I watch the Golden Girls nightly

I find the theme soothing. The more I watch, the more I appreciate the brilliance of White, McLanahan and Arthur...and think Getty was out of her league.

by Anonymousreply 130December 5, 2019 4:58 AM

A Golden Girls thread? How refreshing!

by Anonymousreply 1June 1, 2018 2:11 AM

Barbara Thorndyke was fabulous, too!

by Anonymousreply 2June 1, 2018 2:12 AM

This is the lamest Golden Girls thread in DL history.

by Anonymousreply 3June 1, 2018 2:20 AM

Heretic.

by Anonymousreply 4June 1, 2018 2:22 AM

Babs Thorndyke was a dummy

by Anonymousreply 5June 1, 2018 2:26 AM

And of course Blanche knows what a metaphor is.

by Anonymousreply 6June 1, 2018 2:32 AM

Herb Edelman made that show.

by Anonymousreply 7June 1, 2018 2:35 AM

Yes, I find that shit very soothing too. Watch it nightly on Hallmark Channel.

by Anonymousreply 8June 1, 2018 2:37 AM

R7 = Louise Sorel

by Anonymousreply 9June 1, 2018 2:39 AM

Edelman? He's Jewish, isn't he?

by Anonymousreply 10June 1, 2018 2:49 AM

Barbara, you can tell by powder blue tuxedo.

by Anonymousreply 11June 1, 2018 2:53 AM

R9: I preferred to call her my Vivvy Wivvy.

by Anonymousreply 12June 1, 2018 2:54 AM

R11: He can't come to the club. It's restricted.

by Anonymousreply 13June 1, 2018 2:58 AM

Riddle me this, Barbara - whose rules are they? Huh?

by Anonymousreply 14June 1, 2018 3:00 AM

Sophia got the most laughs.

by Anonymousreply 15June 1, 2018 3:05 AM

I go down to the women's bar and watch it with all my Lebanese friends.

It was impossible to like the character that Getty played. Is that her fault of the fault of the writers.

by Anonymousreply 20June 1, 2018 3:15 AM

Cable edits out some good lines. Hulu and DVD being back the full episodes.

by Anonymousreply 23June 1, 2018 4:12 PM

You’re the daughter of a whore, Barbara!

You promise me green card!

by Anonymousreply 24June 1, 2018 4:18 PM

I find it soothing too. After a stressful day in these times we're living in, a GG episode can take me right out of it and offer some laughs.

by Anonymousreply 25June 1, 2018 4:23 PM

OP , YOU GO GUUURL !!!

by Anonymousreply 26June 1, 2018 4:28 PM

R26: I beg your pardon?

by Anonymousreply 27June 1, 2018 5:11 PM

Oh yeah, OP, I know you. You're the one with nothing going on in your bedroom.

by Anonymousreply 28June 1, 2018 5:15 PM

OP, would you like a signed copy of my latest novel, "So Flaming the Homo in Sunny Orlando"?

by Anonymousreply 29June 1, 2018 5:18 PM

You're not Barbara Thorndyke, R29 and you never will be.

by Anonymousreply 30June 2, 2018 12:58 AM

So you say it's soothing? I'm going to give an episode or two a try then.

by Anonymousreply 31June 2, 2018 1:00 AM

R29: I've grown so much as a writer since then.

by Anonymousreply 32June 3, 2018 2:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 33June 3, 2018 2:59 AM

R33: Fake Barbara!

by Anonymousreply 34June 3, 2018 3:17 AM

Who was the actor who played Norman? If you to 1:04 in this clip of Bea's Emmy win, he's sitting next to Estelle.

Just how many bedrooms did blanches house have? Four? Five? I noticed only one bedroom off the living room. Did any share bathrooms?

by Anonymousreply 36June 3, 2018 3:37 AM

R7 I agree he was very underrated. It’s hard to play the loveable loser.

And I loved Rue’s Emmy speech.

by Anonymousreply 37June 3, 2018 5:19 AM

Are you my long lost twin, OP? I watch it nightly too; all seasons burned onto my laptop. I watch, then listen, until I fall asleep after two or three episodes. After S7E7, I start over again from S1E1 and go through the episodes nightly for several weeks. This has been going on for about five years at least.

I love those few seconds of opening music, the violins, and the image of the house. So "soothing," just as you say. Like a sleeping pill.

I remember the show from when I was a kid, but didn't understand or appreciate it then.

I agree about the talent of White, McClanahan and Arthur and that Getty was the weakest link. But that weak link was still pretty strong because they gave her such good quips and she delivered those well. She did less well when the Sophia character had a strong storyline.

