R7: I was reading other parts of the thread. Mainly the parts about Angela Lansbury, especially when one considers the timing of her public statement about women's clothes and the death of the man who enabled LucyMAME. Whether you agree with her or not, is this what we have come to as a society? Making a pariah out of Angela Lansbury, of all people. I never heard of any right-wing sympathies on her part.

No one sane likes that horrifically annoying shit, R15. The same year it came out, the sugar industry launched a propaganda campaign similar to the one the tobacco industry. That movie helped enable the obesity epidemic.

Think of all the time Walt could have been spending on EPCOT instead. One of its goals was to help prevent poverty before it starts. Look at the areas in Anaheim outside of Disneyland; it's as far from The Happiest Place on Earth as you can get. Disney today has fallen far short of that ideal.

One of the guys rumored to be a big part of the alleged times piece is posting on social media like nothing is wrong whatsoever. I would assume the times would have reached out to him for comment on the allegations, so that says to me that piece isn’t running, OR one of the rumored men is not involved.

I don’t think he’d be posting the way he is if his life is going to be ruined in mere hours.

That iconic yellow beaded pants ensemble that introduces us to Mame in It's Today! really saw a a lot of transformations over the years the show ran on Broadway and on tour.

Most interesting fact is it was a sleeveless camisole when Lansbury (who was no spring chicken) wore it at the premiere. I'm not so sure it didn't have sleeves added before she left the show but it was certainly sleeved for every Mame afterwards. The legs of the pants also became progressively wider (Janet Blair on tour) or narrower (Ann Miller) at the closing.

And then Celeste Holm wouldn't wear yellow. She insisted on pink, which wasn't necessarily a tragedy except the entire ensemble was dressed in golds, silvers, greys and blacks to key off of Mame's yellow sequins and beads.

THANK YOU r23!!! I once told a bitchy theater queen that Stritch had played Vera and he didn't believe me. I could never find the proof for it though. Now I've got it and I'm going to hunt that bitchy queen down and rub his nose in that picture.

I had heard that in some summer stock production that Stritch and another actress (sorry can't remember who) had done Mame and each of them traded roles night after night. So one night Stritch played Vera, then the next night Mame. But I haven't been able to find absolute proof that that is true.

Stritch didn’t switch roles. Her story was she wanted to do Mame with Judy Garland and they would switch roles based upon who drank the least that day. (The more sober one would play Mame, the more drunk one would play Vera.)

Did Ann Sothern ever play Mame? There were a number of elegant ladies who really could pull Mame off back then. Nowadays, it's much harder to cast than Jerry Herman's other principal lady, Dolly, who can be played by nearly every type.

All of the Broadway Dollys and original tour Dollys wore more or less the same red gown for the title number. But Ethel Merman was the only one who wore NO diamond choker - her throat was bare. Pearl Bailey wore a diamond necklace, not a choker.

Scuttlebutt the NYT article will actually be the first in a series, they found so much about so many, and first installment will highlight a former chorus member who has risen to the rank of director-choreographer. Also another choreographer (who has directing credits) and that person's assistant.

There are certainly other directors, choreographers and casting directors who could be on the list. I was trying to list all the stories I've heard through the years from my actor friends, especially the good looking ones, straight and gay, men and women.

Let's face it, there's only so many directors and choreographers working today and absolutely none of them is as famous (or offers the isn't it shocking factor) as a TV star or a politician. Producers will be publicly appalled, but I doubt anyone, especially those who aren't working in movies or TV, is going to be blacklisted.

It sounds like the Times piece will feature Jerry Mitchell, whom everyone likes, and Sergio Trujillo, who nobody likes.

I have seen them around town for 30 years, and Jerry has always been very friendly. I kissed Sergio a few times in the early 90s, just flirting on the dance floor. He has a reputation of being abusive to his casts, things like calling them fat. His long-time boyfriend Jack Noseworthy doesn't seem to have people ever saying warm things about him either. I have always gotten the feeling Jack isn't interested in people... other than Jack.

