The Gays and Tennis part 27

Grass court season up to Wimble-ton!

Is this where we talk about Mercedes' Cup size? I hear she's a DD.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 600July 23, 2018 6:00 PM

Mercedes Paz? She wasn't a Double DD when she beat defending champ Aranxta at the '90 French... but maybe she's had work done since.

by Anonymousreply 1June 16, 2018 4:07 AM

Is there anywhere to watch the matches online (Mercedes Cup)?

by Anonymousreply 2June 16, 2018 4:25 AM

Will Bernie's comeback keep on? Outside of the top 5, who are our grass court contenders and dark horses?

You can watch Mercedes Cup on tennistv.com or tennischannelplus.com

by Anonymousreply 16June 16, 2018 4:29 PM

damn it Nick! Another close loss to gramps. Hopefully Raonic can do something in the final other than lose

tGasquet always seems to weasel his way into a final of a small tournament.

I don't get the hate for Murray. He's bright, articulate, supportive of LGBT causes, more well-mannered than most on the tour, has a sly sense of humor, and he plays great tennis. And his sometimes surly demeanor is usually directed at himself, unlike some brats in the ATP.

by Anonymousreply 45June 17, 2018 4:43 PM

I didn’t get a sense of a spark in Fed this week at Stuttgart. He seemed to be going through the motions. But he did win over two good grass players in the semis and finals so perhaps he will peek at W and win his 21st GS. Amazing he is now number one again, but has to win next week to hold on to the number one ranking. After the clay season it’s hard to see anyone but Rafa as #1. I like Murray off court but find his and Djokers game boring.

by Anonymousreply 46June 17, 2018 5:21 PM

I've been down a You Tube rabbit hole watching some old tennis clips of the women this weekend, mostly 1985-2000, when I first started watching tennis. A couple of things really stand out to me about this era:

(1) the number of huge personalities in the sport, from Navratilova, Evert, Graf, Seles, Sabatini, Sanchez Vicario, Shriver, Mandlikova in the 80s, to Venus, Serena, Hingis, Davenport, Novotna, Capriati, Clijsters, Henin, and Mauresmo in the early 00s.

(2) the variety of playing styles. In the 80s you had serve volleyers like Navratilova and Shriner. Evert and Sanchez were baseliners, running down a lot of shots, Graf had an all-court style, and even baseliners like Sabatini and Seles had unique games, Sabatini with huge tops in shots, Seles with the angles from her double fisters. Even 15 years ago, there were a variety of styles, you wouldn't confuse Venus from Henin, Mauresmo from Hingis, or Capriati from Novota.

I think the change in racket technology made the game more interesting during this time, giving the women more power. But with the evolution of string technology and trying to slow down some of the surfaces, it feels like a lot of it has gone away.

by Anonymousreply 47June 17, 2018 5:36 PM

Was Seles really a baseliner?

by Anonymousreply 48June 17, 2018 5:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 58June 17, 2018 6:18 PM

Murray is the only inteligent player of the big four, fortunately for them Nadal and Federer opted for talking the less possible and it worked pretty well. I blame french federation for Gasquet's career. If you look the famous qtr match against Nadal on Les petits as when they were 12 he was fearless and aggressive, but the french are so needed of a champion that they really put him in the spotlight too soon. He was a shy 15 yo and he was receiving wc for big tournaments (something that spoiled Donald Young too) meanwhile Nadal was playing itfs and challengers to rise his ranking. I watched one match of Gasquet against Murray and during three games Richie was the perfect hitting machine, absolute perfection. Then he tanked and lost in two sets

by Anonymousreply 59June 17, 2018 6:23 PM

[quote]Was Seles really a baseliner?

Most definitely. Granted she would try to play on the baseline - or even inside - as opposed to Sabatini or Martinez who were four feet behind it. And Seles would try to get a short ball and attack. But her volley wasn't great, largely because she would hit a two-handed swing volley, so she really had to try to put away her first volley.

by Anonymousreply 60June 17, 2018 7:18 PM

Outside of my fantasies, is it realistic to assume that both RAFA and Dominic have had their asses pounded by someone at some point during their careers, no matter how strait they might be.

by Anonymousreply 61June 17, 2018 7:26 PM

I remember watching Evert vs Seles, which was Chrissie's last tour match win. It was the 89 US Open, so Seles was still really young - 15 or 16. A lot of fans and commentators predicted Seles would win that match because Chrissie's hadn't been playing that well in '89, and Seles actually beat her earlier in the year. But as Chrissie's often did, when she felt slighted or disrespected, she brought out her best tennis, and crushed Monica 0 and 2.

Anyway, while Monica wasn't playing well, she tried to mix up her game to change the momentum, and started throwing in these huge topspin moonballs. It was windy that day, so she had Chrissie's pinned to the backstop on some points with the wind and topspin. I remember at least one point Monica won because the ball jumped so high after it bounced that it went over Chrissie's head and into the stands. I remember thinking Monica might not win the match, but she was a pretty clever player, despite all of her early press being about her grunt and her giggle.

by Anonymousreply 62June 17, 2018 7:31 PM

That match changed the way Seles played the following year. Maybe it was a natural transition because she was very young, but 89 Seles was way more defenssive and used moonballs a lot more. The following year she became the hitting machine that everybody remember

by Anonymousreply 63June 17, 2018 7:46 PM

Seles wasn't afraid to mix up the pace though. I remember in the 91 US Open SF, she used some moon balls and junk balls on Capriati. At the time, everyone oohed and aahed over how Seles and Capriati just blasted the ball - which was true - but to me Seles was always more than that. I think one of her underreported weapons was her court sense and imagination. She wasn't just one speed (although she could play at that speed when necessary).

by Anonymousreply 64June 17, 2018 8:11 PM

Also amazing to think there were once 16 and 17 year olds winning Slams, and 14 and 15 year olds ranked in the top 10 or 20. Just checked, there are only three teenagers in the Top 100 currently (Bellis, Lapio, Kevin) and all are 19.

I'm sure the change in age restriction rules are the biggest reason, but we also have more over 30s in the sport than we ever did... so go figure.

by Anonymousreply 65June 17, 2018 8:32 PM

Yeah, I am not sure playing on grass with a hamstring he is not 100% sure of is, is wise, R43. He is also playing doubles. Let's hope he doesn't re-injure it. He is aware of that risk though and said that the rebuilt layer of muscle (no idea of the medical term) is very thin still even if it healed much quicker than doctors predicted.

by Anonymousreply 66June 17, 2018 9:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 67June 17, 2018 9:06 PM

R34, there is no way Rafa isn’t putting out with that guy doing the slapping. He is purposely flaunting that booty in the slapper’s face, and that slipper knows he’s found a hit slut for the night.

