What’s your pick ?
None of the above. And most of the groups in your pic aren't English.
Oh, it's the Kinks.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 23, 2018 1:08 AM |
Joy Division & Pulp are among mine.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 23, 2018 1:09 AM |
The Kinks
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 23, 2018 1:11 AM |
The Clash for 2nd place
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 23, 2018 1:12 AM |
The Beatles, brainiac.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 23, 2018 1:13 AM |
One Direction is english, right?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 23, 2018 1:13 AM |
Yes, but they're not rock, dumbass.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 23, 2018 1:15 AM |
Yes they are rock.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 23, 2018 1:16 AM |
And you are stupid as well as taste-impaired.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 23, 2018 1:20 AM |
I vote for One Direction, then.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 23, 2018 1:20 AM |
Does one direction even play their own instruments?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 23, 2018 1:21 AM |
I think you missed a band.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 23, 2018 1:25 AM |
Isn't One Drecktion a Simon Cowell confection?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 23, 2018 1:27 AM |
R12 I tend to avoid ancient 60s band. And Beatles are more pop than rock.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 23, 2018 1:28 AM |
Yes, screw ancient 60s bands.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 23, 2018 1:30 AM |
R13 Good one mate! Though I appreciate The Beatles I agree with OP R12. After The Kinks, The Clash, The Who, Pink Floyd, I'd place The Beatles... But only because you brought them up!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 23, 2018 1:31 AM |
Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, too, R15.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 23, 2018 1:31 AM |
OP types "singles troll."
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 23, 2018 1:31 AM |
R15 Say you don't mean it! Take it back and we'll give you a pass. If not, toss off!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 23, 2018 1:32 AM |
r19 Read the whole thread and spare yourself further embarrassment.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 23, 2018 1:34 AM |
Of the poll options, probably the Rolling Stones. I really like The Kinks and I'm glad to see several people have mentioned them.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 23, 2018 1:36 AM |
Led Zeppelin > Rolling Stones > Pink Floyd >>>>>> Queen
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 23, 2018 1:36 AM |
Led Zeppelin > Rolling Stones > Pink Floyd > The Who >>>>> Queen
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 23, 2018 1:37 AM |
I wish I liked The Who Sell Out more.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 23, 2018 1:37 AM |
R14/OP. You avoid ancient 60s bands, yet your poll includes The Rolling Stones and The Who?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 23, 2018 1:38 AM |
R20 You make no sense.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 23, 2018 1:44 AM |
Suit yourself, R26.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 23, 2018 1:45 AM |
My comment to you R27 was meant that your reply @ R20 was a non-sequitur to my post @ R19... Not arguing with you, just doesn't logically follow. Perhaps you could explain what you meant to convey? Are you R15?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 23, 2018 1:50 AM |
R28, r15 was a sarcastic way of stating the obvious, that two of the bands are "ancient '60s bands," which OP had just said he hated in r14. In other words, R15 didn't really mean it. So "Say you don't mean it!" means you didn't get it. And I am NOT explaining that again.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 23, 2018 1:57 AM |
Anyway, OP left out Black Sabbath.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 23, 2018 1:58 AM |
With good reason, r30.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 23, 2018 1:59 AM |
Most if not all of Beatles output were in the 60s. Not so the other bands listed. That’s what I meant by 60s band.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 23, 2018 2:00 AM |
OP, you're an idiot. Go home. Get some rest.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 23, 2018 2:01 AM |
R29 I was being sarcastic in MY post @ R19, funny that. Lighten up, we're both Kinks fans apparently. I'm curious here what is the cut-off for "Ancient"?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 23, 2018 2:02 AM |
The Beatles. case closed
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 23, 2018 2:05 AM |
R34 Beatles year active 1960-1970, hence 60s band. What’s so difficult to understand ?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 23, 2018 2:06 AM |
You should have typed "Greatest '70s or later English rock band" then, dumbass.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 23, 2018 2:08 AM |
The Smiths, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 23, 2018 2:08 AM |
OP, et al: Why everyone so testy here? Was hoping this would be as enjoyable as the metal thread, but apparently I've stumbled upon a bloody pissing contest.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 23, 2018 2:08 AM |
R37 Cos some bands were active in the 60s and well beyond the 60s, who is dumb now ?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 23, 2018 2:12 AM |
It's because the idiot OP left out the Beatles because they're an "ancient '60s band," and expected us to intuit somehow that that disqualified them for consideration. Save your bloody piss, R39.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 23, 2018 2:13 AM |
No one is dumber than you, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 23, 2018 2:13 AM |
Um, still you, R40/OP.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 23, 2018 2:13 AM |
Then you should have included the Beatles if you were being as inclusive as you say you are in r40. Dumb, dumb, dumb OP. Dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 23, 2018 2:14 AM |
Copious quantities of contentious cuntiness here!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 23, 2018 2:16 AM |
Op also left out Judas Priest and Def Leopard.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 23, 2018 2:17 AM |
R44 Start your own thread or are you too dumb for that ?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 23, 2018 2:17 AM |
You're the dumbest cunt here, OP, and possibly the dumbest cunt anywhere.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 23, 2018 2:19 AM |
OP, you don't get to call someone else dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 23, 2018 2:19 AM |
Crikey, Competitive contemptuousness as well!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 23, 2018 2:21 AM |
Beatles would be out of place among this group. End of discussion
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 23, 2018 2:22 AM |
Why, R52?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 23, 2018 2:23 AM |
Pink Floyd x 1000
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 23, 2018 2:23 AM |
R53 Beatles...can you say pop ? 60s pop. Hardly rock.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 23, 2018 2:24 AM |
Sounds as if some of us need to smoke a bit of grass and mellow the fuck out!
