There shouldn't be prescription drugs. Just go in and get what you want. No pharmacists needed. No doctor needed. If you have side effects or an emergency, then it's on you to pay for that, so do your homework before taking something. Or, consult a doctor before taking something if you are sick and it's a complicated situation. The same should go for blood tests, MRIs, etc... just walk in and tell them what you want to be tested for. No doctor needed to request any test. If you need help analyzing the results, then you can pay for a radiologist's opinion or whoever else.
If you want to kill yourself or be addicted to opiates / benzos / whatever - that's your choice. In fact, they need to bring the suicide drugs back (darvon, nembutal, etc) for people who want to exit this would peacefully - for any reason. If you want to be a juice head, all the testosterone, HGH, and steroids are available w/ clean sterile needles. Then you can get your labs done without seeing a "male sexual health specialist" who is just going to do the same thing under the guise of aging or depression or some bs.
Perhaps for the greater good of society & the health of others, antibiotics are the only thing that should be regulated (to reduce resistance). But in some countries (like India), you can get plenty of antibiotics and antivirals (valtrex) you want over the counter... so even on this one, I am conflicted. Maybe there should be a test that you have to take before you're allowed to get them, like with your drivers license.
I bring this up from time to time with different people and they get viscerally angry about this whole idea.... so I don't want to trigger anyone. This is just my clearly unpopular opinion.

I am a lifelong Democrat and despise Trump, but as long as our party is the party of illegals and trans, we are going to continue to lose. Oh, and all the Russian trolls in the world wouldn't make a lick of difference if our own people bothered to vote. We love going to marches and protest rallies after the fact, but when it really counts, we don't register and we don't vote. Or we protest vote for Jill Stein/Ralph Nader because the Dem isn't ideologically pure enough. We are to blame for the mess we find ourselves in, but saying so gets you labeled a freeper/Trump lover.
Trans is a mental illness. Demanding that you are a different biological sex than what you are biologically born with is every bit as nuts as claiming you are a different race, a different age, or an alien. I really want a trans person to explain to me how they should be taken seriously, but Rachel Dolezal or Stefonknee shouldn't.

Most gay men are porn and sex obsessed and completely incapable of long term, meaningful relationships. At least in my generation (30s-40s). When dating someone, it becomes apparent fairly quickly that he is going through the motions until someone better (looks, body, or $$$) comes along. And most gay men are completely unrealistic about what they look like and what they can get, so there are an awful lot of middle aged, average looking dudes with average bodies who feel entitled to hot, 25 year old jocks. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.
Yeah a lot of straight people are like that too, but they aren't in my dating pool, so why bitch about them?

This "Golden Age of Television" is overrated. When reboots like Roseanne and Will and Grace are outperforming cable and internet shows, there's a reason why. There's still a big audience for traditional sitcom type shows. With corny cheesiness. Or they want soapy style dramas .
Knock network TV all you want but it's their comedy shows like "Modern Family" and "Big Bang Theory" and their dramas that are doing gangbusters in syndication and are going to be remembered decades down the line. These cables shows with their short seasons and small, niche audiences will not.

This bickering on both sides is tiresome to me, and not going to solve anything. What about reasonable dialogue and common sense problem solving?!?! For instance abortion... I never understood this "abortion on demand" proclamation... What the fuck does that exactly mean?? There's got to be a point in time in the pregnancy where it's just too late to have an abortion, Where the baby has a reasonable chance of survival outside of the womb.. Also, women should be taught to take more responsibility about birth control and not just let some guy cum in her because she has daddy issues and/or wants something to love, but then has regrets later. And on the other side, conservatives need to fucking chill out.. Maybe push for comprehensive sex education in school starting at an early age. Part of that sex education would include all methods of birth control. Also, the morning after pill isn't such a crazy thing...
Remember attorney general Jocelyn Elders ?!?! She promoted masturbation as one of the methods of birth control and people lost their collective shit because she told the truth, and was being completely honest..

[quote]There's got to be a point in time in the pregnancy where it's just too late to have an abortion,
Well, there is.
"Three states currently ban abortions in the third trimester and 15 states ban it about 20 weeks post-fertilization (or about 22 weeks after the last period), according to the Guttmacher Institute. For 19 other states, the guideline for considering an abortion to be "late term" and illegal is if the fetus is considered "viable," or that it could survive outside the womb. Most medical communities consider that to be about 24 weeks, according to the American Pregnancy Association. "

I stand by Alec Baldwin as both an entertainer and as a person. I'm willing to say he has a short temper, but probably not more or less than the average person and the some (many) of his outbursts were caused from being pushed too far. For example, the incident where he called his daughter a pig was and is still overblown - nothing that some other parents have called their children at one time or another AND his daughter went on record to say not only did she forgive him, but harbored no grudge and deserved it at the time. Also, the infamous "f*cking f*ggot" incident was caused by frequent harassment by one paparazzi in particular at whom Baldwin launched the epithet. Additionally, Baldwin has never acted in any way showing he's virulently anti-LGBT (and I also believe he's dabbled in m/m sex).

