Cher's new single is dropped

Pump it or dump it?

by Anonymousreply 102August 25, 2018 5:56 PM

I think the BPM should be higher to suit 2018.

by Anonymousreply 1August 9, 2018 5:00 PM

Wise choice for her first single from the album.

by Anonymousreply 2August 9, 2018 5:43 PM

It's not anything fresh or new, but it's fun. Will undoubtedly hit the clubs with gale force.

by Anonymousreply 3August 9, 2018 5:44 PM

LOVE IT! I listened to it at least 15 times today while at work (ear buds in, did not subject my coworkers to endless Cher). It's not innovative, but this is exactly what I'd want it to sound like if you combine Cher and ABBA. Fun!

by Anonymousreply 4August 9, 2018 11:36 PM

Even a little 'Believe' vocoder. My computer just burst into glitter flames!

by Anonymousreply 5August 9, 2018 11:39 PM

Again, she turns to dance music for a comeback. Just to piss off her fans who think she's too good for something that's repeatedly saved her recording career.

by Anonymousreply 6August 9, 2018 11:42 PM

You do realize that this is sampling Madonna's Hung Up, don't you?

by Anonymousreply 7August 9, 2018 11:44 PM

lol r7! So ignorant!

by Anonymousreply 8August 9, 2018 11:50 PM

He's joking, I'm sure.

by Anonymousreply 9August 9, 2018 11:51 PM

That's good trolling R7

by Anonymousreply 10August 9, 2018 11:51 PM

It's got a great beat Dick, you can really dance to it. I give it a 90.

by Anonymousreply 11August 10, 2018 12:16 AM

I love the new cover!

by Anonymousreply 12August 10, 2018 12:17 AM

Cher is back.

by Anonymousreply 13August 10, 2018 12:19 AM

When did she ever go away?

by Anonymousreply 14August 10, 2018 12:20 AM

That bitch has staying power.

by Anonymousreply 15August 10, 2018 12:22 AM

[quote]You do realize that this is sampling Madonna's Hung Up, don't you?

Ha. Long before Cher learned any Abba song, Madonna's Hung Up was shown to be direct theft from Abba's Gimme Gimme.

Google it. It was mentioned a lot at the time. And not as a sample. There are lots of comparison videos.

It's like Halo and Already Gone by Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson. Or when Gaga stole Express Yourself and called it Born This Way.

Hung up and Gimme Gimme. Except that Madonna did all those inexplicable deep knee bends. Her cement filled ASS put a stop to that! Hung up was Madonna's last gay gasp. I knew some dudes who thought the hook of that song was guaranteed to get them fucked. Gimme Gimme.

Cher sounds pretty good singing Abba. A lot like Cher in a compression chamber, singing Abba.

by Anonymousreply 16August 10, 2018 12:40 AM

love the track!!!

by Anonymousreply 17August 10, 2018 12:44 AM

Well if Madonna hadn't don't Hung Up, we would have been deprived on Con Loli's masterful retake.

by Anonymousreply 18August 10, 2018 12:49 AM

hadn't done. but hadn't don't sorta has a ring to it.

by Anonymousreply 19August 10, 2018 12:52 AM

Love it!

I loved “A Woman’s World” also!

by Anonymousreply 20August 10, 2018 12:57 AM

The pitch of the background "computer people" (not Cher's vocoder) is too high...like annoyingly so. That's my only complaint.

And to echo what someone said upthread, I look forward to a slightly sped-up club mix of this.

by Anonymousreply 21August 10, 2018 12:58 AM

Come on, it's pretty soulless shit. More soulless than Abba. Cher's stronger voice could have knocked these songs into dance track heaven 20 years ago - but nobody wanted them then. She IS savvy, but never was too smart. When Cher was asked in an interview for Mamma Mia 2 if she would ever be a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race, she looked completely incredulous and responded "You watch that show?"

She doesn't have to be on the show, it's that she had no idea it had become so powerful in HER culture. Cher met Chad Michaels on one of the talk shows and completely ignored him. She doesn't know gay men who don't dress her or do her makeup. I get what's great about her, but she's Norma Desmond having another comeback.

