Who would make the best replacement for Matt Lauer on the "Today" show?
Who do you think should take Matt's place?
|by Anonymous||reply 174||Last Monday at 6:27 PM|
I vote for a drunk Hoda Kotb
|by Anonymous||reply 1||12/04/2017|
Obviously Geist but it would be an interesting PR "feel good" move to bring Ann Curry back.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||12/04/2017|
Why is everyone forgetting that they hated Ann Curry?
She could not do the job. She could not read the teleprompter. She would turn the most basic live interview into a cringefest with non-sequiturs and inappropriate melodramatics. She couldn't ad lib to save her life. Watching her was anxiety inducing — how is she going to make me wince next?
The show dropped from first to second place as soon as she took over, which cost NBC a shit-ton of money. Yet they were supposed to keep her in the position why?

Not a woman
|by Anonymous||reply 5||12/04/2017|
Billy Bush (he needs a job).
|by Anonymous||reply 6||12/05/2017|
Yes Wendy at r5, we know.

|by Anonymous||reply 10||12/05/2017|
I second R10 's suggestion of Tamron Hall. They gave her a lot of fluff pieces, but she is capable of so much more. For instance, watch her interview with wannabe Trump surrogate Scott Baio. He came in expecting softballs, but she was unrelenting in her questions about the meaning behind his dumb tweets. Why does Lauer's replacement have to be a man?
|by Anonymous||reply 11||12/05/2017|
I forgot about Tamron Hall, yes she'd be great except r5 and Wendy Williams won't approve.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||12/05/2017|
I think Craig Melvin is hot but he does not come off as terribly bright so he'll probably get it.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||12/05/2017|
Though he would be more than capable, I agree with those who say Willie Geist would be a completely boring choice, which is why I think NBC probably won't go in that direction unless all other options just don't pan out.
I think choosing Megyn Kelly would turn too many people off; no matter how hard NBC tries to push her down our throats, she's just not well-liked.
Carson Daly is simply not qualified. The Today show is not TRL. And saying this is in no way an endorsement of the idea that Matt Lauer was some great journalist because he wasn't, but he had grown into the job over a period of 20 years.
I'm sure NBC would kill for Anderson Cooper but they know CNN would never let him go, so that won't happen.
I, too, like Tamron Hall but I doubt they bring her back.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||12/05/2017|
NBC will wanna keep this momentum going and won't wanna rock the boat with an outsider. It'll be Hoda until the Winter Olympics then Willie takes over.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||12/05/2017|
Harry Smith, NBC is paying him a salary for which he is not doing anything at the moment
|by Anonymous||reply 16||12/05/2017|
Of course it will be Willie Geist.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||12/05/2017|
Harry Smith would certainly be an outstanding and serious choice but I would think NBC would want to install someone younger in Lauer's position. But Smith would be excellent.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||12/05/2017|
Hoda is great. Replace Savanna with Kathy Lee, obviously.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||12/05/2017|
Tamron may not want to come back. She did leave on her own. There must have been a reason. They did try to get her to stay.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||12/05/2017|
[quote] Harry Smith would certainly be an outstanding and serious choice but I would think NBC would want to install someone younger in Lauer's position. But Smith would be excellent.
By putting Harry Smith in they would have stability, then hire a younger newsman to do the news segments and that guy can be back-up to Smith until he retires
|by Anonymous||reply 21||12/05/2017|
Charlie Rose should replace Matt on Today and Matt Lauer should replace Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||12/05/2017|
Barack and Michelle Obama, think how much that would piss off Trump.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||12/05/2017|