There needs to be a test to vote. You need to demonstrate basic logical reasoning like you do the SAT, and then there will be sections on economics, foreign policy, healthcare, and general civics. This is not to prevent 1 side from winning & the test won't have any partisan slant. It is to ensure people
A lot of people will be prevented from voting by this and this violates the constitution... so that won't ever happen but that is my opinion on the matter.
by Anonymous | reply 278 | April 4, 2018 8:13 PM |
R278 I think that opinion is far more popular and wide spread than you think. I know at least one other person who shares it,
by Anonymous | reply 279 | April 5, 2018 12:10 AM |
I get what you mean r278 but there are plenty of those sovereign citizen whackjobs who could quote civics, economics and foreign policy chapter and verse but they are still crazy.
It wouldn’t disbar the crazies from voting it would only disenfranchise those who know what is right and wrong for them but don’t keep up with what’s going on in SE Asia or how the Nasdaq is doing.
by Anonymous | reply 280 | April 5, 2018 12:15 AM |
R280 - That's true. It isn't meant to keep out the Trump voters as a whole or anything like that. And it shouldn't be so complicated that it rules out more than 10% of the population who are just completely clueless to the point that their votes are dangerous. We also all know the issue with people voting against their own interests, and it would be interesting to see if they could learn a little more about what they are voting for, if they'd still do that. Who knows - maybe nothing can help them.
I just don't think uneducated people should vote. It's not that long ago that people thought women shouldn't vote. So, it's not THAT far fetched. (Women should vote - but only 90% of them!)
It would also encourage people to learn actual facts - not fake facts - before taking the test & deciding who to vote for.
Single issue voters (abortion and guns) wouldn't change their mind either after they get their test approval.
Anyway, it can never happen. It actually came up when I was in college a long time ago & we had to debate it & write a paper pro/con. I just think it's an interesting idea.

I agree about the test, but would make it fairly easy. I don't expect most people to remember complex algebra, be able to discuss Proust, ponder the great philosophers, or know the complex political structure of various countries, but...
If you go on Youtube there are several variations of the old Jay Leno "man on the street" bit. There are people out there who can't even tell you who the Vice President is, what year the Declaration of Independence was signed, or find countries like Brazil or France on a map/globe. On and on and on with really basic things even little kids know. I watch those vids with morbid curiosity and horror, and think to myself every time, "these people vote!"
So it doesn't have to be anything too challenging, but cover very basic knowledge every American should know. I have a Swedish friend who recently got her citizenship, and she knows more about American government and history than most Americans I know. It is tragic.

Men and women are different in more than just their biology (and yes their biology IS different, very clearly so!!!). Men love sex and women hate it. A woman who is sex-obsessed is just as rare as a man who is sex repulsed. Straight men assume women think about porn, masturbation and sex as much as they do - but women only sleep with them as an attempt to get them to stick around.
A man can never become a woman. Men look, talk, behave and think VERY differently from women. All transgenders are either: women who are too cowardly to face discrimination against their sex, women who fetishise gay men, men who are too ashamed to be homosexual, or men who fetishise and HATE women. There are NO other options. All transgenderism is a political movement made up of hate. It must be stopped, or else it will eradicate ALL gay rights. In a decade when these trans kids (Jazz and the likes) grow up, realise they have a million health problems and are undateable/unemployable, they will sue their parents, and their homophobic parents will blame the gay agenda. Goodbye gay marriage.
Beyonce is overrated and so many other female singers are way better on the sheer fact that they write their own songs or play their own instruments. Her songs aren't even catchy, interesting or unique. People only like her because tv show hosts tell them to like her.

