Gap In-Store Playlists - The Quest Continues

After losing my copies of all of the monthly Gap In-Store Playlists from 1992 to 2006, I thought it was hopeless to even dream about reacquiring them. It took awhile, but I created my blog in 2015 and then posted a link on here at the DL on 12/31/2015. It took over a year for someone to contact me, but when he did, it was because of the thread at the DL. This guy has shared over 50 Gap, GapBody, GapKids and babyGap playlists with me. Later another guy saw the thread on the DL, and he shared with me another 25 playlists.

So, as you can see, the DataLounge has helped me immensely in getting closer to my goal of reacquiring all of the Gap In-Store Playlists from when I worked there from 1992 to 2006. Gay men are the sort who would save the monthly playlists form when they worked at Gap.

Therefore, I'm asking again: if you worked at Gap from 1992 to 2006 and saved your store's copies of the paper playlists that came with each month's CD/tape, please share them with me. If you know someone who saved the playlists, please show them this thread.

Read the first page of the blog if you have any questions about my quest. My email address is on every page of the blog.

Thanks to those who have helped, and looking forward to receiving more Gap In-Store Playlists to share with everyone!

The 2004 and 2005 Gap In-Store Playlists had quite a bit of the Indie Rock bands that were breaking back then, lots of English, Scottish and Irish bands... I especially love the June 2005 Gap In-Store Playlist, which I received last October.

I was happy to see that George Michael's "Outside" was on the list in 1999, not sure what month. So after the month was over the previous songs weren't played at the Gap again? It would be great to have all the music as formatted, not even the lists.

by Anonymousreply 11June 8, 2018 1:33 AM

Some songs return, especially in the Summer or in February for Valentine's Day... and Christmas. "Summertime" by The Sundays was a perennial Summer playlist entry.

I buy/download all of the music on all of the playlists and make playlists on the iTunes of my iMac. I never run out of music to listen to. Throw a few playlists on the iPod and then go work out!

"Outside" is on the January 1999 Gap In-Store Playlist.

Did Gap play music in the 80’s?

by Anonymousreply 28June 16, 2018 6:13 AM

Gap might have an archivist who can provide playlists.

by Anonymousreply 29June 16, 2018 8:52 AM

R29, There are NO archives at Gap - surprise! That's why Gap and I have a good relationship in getting more of the playlists found. They are definitely interested in this aspect of their history and have been very helpful and encouraging.

But they do not have archives of the playlists. That is all up to me.

That's why I have to cast the net in order to hopefully find more people who worked at Gap and saved the monthly playlists like I did.

R28 Yes, Gap had music playing in-stores in the 1980s and AEI Music provided the CDs. AEI provided the music for Gap until April 1999 when Muzak took over. AEI and Muzak were both bought by Mood Media (based in Austin) which is where the records of Gap playlists reside. Hopefully, they will make their way to me from Mood Media (there's a lot involved here so I'm just continuing to look for others with playlists while waiting on Mood Media to possibly come through).

Can someone explain these threads to me?

by Anonymousreply 42June 24, 2018 3:18 PM

"One of the greatest benefits of being employed by Gap from 1992 to 2006 was the excellent and varied selection of music played in stores. Each month, Gap locations would receive the current 4-hour tape or CD to play throughout the month. Music often went along with the seasons and clothing collections.

During my time with Gap, I collected the monthly in-store playlists that would come with each tape or CD, so that I could know the artists and songs playing. These were paper inserts that arrived with the tapes/CDs and contained the names of the artists, the song titles, and even the specific mixes. I really enjoyed trying to recreate the Gap in-store playlists for each month from those years. When I still had the paper playlists for almost every month, I slowly took my time buying songs and CDs here and there, gradually making playlists on my computer.

However, in a move in 2006, I lost the box which contained the dozens of Gap in-store playlists, which was very disappointing. In 2010, I luckily found copies of almost twenty duplicates that I had saved, so I was able to restart from there, and those actual playlists can be seen in several months on here from 1999 to 2005.

Because of this site, in February 2017, I was fortunate to meet another former Gap Employee who has shared almost three dozen playlists from 1993 to 2000 so far, which has been incredibly helpful. In October 2017, a different former Gap Employee shared with me two dozen playlists from 2000 to 2003 for Gap, GapBody, GapKids and babyGap. However, dozens more playlists are still needed.

My main goal with this site is to be able to hopefully reach out to others who have also saved the Gap In-Store Playlists from June 1992 to February 2006 and that they will share them with me. While I have partially reconstructed many months' playlists from memory, I would love to have copies/scans of the actual full In-Store Playlists for each month.

The larger goal with this site is to celebrate the phenomenon that was the Gap from those years, throughout the clothing, commercials, music, and overall cultural impact."

