Heading to the Southern White House to watch the Funeral Service of Barbara Bush. First Lady Melania has arrived in Houston to pay our respects. Will be a beautiful day!
BUT!
President Obama has to sit right next to Melanie...err, Melody... err, what's that gal's name? You know who.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 21, 2018 3:55 PM |
Melania's dressed for hours of pounding clothes with rocks down by the river.

Melania T is seated right next to President Obama. He seemed to be kindly trying to engage her in conversation before the service began, and I'm sure he was kind. She seems kind of lost.

by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 21, 2018 4:04 PM |
Thank God they put Melania at the opposite end of the pew of former presidents/wives from Hillary. We wouldn't want a brouhaha to break out during the funeral.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 21, 2018 4:04 PM |
Are the Carters too frail to attend?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 21, 2018 4:05 PM |
So Chelsea, Caroline Kennedy and Patricia Nixon Cox and her husband Ed are there. So is that vile bastard Rumsfeld and I haven't seen Cheney but I bet he's there. Condi, of course. I'm surprised Colin Powell isn't there.
Melania is sitting next to Barack and he is chatting away. Very gracious to her. She looked very nervous flying solo. But I'm glad she has the exposure to the larger world so she can fully appreciate what a loser her husband and his crowd are. If Brbara Bush were living she would tell Melania to leave that fucking traitor.

I think even Trump knows enough not to tweet anything during the funeral, but would love to see him blow a gasket about something he saw during the coverage and live tweet his feelings.
Melania is against bullying R47- still not sure if that was blatant trolling on Trump's part or not.

by Anonymous | reply 95 | April 21, 2018 4:49 PM |
Earlier this week my husband and I were talking about what a CUNT Barbara Bush proved herself to be over and over. Then the other night I was reading a CNN story written by one of her former detail agents, and started getting a little nostalgic for my own mom and other larger-than-life women like them who are now gone. So I posted something really nice and respectful on my FB page. Today my husband said "Where did that come from, weren't we just talking about what a nasty woman she was?"
I said well I know, but praise in public especially at someone's funeral. And as much as I dislike that family they are mourning. So now I'm here reading the comments and pretending we're eating church lady food and gossiping about the family and everyone else.
Goodbye, Bar, you old complicated cunt. Finally the portal to hell that was your vagina is sealed.

R120, so sorry. It's such a kick in the gut. Nothing like it. Try to do something in your mom's name and memory that will make you smile over the years. The 30th anniversary of my mother's death is nearing and the pain and loss never really goes away completely. I also worry for some crazy reason that I won't live past my mother's age at death. Now that the service is over, she was known as Bar "Sea Hag" Bush on DL for many years. And her remarks after Hurricane Katrina refugees were bussed to Houston ("This is all working out quite well for them") will live in infamy.

You have to understand the times, R159. What many of you youngins' take for granted, and are just dismissive about, were really huge movements forward for our country. It's very true that there were mothers who would not hold their AIDS babies (or prevented from doing so) and so when Barbara Bush was determined to hold a baby and hug people afflicted with AIDS that was HUGE! It broke down A LOT of barriers and misconceptions. Many couldn't stand her husband but she was the country's grandmother.

I think Melania was told they had been at the WH for Bush and loved Barbara Bush. So she decided to take them with her. Look. Given how her husband is constantly shitting himself in public, and he has insulted everyone that matters in that fucking audience today, and given the fact he humiliates her publicly all the time, and would probably be uncontrollably jealous of her if she ever dared to go off on her own and become as popular as the other first ladies, I cut her some slack. I think she was probably very nervous today. I think it's good for her to get out without that shit faced scum bucket, and be around real civil people who are not coarse and crude and dishonest. They are graceful and decent and I think she can see the contrast. Finally. When Trump brought her to Washington as First Lady her world got a lot bigger. I'm sure that pisses him off.