Melitha Harrith Perry
|by Anonymous||reply 25||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 26||12/05/2017|
I never liked Savanah, she's too "corporate".
Hoda's success baffles me. She seems awkward and giggly, like a frau makeover winner. I guess she's the only one who could get along with Kathie Lee.
Poeple are programmed to want a man in charge, sort of a seasoned voice of reason.
Willie, Anderson, Carson are all beta- not alpha..
|by Anonymous||reply 27||12/05/2017|
Rachel Maddow would be a breath of fresh air. Young, smart unlike those re-treads currently on the show.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 29||12/05/2017|
Don Lemon: he's getting better all the time.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||12/05/2017|
Rachel is too hard hitting for morning TV. Same with Megyn Kelly.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||12/05/2017|
Kathy or Rosie
|by Anonymous||reply 32||12/05/2017|
Get a good funny smart drag queen on. Liven up this frau fest.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||12/05/2017|
Lee Cowan, a CBS Sunday Morning correspondent is a very professional and charismatic journalist. He's highly under-utilized by CBS'L. unless that's the way he wants it.
He is just fascinating to watch and has such an ease and confidence in front of the camera. But he'd never want the NBC job.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||12/05/2017|
Why not me, bitches?
|by Anonymous||reply 35||12/05/2017|
"Bud, are you watching TV?"
|by Anonymous||reply 36||12/05/2017|
Kellyanne - You have a face for radio. AM Radio.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||12/05/2017|
Other than his five obsessed fans who post here, no one is tuning in to see Willie Geist's nerdy and homely looking ass.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||12/05/2017|
A Native American.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||12/05/2017|
Gio Benitez. ABC shouldn't have all the gay reporters. They can afford to lose one...
|by Anonymous||reply 40||12/05/2017|
Who are the other ones, R40?
|by Anonymous||reply 41||12/05/2017|
Lester Holt's son.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 43||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 44||12/05/2017|
Ryan Secrest would kick Kelly to death to get it.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 46||12/05/2017|
[quote] But he'd never want the NBC job.
I don't know about that. Cowan wanted the CBS Sunday Morning job, which went eventually to Jane Pauley. He and his wife did have a baby recently, though, so you may be right.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 48||12/05/2017|
Neither Willie Geist nor Carson Daly seem to have the kind of balance a show like this needs. Geist is on his way to it, but needs a little more experience. He's also, to be honest, a bit on the homely side.
Brian Williams is fine where he is, but I doubt NBC would allow him the anchor seat. Replacing Lauer with Williams would lead to an outcry.
It has to be someone not too young, not too old, who is both jovial but also can do hard news, as the TODAY show did so well after 9/11.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||12/05/2017|
Probably Lester Holt or Willie Geist. It won't be someone outside the box.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||12/05/2017|
There is something weird-looking about Carson Daly.
Isn't Lester Holt doing the evening news? He seems better suited for that than this entertainment show.
Where is Ann Curry? Is she banished somewhere? Locked in someone's basement?
|by Anonymous||reply 51||12/05/2017|
Willie Geist looks weird, too.
Do they have anyone who seems normal, like Harry Smith? Someone a bit sophisticated would be nice.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 53||12/05/2017|
Matt Lauer’s intense jealousy left NBC without a Plan B
|by Anonymous||reply 54||12/05/2017|
“Matt killed off, in their infancy, every man who could succeed him at the time that he was ready to hang it up — so there’s nobody to take his place. And now NBC is paying the price.”
|by Anonymous||reply 55||12/05/2017|
Tamron Hall and Jeff Glor. Redistribute ole Savannah
|by Anonymous||reply 56||12/05/2017|
Hire Jane Pauley from CBS, and have her paired with a piece of ass thirtysomething guy. Not a sports guy, no douche bros.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||12/05/2017|
Kasie Hunt's brother Mike.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||12/05/2017|
R56 Jeff Glor replaced Scott Pelley as evening news anchor. Unlikely he would take a step down to do TODAY.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||12/05/2017|
[QUOTE]Geist is on his way to it, but needs a little more experience. He's also, to be honest, a bit on the homely side.
How much experience does he need? He's co-hosted for years and he does Morning Joe. The problem is he is a supporting player. He doesn't have the looks or personality to be the leading star.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||12/05/2017|
I bet Willie’s got a big dick.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 62||12/05/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 63||12/05/2017|
R60 - Stephanopoulos, Lauer, and Rose do have the looks and personality for the big chair and Geist doesn't? Those were/ are some ugly morning co-hosts. Come on Charlie Rose couldn't even sit up right and wears Depends, George is 4 feet, and Matt had such an ass hole vibe to him; not to mention a bald head that he looked like a bowling pin. It's not a difficult task. And u don't have to look distinguishably good looking.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||12/05/2017|
What about Chris Hayes? I know he has his nightly show on MSNBC but think he could embody everything they'd be looking for: cute enough for the fraus, personable, could definitely handle the hard-hitting news and interviews with newsmakers, and would also be good with the lighter stuff like cooking segments and introducing concerts on the plaza. Only thing is, I'd definitely hate to lose him in primetime where I think he does great work on his own show.
I think Ari Melber would also be an excellent choice for all the same reasons.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||12/05/2017|
I read something about Tamron ramping up for her own show, apart from NBC. Don't know which network. I think she's done with NBC.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||12/05/2017|
Ali Velshi and Stephanie Ruhle.
I’m sure it won’t happen, but I’d love it if it did. Their MSNBC show is always worth watching.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||12/05/2017|
No one. Cancel the show.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||12/05/2017|
Rachel, Chris. Lawrence and Jou should taken over the network.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||12/05/2017|
He was always fun when he co hosted with Kelly ripa on her show
|by Anonymous||reply 70||12/05/2017|
Agree with r62. Nicolle Wallace could sort those ratings out for The Today Show and bring some badly-needed spark and life.
With Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kohb - it's the sorority girls every day. Hoda especially with her constant fawning over her hair, preening and big fake smile is insufferable. She looks like a New York manicurist from New Jersey who wandered onto the set every day.
|by Anonymous||reply 71||12/05/2017|
[quote] Hoda especially with her constant fawning over her hair, preening and big fake smile is insufferable.
The thing is I like Hoda but I really believe she works perfectly with Kathie Lee and probably only with Kathie Lee.
She's fine to put on other shows when no one else is there but I'm not sure she'd be the best fit.
While I like Nicole Wallace I don't know if I'd like Nicole and Savannah as hosts.