That short video, more than anything, seals it for me. Rafa is gay. Franxisca is a beard.

by Anonymousreply 68June 17, 2018 10:51 PM

Gasquet on the title of Federer in Stuttgart: "I'm not too surprised, it was better to come here ('s-Hertogenbosch)! I knew that Federer would go to Stuttgart so I did not register there, I confess. "

by Anonymousreply 72June 18, 2018 4:15 AM

R72 yes Gasquet has become a known small tournament whore the last several years. It's the only way he manages to keep winning titles. He's no longer a threat to win anything big.

ITA R68. Rafa is presenting, in pink no less.

by Anonymousreply 74June 18, 2018 11:57 AM

Bouchard loses in the final round of Birmingham qualifying to No. 77 Brady.

I know that she's a running joke around here, and I get that she was never going to sustain her 2014 level of Aus SF, Fre SF, Wim F. But for her to be barely holding on to a Top 200 ranking, and failing to qualify for main draw WTA events is much worse than she should be doing. I'm not sure what happened, there's no reason she shouldn't be hanging out in the 20-50 range.

To clarify, I'm not a fan or apologist. In fact, when I met her briefly in August 2014, she reeked of attitude and entitlement. But she is a better player than what we're seeing.

by Anonymousreply 75June 18, 2018 1:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 82June 18, 2018 4:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 83June 18, 2018 4:35 PM

I kind of have a feeling Federer isn't going to defend at Wimbledon this year. I hope Nadal doesn't win it, but he's due for a decent draw at Wimbledon. He's had tough draws the last several years and/or ran into someone playing really well. I don't think Nadal really looked that great at the French Open this year. He seemed vulnerable on a few days, but no one stepped up. His serve was particularly vulnerable. If he still struggles a bit with his serve, he could go out early again if he faces a big server. Still, I feel like Nadal is overdue for a better Wimbledon result and you can never count him out.

The best result would be a young gun having a breakthrough, but I can't see Zverev or Thiem winning at Wimbledon, at least not yet. Maybe a veteran like Cilic could take the title, or Raonic?

by Anonymousreply 84June 18, 2018 5:37 PM

I think it's time for new players. I'm not against Nadal or Federer winning a GS from time to time but tennis needs new faces and i think Zverev, Shapovalov, Tsitsipas and company are not Dimitrov, Tomic, Raonic or Kyrgios, they really want to win (and the fact that Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are older helps). After a couple of bad seasons Nadal was able to regain his intimidating power on clay, but everybody knows that he is vulnerable on grass (he always was), of course every round he pass on Wimbledon, the slower the court, more dangerous he become.

In women's Kostyuk is 15 yo and top 200. Twenty years ago it would be a total non event but now it's a rarity

by Anonymousreply 85June 18, 2018 6:15 PM

Sock loses again! 4 match losing streak. He's 5-12 on the year now but ranking still #14.

by Anonymousreply 86June 18, 2018 6:18 PM

That's Gottfried von Cramm, R82.

by Anonymousreply 87June 18, 2018 6:47 PM

I also think that Federer is not 100%. He has always been very cool when he plays but in Stuttgart he seemed like he did not care at all. I do not remember seeing him so detached. Maybe is the Nike negotiations. He has to be pissed at the way he is being treated.

by Anonymousreply 88June 18, 2018 6:49 PM

Gottfried von Cramm was the nearer we had of an openly gay tennis player. Great player, very interesting person. His life could make a great film

Federer's game was terrific in Stuttgart. Solid aggressive grass court tennis. Sheesh- his forehand and volley were lethal, he dropped service twice- he's hitting over his backhand, and his first tournament in 3 months. Oh, and he won with both Kyrgios and Raonic playing well. Suggest not taking him for granted. I do think it's a big ask for him to repeat at W. But when he is gone, there will be a huge void in the game. No one plays like him. No one can routinely hit drop volleys off the base line and change direction with the shot. No one comes close to his variety and no one moves forward as well. My guess is that a lot of you guys on this thread really don't know just how good he is! You'll never see it again in your lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 92June 18, 2018 7:37 PM

R92 And I'm okay with that. Appreciate him for how he elevates the game, but look forward to what comes next in tennis. Definitely not stuck on never wanting him to retire like you seem to be.

by Anonymousreply 93June 18, 2018 7:41 PM

Not at all R93- the end is near. Rather it makes me sad. But what a ride and what a career.

by Anonymousreply 94June 18, 2018 8:03 PM

I'll be sad to see Federer go. I can see how people think it's bad for the game how he and others have dominated so hugely but reckon we're lucky to have been able to witness his tennis in our lifetimes.

Don't worry, I'll "Mary!" myself.

by Anonymousreply 95June 18, 2018 8:07 PM

I just rubbed one out to that video of Rafa presenting.

by Anonymousreply 96June 18, 2018 8:17 PM

The problem are not Nadal and Federer, they had bad seasons and they were able to come back, the problem is the other players not stepping up and show real opposition. Sometimes were injuries (Del Potro) but in most cases were not being mentally strong or believing in their game. I don't want Nadal and Federer to retire before they were dethroned by other players. They are playing at a very good level but they are not near their peak and it will be good for tennis if there's a generational battle for the domination of the circuit.

by Anonymousreply 97June 18, 2018 8:23 PM

Don't get me wrong, R92. I definitely would love to see Federer repeat at the Big W and retire with the most Slams of anyone. I just have this feeling that he isn't going to repeat at Wimbledon. I had a feeling Nadal was going to repeat at RG, and he did (boo!), but I don't think Nadal will repeat at the US Open. I do think Nadal seems due for a strong Wimbledon.

I agree with all you wrote about Federer's game. I am very much appreciating it. I wish he would not have skipped the clay season. I think he had an outside shot at another RG last year and this year--an outside shot, but still a shot.

by Anonymousreply 98June 18, 2018 8:27 PM

R96- Vamos!

by Anonymousreply 99June 18, 2018 8:45 PM

I really hate a moonball unless someone does it to get back into the point. Otherwise it is a BS move.

by Anonymousreply 100June 18, 2018 9:05 PM

yeah I don't want Federer or Nadal to retire or be injured. I just want other players to start fucking beating them. Kyrgios almost Federer the other day. He could surprise at Wimbledon as his game really works on grass. I think it's safe to say at this point that it will be the next generation who could possibly dethrone the best 2 male players ever. The in-between generation has shown time and time again they just don't have the mental fortitude.

Someone like Dimitrov will only win a slam if someone else takes out Federer and Nadal for him. Same with Raonic.

Del Potro if he's healthy and keeps playing well will be a threat to win the USO but only if he wins his matches easily leading up the SF. His fitness and stamina is nowhere near Nadal or Federer's.

by Anonymousreply 101June 18, 2018 9:11 PM

I think moonballs are tremendous!

by Anonymousreply 102June 18, 2018 9:25 PM

Shopgirl lost to balding Mueller. Isn't he supposed to be contending for slams?

by Anonymousreply 103June 18, 2018 9:56 PM

That's the point I remember, R91! Evert couldn't even make a play on the ball because it bounced over her head into the stands. On CBS, the commentators (Summerall, Trabert, Carrillo - one of my favorite booth combos) were basically pleading with Chrissie to take some of those shots out of the air. But she was willing to wait Seles out because she (Seles) was having trouble with her game that afternoon.