R297 has an interesting not far fetched outlook. I believe there are outliers in every aspect of the human experience. But they are mostly rare. For the most part people are inherently a certain way be it a boy, girl, gay, straight, trans, black, brown, white or purple. You can have traits of each other sure but I think there are certain special bits within individual groups of people that are a lot alike and unique to them. And I mean that in a total tribal unity pleasant not offensive way. I enjoyed reading your post R297. Thank you.
And Looking started off not bad and I loved seeing a gay show on TV. But it was borderline amateur. You can tell TV writers and producers are inexperienced when all their episodes rely on events to frame the episode. That's not tackling the human condition. Most people don't go to a party, restaurant opening, wedding, video game launch, or an some other event as a lifestyle. That was why when they did the playing hooky episode it was refreshing and at its best. Even if it was just an abbreviated Weekend redux. They missed the boat on the opportunity to explore every day ordinary gay life.

I cannot comprehend that, why women wouldn't want to date beautiful, elegant, feminine women. I don't that Camille Paglia is totally right about lesbians for some ideological reason, but because what she says is completely accurate as far as I have ever seen and come across. I mean, Haigh was basically clueless about TV.
There AREN'T that many openly gay/lesbian people in Hollywood who really know their shit AND want to explore G&L themes. I have been as lukewarm on Ryan Murphy (for example) as many, but when you see the AMERICAN CRIME: GIANNI VERSACE miniseries (for all its flaws), you really have to give him his due. The man understands TV and wants to tell G&L stories.
There are so many G&L people in the biz, but so many of them are really capable of all of the above. I've basically given up on openly G&L film directors, who constantly disappoint.

by Anonymous | reply 344 | April 8, 2018 8:29 PM |
I am not sure I agree, R344. The civil rights movements and free love movements of the 60s and 70s were really pushing things forward for gays, and we were making great strides until AIDS hit. That whole thing really forced people to focus on the negative stereotypes about gay men (that we were sexually promiscuous and disease ridden), and gave religious types ammunition that Sky Daddy was smiting us for our evil ways. Just look at TV, movies, and pop culture from the 70s, which was starting to give visibility to gay men, and then compare it with the hyper-masculine, homophobic, hair rock homophobia from the 80s.
Had it not been for AIDS, I think we would have gotten rights and marriage long before we did.

Are we even discussing the relevance of Margaret Cho?
Talented female comics come and go. Some have been smart enough to tap into a specifically gay (and hip) audience: Cho, Sandra Bernhard, Kathy Griffin, Sarah Silverman, and certainly, Joan RIvers) regardless of their own self-identified sexuality.
If they're smart, they'll respect and celebrate that audience without patronizing them. Rivers did. Silverman is uneven, but she's improved with age and is kind of great with G&L stuff.
By contrast, Griffin was always patronizing (and frankly, kind of limited) . Cho even more so. Bernhard was fun but was always a little fucked up on the G&L stuff, and has been running on fumes for decades now.

Regarding the transgendered, if one is born a male, he remains a male for the rest of his life. Even if his penis is molded into a vagina, he’s still a male. Nothing will change this in spite of the surgeries, the hormone pills, the cosmetics and the clothing. He is still a male. He could feel like a woman, but this doesn’t change the biological fact that he’s a man.
When a male to female transgendered person is confronted with this fact, they become angry, emotional, hostile and hysterical. They themselves, deep down, know it’s true and this drives them crazy.

Pride parades completely run contrary to what the majority of gay people whine about ("Why won't they accept us? We're NORMAL!"). Parades that only serve to underscore the fact that you like to fuck the same sex is doing nothing except enhancing the special snowflake status that gays (especially gay men) truly love.
It's a characteristic, not a community.

Bathroom rights are not equivalent to lost livelihoods. Whoever posted it above was correct, the Democrats needed to broadcast their message more loudly that they cared for everyone not just some transgendered person in North Carolina.
I have little sympathy for Hollywood actresses who were sexually harassed, accepted cash payoffs for their silence, and who now are speaking up. Most realized that Weinstein et al would continue to behave the way they did.
There's a large sector of the American public that is dumb. We can't change that.

If only he returned Tom Drake's unrequited love. Wow what a couple that would have been. As you can tell I've got quite a crush on Drake even more so than Lawford and it's sad knowing he ended up an alcoholic used car salesman dying in his early 60s.

