What's the Wikipedia Strong-Arming Us for Money?

Well?

by Anonymousreply 28Last Wednesday at 7:04 PM

Saw that as well. BK?

by Anonymousreply 112/04/2017

It's a diabolical business model: "YOU volunteer all the work, YOU give us the money to run it! And WE get to act high-minded about it, as though we're providing a public service!"

by Anonymousreply 212/04/2017

I gave them $3. You guys don't realize in the old days we used to have to buy volumns of encyclopedia britannica. Wikipedia is an imperfect site but they have been a great space saver.

by Anonymousreply 312/04/2017

You can buy an online subscription to Encyc. Brit., and have been able to do so since the 1990s. And lots of their content is free.

by Anonymousreply 412/04/2017

They do this every so often.

I'm not giving them a penny until they put out of control admins in their place.

by Anonymousreply 512/04/2017

Oh dear

by Anonymousreply 6Last Wednesday at 11:47 AM

It's just like PBS pledge drives. The site is free to us users but Wikimedia still has to pay to maintain it and host it.

by Anonymousreply 7Last Wednesday at 11:50 AM

They don’t run ads. How are they supposed to pay for it otherwise?

Go ahead and claim you never use Wikipedia.

by Anonymousreply 8Last Wednesday at 11:55 AM

R7 Wouldn't be so bad if they earnt the money. I also doubt the money just covers expenses of running the site. Greedy pigs

R8 You can turn down the self righteousness dear.

by Anonymousreply 9Last Wednesday at 11:56 AM

I don't have a problem with donating to wikipedia. I use them all the time.

You bitches are cheap.

by Anonymousreply 10Last Wednesday at 12:00 PM

Because we're freeloaders. And we are, Blanche, we are.

by Anonymousreply 11Last Wednesday at 12:01 PM

I'd rather pay for Wikipedia than porn.

by Anonymousreply 12Last Wednesday at 12:26 PM

Or go to the library for free.

by Anonymousreply 13Last Wednesday at 12:36 PM

Where's the strong-arming? All you have to do is scroll right past or x out the request.

Are you triggered by those Salvation Army Santas too, OP?

by Anonymousreply 14Last Wednesday at 12:40 PM

You don't seem to realize that Wikipedia pays for the servers and the bandwidth used. The bills must be astronomical.

And what is this about "earning the money"? Tens of millions use Wikipedia daily to find information. Wikipedia most certainly has earned the right to ask for financial support. And like R14 said no one is forcing you to do anything, and it's the easiest thing to just bypass the plea for the money. You're totally free to not use Wikipedia as well so stop being a cunty troll.

by Anonymousreply 15Last Wednesday at 12:55 PM

What's the OP shitty grammar well?

by Anonymousreply 16Last Wednesday at 1:01 PM

Wikipedia is a bunch of horseshit, run by an army of editors and administrators who impose their own views on the content in their own little fifedoms. It's not worth supporting.

by Anonymousreply 17Last Wednesday at 1:17 PM

fiefdoms

by Anonymousreply 18Last Wednesday at 3:31 PM

They're drumming up support for their fifedoms.

by Anonymousreply 19Last Wednesday at 3:40 PM

I love women.

by Anonymousreply 20Last Wednesday at 3:43 PM

Kevin, is that you at R20?

by Anonymousreply 21Last Wednesday at 3:49 PM

I donated $5. I use Wikipedia fairly often.

by Anonymousreply 22Last Wednesday at 4:40 PM

Would you want somebody to buy wikipedia? It’s not free to host and maintain a website that gets billions of visits a year.

by Anonymousreply 23Last Wednesday at 4:52 PM

What’s a library?

by Anonymousreply 24Last Wednesday at 5:09 PM

R19 for the win!

by Anonymousreply 25Last Wednesday at 5:44 PM

Is the info accurate?

by Anonymousreply 26Last Wednesday at 5:50 PM

For some reason Wikipedia attracts BPD and ASD sufferers like moths to a flame. The editors get into vicious battles which they imagine have world-historic repercussions, when it's basically a glorified Yahoo answers.

by Anonymousreply 27Last Wednesday at 6:02 PM

I know for a fact that Yahoo never has the answers. Now that's a useless site.