I think moonballs can be effective to get back into the point, but also to change up the pace and give your opponent some junk. If you do it too much, it becomes easily attackable, but a few in a rally can really through off your opponents timing and rhythm. All's fair...

R79, I met Bouchard while I was covering an event as press/media. The top players typically have to make themselves available on the eve of the event to answer some media questions and promote the event locally. Bouchard was... well she wasn't rude, exactly, but didn't try to mask her feelings that she'd rather not be there. In her defense, she was probably pretty tired by that point in the year, and only 20 years old, but she was a little curt in her responses, and didn't leave many of us with warm fuzzy feelings. Appropriate that she's no longer included in those on site promos.

by Anonymousreply 105June 18, 2018 9:57 PM

R104 thanks! Have you interacted with any other players? If so, who were the nicest and the rudest?

by Anonymousreply 106June 18, 2018 10:08 PM

No one has been really rude, although some might pull the Bouchard bit of giving off an air of "I don't want to be here". Roddick...eh. He wasn't rude, but he just comes across to me as someone who has a really high opinion of himself, but he makes some self-deprecating remarks and people seem to eat it up. I get the sense that he thinks he's the greatest guy in the world, and... I just can't. Full disclosure: I've seen so many matches where he's been obnoxious to umpires and linesmen that I was predisposed to not really liking him.

The nicest I've met among active players is Petra Kvitova. Lucie Safarova comes to mind too. For players no longer on tour, Mauresmo and Davenport were always really polite and thoughtful, really considerate in their responses. Actually, Hewitt was fun to talk to as well, which surprised me. Always thought he'd be more surly.

There's a lot I haven't interacted with (Federer, Nadal, Serena to name the obvious) so don't read into their omission. I've done a lot more with WTA than with ATP.

A lot of players sort of give what they get, meaning if the press asks some dumb or boring questions, they'll give the standard, canned reply. If you ask something a little different, off-beat, thoughtful, etc. they'll generally be more honest and animated dealing with you. Another thing I've noticed is that some really become jaded over the years. Wozniacki and Stephens are a couple that were really fun when younger, but after years of doing the press thing, you can see that they're kind of over it. And to be fair, I think both have felt a little burned by the press in the past, so they're probably just more cautious about it all.

by Anonymousreply 107June 18, 2018 10:34 PM

R107 thanks again. Interestingly I had those impressions of the players you mentioned. I never got the love that Americans and Brits had for Roddick. He always seemed like a jerk. Kvitova and Safarova I've heard good things about them and I've also heard that Stephens and Wozniacki have become more guarded with time.

You said you haven't been around Serena, how about Venus? Sharapova? Ivanovic? Henin? Capriati? Hingis?

thanks again for sharing!

by Anonymousreply 108June 18, 2018 11:11 PM

Of the specific players you've asked about, Hingis, Ivanovic, and Henin.

Hingis: maybe a little like a female Roddick. I got "smug" from her. Professional, polite, but seemed to have a high opinion of herself.

Ivanovic: Seemed nice enough. Chatty, but in a really superficial way - meaning she'd say a lot, without saying much at all.

Henin: Was really quiet, guarded. Only interacted with her once, very briefly.

It probably doesn't even need to be mentioned, but with all of these interactions, the players were doing their job, it was just the off-court portion of it. I don't pretend to know how they are "in real life". In fact, you notice that right away with some, they'll enter a press room bubbly and chatting with their coach or family member, and then the interviewee persona switches "on". So Kvitova might be the nicest person out there, or just the one that is somehow more genuine or comfortable with the media. (Although based on her reputation with fellow players, I'd guess the former.)

by Anonymousreply 130June 19, 2018 3:56 PM

Murray broke in the first set thanks to a Kyrgios' double fault. That's fine but that second serve was "I do not give a flying fuck" kind of serve. He is infuriating.

by Anonymousreply 136June 19, 2018 5:48 PM

Džumhur must be fun in bed. I love how physical he is during matches.

Nick finally beats Murray but only because Murray is rusty, possibly not 100% physically. Kyrgios has to be the only player ever to have struggled more against Murray than he has against Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. It makes no sense that Murray is a boogeyman to Kyrgios

Azarenka's child custody situation must be settled as she's playing in Mallorca and just won her first round match over Voegele.

by Anonymousreply 137June 19, 2018 6:01 PM

Coric was not a good first round match for sure. To be honest i thought Borna would break faster, he used to be on the shadows of Gianluigi Quinzi when he was a kid, but then he had a very good junior career and some good results as pro, but he didn't totally make the next step to become a real contender. I hope Sascha will do well at Wimbledon, play concentrate from the beginning instead of playing 5 sets in every match Kyrgios is wasting his talent (he won't be the first one to do it). Federer even said that kyrgios reminds him of himself when he was younger. Now it's easy to forget how irregular was Roger when he was younger, he was able to defeat a top player in real fashion to lose the next round without a fight

by Anonymousreply 138June 19, 2018 6:01 PM

Both Kyrgios and Murray looked good today. Great to see them back.

Even though I'm a Sascha fan, I did find it a little amusing that he lost in Halle today. Sascha, of course, is paid to wear a Richard Mille watch; and Mille is one of the sponsors of the tourney(when the players sit down during the changeover, they sit their toned behinds down on his name).

I know every player has endorsements and sponserships; but a $700,000 watch just rubs me the wrong. It represents the worst kind of elitism, imo. What do you think? (Rafa wears one too.)

We all appreciate beautiful things; I have nothing against someone indulging themselves with a luxury watch or expensive piece of jewelry. But what kind of person would invest $700,000 in a watch? I realize the players don't own these watches; it's a sponsorship deal. But I still find it obnoxious. I wonder if any athlete has ever turned Mille down. Essentially telling him that's not the kind of image they would like to promote.

by Anonymousreply 153June 20, 2018 1:14 AM

I have a fever burning deep in my roots!

by Anonymousreply 154June 20, 2018 1:19 AM

Agreed, R151, though tennis has always been considered an elitist sport that caters to that kind of conspicuous consumption. That's another reason why it's great to see the Williams sisters, Tiafoe, Escobedo and others who didn't grow up in country clubs and daddy-funded tennis academies prevail over entitled spoiled brats like Bouchard and Gulbis. Anyone who spends $700k on a watch deserves a Marie Antoinette kind of fate.

by Anonymousreply 155June 20, 2018 1:30 AM

R155 Haha, thanks for your reply. Tennis is only sport that I truly love; but I've been feeling a little jaded lately. It seems most players make more money on sponsorships and appearance fees than on prize money (unless they start winning Grand Slams, where the big money is).