Any help would be greatly appreciated! If you have any Gap In-Store Playlists from 1992 to 2006, please contact me:

Thank you so much for organizing and sharing these playlists! In junior high The Gap was my introduction to adult personal style. At the time Saturday Night Live had a recurring skit "The Gap Girls" with Chris Farley as the manager, and David Spade + Adam Sander as the retail associates. At that time the mall near my house had two separate Gap stores, on the ground floor and the second floor. Later one of this stores was converted to a Gap Kids, and the other was converted to a Limited Too, and a larger Gap was opened in a different section of the ground floor of the mall. Later, I worked there in my sophomore year of college (Summer thru Holiday '98). Seeing these playlists takes me back to a much more innocent time in my life. I used your playlists as the inspiration for one master 'Gap In Store Playlist' mix on iTunes. Sometimes I play it in my office on the speakers, and people get into it. No one guesses that its made up of music played at The Gap. Please keep up your hard work!

by Anonymousreply 116September 22, 2018 2:45 AM

Thanks for sharing that! I have heard from hundreds of other former Gap employees who have found the site and rediscovered many of their old Gap favorites.

1998 was a very special year. My source still has several Gap playlists from 1998 and I'm happy to wait for him. August 1998 I'm sure you'll remember as CONSTANT EVOLUTION! I have 30 of the songs figured out but there are about 20 more, and my source DOES have this playlist, so hold on, it will be worth the wait. (My reconstructed-from-memory partial playlist is on the blog).

September 1998 through December 1998 is a perfect run of playlists, with the song choices amazingly capturing the era.

R117 I printed the in-store playlists and when I have some free time I look the songs up. I love any posts regarding music and videos of performers. I know some people have given you crap over your project but I have totally enjoyed the playlists. Thanks much!

by Anonymousreply 118September 22, 2018 2:29 PM

I have been so fortunate that two men have seen these threads and shared their copies of Gap playlists with me. The blog was sitting there for almost two years with my 15 or so saved Gap & GapKids playlists, as well as my reconstructed-from-memory playlists, but it wasn't until the beginning of 2017 that someone finally contacted me with his copies of the playlists. And then in October 2017, another guy from here shared with me about 25 more.

So, DataLounge has been the conduit for finding more Gap playlists from 1992 to 2006. The mockers and deriders can't begin to dim that for me. This has been a fantastic journey!

My favorite song by Stereolab, "Spark Plug", is one of the many great songs on the July 1996 Gap In-Store Playlist!

GPG- What will you do when your archive of playlists is complete?

by Anonymousreply 253January 11, 2019 2:14 PM

Well, R253, I would like to make a proper website celebrating the history of Gap. On the blog, I can't really change things up too much (aside from adding in newly-received playlists) because there are links to the blog posted on The New Yorker and numerous other sites. So, doing anything that would delete those links would potentially eliminate the chances of someone with playlists from seeing the blog.

I'd have to start a new site.

But there are still dozens of playlists that I'm still missing. I used to have them all but lost almost all of them in February 2006. It's pretty amazing to have recovered so many so far.

I wish I knew of a way to find more people who worked at Gap and saved the paper playlists.

Gap and Mood Media have done all they can to help me. Those avenues are completely dry (and they helped a lot!).

I've joined several music sites and streaming sites, trying to get the word out, but no response.

My ONLY response as far as getting the attention of guys who also saved Gap playlists has been here on the Datalounge. I've had dozens and dozens of former Gap employees write me and thank me for posting the playlists for them to enjoy again, but only two men in the last three years have had actual playlists to share with me.

I greatly doubt that those two are the only two former Gap employees out there who saved playlists besides me, so I need to find a way to cast the net wider.

Any ideas of other sites to try would be very welcome!

Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Above Top Secret (obsessive lunatics there), and many, many music sites.

I thought of a new thread to start to attract attention but I don't want to get Muriel mad.

I was just listening to the March 2005 Gap In-Store Playlist. It really is a great slice of Early 2005 music!

I find this fascinating, I mentioned that another thread one time. I feel like you have a Gap playlist for every topic on Datalounge! I love it, you’re really cheerful.

But I’m not any help I don’t think.

Thank you, R260!

If you ever need a soundtrack for a Salsa Fiesta, assemble the songs from the April 2000 GAP In-Store Playlist! It will take you RIGHT BACK to that Latin/Salsa Craze of Early 2000.

One of the joys about driving 2 hours from Connecticut to Boston, in the old days, was going to Tower Records, and flipping through the “singles” section. There were mostly classics on 45s there, but I taped many of them on a cassette. I still have it, on a CD now.

by Anonymousreply 264January 15, 2019 12:56 AM

I still have similar tapes R264.
