Really scary little-known horror films
And by "little-known," I do NOT mean The Exorcist, The Shining, The Blair Witch Project, The Orphanage, The Conjuring, Insidious, It Follows, The Babadook, The Witch, Halloween, Psycho, It, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Rosemary's Baby, The Ring, Poltergeist, Carrie, or Scream.

Not sure if it counts as obscure now that there's a remake (which I haven't seen), but the original of "The Woman in Black" (1989) is incredibly creepy.

The Mephisto Waltz, 1971, starring Jacqueline Bisset, Alan Alda, Barbara Parkins, Bradford Dillman. Suspenseful plot about devil-worshippers, and a grand conspiracy. Very haunting and believable. Bissette and Parkins are in their prime. Excellent spellbinding film!

Demon Seed, 1977, starring Julie Christie, Fritz Weaver, Gerrit Graham. An early AI horror film that was way ahead of its time, but unlike other AI plots, "Proteus" runs into completely different territory. The sort of thing nightmares are made of.

It's Alive, 1974, starring John P. Ryan, Sharon Farell, James Dixon, William Wellman Jr., Guy Stockwell, Shamus Locke, Andrew Duggan, and Michael Ansara. Crazy deformed baby becomes a killer, and despite many attemps to kill the mutant, it survives repeated attempts on its life only to kill again! Receives 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still holds up well.

"The Legend of Hell House" from 1973 by Richard Matheson, starring Roddy McDowall, is the haunted house flick so many others have been based on -- psychic investigators, haunted mansion, all that. (The resolution's a bit lame, but up to that point pretty good!)

The House of the Devil, 2009, Dubbed more than a movie, it is an experience. Starring Jocelyn Donahue, Greta Gerwig, Mary Woronov, Tom Noonan, AJ Bowen, and Dee Wallace. Nostalgically set in the 80's, a young gal believes she is hired as a baby-sitter, but soon realises a deep dark secret was hidden from her, and all hell breaks loose in a haunted Victorian mansion. Receives 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Near Dark" is a great film but it's not really scary. It's more a vampire/western hybrid. The same is true of John Carpenter's "Vampires" which is a lesser film but a little scarier.

I think the movie has a few different titles but the plot is an obsessed and over protective mother literally wills her son killed in the Vietnam war back to life but he comes back as a blood thirsty ghoul. The mother was actually more scary than the son because at the end she pretty much offers to help him feed.

The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978) starring Bette Davis. It's actually a made for tv film (hides). But it's a spooky one with a cinematic feel. It's creepy and mean once it gets going. Bette is in excellent form throughout, late into her career. The actor who plays the dad is also hot.

Are you sure you're thinking of the right movie? The film came and went in the blink of an eye, and at its widest release, was only on 50+ screens. It didn't even gross half a million dollars. I remember wanting to go see it because it had been shot on HD Video (one of the earliest theatrical releases to have been) and I was curious how it looked, but it lasted all of three weeks in the theater.

Poor reviews of Orphan described the film as "sleazy horror", "genuine trash", and " formulaic horror-thriller". It did win the Brussells International Fantastic Film Festival though! I think the plot swiftly changing at the very end is what makes it so terrifying. There is no way you could say "you saw it coming", or that the premise is bad, as it only begins as a psychological thriller with bad-egg girl.

"The Return of Dracula" (1958), low-budget b.w, set in a little town in California of that time. All the more scary because of the every-day setting. Francis Lederer, a Hungarian heartthrob in 30s Hollywood, plays the count.

Here are some of the ones I've enjoyed lately.
Castle Freak - 80's monster flick that takes place in a spooky old Italian castle. The Green Room - A band performing in the middle of nowhere must escape a sinister club owner who wants them dead. The Autopsy of Jane Doe - A father son coroner duo deal with a strange, seemingly supernatural corpse that arrives at the morgue one night. Under the Shadow - Residents in a wartorn Middle Eastern housing complex have to deal with regular bombings and something darker lurks the halls. 10 Cloverfield Lane - A woman trapped in a post apocalyptic survival bunker must decide if the hell outside is worse than the one she's in. The Babysitter - Horny kid stas up to spy on the babysitter and gets way more than he bargained for. Under the Skin - A mysterious and dangerous woman wonders the streets looking for prey. Hounds of Love - A sadistic couple keeps a girl hostage to rape and murder her and she must survive against all odds.

"Rabid" an early Cronenberg film with Marilyn Chambers. Scary and funny at times. I laughed at the part when the tv reporter asks the coroner how the public can protect themselves, and he answers in a French Canadian accent, "Well, don't let anyone bite you"

Mario Bava's Shock is an excellent choice. It's Italian, but it was shot in English, so the dubbing isn't as atrocious as some other foreign movies. It was released under the title Beyond the Door II in the states, because they both starred the same little boy. There are some genuinely unnerving moments in there.

The Redeemer (a.k.a. Class Reunion Massacre) is a trippy nightmare of a movie. The first 10 minutes are nearly incomprehensible, but the film finds its footing once it starts to introduce us to its ensemble of characters and it becomes very creepy. It's a hard film to describe, because the set up sounds like your basic slasher flick (the plot is similar to that of the 80's cheese fest Slaughter High), but it leaves so many questions unanswered that it becomes like a masterpiece of surrealism. It really is incredibly nightmarish. We never find out why the guy is killing everyone or what these people ever did to him and he has a weird knack for wearing disguises before every killing (almost like Snow White's evil queen, which gives the movie a weird fairy tale quality). I think it's on Amazon Prime and it's well worth checking out.

The Funhouse from 1981. Teenagers decide to spend the night at a carnival funhouse only to witness a murder by the carnival owner's hideously deformed son. They then try to evade the owner and deformed son the rest of the night while trapped in the Funhouse. For the time, the creature in the movie was really good work by the film crew.

R147- "Suspiria", an excellent choice. Remember seeing it at the drive-in as a kid and being terrified. Didn't include it 'cause I thought it might be too well known. The lighting, cinematography and soundtrack make the movie special.
R164- If the "Duel" you are talking about is the one with Dennis Weaver(Spielberg's first as director, I think) also an excellent choice. Unreal suspense. I STILL wanna know who or what was in that truck!

R86, I am the person who recommended The Invitation. I apologize for not seeing your post until just now. Anyway, this is a psychological horror movie in the view of The Strangers and You're Next. Basically an iteration on the "something is out to get you and it's inside the house" trope, but with a number of clever twists. And it is truly terrifying. I don't want to give too much away. I recommend that you queue it up, it will draw you in within the first two minutes. You will thank me.

Drag Me to Hell, 2009 , starring Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Rave, Dileep Rao, David Paymer, Bojana Novakovic Adriana Barrazza may qualify as mainstream, but as it wasn't popular when it debuted, it was only in theatres for a short spell. Some of the plot is simple old fashioned suspense, but things eventually take a turn down a shady lane. Realistic, and startlingly scary at times. Ending disappointing to many. Unique plot and development.

“The White Ribbon” directed by Michael Haneke.
Personally, I think he’s the best horror director out there, because it’s a mind-fuck. Everything that happens in his films is ordinary. No ghosts, bloodbaths, demons or chainsaws. Just fucked-up people and subtle menace.

“The Void”, a Canadian horror pic made with some pretty gruesome practical effects and Lovecraftian sensibility.
An unsettling hospital setting, a murderous cult, trapped protagonists, and the most striking gore effects I’ve seen in a horror movie this year.