I know none of this is nothing new; but I'm so much more aware of it now. It's hard not to be with social media, etc. Sometimes I think I should spend less time watching these millionaire kids and more time at my local park playing tennis. I do love the sport.

by Anonymousreply 156June 20, 2018 1:56 AM

R156 * I know none of this is new.

by Anonymousreply 157June 20, 2018 2:29 AM

Have we talked about Nicholas Kicker getting banned for 6 years for match fixing? 3 if he behaves well. He's 25 now. Apparently he fixed matches in 2015 when he was on the challenger tour. Part of the punishment is because he didn't cooperate during the investigation

by Anonymousreply 158June 20, 2018 2:30 AM

R158 Remember a few years ago when the match-fixing scandal made headlines around the world? The story broke on the eve of the Australian Open;and it was rumored that too-ranked players were involved. Then the story just sort of fell off the radar.

by Anonymousreply 159June 20, 2018 2:44 AM

R159 yes that was an interesting episode. Don't forget Agassi saying the tour let him off the hook when he went through his meth period.

On the other hand they did give Sharapova a punishment which I was surprised by. Many thought she'd get nothing but a slap on the wrist

by Anonymousreply 160June 20, 2018 3:29 AM

Last year, Alexandr Dolgopolov was being investigated for match-fixing. I can't remember all the details; but I think it concerned a match in Winston-Salem. They (tv commentators) said he was being cooperative with the investigation(had handed over his phone). I' m curious if there was any resolution to this case,or if he's still being investigated.

by Anonymousreply 166June 20, 2018 7:48 PM

I thought Zverev was injured?

Them always has scratchy results off of clay. I'm not expecting much from him the rest of the year.

Federer should win this easily, unless Coric pulls a surprise.

by Anonymousreply 167June 20, 2018 7:56 PM

I don't think tanking on previous tournaments mean a thing. Muguruza was playing very bad on grass before winning Wimbledon. And Federer is the fave, but on a good day i think there are a good bunch of player who can defeat Federer right now. In tennis transitions are sometimes very abrupt, Federer was supposed to win the whole GS and suddenly Nadal was dominating, when people started to think Nadal could win the four GS the same year Djokovic became the dominant player. Sometimes a good victory can change everything (Djokovic became a different player after winning the Davis Cup)

by Anonymousreply 168June 20, 2018 8:05 PM

Kohlschreiber could beat Federer on a good day when it's best of 3. Coric too.

by Anonymousreply 171June 21, 2018 11:55 AM

Oh. Kohlschreiber out. You can disregard everything I say because I am clearly a moron. I always give Kohl-etc a "dangerous lurker" status, but he's even worse than Fernando Verdasco in terms of hot/cold and being totally unpredictable.

by Anonymousreply 172June 21, 2018 12:16 PM

i wanted to argue you about Khol. Philip Khol used to dangerous lurker during 2009 to 2012 but not in present times .Now He is a lame s player who is more than happy to be between Top 20 to 50 . Remember million of match points he wasted during match against Misery in Dubai ?

R184 lol so true. He really is an escape artist.

by Anonymousreply 186June 21, 2018 5:08 PM

I agree, R168, there are a lot of players who can beat Federer on grass if they have a good day or he is off his game. I wish that were also true about Nadal on clay, but alas it isn’t. I wonder how many more French Opens Nadal will win before he calls it a day? Anyway, I don’t think Federer winning Wimbledon this year is at all a sure thing. I’m not even sure if he’ll defend Halle.

by Anonymousreply 187June 21, 2018 5:24 PM

Safarova straight sets Azarenka in Mallorca

by Anonymousreply 190June 21, 2018 6:14 PM

Young Grigor is not that young anymore. One of the biggest wastes of talent on atp. He was on the verge of defeating Federer and Nadal early in his career but tanked those matches and that defined his whole career till now. And he can't even wait for the retirement of the big four because i don't think he'll be in the group that dominate after that. It's there any proof that Khachanov is an homophobe or just speculation for being russian? because sometimes a player of an homophobic country is very gay friendly while a player from a gay friendly country is very homophobic (anyway i think most of them are smart enough to no saying a thing about it). Even politics aren't a clue, Juan Carlos Ferrero is very conservative but he is very pro gay rights too

Garbiñe lost, she could be an amazing player if she had a brain and better attitude. Of course she'll play Wimbledon and if she pass the first round she'll become a contender (fortunately for her she is always on the right mood on the big events, it's a pity that she never came to them on good form)

by Anonymousreply 191June 21, 2018 6:20 PM

the in-between ATP generation is not going to dominate. The young guns are really starting to come on strong now. Zverev and Thiem are leading the way and you have Khachanov, Coric, Tiafoe, Tsitsipas and others. Dimitrov, Nishikori and the others of their lame age group might sneak a slam in the next 2 years but their window is very small now. Kyrgios is not a super young gun but not the same age as Dimitrov/Nishikori. Kyrgios could definitely win Wimbledon, the USO and/or AO if he is healthy and in the right frame of mind

by Anonymousreply 192June 21, 2018 6:34 PM

Which Zverev, R192?

by Anonymousreply 193June 21, 2018 6:38 PM

[quote] Kyrgios could definitely win Wimbledon, the USO and/or AO if he is healthy and in the right frame of mind

Never going to happen . He is full of hate . He may win smaller tournaments[May be even Master 1000 by luck] But a grand slam ? No chance.

He doesn't have fitness level require to win a grand slam .He is more fragile than DelPo, Milos and Kei

I wonder how Red state Democrats will spin their almost open border policy in coming mid term after they endorsed new bill

by Anonymousreply 195June 21, 2018 6:50 PM

I remember Filip Dewulf a belgian tennis player, the guy was very talented but when questioned tennis never was a priority, his girlfriends, his friends, having fun. The result was obvious, he never reached his potential and his career went doewn way fast. Of course that suits more Gulbis than Kyrgios, but Nick is in a similar position. He can change and he has talent to do it but i don't think he'll do it. In tennis you need to take your chances. You can be a dominant player one day and be one of many the next. Kyrgios could end being a joke like Tomic

by Anonymousreply 196June 21, 2018 6:53 PM

wow just saw the highlights...Paire's shitty (probably the worst in the top 200) forehand really let him down in the tiebreak. His grip is just so abnormal that he has trouble timing it correctly when pressured

Which is a shame since he is so exciting to watch when he is "ON"

by Anonymousreply 198June 21, 2018 7:04 PM

The Paire's gay rumours came from his close friendship with Stan Wawrinka. They are (or at least were) very close friends and spend a lot of time together and i think people loved to speculate (specially because Stan was married)

by Anonymousreply 199June 21, 2018 7:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 200June 21, 2018 7:08 PM

I'm expecting a Dimitrov/Dani breakup if Wimbledon does not go well. Grigor has sucked for the entire season after he profited last year by not having to beat Nadal, Federer, Djokovic or Murray en route to his Cincinnati and WTF titles. It's time for Dani to hop onto another cock anyway.

by Anonymousreply 209June 21, 2018 10:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 210June 21, 2018 10:29 PM

R192, Thiem will be 25 in a couple of months. He's closer in age to Dimitrov than he is to the Next Gen.

by Anonymousreply 211June 21, 2018 10:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 221June 22, 2018 4:06 PM

Who's the bottom, though? Both have flat asses and are beanstalks. As someone said here earlier, Zverev has fewer curves than a Texas highway.

by Anonymousreply 230June 22, 2018 7:39 PM

I wonder what will happen if Germany and Brazil face each other in soccer world cup in coming days .