Now that I have practically every show memorized I notice the costumes and props more closely. The yellow kitchen curtains, the Matisse print on the living room wall next to the kitchen door, the surreal backdrop behind the lanai.

by Anonymousreply 38June 3, 2018 6:12 AM

Why do you stop at S7E7, R38? I know the second half of the last season isn't great, but at that point, shouldn't you just continue to the end?

by Anonymousreply 39June 3, 2018 2:00 PM

^ Oops, Yes I do go to the end.

by Anonymousreply 40June 3, 2018 2:10 PM

I must go now. Norman is waiting for me in bed, as well as a dashing young Moroccan.

by Anonymousreply 41June 3, 2018 2:49 PM

I agree, OP, very soothing. I also find Getty to generally be the weak link, but considering that I've been watching the show on a pretty regular basis since its original run, I've gone through phases where I prefer one actress/character more than others. I went a long time with Mcclanahan was my favorite and I still think she is the strongest technical actress of the four, but lately Dorothy/Bea has gone back to being my favorite. I think Sophia has always been the one that I've liked the least, as her comedy is the easiest (jokiest) and her delivery and timing are not quite as sharp as the others, but lately I've found myself liking her character more and don't think she's as weak a link as I used to think she was.

by Anonymousreply 42June 3, 2018 3:20 PM

I watch GG nightly too. Betty White was always my favorite. As an adult I like Dorothy more now.

by Anonymousreply 43June 3, 2018 3:51 PM

Dorothy was the glee keeping it together. But every one of them was funny.

by Anonymousreply 44June 3, 2018 4:57 PM

At first, Bea playing Dorothy was my favorite as she was the obvious "glue" to the group and her deadpan humor and deep voice was very funny. I felt the Blanche character was too easy: everybody loves the sexpot. But the more I watched I realized how talented and funny Rue was playing that character. Her tone of voice and body movements are pitch perfect. I learned later that she rehearsed quite a lot to make that happen. And when I used to think the ninny Rose character was boring, I realized how much Betty White brought to that role: that blank cheerful stare and nonchalant delivery of surprising and absurd St. Olaf stories. She really was a versatile actress, considering the other TV character she's best known for is Sue Ann Nivens.

by Anonymousreply 45June 3, 2018 8:10 PM

Estelle Getty improved as the series went along. Just sayin'

by Anonymousreply 46June 3, 2018 8:21 PM

Estelle was really hit and miss. She wasn't as consistently on the mark as the other three. She wasn't terrible, though. For a TV sitcom she was good, but she was on the set with actresses who were great.

by Anonymousreply 48June 3, 2018 8:27 PM

I loved Estelle and thought all four actresses were brilliant. I cannot imagine anyone else playing Sophia.

by Anonymousreply 49June 3, 2018 8:45 PM

Rue always gasping for air between words annoyed the shit out of me.

by Anonymousreply 50June 3, 2018 8:49 PM

Rue was probably the best all around actress, but - and I’ve probably noticed this only on like the 10th viewing - but Betty was always totally in character even when she was barely in the frame or in an episode where she had maybe five/six lines (common in the later seasons)...

by Anonymousreply 51June 3, 2018 10:44 PM

Yes Estelle Getty was so weak that she had the highest Q rating in the history of television, including the incomparable Lucille Ball. There really are some bozos here.

by Anonymousreply 52June 3, 2018 11:32 PM

Norman Lear is still alive.

by Anonymousreply 53June 3, 2018 11:59 PM

Every once in a while I'll put on a disc and watch a few episodes.

Will there ever be another Dorothy Zbornak?

by Anonymousreply 59June 4, 2018 1:31 AM

Golden girls is and has always been my anti depressant. I usually keep it on 24-7 on the background. That music between the opening theme and the opening scene is my happiness

by Anonymousreply 60June 4, 2018 2:19 AM

I think Estelle got better as the series went on. Some her delivery in the last two seasons were hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 61June 4, 2018 2:27 AM

Actually I thought Estelle got worse as time went on. By season 6 or 7, she just seemed to be going through the motions. They all were to an extent, but she was the worst at covering that up.

by Anonymousreply 62June 4, 2018 2:43 AM

I agree r62. She was always the most hit or miss (and when she did hit I agree she was the best) , but the ratio of misses got worse after the first I’d say two and a half seasons. I think that had to do with the writers changing her character as much as anything into something way too cloying. That and the fact that too many story lines focused on her.

