For more than 135 years, people have reported strange lights above the horizon in Marfa, Texas. No-one knows exactly what they are, and that’s what makes them so captivating.

Brown Mountain in western North Carolina is known for its similar ghost lights. The usual explanation is refracted automobile lights but contrary to the Wikipedia article, local accounts go back to the 19th century or even earlier, before cars had been invented or trains had come to the area (I grew up in the nearby).
