Yanny or Laurel?

Which do you hear?

by Anonymousreply 124August 20, 2018 8:10 AM

Weird. I heard Yanny the first time, but Laurel all the times after that. I just re-listened and I can't hear Yanny at all now.

by Anonymousreply 1May 15, 2018 10:43 PM

Yanny? Yann? No.

Now excuse me i must pick up a roasted chicken.

by Anonymousreply 2May 15, 2018 10:46 PM

I wish I could hear the yanny but I only hear Laurel.

by Anonymousreply 3May 15, 2018 10:54 PM

At first I only heard Laurel but now I can hear the "ny" of yanny. I can't make the Lau sound like Yan.

by Anonymousreply 4May 15, 2018 10:56 PM

I see no recording to listen to -- where is it on the website?

by Anonymousreply 5May 15, 2018 10:57 PM

You have to click on the link at OP

by Anonymousreply 6May 15, 2018 11:03 PM

I'm hearing-impaired. Can someone provide a link for me?

by Anonymousreply 7May 15, 2018 11:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 9May 15, 2018 11:08 PM

I can't imagine how someone could possibly hear "Laurel" as there's not a single L in there. At least with The Dress, I could understand why some were (erroneously) seeing white and gold.

by Anonymousreply 10May 15, 2018 11:11 PM

I only heard Yanny at first but the last time I could hear Laurel a little. It's very low tones so it would really depend on stereo settings and the person's hearing.

by Anonymousreply 11May 15, 2018 11:16 PM

I tried tinkering with the different presets in my computer's sound enhancer programme and no... still just Yanny. Must be cognitive.

by Anonymousreply 12May 15, 2018 11:20 PM

It has something to do with pitch-shifting. I found a thread on Twitter where different settings produced each. Unfortunately, I can't link to it here.

by Anonymousreply 13May 15, 2018 11:32 PM

Definitely not hearing Laurel. I can here the Y sound at the beginning and the end but I'm not hearing the N sound in the middle. To me, the sound in the middle is more like the double L sound in Spanish words like pollo or rellenos.

So basically I'm hearing yoy-yoy.

I hear Laurel plain as day.

by Anonymousreply 17May 15, 2018 11:44 PM

The article at r16 explains that it's neither and both. One of those "is it a vase or two faces" illusions. Only auditory this time.

by Anonymousreply 18May 15, 2018 11:45 PM

With the pitch lowered 20% it does sound like yanny. Still at the regular pitch I don't see how you hear yanny. Y'all must have dog hearing

by Anonymousreply 19May 15, 2018 11:46 PM

From the article at r16:

[quote]Older adults tend to start losing their hearing at the higher frequency ranges, which could explain why Riecke could only hear Laurel, but his eight-year-old daughter could hear Yanny. It’s a phenomenon you can mimic on a computer, he says: if you remove all the low frequencies, you hear Yanny. If you remove the high frequencies, you hear Laurel.

In short, if you hear Laurel, you're OLD.

by Anonymousreply 20May 15, 2018 11:47 PM

I’m 47 and all I heard at first was Yanny. That’s what my kids and husband hear.

But once I listened to r22’s video, all I hear is Laurel. Went back to the original and did not mess with my audio settings at all.

Fucking freaky.

by Anonymousreply 23May 16, 2018 12:02 AM

r23 Eugh, I feel so frustrated that I'm unable to hear Laurel in the original even after listening to r22's video.

by Anonymousreply 24May 16, 2018 12:08 AM

All I hear is Laurel

by Anonymousreply 25May 16, 2018 12:39 AM

I heard Yanny first, now I only hear Laurel.

by Anonymousreply 26May 16, 2018 12:49 AM

When I first hear this a couple of hours ago on another site (Slate.com) all I could hear was Yanny, loud and clear. But clicking on R16's link, all I hear is Laurel, just as clear. I think they go to the same website, and I didn't change any settings on my laptop audio, so I don't know what changed (my sense of hearing?). The first version I heard was more high-pitched, the one at R16 lower-pitched, more like a grown man's voice.

