Best American cheapo candy bar

Well fatties, and crap candy fans? I edited off KitKat because, just no.

Twice. When I was a porker I used to eat the jumbo bag of mini twix. I gave up sugar because i was a pig with no self control. If I found out I was dying or an asteroid was heading towards earth I’d eat a garbage bag full.

Milky way.

by Anonymousreply 6June 17, 2018 12:36 AM

No Kit Kat? What kind of a bogus list is this?

Let's go vintage: O Henry, 5th Avenue, Mallo Cups and Clark Bars!

by Anonymousreply 7June 17, 2018 12:38 AM

Reese's

by Anonymousreply 8June 17, 2018 12:40 AM

I don't think either Sky Bar or Caramello belongs on this list. They're not terribly well-known or popular compare to some that you left off.

by Anonymousreply 9June 17, 2018 12:42 AM

Peppermint Patty.

by Anonymousreply 10June 17, 2018 12:42 AM

I remember as a kid, addicted to US TV shows, I always wanted to try the food people ate. For some reason I really really wanted to try a Hershey Bar, and in my late teens I finally got to the States and tried one. What a disappointment! It’s like eating a slab of margarine. Generally tasteless but with a disgusting tendeny to disintegrate into a layer of oil in the mouth.

American chocolate is vile.

by Anonymousreply 11June 17, 2018 12:43 AM

Clark Bar

by Anonymousreply 12June 17, 2018 12:44 AM

Snickers with almonds, or a Milky Way. I hear the heiress to the O'Henry candy bar fortune is a bra-less bitch.

by Anonymousreply 13June 17, 2018 12:46 AM

On the poll, I chose 3 Musketeers, because I loved those as a kid. As an adult, however, I became addicted to Hershey's cookies & cream bars. I'd buy them by the fistful, throw them into the freezer, then devour them the moment they were ice-cold.

I don't eat them much anymore because of eldergay weight gain. But I treat myself to a bar every now and then.

I never could understand the success of Milky Way or 3 Musketeers. Utterly bland and tasteless.

by Anonymousreply 15June 17, 2018 12:50 AM

Its Snickers. Salty, with a couple different tastes and textures.

by Anonymousreply 16June 17, 2018 12:52 AM

A bag of M & M’s. Preferably the large bag.

Hershey Bars have definitely gone down in quality, but I still love them. The butyric acid in the chocolate gives it a distinctive taste. My real favorite is Reese's Cups, though. The candy bars from Mars have never had any attraction for me. Every year, for Halloween, I'd end up giving most of my stash away, and just held on to the Hershey's products, and any black licorice I was lucky enough to be given.

by Anonymousreply 34June 17, 2018 1:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 38June 17, 2018 2:09 AM

Sorry to be a stickler and sound like a Protestant troubleshooter, but the Kit-Kat bar probably doesn't appear on the OP's list because it is a British invention. They are produced under license here in the states, It never was an American candy bar. Invented by Rowntree's of York, later Rowntree-Mackintosh, and Nestle purchased them in 1988. Nestle is a Swiss conglomerate. R24 I adore Mars bars, and cannot for the life of me figure out why they are not sold here in the states, even though they are an American company? For a short spell some Wal-Marts carried them. Caramello is Cadbury's too, so also British, but multi-national Mondelez now sadly.

by Anonymousreply 39June 17, 2018 2:09 AM

No Kit-Kats? Gimme a break, gimme a break...

by Anonymousreply 40June 17, 2018 2:11 AM

My grandmother was the first switchboard operator for the Heidi candy company in New York City. They made jujyfruit. There were always boxes of that stuff in her house. That and ju ju bes (which I thought were Jew beads when I was a kid).

Those were the days when lilac was a candy flavor. She would tell us that kids would go to the movies and stay there for hours and for a nickel would get a gigantic BUCKET of candies. She was proud that jujyfruits and ju ju bes were the best sellers for years.

She had one of those fox wraps that had the actual fox head on it.

by Anonymousreply 46June 17, 2018 3:50 AM

yes Italian. On the other hand Nestle bought world wide rights to some Starbucks products. Weird.

by Anonymousreply 47June 17, 2018 3:56 AM

Anyone who is still eating American Hershey process "chocolate" with the characteristic vomit / rancid butter taste, after they have tasted real chocolate, is a Deplorable. American chocolate is deplorable chocolate, in every sense.

by Anonymousreply 48June 17, 2018 3:56 AM

Interesting R47. Wafers and cookie-candy bars are quite popular in Italy and Austria, makes sense they recognised the goodness of Kit-Kats! I think Ferraro are the Nutella people too.

by Anonymousreply 49June 17, 2018 4:03 AM

R48 I never cared for Hershey R48. Maybe that off butter flavouring is the reason why. As the other poster upthread mentioned the butyric acid, I gagged a bit recalling the taste! Smells funny/dodgy too!

by Anonymousreply 50June 17, 2018 4:07 AM

Another Milky Way here. Snickers a close second.

by Anonymousreply 51June 17, 2018 4:14 AM

Snickers use to be really good in the 70s/80s, but now it and every other candy bar in the checkout section is terrible.

by Anonymousreply 52June 17, 2018 4:22 AM

As a kid, I loved Oh Henry, 100 Grand, and WhatChaMaCallIt.

by Anonymousreply 53June 17, 2018 4:26 AM

These are fat and sugar cooked up in the cheapest way, covered with a thin layer of cheap chocolate. So gross.