I enjoyed the original Once on This Island but I was ready for it to be over by the time it finally ended. I've never understood why they cut Come Down from the Tree, preserved on one of Bruce Kimmel's Lost in Boston albums and other recordings. It's far superior to anything else in the score.

I saw the original production of Once On This Island. It was very good because they didn't clutter the stage with a lot of junk. It was more imaginative using things like blue cloth to represent the sea. From what I saw on Macy's parade, this production looks cluttered.

Nettie Fowler in Carousel is a difficult role to play because the character is not well written, but she gets the 11:00 number. It's also difficult because the character is supposed to be energetic, happy go lucky and spunky, but then she sings this operatic airy-fairy power ballad. So the actress has to change gears from being the life of the party to being the mother figure. It's not an easy role for a non-actress. I wish I had been able to see Patricia Routledge play it in London. Shirley Verritt left a lot to be desired at Lincoln Center.

I saw the original Three Tall Women off-Broadway. It needs really strong acting because it's a very talky play. Not really a plot or any action, a lot of talk.

I haven’t thought about him in years but I went to college with Matt Cavenaugh. No real insight to offer into him though other than that he’s legitimately straight although guys were constantly falling in love with him.

I saw the West End production of Three Tall Women with Maggie Smith. The actor who plays the son doesn’t have any lines and just looked awkward and embarrassed at the curtain call. Smith was very good indeed.

I saw Three Tall Women in 1995 or 96 (can't remember). Myra Carter had left, so Marian Seldes moved into her role. Joan Van Ark had taken over for Seldes and Jordan Baker was (still?) playing the young woman. I thought it was an incredible show and all three women were terrific.

Mitchell can be a bitch. I worked on the crew of a really bad Sarah Michelle Gellar movie and he choreographed something on it. He was so bitchy to the teamster driving us home (BIG mistake) that the teamster refused to take him to his place as scheduled and he had to get out with the rest of us at the first drop off.

A few months ago, I was watching an LGBT style "The View" on YT. The lez/bi host recounted how she had covered a convention about same sex relationships in genre TV. Right. And neither is "You'll Never Walk Alone." If you look at what the whole idea of "11 O'clock number" is, it doesn't fit, neither for its location in the show nor for its purpose/content. The reprise at the end of the show is the finale. "Carousel," as with many other musicals, doesn't have an "11 O'Clock Number."

R209 and others who have suggested the Times is holding the piece to give more breathing room to the Levine story, that's not how journalism works. When a story is as explosive as this one's rumored to be, you run it ASAP or else risk being scooped by a competitor. (Buzzfeed seems to be working on its own Broadway-centric sexual misconduct story, for example.) The only reason the Times wouldn't have run the story yet is either there are moving parts that need to be locked down first (like vetting a key source, dealing with legal challenges, etc) or the story was never real to begin with, and that latter option seems unlikely.

I have no special knowledge of what's happening inside the Times, but as a working journalist at a national news organization, I can tell you that legal issues are almost always what hold up a piece of this magnitude at this late stage of the game. Hearing Friday that the story had been bumped just confirmed that for me.

Now, the caveats are that maybe the story isn't actually as far along as the rumors suggested and, as I said before, maybe the story was never real to begin with. But assuming there's actually a story nearing publication and assuming it's scandalous, legal trouble is almost certainly to blame.

Given that, I wasn't even expecting the story to land today because I know these things can involve lots of tense calls and meetings up and down the chain of command in the newsroom. It's within the realm of possibility, even, that it could be several days before we see anything.

But again, if the rumors have basically been accurate about the story's existence, content and stage of completion, then there's no way you won't see something. At worst, Legal will get names removed and juicy stuff toned down—i.e. neutered—but a place like the Times won't sink what I'd bet have been considerable resources into reporting a story like this and not print anything.

Some thoughts about the Times article. A lot of people who are careful about their social media are talking about it or speculating which makes me feel it is definitely something that is being worked on.

