The Royal Family Favor Meghan Markle Over Kate Middleton
MEGHAN Markle will join new husband Prince Harry and the Queen at Royal Ascot today only weeks after marrying into the Royal Family. While Kate, on the other hand, took five years to attend the event after her wedding to Prince William.
“William and Kate's first engagement after their wedding was the Epsom Derby though they did not attend Royal Ascot together until 2016.”
Prince Harry often attends the opening day of the races, which kicks off today, and has previously travelled in a carriage with his grandparents, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.
As Kate is technically on maternity leave after the birth of Prince Louis, it is unclear as to whether or not the Duchess will make this year’s event.

Meghan is clearly loved and accepted by the Royal family to an almost unprecedented degree. It's good to see that Harry isn't the only one crazy about her!

Kate was William's steady for nearly a decade. She's an English girl from the Home Counties, and the public was accustomed to seeing her face on magazine covers for years while the speculation went on. Markle, until a year ago, was an unknown quantity and she's American, divorced, older than Harry, and biracial. She's being rolled out quickly so the Nation can get accustomed to her.
Meanwhile, Kate and William were sent off on a tour of Canada and America in June 2011, just a few weeks after the wedding.
I give Kate props for declining some of those invites, unlike her famewhore of a sister-in-law.

No one knows wtf Betty Windsor feels. She could be wishing Markle at the bottom of the Thames and you wouldn't know it. She's doing the practical thing to make sure the Firm stays intact. That means co-opting the outsider and turning her into an insider.
It will be a long day before Markle gets another chance to rant about her womanhood and feminism. Especially in her latest £4,000 Givenchy ensemble.
Can you be a feminist activist in a £4,000 Givenchy ensemble that your father-in-law paid for?

Sophie, Edward's wife, who was in the carriage with La Sparkle today keeps wearing Wickstead, including today. Wickstead was the designer banned from Twitter after Sparkle sugars savaged her for making a comment on Meggy's wedding dress. Methinks (Hey -if I can't use "methinks" here, where can I use it?) by championing Wickstead while sitting right next to Our Megs, Sophie is sending a message.
Also, I read that Harry normally rides with the queen, but is back with Uncle Ed this time.
But Smeggy got to present the trophy so who knows? A royal reporter pointed out the similarities between Megs' Ascot dress and that of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

She’s a boon to the RF because she’s biracial. She can tick off a minority box that makes the RF more diverse, without being in line for the throne. Win, win.

Big Liz really seems to be relishing her royal duties this year, jumping in and out of cars and carriages with wide smiles and astonishing ease for a woman of her age. I wonder if she is enjoying this, her final hurrah, seeing the next generations primed and set to take over. Hence more involvement expected from all of the youngers.

r15, what comment did Sophie make on her wedding gown? Seems kind of tacky that a member of the RF would publicly comment on her at all.

Liz has squirreled away untold millions in offshore accounts, according to the Paradise Papers, and all the "work" she does only serves to keep her family and herself in their exalted and completely unearned luxuries, so no idea why she has fans.
R15, Sophie, who is also from the working class, has not commented, she would never be allowed to, nor would she ever on her own; instead, Sophie is just wearing Wickstead all the time now, after Megs' fans savaged Wickstead for commenting on Megs' wedding dress. tl;dr it appears Sophie is showing quiet support for someone Megs' sugars hate.

Why does everyone try to make something out of nothing. Kate and Meghan seem to get along fine. It’s not a competition. They both are very confident in their skin if they weren’t they wouldn’t have married into royalty. It isn’t for most.

R18 - it was Wickstead who made the comments about Sparkle's wedding gown (that it was nearly identical to one of hers), not Sophie.
R21 -It has a broader meaning on blogs dedicated to royal watching: it indicates someone who worships the royal in question and always says sweet things about him/her, especially when the royal under discussion is coming in for a lot of criticism from other bloggers.
R15 - I think it's becoming clear that Sparkle envisions her "type" as in the Audrey Hepburn mode. And you're quite right . . .

I just looked up the Winstead dress in question. It has a similar neckline and lacks embellishments, but that's where the similarity ends between it and Meghan's wedding gown.

R23 - comparisons were also made to the wedding gown of Princess Angela of Lichtenstein. She's a black Panamanian, and she married the second son of the reigning house of Lichtenstein, I think the first black woman to marry into a reigning European family. Very accomplished woman who had her own design company, and she designed her wedding gown herself - it bears more similarity to Sparkle's than Wickstead's. Of course, this kind of design is a classic simple one, so it's unlikely to come off as terribly original. I thought Pss. Angela's gown looked more sumptuous in the material, for all its simplicity. For the record, she and Maximilian remain happily married and they also have a son named Louis.

R1 -"To an unprecedented degree"?? Really - like they didn't welcome Diana and Fergie just the same way? You know what the Queen said when those two marriages went to smash after the family welcomed them both just as warmly:
"This is what happens when you take in two girls from broken homes."