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 23, 2018 2:24 AM |
Everyone calm down. The correct answer is Roxy Music.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 23, 2018 2:25 AM |
Fleetwood Mac feels sorely missed out on too.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 23, 2018 2:27 AM |
Genesis says hi!
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 23, 2018 2:29 AM |
Um, no. They weren't "pop" as you put it, not for the time. In their earlier years, perhaps, but they crossed musical genres. 60s pop was stuff like Hermans Hermits, The Monkees, and other bubblegum pop bands. Without the Beatles innovation, rock music wouldn't have evolved the way it did.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 23, 2018 2:29 AM |
R58 Fleetwood Mac is not strictly English
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 23, 2018 2:29 AM |
Where the hell are The Bee Gees?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 23, 2018 2:31 AM |
The Bee Gees were Australian, weren't they? R62
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 23, 2018 2:32 AM |
The Jam...duh!
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 23, 2018 2:32 AM |
Australian, English, same difference.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 23, 2018 2:33 AM |
Ok if you're all suggesting other bands, I say The Clash.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 23, 2018 2:34 AM |
I mentioned them earlier R66.... Love them forever
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 23, 2018 2:40 AM |
None better than the Yardbirds, if it's English rock you're after. Ray Davies, The Beatles, pop perfection. Creem, Derek and The Dominos, also top shelf.
None better than the Yardbirds.
Also The Babies.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 23, 2018 2:43 AM |
R68 they look too clean cut for rock
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 23, 2018 2:44 AM |
The Yardbirds wer great but they were a 60s band.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | April 23, 2018 2:45 AM |
All the needless niggling about sixties bands is ridiculous.... Out of OP's list, all except Queen were formed in the sixties, therefore sixties bands. It's like a middle-school spat this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 23, 2018 2:50 AM |
I agree R71 I was merely pointing it out. Besides The Yardbirds were born and died within that decade so the OP would be particularly adamant to keep them out I suppose.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | April 23, 2018 2:53 AM |
Then OP ought to better title threads.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | April 23, 2018 2:56 AM |
OP, I would love to shove a gun up your ass and fire.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 23, 2018 3:00 AM |
R71 But they were still relevant beyond the 60s, not the Beatles
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 23, 2018 3:00 AM |
If it's to be a 70s band, let's go with John Peel: The Undertones.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 23, 2018 3:14 AM |
R72 Love The Yardbirds too!
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 23, 2018 3:18 AM |
My favorite, if not the objectively greatest: Radiohead ca. OK Computer --> Kid A --> In Rainbows
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 23, 2018 4:42 AM |
The Beatles did play rock music. In fact they expanded it and enriched it.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | April 23, 2018 4:57 AM |
Where are the Beatles?
by Anonymous | reply 80 | April 23, 2018 4:59 AM |
We wouldn’t be talking about greatest English rock bands if it hadn’t been for the Beatles.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 23, 2018 5:01 AM |
God I love "A Day in the Life"
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 23, 2018 5:15 AM |
Pink Floyd by a country mile. The Rolling Stones suck
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 23, 2018 5:21 AM |
Pink Floyd isn't bad but the songs are too long.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | April 23, 2018 5:32 AM |
I dig the Verve too.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | April 23, 2018 5:32 AM |
Believe it or not OP, but a lot of Brits of a certain age would nominate Status Quo.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | April 23, 2018 6:36 AM |
New Order
by Anonymous | reply 87 | April 23, 2018 6:38 AM |
Agree with The Kinks. Also happy to see Roxy Music, Joy Division and The Buzzcocks mentioned.
