Why would ANYONE follow a religion that says it's okay to tear children away from their parents?

Evangelicals better watch out. The acceptance of everything that Trump does, no matter how outrageous, will come back to bite them.

When Sessions quotes Bible verses to get Evangelicals all excited, he is showing the world that his religion believes that ripping children away from their parents is a-okay.

This will end badly.

by Anonymousreply 79June 20, 2018 12:53 PM

They aren't. The Southern Baptist Conference and U.S. Catholic Bishops have both come out pretty strongly against this, for example.

by Anonymousreply 1June 18, 2018 7:39 PM

R1, So who is Sessions trying to talk to with his Bible verse, the same verse that was used to justify slavery.

If the Southern Baptist Conference was really that much against it, we'd see evangelical preachers raging about it. They're not

by Anonymousreply 2June 18, 2018 7:41 PM

The problem is, this is going to end BEAUTIFULLY for repubs, because next year, they can offer up someone who is "moderate" compared to Trump, and all the repubs are going to go head over heels for this person, bc he's so tame compared to the lunatic trump.

Paul Ryan is already lying low, "reflecting on his life" etc. so he can come back next year and be the golden child.

We are fucked no matter what.

by Anonymousreply 3June 18, 2018 7:45 PM

From the Washington Post:

[quote]The policy has cracked Trump’s usually united conservative base, with a wide array of religious leaders and groups denouncing it. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Southern Baptist Convention issued statements critical of the practice.

[quote]The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, who delivered a prayer at Trump’s inauguration, signed a letter calling the practice “horrible.” Pastor Franklin Graham of Samaritan’s Purse, a vocal supporter of the president’s who has brushed aside past Trump controversies, called it “terrible” and “disgraceful.”

[quote]“There’s definitely a groundswell of opposition from virtually every corner of the Christian community,” said Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. “People are able to understand immediately the drive of parents to protect their child and to understand the horror of splitting up vulnerable children from their parents.”

by Anonymousreply 4June 18, 2018 7:45 PM

Sessions really generated a backlash when he tried to use Biblical Scripture to support his policy.

[quote]Embers of disapproval were stoked when Attorney General Jeff Sessions cited scripture on Thursday in defense of the administration's tough immigration policies.

[quote]"I would cite you to the apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13 to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes," he said.

[quote]Historians and faith leaders were quick to point out that such passages were also used to justify slavery. "The founders of this nation used the same tactics to enslave our African forebears by lifting from the writings of the Apostle Paul passages to condone slavery and to break their spirit," the African Methodist Episcopal Church stated. It called Sessions'remarks "sad and sinful."

And other religious leaders are really not on board.

[quote]Evangelical leader Franklin Graham, son of "America's pastor" Billy Graham and a prominent Trump supporter, told the Christian Broadcasting Network on Tuesday, "It's disgraceful, and it's terrible to see families ripped apart and I don't support that one bit."

[quote]Tony Suarez, a Latino pastor who has informally advised Trump, tweeted, "God have mercy on those who seem so nonchalant to the plight of children being separated from their parents."

[quote]Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, called it "unconscionable," saying, "Those at the highest levels of the Trump administration are responsible and must provide the public a clear explanation of how this happened and how these families will be reunited."

[quote]Jentezen Franklin, a member of Trump's evangelical council, told CNN, "It's a very dangerous route to go when you begin to take selections of scriptures and say, 'The Bible was written to justify political standings. The Bible was never written as a political road map.' "

[quote]Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who in March said that the "big tent of the Democratic Party now seems a pup tent," called the breaking up of families "un-American and unbiblical."

by Anonymousreply 5June 18, 2018 7:46 PM

When Republicans lose the Southern Baptist Conference, that's a pretty huge loss. Quoting:

WHEREAS, God commands His people to treat immigrants with the same respect and dignity as those native born (Leviticus 19:33–34; Jeremiah 7:5–7; Ezekiel 47:22; Zechariah 7:9–10); and

WHEREAS, Scripture is clear on the believer’s hospitality towards immigrants, stating that meeting the material needs of “strangers” is tantamount to serving the Lord Jesus Himself (Matthew 25:35–40; Hebrews 13:2); and

WHEREAS, Southern Baptists affirm the value of the family, stating in The Baptist Faith and Message that “God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society” (Article XVIII), and Scripture makes clear that parents are uniquely responsible to raise their children “in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4); and

WHEREAS, Untold numbers of men and women seeking to enter the United States legally, desiring to become good citizens of our country, often languish at the borders due to the complexity of our immigration system; and

...