I believe that all people who patronize the Catholic church, no matter how charitable they are, consciously support institutionalized child sex abuse. I just had it with a woman I work with. She knows several men who were raped by priests as boys. She sent her kids to Catholic school and whined the whole time (they’re in college now) she was worried her son might be molested and not tell her. She goes to church every Sunday and often complains about her homophobic priest’s sermons. She was just raving that a lifelong friend of her brother’s was raped by a priest and she thinks her brother’s depression could stem from the same trauma. So, I asked her, why do you support it? You give them your money and your time. You’re literally funding this cycle. Well most of the priests are good people, she said. It’s not their faults that there are a few bad apples. Nope, I said, the church has protected these violent criminals forever and it always will, and YOU are making it happen. You are funding a child rape crime ring. You are. You you you. Every time you give them a check or cash you’re funding their legal protections of child rapists. Every day you sent your kids to that Catholic school, knowing multiple men who had been raped in Catholic schools, you were giving up their bodies to potential rapists whether anything happened or not.
That is not a popular opinion. Not to 1.3 billion Catholic people, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 429 | April 15, 2018 12:49 PM |
I’ve had more or less the same conversation with a Catholic co worker r429. He was adamant that his money did not support sex abuse. I asked him where the church found all the millions of dollars it had to pay out to victims. I asked him who paid off the parents each time a priest was moved on to another parish instead of reported to the police. He was stymied.
If you give money to ANY organization that routinely covers up crime and blames the victim you are complicit in that crime. You are an enabler.

Around 90% of the 'child sex abuse crisis' in the Catholic Church was done by men who weren't sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children and who therefore aren't best described as pedophiles, but by gay men who were certainly sexually attracted to other men but who, being screwed-up themselves, principally went for easy to control and vulnerable targets: adolescent boys between the ages of 12-18. This makes them predatory older gay pederasts looking for fresh meat.
The Church is still entirely to blame for covering up what these bastards did, of course. But let's not pretend that the majority of them are best described as child-abusing pedophiles.

I think self-ascribed atheists are far more hateful, smug, obnoxious and delusional than religious people.
I think that South Park is one of the most dangerous shows on TV, not because of the vulgarity or shock humor but because of its politics. (I saw and heard more young people throw their vote in the last election using the "shit and turd sandwich" line more than I ever have since that episode aired.) I also think that its so-called political satire is moronic and lacking substance.
George Carlin was funny AF but he was not God and was not right about everything. He was also a very angry, embittered misanthrope and nihilist towards the end of his life, so people need to stop quoting his act in that phase of his career with a grain of salt.
Denis Leary stole nothing from Bill Hicks (you don't get to maintain a successful career for over 30 years by stealing five minutes worth of material from an unfunny hack). Even if Leary had stolen from Hicks, he was a million times funnier, anyway.
I hate It's a Wonderful Life with a passion. Why does George have a wonderful life? He had to sacrifice all his life goals and dreams to keep his wife from becoming a spinster, save the lazy slobs of Bedford Falls from themselves and make his selfish brother the town hero. Oh, and just because the people raised enough money to replace the money his uncle lost didn't mean that Mr. Potter was going to let him off the hook for embezzlement.

I think the SCOTUS gay marriage ruling was bullshit and a step back, not forward for us. The elitist 1% media hyped it up because it got a lot of clicks and had a simple narrative.
I would've rather had stronger job protections and anti-discrimination laws than same-sex marriage, which only applies to people in relationships, which is something totally irrelevant to my gay life.
I was just as Mary! as the next person seeing couples embracing after the ruling, but I'd rather be safe, secure and protected from job and housing discrimination.

I walked out of the first Star Wars one Saturday night right after it opened. Everyone rushed into the Times Square theatre so quickly, I lost my friends I came with. It seemed everyone lit up a joint the minute they sat down. I didn't smoke pot, so I left. I went downtown and picked up a trick and enjoyed myself much more than I would have if I'd stayed.
I didn't watch SW until 1998, when my next-door neighbor and I got the flu the same week, and decided to watch all three (at that time) SW movies.

Mark me down as another who is at peak "MeToo!"
Let me be clear. I am not a MRA douche and sympathize deeply with working class women in many industries who have to endure sexual harrassment and assault. I also agree that men like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein were pigs who deserved to be exposed.
But...there was a dialogue started about sexual harrassment almost 30 years ago with Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas, which would have been the perfect time to blow this wide open. And yet women in Hollywood continued to play the game, sleeping with men for parts and awards. A lot of it was not "rape-rape" (as Whoopi would say) but a tit for tat arrangement where they went along with it because they thought it would benefit their careers. And their silence meant it continued to happen so many, many more women were victimized tat otherwise wouldn't have been. Ao speaking out against it now comes off a bit less than genuine.
And the every day people on my Facebook feed (both men and women) seemed to be doing it more for a "Look at MEEEEE!" moment than for any concern for social justice.
So....from this point forward...if anyone harrasses or assaults you, immediately report it and see that justice is served and that they are prevented from continuing the behavior. Or else shut the fuck up.