Cher is surrounded by geriatric teenage girls like herself. They braid each others hair, pig out on penny candies and make prank phone calls to cute boys. A genius, visionary or real artist she is not. ....... & the gays love her for that.

by Anonymousreply 22August 10, 2018 1:11 AM

She originally said The shopping shopping song was as close to pop as she wud get.....i like her recent music...i hate heavy metal...so i hope she isnt singing MY equivalent of heavy metal...i Hope she likes what she's singing ...

by Anonymousreply 23August 10, 2018 1:16 AM

I haven’t heard it yet but it’s Cher so I wholehardedly support it.

by Anonymousreply 24August 10, 2018 1:17 AM

Does Cher get you hard, dear?

by Anonymousreply 25August 10, 2018 1:19 AM

To me, it just feels like she isn't putting any energy behind it.

by Anonymousreply 26August 10, 2018 1:24 AM

Well, it's one of my favorite ABBA singles, so I enjoyed it. And I like the fact that Benny and Bjorn seem to have endorsed Cher as an interpreter of their songs. And, as pointed out above, Madonna got permission from ABBA to sample the song for 'Hung Up', which I've read is they first time they approved anyone to sample any of their work.

by Anonymousreply 27August 10, 2018 1:28 AM

That Con Loli Video is EVERYTHING!

by Anonymousreply 28August 10, 2018 1:29 AM

Cher doesn't have the energy. The tracks are already doubled and doubled again and then with that Abba special sauce where they speed up another track just a bit to provide not a harmony, but a harmonic. Cher doesn't have vocal power or resilience anymore though she does sound good on the downward notes of Fernando.

Abba approved? Means not much at this point but $$$. Gimme Gimme. Any number of singers would have been a better choice than Cher's vibrato heavy contralto for a dance treatment album of their songs.

Cher's an icon, yeah. She's just too old to give these songs new life. Listen to the originals.

by Anonymousreply 29August 10, 2018 1:34 AM

R28 I think my favorite detail is the aluminum foil "mirror wall".

by Anonymousreply 30August 10, 2018 1:37 AM

[quote]Again, she turns to dance music for a comeback. Just to piss off her fans who think she's too good for something that's repeatedly saved her recording career

When did she become such a fan of dance music? She had to be practically dragged into the studio to do the Take Me Home album, as she wanted to do Rock and Roll at that time. After Believe came out, she released that independent album which she said at the were songs that were much closer to who she was an artist. Seems like dance music was never a favorite of hers up until recently.

by Anonymousreply 31August 10, 2018 1:37 AM

[quote]Ha. Long before Cher learned any Abba song, Madonna's Hung Up was shown to be direct theft from Abba's Gimme Gimme.

I googled your claim and found out Madonna wrote a letter to Abba people asking if she could use the sample. They said yes. and this was all before the song was released.

I never understand Madonna Derangement Syndrome.

by Anonymousreply 32August 10, 2018 1:42 AM

it's not a bad version but it shouldn't be the single because Madonna had a hit with that sample. What about "Knowing Me Knowing You", the Visitors, Voulez Vous, or Does Your Mother Know? None of which I think are on the Cher album but are some of my faves.

by Anonymousreply 33August 10, 2018 1:47 AM

R18, Excellent! I can't help thinking that Janet arranged that video shoot, and paid those fat whores in Baja Fresh coupons!

by Anonymousreply 34August 10, 2018 2:13 AM

Dance Queen!

by Anonymousreply 35August 10, 2018 2:17 AM

R35, You're clearly talking about Janet, and that's 'Queen of Dance'.

by Anonymousreply 36August 10, 2018 2:23 AM

Fuck that, I'll always be Queen.Just had my second posthumous #1 dance chart hit, bitches!

by Anonymousreply 37August 10, 2018 2:35 AM

Madonna never wrote a letter in her life R32. Hung up was another gross display from her. Not a bad song though - because it was more than a sample.

by Anonymousreply 38August 10, 2018 2:37 AM

I just googled "Madonna letter" and clicked on images. She's written a lot of letters.

by Anonymousreply 39August 10, 2018 2:44 AM

[quote]And I like the fact that Benny and Bjorn seem to have endorsed Cher as an interpreter of their songs.