RESOLVED, That we desire to see immigration reform include an emphasis on securing our borders and providing a pathway to legal status with appropriate restitutionary measures, maintaining the priority of family unity, resulting in an efficient immigration system that honors the value and dignity of those seeking a better life for themselves and their families; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we declare that any form of nativism, mistreatment, or exploitation is inconsistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ; and be it further

Nothing matters. Trump is Teflon. The base will stay because they hate brown people.

by Anonymousreply 7June 18, 2018 7:50 PM

I tend to agree with R7- his base will stay with him no matter what and in the end, the GOP will not upset the base. The only answer his getting out the vote. When you consider that less than 30% of young adults vote and not much more than 45% ever- that getting out moderate voters who surely are not with the Trump base is the way to knock them out of power. Enough turnout to to overwhelm GOP led voter suppression and gerrymandering.

Vote people if you care about the future of our nation and planet. Anyone who says the GOP and Democratic party are the same is off their rocker.

by Anonymousreply 8June 18, 2018 7:57 PM

Sadly, I think R7 is right. Nothing seems to happen to this man. He gets by with every whim he wants.

by Anonymousreply 9June 18, 2018 7:59 PM

It is equally as inhumane and unchristian as the rest of the Republican agenda!

by Anonymousreply 10June 18, 2018 8:04 PM

While some religious leaders might have come out against this, the GOP base of deplorables still supports anything their dictator does.

by Anonymousreply 11June 18, 2018 8:04 PM

If God appointed Trump and the Republicans, then God is the Devil.

by Anonymousreply 12June 18, 2018 8:12 PM

I think level headed people realize that no on is FORCING these people to bring their children here illegally and face separation. It's all voluntary. The only person I hold responsible in this scenario are the stupid parents who obviously have more important priorities than staying united with their children.

by Anonymousreply 13June 18, 2018 10:13 PM

I’m not religious, but where the hell are those religious leaders now? Yes, they’re “speaking out strongly”, but they should be the first to be marching in the streets. Especially since most of their sheep are Trump voters.

by Anonymousreply 14June 18, 2018 10:17 PM

R13, really? It’s that simple? If you think that you’re level headed then you’re truly delusional.

by Anonymousreply 15June 18, 2018 10:18 PM

America does not separate families over misdemeanors. That’s some russian/Chinese shit right there

by Anonymousreply 16June 18, 2018 10:24 PM

Unfortunately either way Trump wins. If these policies are enacted and effective, he wins by decreasing border crossings and asylum applications which his base loves and he gets to Tweet for months on end. If it is challenged and found unlawful by the courts, he gets to say see I’m trying to do something and those libs aren’t letting me so get out and vote for candidates who support my agenda.

Basically we are stuck with some iteration of this crap until Jan. 2021 (and hopefully no later...) The 2020 election is going to make 2016 look not so bad in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 17June 18, 2018 10:25 PM

Trump will not win if Evangelicals stay home. I know it took a lot of greasing the wheel by preachers to get some Evangelicals of them to vote for Trump. I know some who voted for him were lukewarm in their support.

R13, level-headed people understands there is not good to come from adding extra trauma to children who did not make a decision to come here. I have no problems with detaining illegal immigrants but is inhumane to separate children from their parents. At least they should be allowed to stay with their mother. I am saddened that there are people who justify this cruelty to children.

by Anonymousreply 18June 18, 2018 10:35 PM

Why would ANYONE follow a religion that says it's okay to tear children away from their parents? Well.. people who don't really care for children, that's who.

by Anonymousreply 19June 18, 2018 10:38 PM

Evangelicals only care about unborn children. They’re all fair game once they exit the vagina.

by Anonymousreply 20June 18, 2018 10:43 PM

What do we do about the deranged republican third of the country that keeps inflicting misery on the rest of us.

