Unrequited Love Songs

A love lost, a love gone but wanted back.

I choose Reba: One Promise Too Late

What is your selection?

I Can’t Make You Love Me—Bonnie Raitt

by Anonymousreply 2January 18, 2018 8:53 AM

I don't think your understanding of "unrequited" conforms to standard, OP. (There, do I win the prize for the most PC schooling?)

Anyway, Meat Loaf's "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" talks about two different instances of unrequited love.

by Anonymousreply 3January 18, 2018 8:59 AM

R3 you win for grammatical call outs, but lose for lack of a link to your song selection. We'll never listen to it now.

by Anonymousreply 4January 18, 2018 9:06 AM

agree, r3. Does OP think “unrequited” refers to loved and lost? In which case, OP is really looking for “breakup” songs.

For unrequited, see Bonnie Raitt in r2.

Someone to lay down beside me was sung by Karla Bonoff and she also had a song called the letter which is of the same ilk..

This...I haven't listened to this in 40 yrs.....it made me cry

Sorry, r4, I just assumed that everyone born after 1950 had heard "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad", r4. I think it may have been the biggest pop hit of 1977, and the album Bat Out of Hell from which it came the biggest-selling album that year. (And to top it off, Bonnie Tyler released a cover version in 1995.)

Anyway, here's a link -- enjoy!

Yeah, OP doesn't understand the word "unrequited." But, in fairness, that country clown Reba probably doesn't either.

This song is about unrequited love. Joni Mitchell wrote it based on an older gay man's obsessions with seeing a younger man.

Here's another song about two different instances of unrequited love that was a huge hit in Europe.

It's by the deliciously cheesy British group Smokie.

karla bonoff did write someone to lay down beside me, indeed, but NO ONE EVER sang it like Linda. She had the most amazing voice...

There's somebody waiting alone in the street For someone to walk up and greet

Here you are all alone in the city Where's the love that you took to your side

Lonely faces will stare through your eyes in the night

And they'll say

Woman sweet woman Please come home with me

You're shining and willing and free But your love is a common occurrence

Not like love that I feel in my heart Still you know that may be what I need

Is someone to lay down beside me

And even though it's not real

Just someone to lay down beside me You're the story of my life

Someone to lay down beside me And even though it's not real

Just someone to lay down beside me You're the story of my life

The morning is breaking

The street lights are off

The sun will soon share all the cost

Of a world that can be sort of heartless

Not like love that I feel in my heart

Still you know that may be all you'll get

Is someone to lay down beside you

And even though it's not real

Just someone to lay down beside you

You just can't ask for more

I attended a beautiful tribute concert in Montreal on the anniversary of Leonard Cohen's death in November. There were many great performances from Sting, Elvis Costello, kd Lang, Courtney Love, Damien Rice and this.....

Lana Del Rey and Leonard Cohen's son Adam sang a cold and pretty duet on Chelsea Hotel #2. The song is really about Cohen fucking Janis Joplin and not giving a fuck about her. I can't get it out of my head.