I'm not R261 but I give her just a little slack--very little. It must be hard to be so disliked because her husband is so absolutely despised. Now, she's had her mess too but I do believe that she does admire Michelle Obama and that she would like to do more as FLOTUS. But, she knows her husband and is afraid of upstaging him. I read somewhere recently that she plans to go forward with her war against cyber-bullying regardless of what others are telling her what to do. So, she might be finding her voice.
I don't know... I feel that she really wanted to attend today's service because she felt it, not only her duty (and honor) to do so, but she REALLY wanted to. But, she's got an uphill battle. I think I have only seen her maybe twice on the cover of major magazines since she's been FLOTUS. No one really reports on her fashion and in my opinion she's worn very little that has been stunning. No one really interviews her either. I don't know... I'm pretty sure that she's not happy simply being thought as the "trophy wife" and as an afterthought at that.

[quote]She's done a lot of things on her own that are nasty and cruel.
Like what? The birther business is the only thing I can think of. I ask because I am leaning toward pitying her. Bear with me.
First of all, I think she's shallow and not terribly intelligent. You just have to look at her life before the White House. But I have no doubt he deceived her... was on his best behaviour until they were married. If you look at these reports about her anger over Stormy Daniels, you have to figure she found out something she didn't know (but probably suspected.) I don't think she's malicious, necessarily, I just don't think she has much of a clue. She came to New York to be model and marry rich man. Well, she did, and now her tits are splashed everywhere and she married to the thing that ate the White House. I don't think she was stupid enough to do that knowingly, which I think means she was not smart enough to fall into it all unknowingly.
Her life seems to me classic be careful what you wish for. But I do think there have been times she trolls him with some of her offsides... like the visit to the Holocaust memorial, the solo trip to the State of the Union, the cancellation of the overseas trip, hell - even the am interest in cyber bully may be in part or whole because every time it gets mentioned it get mentioned what an online asshole he is.
I think she's a moderately intelligent social climber in over her head. So I feel sorry for her.

You can't blame her refusal to take on first lady responsibilities on Trump's brutish behavior. That's silly. She knew exactly who Trump was before she married him. She knew him for several years before she married him. Even he can't keep up a charade for that long. She did an interview back in 1999 saying what kind of first lady she would be if he was president. People need to look at this video again to see what kind of person she is.

I feel indifference toward Melania.
I feel that she could have done MUCH better in the spouse department. Surely she had better Johns than Trump before she met him. Perhaps they were married, or otherwise unavailable for a relationship leading to marriage.
Girls in her former profession can get more than lucky, and meet a man who falls in love with them, and all of that. But it’s rare that a man who hires pros will stay faithful once married.
That said, I think she actually believed that she loved him at one point. Perhaps she still does. Regardless, she understands him, and will do his bidding when asked nicely.
I don’t believe that she’s an evil cunt. I believe she fell for DJT’s scams, like so many others have. I think she wanted a very comfortable life, and didn’t mind the glitz and glamour that came along with dating a pseudo-celebrity. It gave her a certain amount of credibility, even though most New Yorkers know Trump is pure trash. At that time, I believe she genuinely did not know any better.
I do believe she married him for money, when the rubber met the road. By the time she walked down that aisle, she knew enough to get out. But what better options did she have by then?
I had an opportunity to marry someone I grew to care for very much, and I would have been set for life. When he asked, I initially said yes, then said no, And that’s all she wrote. But I speak perfect English. I’m well educated, I’ve supported myself financially all of my adult life, and I didn’t have to escort in order to do so. Don’t misunderstand, I considered it. I have no moral quandary with escorting, but I just cannot bring myself to fuck men I care nothing about.
Melania hit the lottery when she met Trump. Unfortunately, Trump did not feel he had hit the lottery when he met her. Nothing is special, or unique to that man. He has no sense of value regarding a good wife, a family, or home.
She’ll be fine no matter what. Don’t feel too bad for her. She has no idea you exist, anyhow.
May Babs RIP. 92 ain’t half bad at all.