Seem? They are producing the album.

by Anonymousreply 40August 10, 2018 2:44 AM

Gee, when will Cher be on Jimmy Fallon pretend singing this song while he rolls on the floor in rabid foam? Laughing at her stories. Warren Beatty tried to fuck you when you were 16? Hahhhahhahhahhaha. Who's Warren Beatty? What do you think of the young female singers today Cher? "Look out bitches!" Ha hah ha hahha ha ha ha HAH!

It's Cher - lip syncing her new ABBA song that is nowhere good as the old silly one.

by Anonymousreply 41August 10, 2018 3:07 AM

She's seventy-two years young!

by Anonymousreply 42August 10, 2018 3:08 AM

No wonder the production sounds exactly like the original.

by Anonymousreply 43August 10, 2018 3:10 AM

I fuckin' love it!

by Anonymousreply 44August 10, 2018 11:32 AM

[quote]When Cher was asked in an interview for Mamma Mia 2 if she would ever be a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race, she looked completely incredulous and responded "You watch that show?"

I'm not a fan of Cher, but I love her for saying this. So much of the Entertainment World is sucking up to whatever is happening at any moment, even if it's awful.

by Anonymousreply 45August 10, 2018 12:43 PM

Yeah, auto-tune is presented as secondary, but I shouldn't have to hunt for Cher only to find old vocal gimmicks.

by Anonymousreply 46August 10, 2018 1:08 PM

OMG ‘Con Loli ‘ at r18 is so good, totally serving early Almodóvar.

by Anonymousreply 47August 10, 2018 6:23 PM

I have to admit the only chills I got watching the new Mamma Mia was when Cher descended the stairs singing "Fernando". I thought, "That's star power".

by Anonymousreply 54August 12, 2018 5:01 PM

It’s reductive.

by Anonymousreply 55August 12, 2018 5:39 PM

Madonna used so much of the original, unadulterated ABBA song in Hung Up that it practically sounds like a cover version.

Now we have a proper cover version.

by Anonymousreply 56August 12, 2018 5:47 PM

It's the beat and the amp sound. Non-substantive, repeating lyrics.

by Anonymousreply 57August 12, 2018 5:49 PM

Very clever cover art of Cher blond and brunette just like the original girls, Agnetha and Anni-Frid.

by Anonymousreply 58August 12, 2018 6:17 PM

The song is doing exceptionally well on the WW iTunes Charts. It was #6 a few days ago and is #10 now. She is still the only woman in the top 10.

by Anonymousreply 61August 12, 2018 7:58 PM

Apparently Agnetha and Anni-Frid are also on Cher’s album.

by Anonymousreply 62August 12, 2018 7:59 PM

REDUCTIVE

by Anonymousreply 63August 12, 2018 8:19 PM

I wish she hadn’t been vocodered so much on this. What could have been fun is just garbage

by Anonymousreply 64August 12, 2018 8:32 PM

"is dropped"?

by Anonymousreply 65August 12, 2018 8:45 PM

It sucks.

by Anonymousreply 66August 12, 2018 8:52 PM

Umm. Didn’t this bitch retire like 25 years ago?!

by Anonymousreply 67August 12, 2018 8:58 PM

I wish Cher would record another big ballad like "The Way of Love." Great. great song.

#1) You can't really improve on ABBA unless it is 1992 and you're Erasure. So why bother covering them?

#2) Enough with the fucking auto-tune already. It's like nails on a chalkboard and basically screams to your audience that you're tone deaf and have no vocal range.

I'll stick with "Dark Lady" Cher, when she was still cool.

by Anonymousreply 69August 12, 2018 9:27 PM

The Way of Love is like 40 years old. It's from before I was born. Cher recorded lots of ballads. I'm waiting for Dancing Queen on this new album. That will be the test if she fails hard or just passably at ABBA. It has a hard chorus and requires a two octave range to sing. She can't do it without a lot of studio tricks. I want her to succeed because she is a kick ass broad and 72 would put make her a LEGEND to have a bit hit, but her voice is not right for a lot of things and it's not what it used to be either.

by Anonymousreply 71August 12, 2018 9:54 PM

r62, do you know in what way Frida and Agnetha contribute to Cher's album?

by Anonymousreply 72August 12, 2018 10:28 PM

[quote]#1) You can't really improve on ABBA unless it is 1992 and you're Erasure.