All that said I actually preferred Rose more in the later seasons when she was more of a supporting character - and more dimwitted slash sassy and less sappy. I think it suited Betty’s talents better.

by Anonymousreply 63June 4, 2018 2:49 AM

I want the Golden Girls in me, quite deeply.

by Anonymousreply 64June 4, 2018 2:51 AM

Rue said that Estelle constantly needed help with her line readings. She tended to emphasize the wrong wrong in a line of dialogue. None of it was as intuitive to her as it was to the other ladies. Estelle's need to be coached all the time apparently worked Bea's last nerve.

by Anonymousreply 65June 4, 2018 3:14 AM

R65, well Bea had dabbled in dramatics since an early age.

by Anonymousreply 66June 4, 2018 4:35 AM

Getty was my favorite. I think her lines were more difficult. She had to deliver one liners a lot and her character wasn't given as much nuance as the others. She couldn't rely on any range of tone or subtlety. I think she did a great job with it. I thought it worked with her being the oldest that she was pretty deadpan in her delivery and her personality was up for whatever might get her by. She had a way of giving understanding while elbowing her way through.

by Anonymousreply 67June 4, 2018 5:00 AM

The Mortimer Club had the most delicious Monday morning breakfast and I really needed it after my weekend escapades with Norman. He certainly has given me inspiration for my next novel on which I am currently working entitled "Young Man, Older Woman".

by Anonymousreply 68June 4, 2018 4:16 PM

Listen, Thorny, a little of that goes a very long way.

Hang it up, already!

OP, I used to do the same thing at night with "Roseanne"... until Barr fucked it up for me :( Now I play old Stern Sagas, Ellen, Alf, or indeed The Golden Girls.

It has to be dated shows and thus anxiety-free. The present world makes me so anxious I can barely watch anything current.

by Anonymousreply 98June 5, 2018 3:02 PM

I'm streaming a season one episode, (Break In)and I swear there's a scene that wasn't included in the TV broadcast, (or else it was edited out of the reruns). Do any of you diehards recall the scene with Rose running away from a man who she thought was going to assault her in a parking garage?

by Anonymousreply 99June 6, 2018 4:01 PM

Yes. It turned out to be the parking lot attendant or something innocuous like that.

It's the episode where Rose buys a gun and it WAS broadcast and it IS on the box set.

by Anonymousreply 100June 6, 2018 4:12 PM

I think we need to develop a recipe for Pancakes Barbara Thorndyke. Something they'd serve at the Mortimer Club, of course.

by Anonymousreply 101June 6, 2018 4:18 PM

I watch the Golden Girls in a nightie.

by Anonymousreply 102June 6, 2018 4:19 PM

Thanks, R100, I guess it was just cut from the reruns.

by Anonymousreply 103June 6, 2018 4:28 PM

In the original script the security guard grabbed Rose's big tits and she developed selective amnesia.

by Anonymousreply 104June 6, 2018 8:02 PM

I've seen that scene where Rose runs from the parking attendant in the reruns on Hallmark. I remember it because they cut away just as the guy is about to grab Rose, so it's a real cliffhanger!

by Anonymousreply 105June 7, 2018 7:30 AM

I fucking hate that episode.

Some of those early shows I really wanted to slap the shit out of Rose. And Dorothy wasn’t very likable initially either.

Sophia really was the best thing about many of those early episodes.

by Anonymousreply 106June 7, 2018 7:49 AM

Season One was a little tame compared to seasons 3 through 5.

Although Sophia had a good line after trigger-happy Rose shoots at what she thinks is an intruder (Blanche and her date):

(Paraphrasing) Sophia: "I live through a stroke, heart surgery, and two wars. One day I'll belch and Stable Mabel here will blow my head off."

by Anonymousreply 107June 7, 2018 9:57 AM

Which is episode is the clip from the opening credits where Blanche is in a red blazer and hides her hand in her sleeve? I've seen each episode like 8000 times and can't remember which one that is from.

by Anonymousreply 108June 7, 2018 12:27 PM

Someone on the writing staff must've been a soap fan. I think there were two shout outs to Another World, and a mention of Y&R and even Ryan's Hope.

[quote]Which is episode is the clip from the opening credits where Blanche is in a red blazer and hides her hand in her sleeve? I've seen each episode like 8000 times and can't remember which one that is from.

I've always wondered this too, I looked it up and this is the explanation on the Golden Girls wiki:

[quote][italic]A deleted scene from this episode was notably included in the series' opening credit sequence. The short scene shows Blanche pulling her arm into the sleeve of her red jacket as Dorothy and Rose gasp. No dialogue is heard during the credits, but it appears Blanche is telling a story of a dog biting someone's hand off (perhaps after the girls are talking about the dog in the kitchen for protection.)[/italic]

While I couldn't find a clip of that scene I did find a cut scene from season 5's [italic]"Like the Beep Beep Beep of the Tom-Tom"[/italic], the only reason I mention this scene is because I noticed the YouTube channel belongs to a Datalounger.