R97, so Poppy is a closeted bisexual man. Interesting. She cut her hair short and let it go to look like a man, and as a symbol of her outrage and rebellion against George not being able to truly, sexually appreciate her. Not to look like his mother, unless he specifically asked her to do so.
The mistress must have been a state of the art ball buster, and George was clearly her submissive.
No wonder Bar Bush drank like a fish and smoked like a chimney. She was married to a bi closeted man at best, and he never wanted him in the way she wanted him.
Maybe I’m totally off, and he was actually more into children. NOT equating homosexuality to pedophilia, by the way. But something was obviously off in that marriage.
Straight women (other than those in academia) do not allow themselves to age as Barbara Bush did. I don’t mean her look at 70. I mean her look in the late 1970s. They especially don’t go down that route if they have competition, and straight women ALWAYS have competition.
I wonder what the details are of that marriage? It must have been hell for her.

There has been, going back to Hoover, many times where Presidents have called on former Presidents for guidance, support, as representatives, etc. This has happened publicly or quietly or some mixture. I actually believe that there is a real bond between these families since they have shared experiences that no one else in the world could have felt. The best book about this is The Presidents Club. Within it time and time again foes and rivals have come together to root for their country. Ford and Carter (as well as Bush 41 and Clinton) come to mind. To my knowledge, other than a few comments by Carter about Trump, there has been no interactions between the former Presidents and the current regime and that is a waster opportunity.

I understand the Presidents and First Ladies coming together to send off one of their own, but I don't get the children. [quote]To my knowledge, other than a few comments by Carter about Trump, there has been no interactions between the former Presidents and the current regime and that is a waster opportunity.
But, the former presidents have come together to speak out against Trump! Even President Daddy Bush has uttered his displeasure from his wheelchair! They are trying to respect the power and position of the office but like most of us they can see that Trump is trying to, (and maybe without knowingly so), destroying the country.
The children of presidents are indeed very friendly with each other and keep some sort of contact. Being a child of the POTUS is never easy and can destroy the lives of the kids. I think all of FDR's kids had issues.

Loyal until the end: Secret Service agents who served Barbara Bush for decades and who she treated like 'family' refuse to leave her coffin
The agents stood by the former First Lady's coffin at St Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas
Some have served her for decades since she left the White House and said she treated them like family
Barbara's Secret Service code name was Tranquility which former agents said was perfect for her character
The 92-year-old was laid to rest on Saturday in Houston. She died on April 17
But in the hearse with Mrs. Bush, along the path from Houston to College Station and her final burial place, will be two Secret Service agents who were part of her team.

IF George HW Bush and the rest of the family doesn't want Trump at his funeral they can do it this way. He's entitled to lie in state. So they can either ship his ass to D.C for 224 hrs. Which, IMO is a waste, or they can have him lie in state at his Library. Which is preferable. Trump can fly out there to the library for a brief ceremony and then leave and the family can have a "private" service at church in Houston for family and friends. I thought it was incredibly odd that neither Rubio or Cruz even showed up during the visitation. That was just wrong. And you know, it could be that all three of them were afraid of offending Trump's base. Mitt, Rubio and Cruz. Now Rubio isn't running for re-election this year but Romney is running for a vacant seat in Utah, and they said there are some concerns about the extreme elements in the Utah GOP. Cruz has a tough fight on his hands for re-election in Texas. Of course I don't think the Bushes like Ted much. But Rubio and Jeb used to be close up until about three or four years ago. There was a time when civility dictated that you left politics at the door and stood in unity and respect at times like this. I hope we can get back to some of our traditions.

This could have been that opportunity. Yes, many people did not like the policies of President Daddy Bush or Jr but Barbara Bush was overwhelmingly popular. As I wrote upthread, she was considered America's grandmother. Her death and service has moved the needle a bit in regards to bringing this nation together. It would have been a feather in Trump's cap had he attended and played nice. But, he can't do it that. It's just simply not in him. What has happened is his likability has decreased a bit more today.