The only time I could hear "Laurel" is on the BuzzFeed site where someone separated out the two voices. Even knowing "Laurel" is in there I can't hear it.

by Anonymousreply 30May 16, 2018 6:17 AM

Yesterday I could only hear Laurel. This morning the first thing I could hear was only yanny. Took me a sec to hear Laurel. So relieved that I can hear both. Like having one of those itches "inside" one's leg that you can't scratch but finally you find the place on your leg that you scratch to get the itch.

by Anonymousreply 31May 16, 2018 12:15 PM

Yeanny.

by Anonymousreply 32May 16, 2018 12:32 PM

To the current 12.2% who heard nothing, do you know why you heard nothing? I had to listen to it from Chrome. It would not play in Firefox.

by Anonymousreply 33May 16, 2018 12:35 PM

I just can't hear a trace of "yanny." It's a solid "laurel" for me.

by Anonymousreply 34May 16, 2018 1:23 PM

Good God! Do people not have anything better to do?

by Anonymousreply 35May 16, 2018 1:38 PM

Both are there. When I first heard it Yanny was quite evident. But try concentrating on staring at the words and tuning in to the sounds. Laurel will come out (lower tones mostly it seems). Yanny will fade into the background. Then you will hear a pronounced "Laurel" but a echo of "Yanny" (higher pitched). I was not so successful to tune back to the reverse.

This may require above average sense perception, or more trained listening skills. I bet classically/academically trained musicians should be able to hear both.

by Anonymousreply 36May 16, 2018 1:46 PM

I heard laurel, then yanny, but it's back to laurel and I can't hear yanny anymore.

by Anonymousreply 37May 16, 2018 2:49 PM

Laurel

by Anonymousreply 38May 16, 2018 2:57 PM

So maybe the Laurel people are from one timeline and the Yanny people are from a different timeline.

by Anonymousreply 39May 16, 2018 3:03 PM

Oh, it's one of those cute troll memes that either have multiple versions of the same file floating around (hence the contradictory answers), or trolls insisting that they see or hear the file saying or displaying the opposite of what it's saying or showing.

So I'll play along. "That clip clearly says 'Yanny'!!! I don't know where people are hearing 'Laurel'! They must be crazy!!! Can't you hear it? Geeeeeezzzz...."

Did I do it right?

by Anonymousreply 40May 16, 2018 3:29 PM

I think this is some Quantum reality test. Some kind of Mandela Effect. Maybe we are all living in a kind of fluid reality where some shift to laurel and some shift to Yanny. (or maybe its just a computerized voice saying both at different tones....)

by Anonymousreply 41May 16, 2018 3:59 PM

Try this tool on the NY Times site. When I first heard the clip on the news this morning I could ONLY year Yanni. I could not imagine how anyone could hear Laurel. I played around with the slider on the NY Times site where you can amplify the Yanni or Laurel sound. Then I could only hear Laurel even when I put the slider back in the middle (the original setting). I thought they were messing with me. I went back to other sites where I could only hear Yanni, and now I can clearly hear Laurel but can force myself to hear Yanni if I focus on it. It's like once you hear Laurel you can't go back. VERY WEIRD.

by Anonymousreply 58May 17, 2018 9:48 AM

Where did this originate? Are there any links that aren't just Twitter posts? How the hell do I know if I'm listening to the original audio and not some doctored reTweet? Christ I hate Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 59May 17, 2018 10:45 AM

First several times I heard reports about this on the news, I heard Yanny.

Later that day, when it was repeated on the news yet again, I heard Laurel.

by Anonymousreply 60May 17, 2018 10:46 AM

I don't know who the FUCK is hearing Yanny but it's clearly Laurel and no Yanny at all. I played for others and they were saying Yanny and I was like what the hell is wrong with you.

by Anonymousreply 61May 17, 2018 1:54 PM

You can't doctor a retweet, r59.

The lady who tweeted it got it off Reddit, and it was apparently originally created by some high schoolers. The "laurel" is from a dictionary pronunciation site, the "yanny" from a computer voice site. They just edited them together.

On the other this morning, I clearly heard "Yanni."

by Anonymousreply 64May 17, 2018 1:59 PM

r59, one sight has the explanation. Girl was doing her homework using vocabulary.com and the word was LAUREL and she plaid the pronunciation of the world and it came out Yanny, she posted her confusion on social media, like we do today, and it went viral.

