Netflix!

Gay fashion minstrels in non-sexual service to a het guy.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 18, 2018 6:44 PM |
Q***r is hate speech against gays, and calling heterosexual perversion "straight" not only gives it an unearned sense of entitlement to claim moral legitimacy, but it makes it sound like there's something wrong with being GAY.
I'm this close to cancelling Netflix and calling for a War on Clothes.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 18, 2018 6:55 PM |
I absolutely HATED the original and think it set back the gay equality movement a bit.
No one could imagine these stereotypical "all we're good for is decorating" gays actually seriously getting married and raising kids.
In a time when we didn't see people playing gay professionals like doctors, lawyers, and engineers on TV, having a show like that just wasn't helpful.
Times have changed of course--to the point that I doubt anyone cares about fashion advice from gays in particular.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 18, 2018 7:01 PM |
The worst part of the show was that, after the gaggle of gays helped the straight guy become fashionable, the gays watched on the TV while all the straights were having fun without them.

Is NBC trying to kill us?

Netflix will recycle anything.

^That's it right there. Money's all that matters, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 18, 2018 8:01 PM |
The show was one-joke embarrassment the first time around. Let's see how Netflix does with this. Attempting to recreate a 15-year old cultural moment is risky. Trash programming in any case. The producers should be publicly flogged.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 18, 2018 8:08 PM |
Sounds like it'll be fun.

How soon before they put a trans person in there to get the show shut down?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 18, 2018 8:33 PM |
the TV world has officially run out of ideas with all these reboots from 20 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 18, 2018 8:41 PM |
I’m going to assume that those complaining didn’t actually watch the trailer, because if you did you would see how good it looks. Not only did I get chills, but I teared up a little bit too.
This show does a lot of good for the queer/gay community by building bridges with the straight community.
And Jesus, for the last time, queer is NOT a derogatory word. No one thinks so except for a few nuts here on DL.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 18, 2018 9:36 PM |
R5 back to their "quarters", if you will.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 18, 2018 9:38 PM |
God there’s some messed up queens on the datalounge
As to the trailer, how was the original show “fighting for tolerance”? It was mindless fluff
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 18, 2018 9:44 PM |
The grooming guy is cute but also looks like he smells.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 18, 2018 9:46 PM |
[quote]And Jesus, for the last time, queer is NOT a derogatory word. No one thinks so except for a few nuts here on DL.
I've noticed this as well. I've never seen anyone outside of DL protest the usage of that word in the context of movies, television, and art in general. It's an umbrella term that simply means "not hetero", that's it. There's nothing malicious behind it. If you want the playground bullies to define the meaning of the words for you, then that's your problem.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 18, 2018 9:47 PM |
It brought queer people into the lives of people who might not have much interaction with them otherwise, and I’m talking about both the straight guys/families they helped and the straight viewers who maybe knew Will & Jack, but finally got to see really life queer people being normal and cool.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 18, 2018 9:48 PM |
r20 Well said! There was nothing embarrassing about the show or the cast. It was fun and refreshing to see so many straight folks who were totally cool with the gays.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 18, 2018 9:55 PM |
Antoni (food and wine) is the only attractive one. The hairdresser did the Gay Of Thrones webseries.
I might watch it if Antoni gets plenty of airtime.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 18, 2018 10:00 PM |
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was great, because The Gays were Fairy Godmothers making straight people's lives better. It paved the way for straight people seening gay people less of a threat and more of a helpful guide to better their own lives. And for straight men not being afraid to change or ask a gay man for advice.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 18, 2018 10:10 PM |
"Queer" is terribly pretentious. It was appropriated by brain-dead humanities departments to make gay culture seem "edgy" or "transgressive." I roll my eyes whenever I hear it.
As for promoting gay culture and introducing it to "to the masses" when QUEER EYE premiered in 2003 - that's total nonsense. I'm 52 and "the masses" were well aware a gay culture when I was growing up. There were sympathetic portrayals of gays and trans in ALL IN THE FAMILY and THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW I remember seeing as a child in from of the family TV. Revisionist history is easy when you don't know history. Gay culture was well known to the masses as early as the 1950's., albeit in a more guarded, ambivalent form.
Don't be so fucking dramatic.

R24, those were fictional portrayals of queer people; these were real people. They also were the stars of the show, something quite novel at the time. Also, of course gay people/characters have been on TV before, but usually not just to be their cool selves. Never had we been presented as such down to earth, regular people who could totally hang out and be friends with salt of the earth straight people. We weren’t a very special episode in this series- we were the ENTIRE series.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 18, 2018 10:27 PM |
[R28] If you think QUEER EYE represent a portrayal of "real people" there isn't much to talk about.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 18, 2018 10:30 PM |
Not r28 and I apologize if I am too presumptuous, but I believe what r28 meant with real people was larger than life characters on Reality TV. Not playing fictional characters but themselves being fabulous.