R336 / r337 JFK at Elanor Roosevelt's funeral was probably the last time a sitting president attended a first ladies' funeral. The only other time since then was when Bill Clinton attended the private, graveside blessing of Jackie Kennedy. He skipped the public funeral that Hillary Clinton attended. Michelle and Barack both appear to have their hands behind their backs. Very unusual for a group picture like this. And Melania is not touching Michelle either. Compare that with the Bushes and Clintons with their arms around each other.
The body language of both Obamas is, we don’t want to touch her. And Melania and Michelle’s smiles don't reach their eyes. I think that was a very stressful day for them, especially the Obamas. They were forced to interact with her and probably escorted her all day. She was very out of place there and probably didn’t know anyone but the Obamas, and they had no reason to be kind to her after that birther crap. They just did the decent thing and were not overly warm or comfortable with her, judging from the body language in the picture. But they are good at being gracious even when it is undeserved.

In that photo, the Bushes and the Clintons are kind of huddled together as far away from Melania as its possible to get, while Barack is kind of bridging the two sides and Michelle has to be the one next to Melania. I think Melania is terrified of Trump. That kind of man is sweet as pie until you say 'I do' then the mask comes off. He probably told her (and possibly correctly) that he could send her back to Slovenia, or do bad things to her parents or Barron if she didn't stay in line.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | April 22, 2018 2:53 PM |
R71, I don't know if someone else has already posted this, but bringing up Hillary alone is a sign that you've been brainwashed by a right-wing talking point.
"Although Pat Nixon was living in New Jersey at the time of her death, her funeral and burial were conducted at the Nixon Presidential Library in her native southern California. The two former First Ladies who lived relatively close, Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan were in attendance, along with their husbands and the widowed President Nixon. The incumbent First Lady Hillary Clinton sent regrets due to previously scheduled events involving her young daughter. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis sent a letter to Mrs. Nixon shortly before her death, but did not attend the funeral, nor did the other living Democratic First Ladies, Rosalynn Carter and Lady Bird Johnson. Thus the guest list seemed to divide along partisan lines, which was unusual."

This was all about politics & optics. I think that when taking photos or being seen in public on TV as they were at church, there was no way Michelle or Barack or any of them were going to look too friendly with Melania. It sends the wrong signal and appearances count. Look at the way we, and the media have been dissecting what little we've seen.
I don't think they snubbed her at the reception. I think they were polite and cordial. No hugs and kisses but no coldness either. They wanted Mellie to go home and report how nice everyone was and kind. And she will. There is no way any of those people wanted to let Trump believe Melania was mistreated in any way.
By being cordial and kind they were sending him a very obvious message. Oh, and I do think Trump is abusive to her. Both mentally and physically. He seems perfectly capable of smacking her in the face if she gets out of line.

If you ever had the opportunity to watch Oliver Stone's movie "W" that was exactly his angle. By the time that George Bush realized that things were not going right all of it was already in motion and messes were being created. Michelle and Laura Bush have formed a friendship , and gradually the Obamas the Clintons and the Bush 43 are becoming close. Of course Bill Clinton and 41 are closest of all. Obama and 43 are getting there. Obama once said that while he admires Bill Clinton's political smarts, Bill gets on his nerves because he is ALWAYS talking. This may seem precious, but Obama and Hillary are much closer than Bill and Barack are and it is largely due to the fact that Barack has never got over the way Bill fucked over Hillary. It is hard to imagine a scheduling conflict that would give Trump a dignified out. He could never allow it to be admitted the family preferred he not attend (and I think the family would grit their teeth and respect the office, if not the occupant, and allow the presence.). But Trump being Trump I could see him playing the security excuse again and staying away, to everyone's great relief.