We need some new voices. And we need a choir in lieu of a single leader.

Enough is enough.

by Anonymousreply 21June 18, 2018 10:48 PM

Oh please. The few evangelicals who complain will still turn around and vote GOP come November and 2020. At MOST maybe they will stay home and leave it up to others. But they will never vote against their chosen racists and misogynists.

Call me when this actually costs the GOP votes. And money.

by Anonymousreply 22June 18, 2018 10:56 PM

⛪ We've had enough of Jeff Sessions quoting from the Holy Book " The Word According To Sessions. "

by Anonymousreply 23June 18, 2018 10:58 PM

[quote]Unfortunately either way Trump wins.

That's not the way it's looking right now. There has been a pretty significant backlash on this one. Congressional Republicans are running scared. This is not what they want people talking about in an election year. And the longer this goes on, the worse it gets for them, particularly with the leaked stories, videos, and audio.

by Anonymousreply 24June 19, 2018 1:19 AM

None of this will end badly for the people responsible.

It never does.

by Anonymousreply 25June 19, 2018 1:31 AM

The first live tape of the chilidren by Propublica is simply devastating. There's no way Trump or Republicans will be able to withstand this once people start hearing and seeing this atrocity. Look for the HHS bitch to be the sacrificial goat (Sessions is too wiley to go).

by Anonymousreply 26June 19, 2018 1:36 AM

Where is Ivanka in all this?

by Anonymousreply 27June 19, 2018 1:54 AM

We not a religion. We are a cult that worships the Orange Calf.

by Anonymousreply 28June 19, 2018 2:02 AM

why would a parent endanger their child?

by Anonymousreply 29June 19, 2018 2:21 AM

why indeed?

by Anonymousreply 30June 19, 2018 3:38 AM

Because they are SICK SICK DEMONS, OP!

That's why!

by Anonymousreply 31June 19, 2018 5:15 AM

As of today, Trump's approval rating was at 45%.

😱 Frightening.

by Anonymousreply 32June 19, 2018 5:39 AM

R32 I fear we are seeing a fuller truer picture of America today.

by Anonymousreply 33June 19, 2018 5:43 AM

Why would ANYONE post nonsensical hyperbole as emotional manipulation? Oh wait, it's DL.

by Anonymousreply 34June 19, 2018 5:45 AM

Trump doesn't realize that a good politician is skilled in the fine arts of diplomacy and compromise.

His attitude is "My Way Or The Highway."

by Anonymousreply 35June 19, 2018 12:45 PM

All the Megachurch Frauds want to milk a new crop of Latino Sheeples for their very last dollar!

So they'll solidly back Orange Hitler, but take the minimum wage pay to fill their "church" baskets, & buy their planes and mansions!!

So cover your ass Franklin, we ALL know what's up!

This is all

by Anonymousreply 36June 19, 2018 1:02 PM

Self-proclaimed Minister Ms.Lindsey Graham should be appointed chaplain of The First Church of the Holy Walmart.

He should also be locked in the cages at night with the adult prisoners.

Graham's prison moniker will be 🔔 "Taco Belle"

by Anonymousreply 37June 19, 2018 1:25 PM

Once again NO ONE IS TAKING CHILDREN AWAY. The children can go back to the country where their parents are from? Why did you not start a thread about this?

It only shows how desperate you are to prove how ignorant and silly you are coming across. If you want to change a person's mind, then use actual arguments that have a logical conclusion.

I feel bad for the OP it must be awful going through life being such an idiot. This questions show you are more ignorant than any of the people you are decrying.

by Anonymousreply 38June 19, 2018 3:40 PM

Once again, you are not fooling anyone R38. You don't know the law and you don't know what's actually happening on the ground (or you pretend not to know).