Gosh, you certainly must be proud of your witty takedowns, R27. Pity that your snark is exceeded by your ignorance of DL memes. Here’s a thought: how about shutting the fuck up and learning about the DL before assuming you’re qualified to participate?

There’s a moment in the first episode of the new Queer Eye, an update of the groundbreaking makeover show that ran on Bravo from 2003 to 2007, that will feel coolly foreboding to any liberal city slicker.
A long table of gray-haired white men sit at a diner in Kentucky, chatting over coffee and pancakes. It’s a tableau that the political-news media has chosen to embody conservatism, a love of Donald Trump, and a lack of tolerance. Many queer people would approach it with trepidation.
Not so for the five outspoken gay men who star in this eight-episode series from Netflix Inc. Led by the bouncing tresses of hairdresser Jonathan Van Ness, the gang invades the red-hued diner with squeals and claps. There is a pause. Then, the entire table looks up, smiles, and begins to cheer.

Hate on the original show all you want but it was many Americans’ first exposure to completely Out gays in the media, and instead of being child molesting freaks they were fun, clever and fashionable, making other people’s lives better.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 31, 2018 12:25 PM |
I liked the original show because I'm a sucker for makeovers. I loved how Carson would transform the wardrobes and how Thom redid some of their rooms. The other three were kind of "Eh".

For a year or so, I thought the "gay minstrel show" troll had to have been talking about this show.

The food guy's personality seems the most winning, just from those clips in the trailer. I'll give it an episode or two.

Not my thing (I'd rather play video games) but Queer Eye is a net plus, people.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 31, 2018 4:10 PM |
I enjoyed seeing five gay guys be comfortable being themselves and enjoy hanging out together. Thom and Carson were particularly fun to watch.
The makeover stuff never interested me. But I still never missed an episode.....until they introduced women and families into the mix. That was awful.

I miss the old crew already. Well, not Kyan (too bitchy) and Jai (too pointless), but the other three (who were smart).

I never watched the original and don't plan to watch this one.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 7, 2018 3:20 PM |
The first season (or the early episodes) were great fun to watch. This was before the producers and the cast found their "niche" roles and before they landed a contract with Pottery Barn that Thom could access for his -re-decorating.
I loved the episode with a NYC guy named Butch (of all things). he worked as a set builder in NYC and was an artist (and his work was interesting).
The apt renovation was excellent and done on a small budget. i think he lived in a shotgun or railroad apt - Thom re-worked the entrance and rooms, in some ways just organized the man's place.
Carson had two great lines I remember - "Show me on the doll where the bad man touched you" and something such as. "You put a living room where there had been a crack den!"
I don't know what happened to Butch, but the five guys really did brighten his life for a short time. Thank God the internet, nothing ever goes away. Here's the episode...

Just watched the first couple of episodes. First of all, any hairdresser with that hair needs some lessons herself.
And, especially, that hairdresser can only speak in phrases written by a low-end drag queen. "Oh, gurl" "Hi Sister"
How many times did she throw her ridiculous hair around and talking about Beyonce?
We get it. You're very nelly but give it a rest. She's trying to become a "personality" on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 7, 2018 5:03 PM |
Funny watching the old show episodes on YT.
They talk like DLers. "OMG! He looks hot!" etc...
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 7, 2018 5:32 PM |
I tried watching. It's really cringe-worthy and embarassing and also just not entertaining. Also seriously the makeover wasn't even good lol
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 7, 2018 5:35 PM |
The original was way better. In the preview why does the food gay prepare sliced avocado. Can the show not be too stereotypical my goodness. I will pass on this show.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 7, 2018 5:48 PM |
Jonathan (hair queen) needs to turn it way, way down.
I think Antoni (food) has a good personality and is cute, but there's no way I could watch just for him.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 7, 2018 11:01 PM |
It's definitely not lightning in a bottle the way the original guys were, but it's not terrible.
Tan (style), Antoni, and Bobby (design) have the same sweetness that the original had. But the other ones...
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 7, 2018 11:56 PM |
Since it's "Queer 2018", how many Eyes are "Fluid", "Pansexual", or "Trans"?
It really should be one Fluid, one Bi, one Trans, one Supportive Straight Ally, and one lone gay man, who gets out-voted in every episode.