I am a liberal and will vote Democrat til the day I die, but at this point it is ONLY because of the liberal justices they will appoint and/or confirm. The judicial branch of government is our last hope at this point, and so I will never vote for a Republican or waste a vote on someone like Ralph Nader or Jill Stein.
But I really do believe that most Democrats are every bit as corrupt and self-serving as Republicans. Hillary Clinton included. And refusing to acknowledge that she was a Wall Street shill, a war hawk, and poison for the Democratic party (though I will grant that the email, Benghazi, and other manufactured, whackadoodle conspiracy theories are unfair), makes you every bit as clueless as your average Trump supporter. Just look at the incomes and wealth of all our congressmen and Senators. The Dems are just as much part of the 1%er crowd as the Republicans.
Both sides need to stop worshiping personalities and get back to actually discussing issues AND WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE AND NOT JUST THE RICH CORPORATE DONORS, but as we live in a world of social media and Reality TV now, I fear this will never happen.
So...yes. Keep voting Dem for the judicial appointments. We simply must. But lets not pretend that most of the Dems in high offices care any more for the poor and disenfranchised than the Republicans do. They just talk a better game about it, which is why they are still just the lesser of two evils.

I am left wing, but I absolutely despise political correctness and how it just completely kills humour. A friend has recently become ultra PC about a million different things, and it feels like she is constantly outraged and irritable. It is such a terrible drag, and I don't think it actually achieves anything in the world anyway.

I think George W. Bush was a much worse president than Trump has been so far.

I loathe Meghan Markle and bitterly resent that you get called a racist for doing so. I wish to god Harry had chosen a black girl from the Commonwealth. but a phony, loud, American actress from LA: there are no words, The monarchy has just, abruptly, jumped the shark. ANd Meghan needs to put contracts out on her siblings. They will never ever ever stop bad-mouthing her.

Most critics think Ray of Light is Madonna’s masterpiece. But half the songs on Ray of Light are really bad. Shanti Ashtangi, Swim, Nothing Really Matters, Mer Girl, Candy Perfume Girl, Sky Fits Heaven — all terrible.

Many Democrats are sheeple with subpar to nonexistant objectivity who eagerly beat off to painfully obvious fake news. There is no wave. Dream the fuck on. Resistance is a showcase of Soros funded stupidly and lies.

Gay male couples, who have children together, should be married and remain married for the sake of their children. (There are exceptions, such as abuse). Their children, in all cases, must be first. They should set an example and work on their marital difficulties. In some cases, they become bored with the marriage and children and too often break up. The same is true with straight couples, less likely with lesbians. There are examples of celebrity gay couples who part ways with children involved. This sets a very poor example. Furthermore, because straight couples divorce with children involved does make it right. We, as gay men, should strive to be better.

Drunk driving, driving under the influence of drugs, distracted driving, and driving on too little sleep kill a lot of people in the US and should be as important as the gun control debate.

I’ve been treated with far more sensitivity, respect and kindness from straight men than from quite a few gay men.

I know she's a DL fave, but I absolutely cannot stand Julianna Margulies. She's ugly, manly, and cannot act.
How the hell does she ever get her own TV series? I would much rather see her ex Ron Eldard succeed. I just don't understand her appeal.

[quote]Nirvana is the most overrated band of all time
At least they had a couple of good songs, R147. O.k, one.
The Foo Fighters are far more overrated. Their music has always sounded like Bon Jovi to me.

I thought Paul Newman was at his peak looks wise in The Verdict/Absence of Malice era. His face had finally filled out a bit (it was on the skinny side when he was young), as did those gorgeous sculpted cheekbones, and he was fully grey by then which just made his blue eyes even more piercing and he was at his most distinguished. Mid/late 50s and more gorgeous then ever. Imo of course.

I LOVE the USA! We could turn the rest of the world into our parking lot but we won't and don't want to. For the very most part, we are exceedingly kind, generous, intelligent and TOLERANT. I've lived all over the world and know more than you intellectually lazy snarky bitches quoting Noam Chomsky or Howard Zinn, You wouldn't last three seconds anywhere else (except US protectorates like Europe, Australia, etc.). USA! USA! USA!

I think straight men are being punished for being men. The “me too” movement has morphed into a 21st century witch hunt.
A woman can make a false accusation, that she was sexually harassed and abused, and she’s automatically believed. In the meantime, the man’s life is in ruins. Even sex was consensual, she can still say it wasn’t.