[quote] The audio clip originated from a 2007 recording of the word "Laurel" from Vocabulary.com.[2][3] The spread of the audio clip as an illusion most likely originated from a student of Flowery Branch High School when she posted the illusion on Instagram on May 11, 2018

by Anonymousreply 87May 18, 2018 6:35 AM

Proven to be not true R73. It is more dependent upon the speakers or headphones one is listening to really.

by Anonymousreply 88May 18, 2018 9:31 AM

Here, the NYT has a tool on this article page so you can adjust the frequencies until you hear one or the other. Not only that, but you can "vote on" when you hear the word change!

My "Yanny/Laurel critical point" is two ticks left of center.

by Anonymousreply 91May 18, 2018 10:20 AM

R89, it changes for me. The longer I listen to the full Yanni on the right, the sooner it becomes Laurel on the left.

by Anonymousreply 92May 18, 2018 10:55 AM

Heard it on the news yesterday and heard Yanny, now I hear only Laurel.

by Anonymousreply 93May 18, 2018 12:18 PM

There's an objectively correct answer: Laurel.

If you're not hearing "Laurel" then either your hearing is fucked, up, your brain is fucked up, or the speakers/headphones/earbuds you're using are fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 94May 18, 2018 12:25 PM

R82 heard both

by Anonymousreply 96May 18, 2018 2:59 PM

I hear “Yarry.” Am I dying?

by Anonymousreply 97May 19, 2018 12:53 AM

If you only hear Yanny, try looking at the word 'Laurel' as you listen, it may trigger you to hear Laurel.

I was Yanny first then tried this, and now I can hear both, if I focus in on one over the other.

by Anonymousreply 98May 19, 2018 12:59 AM

All I can hear is something about something stinking.

by Anonymousreply 99May 19, 2018 1:05 AM

I had a hearing test many years ago (pre-internet) and was told that I do not hear high frequencies/high-pitched sounds, which by the way, the ones I can hear annoy me like nails on a chalkboard. I had no idea I couldn't hear high frequencies / pitches until I was told that by the doctor. FWIW, I heard Laurel.

by Anonymousreply 100May 19, 2018 1:05 AM

r100 - similar to you, I do not hear the highest pitches in one ear. The other ear is normal. I heard Laurel. In the NY Times thing, I had to move it all the way to the right to hear Yanny.

But what's weird is then when I slid it back left, I COULD hear "Yanny" almost half of the way up. The sound is low quality so the brain is filling the details in different ways.

by Anonymousreply 101May 19, 2018 1:10 AM

This is more of a brain filter issue for me. I could not hear Yanny at first. Once I "primed" my brain to hear Yanny using the adjustable sound through the NYT link, I was able to hear Yanny and Laurel at the same time on the default setting and original audio clip..

Once possibility pulled out of my ass is that I spent many years around high frequency noises coming from computers (fans, electronics, etc.), so my brain may have learned to just automatically tune those noises out. Once my brain was more clearly given a signal (Yanny) that was relevant and not noise I was able to distinguish the higher frequency sounds for a while.

This effect has a shelf life though. After a few minutes of not listening, I have to re-prime my brain using the adjustable sound to re-hear Yanny and then I can hear both at the same time on the original setting. The brain is a weird thing.

For some trying to hear both at the same time, use the link with the slider. Move it until you hear the Laurel or Yanny you are not hearing and then slow move it toward the center in small steps, taking a few seconds at each step to hear both sounds. This might let you hear both sounds at the same time on the middle setting.

by Anonymousreply 102May 19, 2018 1:23 AM

Um R89, I posted that on Wednesday and we discussed it already. Please try to keep up. You're only 2 days behind schedule. Thanks hun.

Paul is dead! Paul is dead!

by Anonymousreply 113May 21, 2018 4:47 AM

Heard both from the get go..

And that's with a twenty decibel loss in my left ear in the speech perception range. Maybe that's why I'm hearing both sounds equally.

I made masking noises to block one sound or the other. A hissing sound masked 'yanny', and humming at about the same frequency as the narrator's voice muted 'laurel'.

Turn me on, R113 Hehe.