Last time Germany thrashed Brazil by 7/1 in 2014 If something like that happen once again then Sasha will have a field day annoying hell out of Melo

However I think Melo secretly like When Sasha makes fun of him

by Anonymousreply 237June 22, 2018 8:01 PM

For the life of me I can't seem to easily distinguish Sasha and Mischa by their names. Always have to stop and think, "Wait - which one is that?"

by Anonymousreply 238June 22, 2018 8:02 PM

No one talks about the straight Zverev on DL.

by Anonymousreply 239June 22, 2018 8:06 PM

Nobody cares about Mischa. How could you confuse him with Sascha, DL-fave and starlet par excellence?

by Anonymousreply 240June 22, 2018 8:09 PM

R238, think of Sasha as “Zander” which are both variants of Alexander and start with almost the SAme sound. Mischa starts with the same letter as Mikhail.

by Anonymousreply 241June 22, 2018 8:12 PM

R238 - Sasha is the younger, tall, blonde Zverev. Mischa is the older, darker hair/skinned brother.

by Anonymousreply 242June 22, 2018 9:27 PM

R229 Anyone who is really paying attention knows.

The only ones who seem oblivious to the coupling of Sascha and Melo are Sascha's young female fans. Even some of the older girls are in denial. Actually, their worst fear is finding out that Sascha has a girlfriend. They like Melo; I think they'd prefer him over a gf. Really!

We hate Doper Sharapova but we love Doper Cilic!

by Anonymousreply 266June 23, 2018 9:37 PM

We don't hate Sharapova because she's a doper. We hate her because she's an arrogant, dismissive, calculating, lying, conceited bitch.

by Anonymousreply 267June 23, 2018 9:47 PM

No, r267, we hate her because she’s a doping cunt. We also hate Cilic for the same reason—but also a little bit because he threw his granny under the bus.

by Anonymousreply 268June 23, 2018 10:54 PM

To each his/her own, R268. I hated her before she doped. So let's get off the we bus, with or without granny under it.

by Anonymousreply 269June 23, 2018 11:00 PM

Or got caught for doping, that is.

by Anonymousreply 270June 23, 2018 11:01 PM

Sock entered Eastbourne qualifying to get extra matches. He lost first round in straight sets to #316 Daniel Brands, a journeyman who was briefly #51 several years ago. That's 5 losses in a row for Sock now though luckily for him the ATP only counts main draw matches in their official records. The ATP notes all matches in a player's activity though. The WTA counts every match, future, challenger, qualifying and of course main draws. The ATP and WTA do not count Hopman Cup matches even though the ITF site does (or at least it used to but I haven't looked in several years).

by Anonymousreply 271June 24, 2018 1:55 AM

Sharapova is a total diva but her bitchy comments are really funny (even if that's not her intention). I can't stand the grunting/screaming (but Vika is worst, wich is a pity because i like Vika's game). The doping situation (like questionable comments) depends a lot of the image of the player. Nadal made sexists comments and nothing happened but when Djokovic said something similar people reacted really bad. And we have Gasquet's doping case, his excuse was extremely lame (and i said that believing that coke shouldn't be considered doping because a tennis player doesn't benefit at all of its consume) but people was totally eager to forgive and forget because he is a beloved player (and his excuse even became trendy because Shawn Barber used the same excuse with the same results, in Barber's case the woman even declared in his favour, and curiously six months later he came out of the closet)

by Anonymousreply 314June 24, 2018 9:19 PM

so glad Coric won today. Federer looked his age though. I think he was a bit tired from the Kudla match yesterday but Coric did play well. It's good to see him finally get another title. Coric was more aggressive than usual, volleyed well and kept with the Hewitt/Nadal/Murray/Djokovic tactic of pressuring Federer's backhand.

Coric should have beaten Federer in IW this year but choked. I was shocked he managed to win after dropping the second set. Hopefully he can do well at Wimbledon too

by Anonymousreply 315June 24, 2018 9:23 PM

What are your thoughts regarding Ernesto Escobedo, American tennis player? Does he have the skills to break out, or will he just falter and fail?

by Anonymousreply 316June 24, 2018 10:33 PM

Was the roof closed today in Halle at Roger's insistence? It wasn't raining and it wasn't that hot.

by Anonymousreply 317June 24, 2018 10:41 PM

We also have another first time titlist in the WTA. Tatjana Maria def. defending champ Sevastova in Mallorca. Nadal was also practicing there this week.

R316 Escobedo has nice groundstrokes and power, decent serve. He's not a great mover or volleyer. He'll need to improve those to move further up the rankings.

WTF Stan ?

by Anonymousreply 326June 25, 2018 5:39 PM

I am glad I missed the match

by Anonymousreply 327June 25, 2018 5:40 PM

I don't know if Wawrinka's knee is not fully healed or he just hasn't been able to regain his pre-surgery form but he's struggling this year. Murray seems to have recovered from his hip surgery pretty well so far.

by Anonymousreply 328June 25, 2018 5:57 PM

Stan needs time and grass is far from being his best surface. Murray on the other hand seems quite ready to cause trouble. Wimbledon is simply too soon but probably for the US Open if he keeps progressing he could cause some trouble in his draw

by Anonymousreply 329June 25, 2018 8:42 PM

After seeing Federer's loss to Coric, I'm more convinced than ever that he won't repeat at Wimbledon this year.

by Anonymousreply 330June 25, 2018 8:45 PM

Fed surely showed his age in Halle. Hopefully he will rest up, he did play a lot of tennis after being off for so long. I thought they said Murray was having issues late in he hits set against Kyrgios, so I don’t know how well he will do with best of five. The draw should be very interesting. I wonder if Serena will be seeded and if so where? #8 or #16 or #32?

by Anonymousreply 331June 25, 2018 8:55 PM

Even though Fed lost, he still has incredible shot selection and movement. He could've easily beat Coric, could have went either way. That said, glad Porna won. Plus his coach is really hot. Did anyone notice supermodel Eva Herzagova was handing out the trophies?

[quote]Katrina Adams, USTA Token President, wants Serena to be seeded at the US Open she's advocating to not follow the WTA rankings exclusively but to consider pregnant women who've come back.

I disagree with your description of Adams as a Token USTA President. But that aside, I don't know why she's brining this up now.

