Cats are like kids, they are fine as long as they are someone else's. That said, I would rather have a cat than a kid any day of the week. They are nice, amusing animals at their best, but don't care for the shedding at all and it's a never ending battle to keep fleas off them. Plus there are the vet bills for shots and illnesses--I hate cleaning up cat puke.

I had been hearing a kitten crying for about a week at my apt complex, but every time I went down to look he was nowhere to be found. (I live on the 3rd floor.) Finally, this past Sunday I heard it again, and when I went down to look I see this tiny, filthy, starving and dehydrated gray and white tabby standing on top of the air conditioner crying. I reached out my hand to him and he jumped into it and laid against my chest purring. I gave him a bath in Dawn (it was caked on, dried diarrhea covering half of his tiny body) and fed him wet food and kitten chow and lots of water. I have never seen a cat drink so much water in my entire life. He basically ate and drank and slept for 24 hours. When I got home from work yesterday it was like he had been transformed! Visibly not as bony, shiny coat and full of energy! The poor little guy had been on the verge of death here in hot-ass Houston. I named him Tony and he is the sweetest, most affectionate boy. I wish I know how to post a pic of him. He loves to climb up and smash his face against mine forcefully, like he knows I saved him and wants to say "thanks".

I let Tony come out on our balcony with me (3 stories up) and he made me so nervous climbing up on the railing I had to put him back inside. Then I did some research. It's a thing. Very disturbing. Also, in my case Tony is only about 6-ish weeks old and is still very near sighted. He can't see just how far down it is and I'm afraid he will try to jump or slip. Tony's Human, please, please keep him away from the balcony. Especially at this young age. As you get to know him better and his tendencies (wild child, jumper, etc), you can decide if he should be out in the balcony. And if you do, he should be supervised and never alone. Couple adopted a pair of cats from us. One liked to hang out in the balcony and the other was too scared. They felt the former was fine out there and didn't cause much concern. That is until he up and jumped one day. Shattered his jaw and didn't survive the fall.

I was babysitting a friend's cat who had quite a personality. I was at the computer eavesdropping on another friend's Facebook messages while he was running around.