I'm curious about the Jerry Mitchell angle. A lot of the Bares people and the chorus boys I know are into orgies and group sex. When they do Bares events on Fire Island they all stay with Mitchell and his husband/partner, and it's been observed that they're all fucking each other. So what I wonder is where the line was supposedly crossed. Is it not really consensual? Was he dumb enough to say out loud "if you don't fuck around with us we won't cast you?" And do they even care?

I'm also curious what if any effect this would have on the box office for these creatives, if any. Are people seeing the Cyndi Lauper show or the Jerry Mitchell show? My guess would be the former.

Lastly I think it's interesting that this is coming from the NYT. Those boys are all fucking whores.

Another former journalist here... Legal holds up everything for these kinds of stories at the major legit organizations. When you're reporting news that can ruin lives and careers, it's key to be correct and on the up and up.

As for Sergio... His manager is one of the biggest byotches I've ever encountered.

Jerry's actually pretty damn cool for the most part. Sexually voracious, yes, but not an asshole.

Switching gears completely, I taped HOLIDAY INN and have been watching it in 30-minute increments. I've only finished the first hour and cannot believe this was presented on Broadway, much less preserved and televised. It's jovial, banal dogshit. Is there any reason I need to watch anymore? I heard there were some great dance numbers. Maybe I'll just fast forward to those. I liked the rope-jumping number, but it's hardly compensation for the crap that preceded it. Horrible acting, ghastly writing. Ugh.

For those of you who work in journalism, how do papers like The National Enquirer get away with some of the stuff they write? Obviously they have been sued a few times. But do they have honest sources with the information and just run with stories hoping that famous people won't bother or when the famous person's lawyer calls, does TNE say, "Our source is his mother and she said it was true".

I used to have a DVD of a documentary called THE AUDITION (2008) which I LOVED (even though I'm not a real opera follower.) It's about 12 singers going through the week-long Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She's one of the competitors, and at the end you hear various opera professionals debating which 6 should win.

This one guy asks if they should choose who they think have the best voices, technically, or temper that with what they think someone's carrer will be....because they think there's no way in hell Meade will be hired for much, due to her VERY large size.

I'm always so happy when she pops up in the news or in discussion, because that discussion made me think it was such a close call for her! And, she seems like a nice person. (I'm not in a position to judge her voice.)

Casting directors are redundant and most have NO place in judging talent as most of them are failed actors to begin with. I said “legally” released for home audiences. A few years back, a friend of mine obtained a bootleg copy, and oh boy, did we watch it. Is it good? It’s a show that sets real crimes to real terrible acting and music. How was a miscalculation this deeply, deeply wrong brought to air? I guess it was the ‘90s. It was a simpler time.

I was around when Cop Rock was first broadcast. It was definitely a WTF? moment. I think it was trying to capture the audience who watched MTV. But it was so god-awful. It might have worked if they had chosen a subject other than police and crimes. And even without the songs the writing of the script (book?) was bad. I think the only successful shows that have integrated music into the show were Fame and Glee, and of course both of those had logical musical progressions, not just people bursting out singing for no reason. Pushing Daisies had a bit more luck with integrating songs into their show without the characters being performers, but of course, they didn't do it in every episode.

Saw a rebroadcast of the National Theatre's Follies last night. I have minor quibbles, but, really, I can't imagine a much better production of a show so difficult to cast and produce well (and on the Olivier's enormous stage, too). I got a bit misty at Broadway Baby and One More Kiss, which has never happened to me before. Kudos to the National for spending money on a real orchestra. Other kudos to the sound designer or whoever is in charge of the body mics. I did not see one of those damn forehead gumdrops or a wire down the back of a neck -- both of which always take me out of a show -- until Live, Laugh, Love. I don't know where they hid them, but well done, you.

The showing was in Berkeley and easily 80% of the audience was AARP members. Nothing wrong with that, certainly, but where were all the young theater gaylings? I was one once, and I'd go see any classic play or musical to learn from them. UCBerkeley has a dramatic arts department; where were those students? What are the theater kids seeing now? Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton? I am... concerned.