"In an ACLU lawsuit over the separation of families in immigration detention, a DOJ official told the judge that “once a parent is in ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] custody and the child is taken into the Health and Human Services system, the government does not try to reunite them, and instead attempts to place the child with another relative in the United States — if the child has one.”

That isn’t what ICE and DHS say. They claim that once parents have finished their criminal sentences for illegal entry or reentry, they can be reunited with their children in civil immigration detention while they pursue their asylum case.

They don’t appear to have a system to bring families back together.

One flyer given to parents in Texas offered a number to call to locate children. But the number was wrong: Instead of being a number for ORR, it was an ICE tip line. (The flyers had to be corrected in pen.) And even if a parent can call ORR and ORR can identify the child, they might not be able to call the parent back — because immigrants in detention don’t have phone access. (Federal judges sentencing immigrants have urged the government to make sure that they have access to phones so they can relocate their kids.)

The plaintiffs in the ACLU’s family-separation lawsuit are one woman separated from her child for eight months after she presented herself for asylum at a port of entry, and another woman who was sentenced to a brief jail term for illegal entry but couldn’t be reunited with her child for months after her release back to DHS custody.

Some parents are being deported without their children. And some small children, according to advocates in Central America, are getting deported without their parents."

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 39June 19, 2018 5:55 PM

R38, the former head of ICE just said that, in some cases, the separation may be permanent.

Once kids go into a different system, deportation for the parent often happens much quicker. Years may go by.

by Anonymousreply 40June 19, 2018 6:17 PM

IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO REQUEST ASYLUM. IN FACT IT IS ACCORDING TO US LAW. Asylum seekers are FOLLOWING the law.

by Anonymousreply 41June 19, 2018 6:18 PM

People have already been deported without their kids. Back in their own countries, how are they supposed to advocate for the return of their children?

by Anonymousreply 42June 19, 2018 6:18 PM

These people are running away from horrible gangs and crime in their own countries (caused by our stupid war on drugs),

Do you really think they are wondering, "When I get to the US border, they might take away my kid." They are just thinking about escaping their own situation.

by Anonymousreply 43June 19, 2018 6:20 PM

Who would follow a religion like that? The same who follow a religion that demands women submit to men and calls them dirty temptresses. The same who separate women and children from men in their houses of worship. And so on.

by Anonymousreply 44June 19, 2018 6:26 PM

Evangelicals are a political sect of the GOP. Soulless.

by Anonymousreply 45June 19, 2018 6:37 PM

Anyone who wonders how an evil anti-Christ could rise to power, and dupe millions of so-called Christians, need to look no further than the campaign/presidency of Donald Trump Can you imagine anyone of his supporters being ok with any other serial cheater, grifter, and compulsive liar holding office? How would they react if any of the former First Ladies had pornographic pictures of themselves floating all over the internet?!

by Anonymousreply 46June 19, 2018 6:39 PM

Session was looking awfully smug when he read that Bible verse. And it is a perversion and abomination to use the Bible to support this Trump policy.

by Anonymousreply 47June 19, 2018 6:46 PM

[quote] R29: why would a parent endanger their child?

By staying in their home country, you mean? Seems like the parents are thinking of their child’s future by asking for asylum in the US.

It’s not odd or unusual for a parent to risk their own lives so that their child might have a better life.

by Anonymousreply 48June 19, 2018 6:50 PM

There are petitions on the aclu site and others to sign to END this crime against humanity, against children.

Also, call your senators and tell them:

STOP Trump's VILE and Dangerous Child Separation and Detention policy. It is child abuse. It is a crime against humanity, against children.

by Anonymousreply 49June 19, 2018 7:02 PM

It's kidnapping and Trump has been very clear about his ransom demands.

by Anonymousreply 50June 19, 2018 7:26 PM

Why would ANYONE follow any religion? If there is a God that created this amazing universe it sure the hell would have come up with a better religion than any of these crappy religions we have now. All religions were created by mankind to control mankind, that is why they are all so flawed.