Megs and Harry are going to France on "official business" coincidentally just in time for her birthday!
She's pretty much definitely merching for the jewelry company (Birks?) and probably for Givenchy, but if not Charles is spending way more on Sparkle than on Drippy. Megs is on track to hit a million USD for clothing and accessories in her first year, whereas Kate was only estimated to have had 105,000 pound spent on her in her first year.

R29 - Diana left a fortune in jewelry, including the fabulous stuff she got from Arab potentates, so Harry really should be able to add sparkle to Sparkle without spending anything - she doesn't have to merch for Birks or anyone else. Diana left the jewels with instructions that they should be shared between her sons' wives one day. But, regardless, Markle can't be merching - there cannot be the slightest suggestion of a monetary quid pro quo, only the designer's/company's good luck that a high-profile royal likes his/her stuff. So, yeah, Charles is paying through the nose. I thought the Cartier bracelet was a wedding gift. The bride gets a few pieces she can call her own.
I don't remember what Kate wore in 2011, but I have a vague memory of a lot of very sweet nonthreatening English Girl stuff, pretty pastel coat-dresses with matching hats, with a few gowns thrown in. It's doubtful that overall those cute outfits cost quite what these haute couture outfits by Herrera and Ralph and Russo and de la Renta and Givenchy cost. Kate was younger (29) with less, er, backstory, and probably easier to dress, with her height, small waist, and nice legs. Meghan is nearly 37, second marriage, not English but eager to look like an English aristo, and to come across as "youthful", has a difficult body to dress, yet is intent on a more sophisticated couture look.
But it's not working so far. She's trying too hard.

Sparkle's not very tall. Apparently she claimed to be 5'7", but is really more like 5"4".
And she has very thin legs.
None of those flaws (as mentioned above and elsewhere frequently on DL) means she can't find a style that is becoming.
I suspect the problem is that she would like to wear certain "looks" that don't suit her body type.
More than likely she never had to dress for the kind of occasions that she is now encountering and insists on doing it her way. (No hat for the Chester events meant a day long struggle with pushing her hair out of her face.) The oversized "filmy type" dress for Harry's cousins wedding - way, way too big. With a slit that she kept holding closed. Why wear a dress with such a slit (designed to show off your legs) when your legs are not attractive?
As a California girl who was a part of the entertainment industry, she probably grew up wearing jeans and casual clothes. Any clothes for her job were selected to create a "look" for whatever character she was playing.... Suitcase girl on game show or low level acting job on a semi-known cable show.
Add to her problems is that coming with the limelight and fame she clearly loves, is a spotlight that is far, far greater than she ever imagined. Big budget for her wardrobe, so no excuses for poverty acceptable. And then there is the UK media who continues to be out for blood due to her ill-advised legal antics against the press and encouragement of her boyfriend/fiancee to similarly badly considered claims of attacks by the press.
Being slender and a pretty girl/woman probably meant she never had to think much about her clothes before.
But she has moved out of that universe into an entirely different environment with rules she thinks she can ignore that make no sense to her and a stubborn feeling that she can continue to do things her own way.

R34 - as others have replied earlier, Sparkle is short with no waist: a total box between shoulders and hips, balanced on toothpick legs. She wants to be taller and is constantly wearing flowing clothes that she thinks will give the illusion of length and a waist, and instead, they swamp her. She wore a lot of bulky coats with belts during the winter engagement months, including the disastrous outfit she wore for their engagement photo-call: a bulky unseasonal white trench coat with a big belt, from under which a black skirt showed unevenly, with beige ankle-strap heels that looked like they were about to fall off. The absolute debacle of the Oscar de la Renta bedspread she wore last weekend at the Spencer wedding, which probably cost thousands of pounds, is a classic illustration of what she tries but usually fails to do with her clothes.

R37 - She probably looks better in sporty, American clothes. I think she tried that with the neutrals and trousers she wore as the BRF rolled her out to the British public last winter with engagements across the country, and then realised that while those were all right for the Novelty Fiancee From Across The Pond, they wouldn't do for the Duchess of Sussex as she gets sent off to work by the Palace. And, the Duchess has a much bigger clothes budget than the Fiancee did. Charles probably didn't start paying for her wardrobe until after the wedding; he'd have been too aware of how that would have looked.
Kate didn't have to change much from the Home Counties girl identity and look she'd always had - in that sense, she's far more authentic than Sparkle, which is why she seems duller. Clothes Kate wears to weddings as the Duchess of Cambridge are not too different from clothes she wore to weddings as Kate Middleton, somewhat more expensive and occasionally bespoke, but recognisably still Our Kate From Bucklebury. But Sparkle has to completely retool herself for her new world.

she looks great in jeans and big shirts or turtlenecks, but not in tailored clothes and never in anything belted, which just trumpets the fact that she has no waist. she's not fat, of course, but she has no shape.

R44 - Don't think for a moment he wouldn't. He has a long history of cheating on his significant others - including, the tall, blonde, curvaceous, better-born ones. In fact, he was dating a model early in his "relationship" with Sparkle. Thus, her sharp moves to lock him in with the letters to the British press and the Vanity Fair cover before he even proposed.