Back in 2000 the A*teens from Sweden were pretty succesful in Europe with their ABBA covers (not saying they were an improvement though lol)

I wish she would wear her hair platinum, it looks great on her, she looks luminous with that hair color. Now that I've seen her like that, her black hair is too harsh.

by Anonymousreply 75August 12, 2018 11:01 PM

The homage to ABBA on Cher's album cover might be from the video Knowing Me, Knowing You. They are seen in profile and head on to each other throughout. This camera shot was often used in their videos. I believe it was even done in Muriel's Wedding.

by Anonymousreply 76August 12, 2018 11:20 PM

I am curious. But not sure she can pull it off, covering Frida's and Agnetha's voices. So far I'm not impressed. Fernando is a hundred time better sung by Frida. Everybody is raving about her version, but I don't think it's all that. And this dance version of Gimme Gimme Gimme doesn't really bring anything new to the table. Super Trouper worked well with her though.

by Anonymousreply 77August 12, 2018 11:46 PM

Wasn't too thrilled with her version of Fernando from Mama Mia 2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new 'Gimme' single. It's a barn-stormer for sure.

by Anonymousreply 78August 13, 2018 11:32 AM

I've like plenty of her old songs but this was just a terrible version of a great ABBA song.

She brought nothing new to it & the song seemed like it went on forever.

Is she trying to be the Queen Of Autotune?

Mission accomplished.

by Anonymousreply 79August 13, 2018 3:20 PM

I like it better than ABBA's original.

by Anonymousreply 80August 16, 2018 11:16 AM

Great track from my Cher. Can't wait for the whole album next month.

by Anonymousreply 81August 19, 2018 1:19 PM

I love it, but I'm really waiting for Dancing Queen. Perfect choice for her.

by Anonymousreply 82August 19, 2018 1:37 PM

I agree r82.

by Anonymousreply 83August 19, 2018 1:38 PM

We'll see. As it was said upthreat, Dancing Queen is a difficult song to sing. It's easy to fuck it up.

by Anonymousreply 84August 19, 2018 1:47 PM

Cher tweeted that some of the songs were difficult for her, but considering she doesn't record much these days hopefully she got great input.

by Anonymousreply 85August 19, 2018 3:43 PM

I like the opening guitar chords reminiscent of "Secret Agent Man" and hoped they were Cher's producer's touch, but no they were in the original. But I have to say Cher's lower pitched vocal fits better than whichever ABBA girl sang lead.

Hey, like she said about her last CD- Hopefully I get a couple hits for my act.

by Anonymousreply 91August 23, 2018 4:20 PM

Dancing Queen is next. According to her Twitter, she's been rehearsing that for a live performance. So I'm thinking not so much vocoder.

by Anonymousreply 92August 23, 2018 4:24 PM

Cher's SOS is pretty good.

BTW, it wasn't leaked, it's officially released.

by Anonymousreply 94August 23, 2018 7:34 PM

I'm not a fan of vocoder except on Believe. She has such an interesting voice without it.

I love her voice on this unreleased song.

She & her Goddaughter recorded it for a birthday present. It's Richard Stark's favorite song & the Goddaughter is his child.

R95

I love that! Cher should've released that to Country radio.

by Anonymousreply 97August 24, 2018 3:36 PM

hate that shit from r95. The new Abba reworks are great though.

by Anonymousreply 98August 25, 2018 12:05 PM

Oh come on! It's fucking terrible.

Dull, uninspired, predictable and done then thousand times before. Her voice so over-produced and autotuned. She obviously can't sing any more - she can't even finish her notes as can be clearly heard. You old queens have such terrible taste.

Also - she looks like every other contestant on Drag Race. Just awful.

by Anonymousreply 99August 25, 2018 12:11 PM

r99, what a big bitch you are!

by Anonymousreply 100August 25, 2018 1:17 PM

R99

Her voice sounds fantastic in the R95 clip.

There's zero autotune & her voice is strong AF.

by Anonymousreply 101August 25, 2018 5:46 PM

Rolling Stone went wild over her version of SOS. I can't link from my phone, but they have the complete song in their article.