A castrated, every-smiling Kevin Spacey, of course!

Matt when he was hired. He had the looks and personality Geist doesn't.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||12/06/2017|
There was an episode of "Friends" where the girls all thought Stephanopolos was dreamy.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||12/06/2017|
Willie is cute and he'll get it. Please no Craig Melvin.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||12/06/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 79||12/06/2017|
Don Lemon would be an excellent choice.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||12/06/2017|
Anderson Cooper would obivously be the best contender (he can cover both fluff and serious topics equally well), but as that article in OP's link pointed out, there is no way CNN would let him do it.

|by Anonymous||reply 89||12/06/2017|
Funny, R88. I guess that wasn't on film or televised...Sounds like they all knew about each other...
|by Anonymous||reply 90||12/06/2017|
Megyn Kelly would be the final nail in NBC's coffin.
|by Anonymous||reply 91||12/06/2017|
Ari Melber would be a fabulous pick.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||12/06/2017|

|by Anonymous||reply 93||12/06/2017|
Larry King and Regis Philbin should co-host.

[quote] Anderson Cooper would obivously be the best contender (he can cover both fluff and serious topics equally well), but as that article in OP's link pointed out, there is no way CNN would let him do it.
Anderson would need to leave CNN to do it - there's no way he could do both a daytime news program and 360. Plus he'd have to leave his slot at CBS.
|by Anonymous||reply 96||12/06/2017|
How about the husband of Thomas Roberts of MSNBC?

Geist does not have the young Matt Lauer's looks, Stephanolous' high profile Washington experience or Rose's 50 yrs of broadcast journalism experience. What he does brings to the table is not unique and can certainly be found in many many much more attractive, interesting and charismatic people.
|by Anonymous||reply 111||12/06/2017|
Isn't there anyone at the local level that can step up?
Any studs at the LA/Chicago/NYC stations? One of them needs to pull an Eve fucking Harrington and befriend Willie "Fug" Geist.
|by Anonymous||reply 112||12/06/2017|
Anderson already tried and failed at daytime r81. Even when they brought in cohosts to try to save his show, he was still super boring. He has other strengths, but news-talk is not it.
Don Lemon is way more engaging.

|by Anonymous||reply 119||12/06/2017|
Please, oh, please, do not let it be Lester Holt. As the 'moderator' during the Hil' and Trump election debates, he'd 'mysteriously vanished' during them.
They NYT's had posted, shortly after his 'mysteriously vanishing,' he was nearly captured along side the express way; but he'd managed to escape this effort as well.
|by Anonymous||reply 120||12/06/2017|
Do people not understand the power structures on TV?
It's beyond stupid for any of you to suggest that an existing nightly news anchor (Holt, Jeff Glor) would TAKE A STEP DOWN to come to a morning show.
|by Anonymous||reply 121||12/07/2017|
Lots of hot guys at MSNBC - Ken Dilanian and Eli Stokols are so hot. I'd also want them to consider Kier Smith who reports from England. Craig Melvin comes across a blowhard -a hot blowhard and I can't see him working well with any co-host,.
|by Anonymous||reply 122||12/07/2017|

|by Anonymous||reply 125||12/07/2017|
People who watch daytime TV are losers.
|by Anonymous||reply 126||12/07/2017|
Ronan was so blah on MSNBC, though. I don't doubt that he's a decent reporter and writer, but doing that kind of work and writing is different that being a chatterbox on live TV.

Wendy Williams said on her show this morning that she's hearing it will be Craig Melvin.
That's fine and all, but I really think the perfect choice would be Ari Melber. Ari is a lawyer (like Savannah), knows politics, could credibly interview world leaders, and of course he's fucking gorgeous (in my opinion hotter than Matt ever was). The only possible downside is I'm not sure how well he would do with frivolous shit like dressing up for Halloween and introducing boy bands on the plaza, but I'm sure he could get around that.

My choice would be TJ Holmes, late of CNN, BET, ABC, and MSNBC. He's a great studio host, and he is GORGEOUS--with a voice to match. Seems the networks have never figured out how to use him properly. I did like his show on CNN, and was impressed by his handling of the Virginia Tech mass shooting, which happened during his shift.

- After her vile rant about Lauer at the Top Secret Roast.
