Russians fear that animal cruelty laws will lead to gay rights
A Russian Senator has warned that a bill outlawing cruelty to dogs is a ‘slippery slope’ to LGBT rights.
The bizarre claim comes from Communist Party Senator Sergei Kalashnikov after proposals were tabled to introduce some animal rights legislation.
Russia has some of the weakest legal protections for animals in the world, and both wild and domestic animals can be subjected to extreme cruelty.
But as the bill came forward to limit cruel treatment in the training of hunting dogs, Kalashnikov warned that it could lead to rights for a different oppressed minority.
According to the Moscow Times, he said: [bold]“We treat many western fads with humor, including political correctness, the rights of sexual minorities and others.[/bold]
“But any thought, however humanitarian, becomes absurd when carried to its logical conclusion.
[bold]“We’re not only passing a law that won’t work for many reasons, but we’re also demonstrating that we’re following the same path, so to speak, of defending the rights of sexual minorities.”[/bold]
The bill was eventually rejected, but only after Stepan Zhiryakov, the vice-chairman of the Agrarian Committee, clarified that dogs “should not be equated to sexual minorities.”
It is unclear what connection there is between banning cruelty against animals and LGBT rights legislation, aside from that of basic human decency. (MORE at link)

Why am I not surprised that Russia has a high rate of animal cruelty?

Russians were rounding up stray dogs and poisoning them leading up to the Sochi Olympics. So this is no surprise.

There must be a shared psychopathy in the genes of Russians. They all seem either horrible, cold and evil or depressed drunkards and druggies.

I was reading "Crime and Punishment" in high school and when the drunken peasant beats his horse to death while all the onlookers laugh it made me so sick that I closed the book and never opened it again.
So this story doesn't surprise me because nothing has changed.

Bitch got a gender-neutral pronoun for a surname. IT shouldn't be saying shit about sexual minorities. OR animals.

The implication, r12, is that gay people are not really human. Along with animals, women, kids, the disabled, people who speak different languages, etc., therefore not worth rghts.
It wasn't so long ago the same mindset prevailed here. Russia, of course, is very backward in its thinking.

There's a reason why the Nazis fled in terror when they heard the Russians were on their tail at the end of the war. They knew they were more barbaric than even they were.

It's an awful story. However, I wonder how Russia might spin stories about the USA, such as the undercover footage of appalling animal abuse in factories, pigeon shoots in PA, canned hunts in Texas (where Scalia said adios), dog fighting (Hiya, Mike!), etc.

Are there any DL scholars who can explain why Russian culture is the way it is? Is it genetic? Is it historical? What factors produced people who behave like this? I don't even trust the expats I've met. I feel like they are up to no good all the time.

Animal torture is a precursor to serial killing. I say save the animals, but let the little psychos start offing each other. A win-win for the rest of the world. They can start frying each other up and eating each other too. They like doing that.

R29 It’s very complicated to explain but ultimately it does go back to Communism. Russians were bred to be like working ants. They had so many cultural things blocked other countries (even perceived repressed ones) had access to. Even if Russia was fully Westernised now, it would take several generations to dissolve the ingrained mindset. Think of it from their perspective. Imagine if 20 years ago Westerners were told we had to behave in certain ways under law, not be individuals and not have full control over our life path. You know full well that 20 years on most of us (older ones) would be rebelling, as we had been bred and raised in a different world. It would be the younger people who would be conforming, but even here the influence of the older generations would still imprint on them to some degree.
Russia is similar to the above. You cannot effectively enslave people under communist rule for generations and not see the behaviour born of that everywhere decades later.
All these factors are why Communism has terrified Western Countries for many decades. Because in order for it to work, peoples mindsets have to be reduced to a set of permitted norms. Human nature can become incredibly cruel if it’s permitted to be by a norm.

Hatred of homosexuality has been part of Communist ideology since the very beginning, from Stalin to Castro, so it's no surprise that this politician is batting for that team.

You know the old adage about how children who kill animals grow up to kill people?
Dostoevsky knew. In THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV he wrote of gross little Smerdyakov being caught ceremonially killing cats and holding elaborate funerals, complete with incense and hymns. The servants found out and kicked his ass.