R52 I agree with you 100% regarding the Snickers bar. I think something did happen either late 80's or maybe the 90's. At first I thought perhaps they had only gone downhill in Britain, then after moving here I noticed they are indeed no longer the same. They used to have more of a real caramel flavour too, and did not seem as sicky sweet. BTW they used to be marketed under the name Marathon in Britain; I was further confused thinking the name change had something to do with the different taste. Glad I'm not the only one thinking this.

I haven't changed the ordering since 1980, which makes me an eldergay who wishes today's children were able to enjoy the same high-quality junk chocolate I hoarded so many Halloweens ago.

Does anyone remember Reggie Bar? It was a chocolate bar named after Reggie Jackson. It was actually good. It had peanuts and chocolate and caramel. Reggie you taste pretty good!

by Anonymousreply 72June 17, 2018 10:35 PM

I like M&M's with peanuts. In the 90's I would buy M&M's with almonds. I'm not sure they still sell the one with almonds.

The Reggie bar was also a fave. I almost forgot about that!

by Anonymousreply 80June 18, 2018 1:25 AM

I loved Whatchamacallit as a kid. It was probably my favorite candy bar. But it didn't use to have the caramel in it, and that throws the flavor out of whack, for me.

No longer buy it.

by Anonymousreply 81June 18, 2018 1:44 AM

Candy bars seemed to taste better when I was a kid, but I thought it was just part of growing up. Kinda reassured that they really did decline in quality. These days I buy dark-chocolate, peanut M&Ms or black Twizzlers. I don't buy those often, because once I open the bag, I'll just keep eating.

by Anonymousreply 86June 18, 2018 1:59 AM

I don't know why this thread managed to hurt me, but to be called a deplorable simply for liking the taste of Hershey's chocolate actually did. And I can usually sail past most of the DL insults.

I'll get over it, of course. I actually still like Hershey's chocolate (not as much as I used to), so fuck me up the ass (actually, no. I'm not a bottom. But I'm 100% gay).

by Anonymousreply 89June 18, 2018 2:14 AM

So, where do you hail from, R11?

I never recall any Hershey bar being that bad, but the almond-less version is rather nothing, IMO.

I don't think my favorites made the list. $100,000 Bar, Almond Joy, not certain of the name, but the Cadbury milk chocolate shortbread (gold foil wrapped), Ice Cubes. If one isn't going cheap, Merrie Olde wins hands down with Green & Blacks.

I'm a jelly candy junkie, really. I'll take a couple of packs of Chuckles to all of the above any day.

Troll poll. The whole poll is designed to elicit these responses. The “I’m leaving off Kit Kat just because” bit was the tell, since Kit Kats are almost universally loved and globally popular. No, hon, Reeses was not left off because it is not a “bar,” since Peppermint Patty was included, despite not being remotely in the same popularity league as Reese’s PBCs. But no Almond Joy or Mounds. Is it just me?

I used to fucking love mass-market candy bars when I was kid - and beyond!

But now I’m an eldergay - with just as sweet a tooth as ever! - I barely eat them.

Cos every time I do I’m disappointed.

They just don’t taste the same.

I tell myself I’ve just matured and my palate has changed - but I really think a lot of it is the recipes and ingredients have been altered over the years. I’m sure it’s been a race to the bottom to substitute ever cheaper indegrediemts - and many of them are actually smaller than they used to be as well.

I like nicer chocolate now - and the stuff they call chocolate in the cheap bars bears little relation to the real thing. And many of them taste really salty as well - they make me thirsty straight after eating one.

Lots of great memories - bit the reality now just doesn’t measure up :(

by Anonymousreply 130June 24, 2018 9:20 PM

[quote] but I really think a lot of it is the recipes and ingredients have been altered over the years.

It's not just candy. It used to be a sip from a can of Coke would give you a pleasant mild "burning" sensation in your mouth. That disappeared after the distraction of New Coke. KFC has little relation to the taste from the days the Colonel actually owned the company. And we know what happened to McDonald's fries when they switched the oil they used to fry them. If there was any way to use their chemistry sets to cheapen the product, they found it.