I think the problem with Jimmy is he always follows his own agenda and is not a team player. No matter what the occasion he promotes his own foundation and it's work even when he is on stage supposedly helping with fundraising for hurricane relief with his fellow ex presidents. He's rude too, and ungenerous to them. He seems to feel competitive and likes to toot his own horn so to speak. So generally an unpleasant personality, and very rigid, not easy to get along with. He is always right always has to have the last word. No wonder he and Clinton never got along. He admitted on Larry King, back in the 90's, that he didn't talk to Clinton, when he needed something from the WH he called VP Gore.

I'm just a big ole Mary. Stuff like this gets to me. I do believe that public service is one of the biggest sacrifices that anyone can make. And, if you do a great job for the people you will be appreciated. I've only seen it twice but I became very emotional when at the end of the Pope's (the one before this one) funeral the pall bearers turned his coffin towards the people and the audience began applauding wildly. the same thing happened at Ted Kennedy's funeral also. Well done. To service well done!!!
It's the same with Queen Elizabeth too. I saw a clip of something where she was standing on stage at some very large stadium. The stadium was filled with various ages and ethnicities. The audience then began to sing "God Save The Queen" to her. Many in the audience sang with such fervor and feeling! There were more than a few who had tears while they sang looking directly her way. And Elizabeth, this small old lady, stood stoically center stage and absorbed it all! Quite moving!

Trump and his craven bastards have been pounding on Hillary relentlessly. They intend to make her the focus of the Midterms. Do the American people not see how this relentless persecution of your political opponents is very unAmerican, very much like what happens in dictatorships and authoritarian governments? It is a disgrace and ought to be illegal if it isn't already. And the behavior of Congress is beyond shameful. I wouldn't blame Hillary and Bill for not wanting to be in the same space as Melania. And they all know by now for sure if they weren't aware before, but the Obamas and the Clintons and Bush 43 know what has been going on with Trump, his cabinet the "new" GOP Congress and the Russians. They all get national security briefings and they all are well aware of the dots being connected through this investigation. Melania probably knows less than anyone in Trump's world except maybe Barron, about what is going on, but you can bet Michelle and Laura Bush as well as all the others know.

‘Morning Joe’ host: Trump tweeting during Barbara Bush funeral ‘insulting’ to US
Hosts on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday ripped President Trump for tweeting on Saturday during the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush.
Host Mika Brzezinski called Trump’s tweets “especially insulting to the United States of America” on a day “the world said goodbye to Barbara Bush.”
Panelist Mike Barnicle referenced a photo that went viral after the funeral showing current first lady Melania Trump; former Presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama; and former first ladies Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama.
“It’s a reminder of who we used to be as a government and as people who participated in politics,” Barnicle said.
“That’s the America that the president of the United States denigrated Saturday during a funeral service with his tweets, many of which are outright lies,” he added.
Trump did not attend Bush's funeral on Saturday, and instead watched from his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida. While he did not tweet during the church service portion of the funeral, he sent multiple tweets in the hours that followed.
One tweet mocked a recent Democratic National Committee lawsuit over hacked emails.
Another, sent a short time later, attacked former FBI Director James Comey and accused him of breaking the law by leaking classified memos.
Trump's third tweet on Saturday afternoon bashed The Washington Post for a report that Trump calls Attorney General Jeff Sessions "Mr. Magoo" and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein "Mr. Peepers."