Serena is currently ranked around No. 180, but with 315 ranking points, she's only about 1100 points away from being seeded without any assistance. With Wimbledon, the Canadian Open, and Cincinnati still in play, that's not an unreasonable goal. (For instance, a Wimbledon SF + Cincinnati QF + Canadian QF would give her 1210 points.)

Plus, Clijsters returned from pregnancy and won majors and reached No. 1 without any assistance. I'm not totally opposed to the concept, but it irritates me that it was never an issue until *now*.

And Kyrgios gets in trouble again...

[www.mediaite.com] Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios got in hot water when he simulated self-pleasure with a water bottle during a match.

It happened during a semi-final matchup against Marin Cilic at The Queen’s Club Championships in London on Saturday.

Kyrgios lost to Cilic but thanks to his obscene aquatic antics he is also out €15,000. That money, the amount of the fine, will come out of the prize money he has already won for the Fever-Tree Championships.

The fine is for inappropriate behavior and amounts to over $17,000 (USD).

In the video of the pantomimed penile pleasuring, Kyrgios is in full view of the camera as he simulates jerking off on the water bottle, complete with a little squirt. It is quick and subtle but it is hard to deny the masturbatory mime job at hand.

Novotna was so talented, unfortunately she was a headcase. Her chokes were epic but her tennis was amazing

by Anonymousreply 346June 26, 2018 7:06 PM

So true, R346. I remember in 1998, the year Novotna won Wimbledon, she beat Hingis in that Wimbledon's semi-finals. She faced Hingis again that same year in the US Open semis. She won the first set and was playing fabulous tennis. Then out of nowhere she couldn't get a ball in play. She lost the 2nd and 3rd sets and Hingis got to the final. It showed me that she held it together for that one Wimbledon, but that was all she could muster. She really should have been in that US Open final playing like she did in that first set.

by Anonymousreply 347June 26, 2018 7:10 PM

Perhaps, R343, though Kyrgios might not agree.

Lisicki had the potential of being a top but unfortunately for her she doesn't have brains to get with her good shots. If she can't do it on grass she must be at a very poor form

by Anonymousreply 353June 26, 2018 8:33 PM

Barthel was never a Top 20 player, but she got close. Interesting to see she's having to play qualies. Has she been injured?

Young is having a rotten 2018.

by Anonymousreply 356June 26, 2018 9:13 PM

To be fair, Young had a pretty shitty 2017 too, at least the last 6 months of the year. Not only did he lose in Wimbledon qualifying today, he failed to defend his 2017 Eastbourne points, which will drop him out of the Top 200.

And I hope Serena draw Cibulkova in first round . i think that will fair

by Anonymousreply 362June 27, 2018 11:13 AM

Regarding Young, it often seems to me that he's not in the best physical condition--for top-flight tennis. At his best, his game is great to watch when he's utilizing his leftiness and overall learned prowess. But that temper, and on court, I notice he serves a lot of double faults, and often at crucial times. He's not that old, but can he again claim a top 50 or 100 spot?

by Anonymousreply 363June 27, 2018 11:50 AM

Barthel was pretty amazing some years ago, very clean and strong hitting (unfortunately her mentality was not that great). I watched her last year and she didn't seem the same player. Very very average. Young is the kind of player that was royaly screwed by his father. I know he was supposed to be the next best thing after winning AO at 15 but the truth is everybody with a brain knew he was going to struggle because he is not a physically strong player (and even less at 16). He opted for the easy route (Gasquet route) instead of the hard route (Nadal route) with the difference that Gasquet was able to take profit of all those wc at big tournaments while Young only got his confidence gone after all the heavy loses. Years after that he continue to play like a junior, with some amazing points and zero consistency. In Spain was a similar case with Carlos Boluda, till 14 he was simply the best european player ever (his results were even better than Nadal and Gasquet at his age). His parents thought they had a mine of gold and fired his coach and everything went south. He was strong but small, but what made him an amazing player was his confidence, and all that was gone with all the changes and injuries. Right now he is 25 and he didn't quit, and he is top 300 for the first time. I watch him in an interview and i feel pity for the guy, he said that a lot of people went to his matches only to see the future star fail. I hope some day he will be able to reach top 100 and play GS.

And about Serena, she is really good on grass and frankly i don't want her play Kvitova or Garbiñe in the first round. If she is not at her best she will be defeated soon but on Wimbledon i think she can make it to the second week like on RG (even further with the right draw)

by Anonymousreply 364June 27, 2018 11:57 AM

R364, do you think Young recovers and reenters the top 100 or more? He's bounced around the rankings for years, for reasons you mentioned. He's still relatively young, so there's that. I saw him as a junior, and he was phenomenal. Also, can you refresh me about his father? I see his mother at the matches, but is the father also there?

At Wimbledon, hoping Mmoh makes it to the main draw (for my own aesthetic reasons), but a little upset that he took out Rubin whom I'd love to see get some traction so he doesn't continue to languish in the futures and main draw qualifying.

by Anonymousreply 365June 27, 2018 12:16 PM

I think the problem with his father (if my memory doesn't fail) was simply that he wanted to cash on the new young star as soon as possible. Maybe it was not even a greedy movement just the fact that they weren't rich, i don't know, but the path he decided Donald to take was a big mistake. AO junior is a bit misleading, the amount of top juniors that don't play there is quite high so it's the junior GS easier to win (not that it's easy, it's simply that there's less competence than in the other three). He won really young wich is not that common for boys. When you win you get wc to atp (or wta) but for a player like young it would be better to play small tournaments, built his game an gain confidence. the truth is that he had to go back to play juniors, he even won wimbledon two years later. Sometimes winning too soon is not the best. Pavlyuchenkova suffered a similar fate, she won Australia but she was not able to make an inmediate transition on pro tour. I think she even won Australia a second time. But winning too young put the player in a difficult position unless he or she is able to cause some damage on the pro tour. Losing too many matches could end destroying confidence and it could be even worse to play juniors again (only to not getting good results). Hopefully people behind Cori Gauff take good care of her (because she is barely 14) There's a good while since the last time a watched Young so i don't know his chances of a come back. Lately he was more in the news for his fights with Harrison than any other thing.

American boys born in 1998 were really good i remember Les petits as being totally dominated for american players (Tornado Ali Black was runner up in the girls, i remember people talking about her rivaldry with Maria Shishkhina but then both faded, i suppose they had injuries). Of course being very good at a young age doesn't mean a thing if there's no progression, Hanna Orlik and Michelle Larcher de brito were amazing very young, way better than Garbiñe Muguruza (who was clearly behind of people like Mldenovic or Babos) but now is Garbiñe the one with GS

by Anonymousreply 366June 27, 2018 12:40 PM

Cibulkova is not even a Wimbledon contender, let's be honest. I bet you the other seeded women are THRILLED that Serena won't be a floater who could land in their first or second round of the draw. Serena played plenty of grand slams during her numerous comebacks and wreaked havoc on seeds in the past. It's fun to watch but I understand why Wimbledon seeded her.

by Anonymousreply 371June 27, 2018 5:09 PM

[quote]let's be honest. I bet you the other seeded women are THRILLED that Serena won't be a floater who could land in their first or second round of the draw.