by Anonymousreply 51June 19, 2018 7:33 PM

There are billions starving. We should shoot illegals on sight. They are a threat. I don't care about thousands but I care when there are millions of illegals. Trump is a moderate power broker.pragmatist. best kind of leader.

by Anonymousreply 52June 19, 2018 7:40 PM

Trump is a stupid man, with layers of mental illness, and possible dementia. He decides with his gut, because he is ignorant and lazily refuses to do the work necessary to learn. He is loud, but that should not be confused with strong.

by Anonymousreply 53June 19, 2018 7:50 PM

I guess Adolf and Pol Pot let you down r52 SORRY!

by Anonymousreply 54June 19, 2018 8:13 PM

Beats me, OP.

by Anonymousreply 55June 19, 2018 9:00 PM

I loathe Trump and the separation of children from their families, and I agree with most of the posters here (except for the Republican trolls). But I do find it kind of amusing and maybe a wee bit hypocritical that DL'ers, of all people, are now screaming, "Oh, the children! Won't someone please think of the children?" When did DL suddenly become concerned about the welfare of children?

by Anonymousreply 56June 19, 2018 9:17 PM

R52 is typing away from the nurses station. Again.

by Anonymousreply 57June 19, 2018 9:23 PM

The Bible said it. Jeff Sessions quoted it. I believe it. That settles it.

by Anonymousreply 58June 19, 2018 9:24 PM

It’s a false flag, R58! Run!

I love that they are bringing charges against him. Love this!!!

by Anonymousreply 62June 19, 2018 10:37 PM

Explained to us, r38, why many of their parents have already been sent back to Mexico, while their children remain behind. What is Trump's plan? Will he train the little children to build a wall that will reach to heaven.

"Suffer" the little children who have been forced to come to me"........ Donald J. Trump

by Anonymousreply 63June 19, 2018 10:52 PM

Trump is an [bold] OGRE !

by Anonymousreply 64June 19, 2018 10:53 PM

Why would ANYONE follow a religion.

There, fixed it for you.

by Anonymousreply 65June 19, 2018 11:03 PM

There are billions of starving children.

Doctors tear children away from their mothers every day. It’s called abortion. Wheres the outrage?

by Anonymousreply 68June 20, 2018 1:17 AM

Millions of children starving and they're flying around on private planes to their multiple mansions!

Just like Jesus would have?

They use his revered name everyday to cover their gigantic SCAM !

by Anonymousreply 69June 20, 2018 1:24 AM

Republicans never shut up about abortion R68 .They ( you? ) have been boorishly whining about it forever. They just have no time left for the children they profess to want born.

by Anonymousreply 70June 20, 2018 1:50 AM

OP it will be hard to find Christian organization that will approve of Trump's policy around separating young children from their parent's especially their mothers. Just because Session quoted a scripture does not mean he is being support by religious leaders. This has a lot of potential to blow up in the face of Rethugs which is why they are trying to put a stop to it.

by Anonymousreply 71June 20, 2018 2:14 AM

Oh r68, we know it’s hard, but do try to stick to the topic at hand mmkay? We are talking about how putting KIDS in CAGES after they’ve been STOLEN is wrong. What does your fucking sky fairy think about these particular kids being stolen and put into cages, hmmmmmm? Does your “God” love that? Does it make Him happy? Try to stay on topic, I know it’s harder when you’re “touched.”

by Anonymousreply 72June 20, 2018 2:25 AM

These people claim asylum, but they could have done so in Mexico (in the case of Central Americans). Like the fake asylum seekers barging into Europe, these people are simply forum shopping for the country with the most benefits (the US).

by Anonymousreply 73June 20, 2018 2:40 AM

OP is delusional. Someone give her a klonopin. You do your position no good by making shit up.

by Anonymousreply 74June 20, 2018 2:44 AM

This is why I left liberalism. Too much emotion and outrage with no facts to back it up.

by Anonymousreply 75June 20, 2018 2:59 AM

abortion = this week's whataboutism

Should all of the money spent to house the "Tender Age" prisoners be spent on the Mexican Fairy Tale Wall?