The thing about Carter is that he decides what he thinks is right, does his own thing and always has. If you read Presidents Club there's various points where Carter went off on his own in a foreign country and caused headaches for the present Administration.
[quote] Lady Bird and Jackie O remained lifelong friends and Lady Bird would go to Martha's Vineyard every summer to stay with Jackie.
That's not entirely accurate. Lady Bird visited Martha's Vineyard for many years and would visit with Jackie, but she didn't stay with her to my knowledge. She would rent an apartment. Lady Bird was the only former First Lady invited to Jackie's funeral. Hillary was was First Lady attended. Jackie never did any of the reunions of first ladies or presidents. There were numerous times when she was alive where they all gathered (mostly at library openings) and she never attended.
[quote] [R399], The Trumans and the Eisenhowers hated each other. On Ike's Inauguration Day in 1953, rather than enter the White House to have the traditional tea with the outgoing POTUS and FLOTUS, Ike and Mamie chose to wait outside in their limo. Truman and Ike rode to the Capitol together in silence.
This is true, however after the Kennedy funeral they shared a car home and the Trumans invited the Eisenhowers into their home and had what was said to be a very enjoyable time.
[quote] Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter became close friends after the election. Strange that the only president who got on with Jimmy Carter was the one who lost his presidency to him.
Reagan sent Carter, Nixon and Ford to Sadat's funeral. Nixon left the caravan to go to some other country (which caught the Reagan White House by total surprise) and Carter and Ford chatted the whole way home. It became a lifelong friendship. that was probably one of the closest we've ever seen.
[quote] Also, Ford and Reagan supposedly strongly disliked each other behind the scenes.
Well they were very competitive. Recall, Reagan challenged Ford, who was a sitting President for a second term in 1976. Recall how annoyed people are at Bernie and Hillary wasn't even in office.

I read only recently that both Truman and Eisenhower thought JFK's funeral was way, way over the top and way beyond appropriate for whatever accomplishments JFK had made.
Given the mood at the time, it's hardly surprising that their opinions were never revealed at the time.
But, on reflection, they were right.
Jackie, obviously suffering from PTSD, was intent on securing a legacy for her husband. And it was not long after that she gave the "Camelot" tale to Theodore H White. I was a "true believer" at the time and bought it all hook, line and sinker. But as more and more came out about what really went on in the White House under JFK's watch, the idea of JFK and Jackie sitting together at night listening to records, is more and more ridiculous. Along with that, I would not be surprised to discover that Jackie eventually rued the day she came up with that whole idea as it followed her for the rest of her life and the lives of her children.

Oh, I disagree. I thought after the horror of the assassination, and the murder of Oswald on live TV, it was important and oddly comforting to be able to watch the pageantry of a state funeral. Kennedy didn't die of old age or after a long illness. He was assassinated inside the United States, right out in public, in broad daylight. Looking at the Zapruder film, and at photos and video from that day, it is stunning to see how he was riding in an open car plainly visible and waving and smiling, and moments later there was a mist of blood and brain matter and the First Lady, who's reputation for poise and grace, etc. climbing on top of the trunk of the Limo, etc. No. We need to have that funeral unfold exactly as it did. I applaud Jackie for that.

The NY Times ' reporting on the funeral Mass and Arlington burial on Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis.
First Lady Hillary Clinton and former FL Ladybird Johnson were at the Church (lovely that Mrs Johnson walked the front steps with a cane, rather than being brought around back). Ted Kennedy eulogized and Maurice T read a favorite poem of Jackie's.
At the burial, President Bill Clinton was present and gave a well-regarded eulogy.
In her last summer, Jackie had hosted Bill and Hillary for a sailboat ride off her Martha's Vineyard home.

Truman and Eisenhower were competent Presidents. But from the get-go of Kennedy's campaign, they were jealous of him. Ike was really upset that JFK won and was mostly as ass to President Kennedy. Did you ever hear the recording of the phone call when Kenndy called Eisenhower for advice and Ike wouldn't really give an answer? And we all know what Mamie did to Jackie! My bet would be Bess and Mamie were ashamed at how they each of them decorated that tacky White House. So I don't want to hear their comments about either Kennedy's.

You left each of us so much and taught us about the importance of family, about caring for everyone, about passion for doing what's right, and about living life with purpose and grace. And for all that, we give you our thanks.

Both Truman and Eisenhower were satanist mass-murderers now burning in hell.
(But an Indian sage believes that Eisenhower has been re-incarnated as a one-celled amoeba!)

This is fast.
I was taught that you had to wait a year before you installed a headstone in order to let the coffin settle in the ground. I guess that was the incorrect information.

We suspect he has to cover the bulge from a 'bag'.
Discuss!