No they won't . And if they do then they are not paying attention to the fact that Serena is always very vulnerable in initial few rounds than in the later stage .

It will be easier for Yung Yung LEE to defeat Serena in first round than it will be for Petra Kvitova or Simona Help in final rounds .

A very consistent Help. Woz , Kerber , Garcia or even Konta can defeat an error ridden Serena in first round but in semi finals or finals it will be a totally different story.

In 2016 Wimbledon. Christina McHale [Ryan Harrison sister in law] almost defeated Serena in 2nd round . Serena some how survived because McHale didn't had armory or experience to finish the job .

But in later rounds Serena almost Vanquished Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Vesnina and straight setted Kerber in the final. Do you really think Serena would have survived in 2nd round against any of these three players ?

by Anonymousreply 372June 27, 2018 5:29 PM

Kyle won first set against Misery. Can he please finish the job? He says Misery is his idol and mentor . I hope too "much respect" doesn't comes in his way of defeating Misery

by Anonymousreply 373June 27, 2018 5:33 PM

Yes, Serena (like Nadal) is way more vulnerable in the first rounds. Once she gets rhythm she became dangerous even if she is not in top form and a good player in good form is needed to defeat her. The fact that most players follow Serena's pattern of play helps her a lot because she is better than the rest doing what she does. To defeat Serena is better if you don't play like her, because if not you have to outhit her, and that's not easy and most players get intimidated to play against her in the final rounds (Garbiñe is probably the only top who gets motivated playing against Serena, but that's probably because Serena was her idol)

by Anonymousreply 374June 27, 2018 5:56 PM

Kyle did it

by Anonymousreply 375June 27, 2018 5:58 PM

R372 Serena is more vulnerable when she is seeded in the opening rounds. When she's not seeded, she's usually a lot more sharp and focused. Just look at Serena's career when she was unseeded and all the top seeds she defeated. The results don't lie. You won't find any players who say they're more afraid of Cibulkova than Serena. No one wants either in the first 2 rounds but they know when Serena is on she can straight set anyone.

As I was going through the draws, I was happy to see Mmoh, but couldn't find a list of which five players pulled out of the draw. Some of these guys--I like them, follow them, hope for the best for them, but they have to help me out by winning more, too.

by Anonymousreply 434June 29, 2018 1:07 PM

ESL,

It's optics. It's also cyclical. It's been stated here often by others here that there were plenty of periods in the sport when the women personalities and games were much more interesting than the men's. It was during those times that I simply looked at the guys as eye candy, but getting my court drama from the women. Now, granted, for a long time, it's the men who have more intrigue. It can and will change again at some point. I don't think the baby should be thrown out with the bathwater right now.

Also, poor RBA. I wonder if Murray will still play. Anyone figure out why Paire is trending? Maybe it's simply a Brit thing and because he's drawn Murray. Or that beard which does him no favors, especially in the summer.

to get ready for the upcoming USO series, I present highlights from 1 of the most entertaining matches of 2014: Ivanovic def. Sharapova 6-2 5-7 7-5 in Cincinnati. Yes, the infamous "check her blood pressure" match. Ivanovic started the match playing brilliantly, going up 6-2 5-2 before Sharapova came back with 5 straight games to take the second set. The third set went back and forth between them. Sharapova even had match point while serving at 5-4 but Ivanovic prevailed in the end. Both hit some great shots throughout. The crowd was so into it and making lots of noise after most of the points. Ivanovic was 1 of the players Sharapova HATED to lose to and the handshake was very quick at the end lol

in Gstaad, Stosur sweeps Schiavone in a former RG final rematch. Bouchard wins a chokefest against coming-back-from-injury-and-winless-in-2018 Bacsinszky. Patti Schnyder gets a main draw win!

In Newport, Mahut def. Harrison via retirement in second set. Sela def. Tomic who qualified, and Muller def. Baghdatis

In Bucharest, top seed Sevastova survives in a 3 set tiebreak and Zvonareva gets a main draw win

In Bastad, Verdasco wins. The next gen Ymer brothers were also in action. The younger Mikael won while his older brother Elias lost

In Umag, next gen 17 year old Auger-Aliassime gets his second main draw win. DL fave Marterer wins. DL fave Fucsovics destroys Paire

It's curious that the habit of not going on vacation with girlfriend and going instead with hot male friends create a lot of gay rumours for Cristiano Ronaldo but not for Rafa Nadal who does exactly the same

by Anonymousreply 490July 18, 2018 10:44 AM

You're right, I've never heard a single gay rumour about Nadal.

*bursts out laughing*

R480 Not enough shots from behind.

by Anonymousreply 492July 18, 2018 10:51 AM

R491: Of course there are gay rumours about Nadal, but C Ronaldo's gay rumours are in mainstream media. Nadal had to face some unconfortable questions about his relationship with his girlfriend who he refused to answer (he has no reason to comment his personal life or the kind of relationship he has) but i red articles about C Ronaldo's supposed homosexuality or his visits to his supposed boyfriend. The speculation about Nadal never reached that level (not even close). The rumours about C Ronaldo are well known, most people if they are questioned about Nadal don't know anything about those kind of rumours

by Anonymousreply 493July 18, 2018 10:58 AM

Rafa and the gf have been dating since 1995 and they don't live together. Obviously his devout Catholic faith prevents him from entering into a relationship where the flesh is weak. They are waiting for marriage.

Also I vote we make Stefanos our new Thiem or Zverev/Marcello. At least for now - he’s handsome, sensitive, intelligent , and you know, more likely.....

by Anonymousreply 499July 18, 2018 5:33 PM

R493, Rafa has been called out in print for being gay, but that was years ago. Since then, Rafa has been reserved and guarded. He doesn't really do personal interviews or invite people to focus on his personality. Ronaldo is much more extroverted and seems to revel in seeing how much he can get away with. And, yes, they both seem to have harems of good-looking men around them.

by Anonymousreply 500July 18, 2018 5:44 PM

If Stefanos can improve his fitness and consistency, he can be a top player. He's only 19 so I give him a break on being scrawny. It's unusual for a young male tennis player to debut on the tour already with a physique

Ruud is quite promising. Ferrer was dominating the match, but then he lost 9 games in a row

by Anonymousreply 521July 19, 2018 8:42 PM

I think Ferrer is done. At 36, he's ranked around No. 60, but defending half of his ranking points at the upcoming Canadian Open and Cincinnati events. Expect him to drop out of the Top 100 before the US Open.

by Anonymousreply 522July 19, 2018 8:55 PM

R522: Ferrer is a very hard working player, but it's over. He is still fit but maybe his paternity made him lose focus or it's a simple question of age (others with bigger weapons have something to compensate but he always relied in his speed and his fighting spirit)

by Anonymousreply 523July 19, 2018 9:02 PM

Last year in Montreal, Ferrer took Federer to 3 sets before losing in the 3rd round. The following week in Cincinnati, he beat Carreno Busta and Thiem back-to-back to reach the semis, where he barely lost to Kyrgios, in two tiebreaks.