OK, a couple of the quibbles, "a cornucopia of imperfections," if you will (a bit spoilerish, so maybe stop here if you're planning to see it): The Solange could not handle both the French accent and the tricky lyrics to Ah, Paree! and mush-mouthed most of it. Where were the hand mirrors in Who's That Woman? (I also missed some of the women flubbing the steps at the beginning of that number; only Carlotta did that I saw. Sure, they all perfectly remembered a complicated tap routine 30 years on.) I had to wonder why Young Phyllis was also in Lucy/Jessie. A couple of numbers needed a bit more American pizzazz, mainly You're Going To Love Tomorrow, which seemed a bit tentative (never mind Young Sally's hilarious attempt at "cornucopia"), and Buddy's Blues. Loveland wasn't as under-produced as I'd been led to believe, but that transition should be breathtaking (interesting that the showgirls' patter was reworked for Roscoe, which I guess comes from the original London production).

Alexandra Socha is half of the cast, and I found her so damn irritating. I think that's more the fault of the script than the actor, but wasn't she let go from FUN HOME?

As for ACTUALLY, I can't quite believe we're supposed to be torn between the guy and the gal. I wasn't torn at all. It seemed clear as can be to me, especially given the comparison of what was at stake for each of them. Ugh.

I've only seen the broadcast once but my recollection of Tomorrow/Through is that Young Phyllis wasn't fully on it vocally. I'm not sure if the choreography she had to execute was too busy or something and it affected her singing. I do recall feeling some of the business distracted from the lyrics, like having Young go to iron a shirt at the point where she sings "leave a light on the porch for me".

I thought the approach to Buddy's Blues was smarter than the 2011 Broadway. They knew they didn't have Gene Nelson in London, whereas the 2011 had poor Mr Luker doing fierce little leaps like something Lola Heatherton's Boys would do.

i sort of zoned out of the Mirror number when the young dancers took over. The whole point of the number is that the old gals are still doing it. They shouldn't cede the stage to their ghosts.

I wondered if Young Phyllis was there as insurance in case the audience might miss the Lucy/Jessie distinction, misapplying it as Sally/Phyllis etc.

I should add that I liked the Whitmans, especially Emily, who was like one of those wonderful alternately daffy and steely turns you often see in British sitcoms (like Our Rose in Keeping Up Appearances). The Whitmans can often be boring and twee. I couldn't even remark on anything the Emily did, they were just there, present and characterful - a perfect example of being rather than doing a load of acting or pulling focus. I was sorry that they didn't get applause as their number transitioned into Ah, Paris.

I'm convinced that the reputation of the Levine Adriana rests largely on the fact that it was the first studio recording to come along in many years. The last one before it was Capuana's, with Tebaldi at her worst. That was pitchy, dawg. Flat, flat, flat.

I thought it was hilarious how young Sally nyuk-nyukked her way out of not just "warn you"/"cornu" (copia) but also that infamous "soul-stirring"/"bolstering". She made the rhymes work! The sound mix on that number was awful, though; you couldn't hear the counterpoint clearly, especially near the end.

Imelda Staunton's Sally reminded me of Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine. You start out so high-strung and intense, you have nowhere to go. Her Losing My Mind, so well done, could have been devastating if she had built up to it rather than just have it come at the end of a relentless performance.

Dang, Janie Dee's line readings landed just perfectly every single time. I liked her Could I Leave You, which wasn't hysterical but walked the line between bitter and hurt. Why the hell the costume designer dressed her in grey (that bow!) and then in black, I guess we'll never know.

Josephine Barstow made me bawl. You could argue that this was perfect casting: an aging singer, be it Heidi or Dame Josephine, marshalling her dwindling resources to sing one last song, for herself and for her audience.

