors, overstuffed closets, and crap that should have been thrown out long ago taking up space and clutter, clutter everywhere but not necessarily hoarding. Also, hoarders too. I've never met a hoarder who is not a mental case.

While I agree that obesity alone might not be a sugn, if you watch some of the people on My 600 lb Life for example, a good few of them are master manipulators if not just batshit crazy.

They use their weight to force their families to take care if them, even their kids. It's sickening.

Barring medical conditions, extremely underweight OR extremely overweight, as in more than 20 pounds under, or 80 pounds over. That would be extreme. I've never known a person to be "extreme' one way or the other, and not be mentally screwed up. Except for someone I knew and loved dearly, who was a great person and was 25 lbs underweight when he died of AIDS. Most people with extreme weight issues are nuts.

Stuffed animals ("plush") lined up along the rear window of a car (except for elderly people, then it's cute).

Excessive Star Wars / Hello Kitty / Anime / Comic book etc etc apparel/paraphernalia well into adulthood.

Keychains with lots of jangly.

Wheezing when forced to read from a script instead of vamping your both-sides and what-about-isms?

Eyes at different sea-levels. Eg, Shannon Doherty.

Changes phone number multiple times over a single week. Sends a group text every time to "let everyone know." Continues to change #s every other week.

Rapid and discursive speech. Obvious and OTT pathological lying.

Maniacal laughter at odd times and after uttering inappropriate/offensive things.

Buying crystals for their spiritual energy.

I'd just turned on the TV as this thread came up on DL, and Ellen was on the screen with her crazy eyes. She really does look disturbed. I never thought it until you guys pointed it out, now I can't not see it.

Another sign I've noticed about "crazy" is that quite often their body language and words do not match. I have noticed that more in the workplace during typical daily business interactions than anywhere else. But I've also observed this with a few of my crazy relatives.
