Trump puts an EU tariff on steel and aluminum. The EU responds by putting a 10% tariff on playing cards.

[quote]A separate 10 percent tariff will be imposed on imports of playing cards.

Here’s the meat of the article:

[quote]The EU said on Wednesday that it will impose a 25 percent tariff on $3.2 billion in American goods ranging from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to jeans and bourbon, the European Commission in Brussels announced. The EU's tit-for-tat tariffs will hit about 200 U.S. products that include steel, aluminum, corn, rice, orange juice, cigarettes, peanuts, cigars, T-shirts, cosmetics and boats.

Great R1, all things that we used to produce here. Hopefully it will stimulate production of those products here and it'll be an incentive forum to buy American made goods.

Why is the US importing orange juice?

by Anonymousreply 3June 21, 2018 1:24 AM

Oops, my bad. They are exporting orange juice. Sorry!!

by Anonymousreply 4June 21, 2018 1:24 AM

Who cares if it's the playing cards or orange juice or Harley Davidson's? The important thing here is that the books are balanced at the end of the day and that the measures hit them back dollar-for-dollar. The EU is acting pretty gallant here as it's waiting three years to impose the full set of measures, i.e. when the WTO determines the US acted illegally. So it'll have the moral victory in the end as well once the turd is out of office. Of course, the turd refuses to appoint new judges to the WTO panel so we'll have to wait until 2021 to get those.

In other news, India moves ahead with tariffs on almonds, which are going to hit the US farmers hard. Coming August 4th.

[quote]India, the world’s biggest buyer of U.S. almonds, raised import duties on the commodity by 20 percent, a government order said, joining the European Union and China in retaliating against Donald Trump’s tariff hikes on steel and aluminium.

[quote]New Delhi, incensed by Washington’s refusal to exempt it from the new tariffs, also imposed a 120 percent duty on the import of walnuts in the strongest action yet against the United States.

[quote]The move to increase tariffs from Aug. 4 will also cover a slew of other farm, steel and iron products.

r2 has the comprehension of a deplorable. You're already producing those goods, you little shit. Hence the tariffs on those exports! Jesus Christ.

by Anonymousreply 6June 22, 2018 11:45 AM

Aren't almonds grown in California exclusively? Is it just in deplora-districts or will this affect the blue ones as well?