I have no basis for comparison for the Loveland sequence. But if its purpose is to have the characters comment on themselves using old-fashioned, grand, artificial theatrical devices, then the job was accomplished, even if it fell short on the "grand". The fact that the revolving stage was stopped for this sequence was arresting. For once, movement was frozen and that allowed us to focus on each character individually. (And I agree with r460 that having young Phyllis there was weird. Why do this only for Phyllis? Did the director think we wouldn't know who Lucy and Jessie are?) BTW, the fuck-is-this look on Janie Dee's face at the start of the sequence is priceless.

This was a cast of strong singing actors. Not a single one was a great singer (except maybe Quast, who really is legit) but they all knew how to use their voices to suit their songs. I'd rather have this than the current crop of overly technically refined, um, shall we call them acting singers?

But when the show had its first dress rehearsals in its Boston tryout, the mirrors caught so much light they were distracting and the wardrobe girls desperately cut up shower curtains and glued the plastic over all the mirrors.

Young Phyllis is there in Lucy and Jessie so that playgoers will realise that the song is about Phyllis's divided self -- and of course YP is half of that divide. Dominic Cooke talked about it in the Platform performance he did at the National a month or so ago. The assumption normally is that Lucy and Jessie are versions of Sally and Phyllis. Not so, says Cooke. So there we have it. Janie Dee gets better and better in the role and her dancing is pretty amazing. Blythe Danner and Jan Maxwell can look on in awe.

I didn't mind Imelda's "out of the gate" intensity in Follies, weirdly enough. For the first time, I actually think the Sally character made sense. Granted, I never got to see Dorothy Collins do it and I'm sure she was excellent, but I saw Donna McKechnie and Bernadette Peters live and I didn't care for them much.

I despised Imelda's same approach when she played Rose in Gypsy. It didn't work there. Her Rose was an angry, bitter, humorless monster from the beginning and was the same by the end. Had she built to her (admittedly) brilliant "Rose's Turn", she could have been damn near definitive. Her Sally was at least charmingly manic and like an overgrown little girl. She was clearly disturbed from the start, but not in an unsympathetic way.

I found a photo on Google of Who's That Woman in which they use hand mirrors, but R464 is correct; it wasn't the original production. Lord knows how I got it into my head. (And Lord knows how they got them out of their hands and offstage.)

Agreed with everyone above on Janie Dee's line readings, dancing and *hideous* costume. Every time she took a deep breath in Could I Leave You the bow would move. Lose the bow and dye the tunic a dark green. As Sally sings, "I should have worn green."

I think maybe the first few times I heard the score I thought Lucy/Jessie was about Phyllis and Sally, but I was a teenager and didn't know better.

Before we completely get away from Follies (not that we ever really do), has anyone seen the DVD of this production that's available on iOffer? Is it the same as the NT Live showing or someone's bootleg? Because I prefer the former. Also is it Region 1 (US, Canada) or Region 2 (Europe)?

What a weird definition of condescension just above. If you paid any attention to the production whatsoever, you'll note that to him (Dominic Cooke). the "ghosts" are actually shadow selves whom he sees as integral to the action, nowhere more clearly than in a song whose very title references one of those selves, so why not include YP? That's simply a director interpreting the work at hand, and few of them do it as well as Cooke does. His National Theatre MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM remains the best Wilson production I have ever seen (and I saw the Broadway original in 1984), with the exception of the original JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE.

Is there some reason they're making it so difficult to see "Follies" in the LA area? Why isn't it showing in either regular movie theaters or smaller legit theaters? In LA, the only two places to see it are UCLA and UC Irvine, both of which (1) are major schleps for me and (2) charge a lot for parking. I noticed that in other cities, it seemed to be a lot more accessible.

I think in that R&H guy's book it's claimed that Uptown Downtown was only replaced because Michael Bennett insisted. I can't remember why but it was painted as a payback/tit for tat request, not that he thought the song was shit. The dance music is similar to Lucy and Jessie. I was a bit disappointed in Bennett's choreography with Lucy/Jessie. There were no signature head pops. Surely that old lady could manage one strong head pop.