I'll add another one: the forever-underrated XTC.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | April 23, 2018 8:18 AM |
I like the police. I just saw sting on Jimmy Fallon. Sting looks so good for 66!
by Anonymous | reply 89 | April 24, 2018 4:33 AM |
Nothing that any of these other bands ever did compares with the four-album run from BEGGARS BANQUET to EXILE ON MAIN STREET -- or the late-70s masterpiece SOME GIRLS.
The Stones should've hung it up a long time ago but in their prime they were something else.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | April 24, 2018 4:41 AM |
The best band ever from Liverpool, the Fab Four....
Echo and the Bunnymen
by Anonymous | reply 91 | April 24, 2018 4:42 AM |
Have The Beatles been mentioned?
by Anonymous | reply 92 | April 24, 2018 4:43 AM |
Bucks Fizz
by Anonymous | reply 93 | April 24, 2018 5:08 AM |
From this list, I went with Pink Floyd, although I love Led Zep more or less equally. But I acknowledge that they were plagiarists, and it does seem unfair to award them the title for that reason. Never could really get into the Who or the Stones, just not my cup of tea. Also on my list would be the Smiths, the Clash, and the Zombies (woefully underrated).
by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 24, 2018 5:23 AM |
yes, THE CLASH! the only band that matters!
by Anonymous | reply 95 | April 24, 2018 6:33 AM |
R90, I am one of those weirdos who preferred THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST to three out of those four albums (LET IT BLEED being the exception, of course).

^ My junior and senior year drinking song.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | April 24, 2018 7:57 AM |
Seriously OP? How did you miss the Beetles?
by Anonymous | reply 99 | April 24, 2018 11:01 AM |
R93, I love you dearly, but I think Black Lace has them beat.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | April 24, 2018 11:05 AM |
Bananarama. Any one of them could outsing Aretha Franklin and together their intricate, complicated harmonies elevated pop music to level like never before or since. Robert DeNiro's Waiting (Talking Italian) is possibly one of the finest pieces of music to come out of the 20th century.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | April 24, 2018 11:16 AM |
They played 1400 concerts, recorded over 200 songs, still hold sales records, had enormous influence in pop music and pop culture, and their songwriting catalog is worth billions. Is there really any other answer?
by Anonymous | reply 102 | April 24, 2018 1:48 PM |
But r102, they stopped recording in 1970, which disqualifies them according to OP (the dumbest poster on Datalounge who is not the Drew Dixon Douche).
by Anonymous | reply 103 | April 24, 2018 2:03 PM |
THE CLASH for first place.
OP's pic is full of American bands.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | April 26, 2018 4:13 PM |
The Beetles of course. I'm not saying they're my favorite, mind you, but it goes without saying they are the "greatest" in terms of fame and universal appeal.
Is OP the Beetles Hating Troll who passive aggressively posted this excluding the Beetles thinking that the poll would somehow make the Beetles not the greatest band? lol
by Anonymous | reply 106 | April 26, 2018 4:21 PM |
This is not a pop song. This is one of the greatest rock songs ever. And its greatness secures this rock band as one of the greatest rock bands ever. And certainly THE greatest English rock band, period.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | April 26, 2018 4:36 PM |
The Clash.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | April 26, 2018 4:39 PM |
60s - The Kinks
70s - Roxy Music
80s - New Order

I like the Beatles but reckon they are more pop than rock
by Anonymous | reply 112 | April 26, 2018 4:52 PM |
I also want to shoehorn Wire in here somewhere
by Anonymous | reply 113 | April 26, 2018 4:59 PM |
Nothing wrong with being "pop."
by Anonymous | reply 114 | April 26, 2018 6:04 PM |
R114 Nothing but this thread is about real rock bands
by Anonymous | reply 115 | April 26, 2018 9:48 PM |
[quote]I like the Beatles but reckon they are more pop than rock
Rock is exactly what the Beatles were doing when they started, and Rock evolved along with them, driven to some extent by what they were doing. The fact that it continued to evolve after the broke up doesn't mean that they're not a rock band.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | April 26, 2018 9:51 PM |
The Beatles are a "real rock band," r115. The first one I ever listened to, in fact.
Go give yourself a swirlie.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | April 26, 2018 9:56 PM |
1/3 of a WW for r111.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | April 26, 2018 10:06 PM |
Even the pic OP provided shows the Beatles were at least one of the biggest rock bands (and those groups aren't all English, btw, OP).
by Anonymous | reply 119 | April 26, 2018 10:07 PM |
OP, you forgot King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer!
by Anonymous | reply 120 | April 26, 2018 10:21 PM |
R120 Ok giants of rock then
by Anonymous | reply 121 | April 26, 2018 10:59 PM |

So did most of the rest of us.