I went to his first round US Open match, where he was in the section of the draw that Murray pulled out of, and Cilic (who had pulled out of Cincy two weeks earlier) was the highest seed. I thought given his form on US hardcourts and soft draw, this could be Ferrer's chance to go deep, and go out from the sport on a high. After taking the first set from Mikhail Kukushkin, he took a medical timeout and won only six more games in the match. He hasn't won a Grand Slam match since.

I think I jinxed him.

Side note: I also went to Mirjana Lucic's first round match thinking she could have a deep run like she did in the 2017 Australian. While she at least won the match in a 3rd set tiebreak vs. Puig, she has only won two matches since. In fact, she's only played in three events since last year's US Open. I'm serious in that I think I jinx the players I go to root for.

Any matches that people want me to attend at this year's Open?

by Anonymousreply 524July 19, 2018 10:26 PM

[quote] Murray pulled out

That is a very distracting phrase.

by Anonymousreply 525July 19, 2018 10:31 PM

Ferrer has a grinding game but he's not as powerful as Nadal and he's old now. He'll likely retire soon.

I think Lucic has been injured

by Anonymousreply 526July 19, 2018 10:34 PM

Yes, please R524, please attend matches featuring: Djokovic, Sandgren, Isner, Querrey, Zverev, A.; Sharapova, Bouchard, Donaldson, Kyrgios, Sock, Pospisil, Stakhovsky, Dolgopolov, and Harrison, C. TIA!

R524 Serena's first round match

by Anonymousreply 528July 19, 2018 10:35 PM

R527, why don’t you like Sock and Popsicle?

by Anonymousreply 529July 19, 2018 10:39 PM

Sock just seems surly on the court, and he seems like he's part of the other MAGA group of Americans that I've listed. I probably should walk that one back, though, since it was more perception than what's actually been reported by the media. And the C needs to be changed to an R for Harrison. Pospisil "liked" some obnoxious MAGA political tweets posted by Isner, I think it was.

by Anonymousreply 530July 19, 2018 10:59 PM

Is Pospisil a Canadian deplorable?

by Anonymousreply 531July 19, 2018 11:10 PM

Glad Pospisil lost today. I like Ramanathan's game. He's tenacious.

by Anonymousreply 532July 20, 2018 1:05 AM

R527: Come on, Pospisil is in a slump (a very long one), Poor guy was considered promising not so long ago. And C Harrison was plagued with injuries, it seems a little harsh wating him to tank. The guy was supposed to be a promising star, but he didn't even was able to enjoy a good junior career due to injuries. Let him enjoy himself now that he is getting closer to top 100 (and by closer i men top 200)

by Anonymousreply 533July 20, 2018 12:20 PM

I wonder if C Harrison is less of an asshole than R Harrison, like the inverse of A Zverev and M Zverev, i.e. younger brother being a good guy with the Harrisons and older brother being the good guy with the Zverevs, and the higher-ranked brother in both families being the major asshole.

by Anonymousreply 534July 20, 2018 12:52 PM

R534: Why are people so harsh on Zverev. Yes, he is bratty and cocky, but that's nothing new in young players, in fact in the next gen there are more players like Zverev than players like Tsitsipas. That behaviour is annoying but it's way more annoying in older players (the young ones have time to change) and there are a good bunch of older players with similar behaviour. Zverev is not Hewitt at least not now

by Anonymousreply 535July 20, 2018 12:55 PM

There's a difference between brattiness, cockiness, and being a major dick no matter what the age. When a player screams at an umpire that he's a "fucking moron" and yells out "I own this fucking court" after winning a match, that crosses the line from bratty cockiness to major dickishness.

by Anonymousreply 536July 20, 2018 1:17 PM

R536: I watched Nadal screaming at umpires (and the umpire was right) and nobody thinks he is a bad behaved player

by Anonymousreply 537July 20, 2018 2:05 PM

R530, Jack Sock is Deplorable-Adjacent.

[quote]He said he did not have time to vote in last year’s [presidential] election and is not entirely up to speed on national politics, though he would like to be.

by Anonymousreply 538July 20, 2018 2:51 PM

Speak for yourself, R537. Nadal can definitely be an ass when he doesn't agree with a call, and nobody's condoning that as acceptable behavior. But when has he called an umpire a "fucking moron", yelling it at the top of his lungs, as A. Zverev has done?

by Anonymousreply 541July 20, 2018 6:24 PM

Rublev had some raquet smashing moments in his match. Most young players had very poor behaviour on court (and i'm talking about juniors and u14 too), in the boys case they use to have a very aggressive body language, temper tantrums and raquet smashing, even when most of them seem friendly once the match is over. With the girls is even worse

Hingis got married again (see pic below)

from her wiki, here's a (partial) relationship history list:

In 2000, Hingis dated Swedish tennis player Magnus Norman[125] and Spanish golfer Sergio García. She was briefly engaged to Czech tennis player Radek Štěpánek, but split up with him in August 2007.[126] She dated former tennis players Ivo Heuberger and Julian Alonso.[127]

On 10 December 2010, in Paris, Hingis married then-24-year-old Thibault Hutin, a French equestrian show jumper she had met at a competition the previous April.[128] On 8 July 2013, Hingis told the Swiss newspaper Schweizer Illustrierte the pair had been separated since the beginning of the year.[129] In 2017 it was reported that she was dating Spaniard David Tosas Ros, a sports manager.[130]

The US hard court season kicks off tomorrow in Atlanta with two of the biggest douches on tour seeded #1 (Isner) and #2 (Kyrgios). Isner's fellow douchebro Ryan Harrison is seeded #8. The brat factor is offset by Tiafoe seeded at #5, the older Zverev, and Next Gen's Chung, Fritz, Rubin, de Minaur, and Huracz. Vets Karlovic, Chardy, Baghdatis, Youzhny and Young round out the draw along with Kyrgios' wing guy Kokkinakis.

Most interesting potential match (still more clay) on the other side of the pond in Gstaad is between the two hottest Next Gen players, Coric and Auger-Aliassime, who could meet in the quarters.

by Anonymousreply 578July 22, 2018 11:54 PM

Today's winners:

Bastad: (3) Fognini def. (4) Gasquet 6-3 3-6 6-1 for his 7th title and 2nd of the year

Umag: (3) Cecchinato def. Pella for his 2nd title of the year and career

Newport: (3) Johnson def. Ramanathan 7-5 3-6 6-2 for his 4th title and 2nd of the year

Bucharest: (1) Sevastova def. (4) Martic 7-6(4) 6-2 for her 3rd title and 1st of the year

Gstaad: (1) Cornet def. Minella 6-4 7-6(6) for her 6th title and 1st of the year