And what was up with Sondheim naming it The Story of Lucy and Jessie. Was he going through a Weill/Brecht phase? It's not 3Penny Opera, ya know.

My artsier friends scoff when I say this, but the only version of Threepenny that works for me is the Blitzstein. It's the only one that works as musical theatre for me. And yes, I know, that wasn't what Brecht was trying to do. I don't care.

The original L/J number also referenced those Kay Thompson MGM numbers in which she surrounded Judy or Dolores Gray or whoever with anonymous men in suits dancing around the leading lady. And it made the quick change into Live, Laugh, Love simple because the men didn't have to change costumes but were seen in a new light facing downstage.

The real shocker in those pre-Broadway Follies photos is seeing Alexis and Dorothy in those awful get-ups and wigs in their Loveland numbers before sanity prevailed.

Follies is 45 years old not 30.

So will people be discussing those two musicals 45 years from now?

They should replicate as well Aronson's and Klotz's magnificent production but there is no way any producer today could afford it despite people paying $100s for tickets.

I paid for a full price orchestra seat for a Wednesday mat $7.50. It soared to an obscene $15 for sat night. And that really was a crazy amount back then to see a Broadway show.

By the way years later Klotz said many fabrics she used for Follies were no longer even being made.

That's why I'm glad National Theatre films their shows and broadcasts them later. I wish more of Broadway would do that. And really, once a Broadway show closes, it's not like they're going to get additional income from it unless one of the touring productions comes to a city near you. And touring companies are rarely as good as Broadway.

I'm also a fan of Imelda as Sally, which surprised me. Her manic vibe really worked for the character and little nitpicks I used to have about the show suddenly disappeared with her in the role. It all made sense to me. I still can't stand her Rose, though. What the hell went wrong there? She got such wonderful reviews and everyone who saw it live said they saw a completely different show than what ended up on the recording.

Her manic vibe is what was wrong for the character. No one has surpassed Dorothy Collins in the role. Bringing her "cute" Hit Parade persona to the role, Collins, brilliantly costumed by Klotz (as much as Collins hated the dress, rosebuds and all) belied the madness at the heart of the role and didn't play the end in the beginning like others have done.

I think there's an uptick in Follies posts because the NT production is really everything we thought the show could be. There was always a shell of a stunner there, and we probably got engaged and overshared our views because we felt we were robbed once again of seeing something that could have been a masterpiece. The NT production is really spectacular. Seeing it is almost like finally sneezing after thinking a sneeze is coming on: immense relief and satisfaction. The book could STILL be better than it is, but it still gets the points across. We sometimes hold on to "follies" or, in this production "fo lies," that prevent us from moving on and recognizing the truth, and we all face an uncertain future while mourning our glorious past. This production hit me in the heart, whereas all previous productions aimed for the head.

I agree about the NT FOLLIES. It's easily the best production of that show that I've ever seen. Little flaws in the book and characters suddenly make sense and the whole thing played beautifully.

I keep hearing Imelda's GYPSY is coming this year, but why? Everyone saw the broadcast and I don't think anyone liked it very much. Plus, is she a big name in the states? It might sell for a month at the most. If they're going to revive GYPSY on Broadway, they probably need a name.

The NT production was ok but hardly the end-all and be-all. Loveland was on the cheap, which defeats the very MEANING of the piece, and the performances were hit or miss. Frankly, I thought the Paper Mill Production had better production values that captured the faded glamour of the piece.

What's the verdict on the actor who plays Sponge Bob. he looks adorable, and has a great body. Anyone had him? Has anyone seen the musical? I've never seen the tv show, so don't know much about the particulars of it, but the reviews intrigued me, mostly because I want to see the sets and props that they all mentioned. Even if the play sucks -- which it doesn't seem to -- we can marvel at the ingenuity of the stage craft. I might be in the minority, but I hated the story and music in Lion King, yet I was completely enthralled by the sets and lighting and costumes. I don't think anyone's expecting the book of a Sponge Bob musical to be earth shattering.
